  • India’s biggest film star Amitabh Bachchan is in London promoting his new film Shamitabh.
The giant of Indian pictures sat down with Luke Blackall to discuss aging, and to explain how his career has changed over time.
Bachchan originally rose to prominence in the 1970s and over the next four decades appeared in more than 180 films.
“I think most actors who go through this long period must indeed have to contend with the fact that they’re going to age, that they’re not going to have the same kind of popularity or attention from the audiences… and that somebody else who is younger or more popular will take their place or be ahead of them.”
Ever modest, the legendary actor humbly told Luke: “I’m fortunate that I still get some work and I’m fortunate that I’m happy to be doing the kind of roles that they give me.
“It’s also brought on a lot of variety in the kind of roles I get now. Earlier on it was just the leading man who came and wooed the leading lady and, you know, rode off into the sunset.
“But now I feel that I get different characters who look different, who behave differently, who get an opportunity to behave differently - as an actor that’s very challenging and good.”
Going on to discuss London, he explained the capital has “become like home.”
He said: “There’s a great feeling of comfort when you come here.”
Bachchan made his Hollywood debut in Baz Lurhman's adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novella "The Great Gatsby", playing the Jewish character, Meyer Wolfsheim. He spoke about this, and also explained why he hates the term "Bollywood."

3:18 i don't blame Amithah Bachchan for not liking the word bollywood, I don't even like the word bollywood, because there is no area in Mumbai or anywhere else in India called bollywood, unlike in LA where there is an area of Los Angeles called Hollywood

The reason why it was called Bollywood because Mumbai wasn’t Called Mumbai the original name for the city was Bombay and they got inspiration with the film industry Hollywood so that’s why.

He is too appreciative of Leonardo and the other actor, calling them popular in the universe, Amitabh forgets that he and his industry are bigger
