It's a mechanical complication in a certain watch that chimes down the time precisely using separate tones and combinations trough hammers striking gongs. Usually a low note for hours, a double high-low note for every quarter hour and a high note for every minute since the last quarter.

Another problem with minute repeaters is that they are almost ludicrously fragile.
If you are wearing one, you have to treat it as if you are carrying a robin's egg around in your hand all day. If you want to wash your hands, take it off in another room, lay it out on a silk handkerchief, (with an armed guard watching it), wash and carefully dry your hands, then come back for it and gently put it on again. Do not breathe too heavily on it or drop it even on carpet.

5074 with its cathedral gongs and the Ladies' 7000 sound the best imo. Apparently gold and a small case is a good recipe for an outstanding sound with regular gongs.

The 5123 goes for anywhere in the low $20,000.00 mark. It can be seen as low as 21K new, and as high as 26K. It is a very good looking Calatrava, and it wears smaller than the 5107, 5127, or the 5196 due to the smaller lugs. If you want to buy one, do so knowing that you made a wonderful choice!

my casio f91w is almost atomic acurate and display day and date besides the time... It needs a service every 7 years, just a change of the battery...

@A. B. off course not... but with regards to time keeping (the primary reason for a watch) yes.

Your best choice would be buying one of those Annual Luxury Watch Catalogues. In my 2013 edition the 5213 price in white gold is listed as 650,000 Swiss Franc which is about 540,000 Euros.

I was always under the impression that steel has the best resonance?

  • @oclvcarbon123
    @oclvcarbon123 11 років тому

Actually, rather than being nasty look into it a little more closely. The gold they use is 750 parts per thousand, which means that the other 250 is made up if some other metals which are less dense. The platinum they use is 950.

In love minute repeaters but I get the impression that you get ripped off. A pocket watch minute repeater can easy be 5% of the price of one of these watches shown. Can anyone provide me with any explanations for this?

Well, in today's world a pocket watch is really an affection, much akin to using a monocle instead of eyeglasses or contact lenses. It's an old-world design, not that it is bad or inferior, but the concept of using a pocket watch is odd; one has to wear a vest to easily handle it, although it can be carried in a spare pocket. Envision removing the watch to inspect the time, then replacing it. It takes extra time and really does not offer any advantage, save for using it as a small clock on the table in front of one. Much like the manual transmission in cars, the tide has turned and the public at large want convenience. When I had checked the Audemars Piguet Grande Complication the pocket version was only slightly less expensive than the wrist size. Now I believe that they only make it in the pocket style.

It's several times smaller so lower machine tolerances, more difficult to finish, etc for something that is ultra rare. It's exponentially harder to manufacture and keep the watch small.

LOL I bet Mr. Thierry Stern does not do that with the 5208p he was wearing in baselworld 2013. I agree one must be cautious with a piece that is not meant to get wet.

The people who did the audio for this unique video should, as Walter of Jeff Dunham fame says, 'Shut the hell up" when the minute repeater is gonging. It's annoying and distracting to hear the background noise when listening to the minute repeaters. This is a rare opportunity to hear a series of them.

I remember when I received my first calatrava for my 25th birthday, now I have a ref 5131 and 5146J in my collection. Just amazing watches, I would rather have a Patek rather than any watch. Work hard and you too can own these amazing timepieces, or do what I did...don't have a family and invest your money!

Girom Christian Calica Virgin? I assure you I am not a virgin, the only time I even mention the word is when I'm flying Upper Class on Virgin Atlantic. I definitely am not upset that I don't have a wife or kids, kids are ungrateful and I have never been in love with a woman to consider her wife material. The only thing I have to be careful about are gold diggers.

Girom Christian Calica The only "smart" thing I did was not getting married or caught up in a long term relationship. It just allowed me to work 12-14 hours a day, a few of my investments did well and I just got lucky.

Complete stupidity and boredom of filthy rich people. Whatever Patek you chose before this, you make a good choice. I can't in my wildest dream understand how someone can pay 300,000 to 750,000 USD for something ridicules as a "ping" sound from a watch. i am a Patek admirer, I truly love Patek watches and I have a 5711, a 5712 and a 52005G-001 Gondolo blue dial. These minute repeaters are not watches in my opinion, it's "mechanical art" and in a class for itself, a kind of a semi-watch as far as I'm concerned. I can't see any beauty in it compared to other Patek's, more than it's a piece of mechanical art which is extremely difficult and time consuming to manufacture. I admire the disciplin and knowledge in this art, but as a watch for that price it's only ridicules to me and doesn't impress me at all.
But as my grandfather always said... think if we like the same things, what a boring world we would live in then.
