    I have no idea where all you people have come from! But I made this vid a little bit ago and I've learned a lot since:
    You can run 1TB in a 5.5th gen, the limiting factor is HOW MANY songs you have, not how much space you use. So if you have a library full of big meaty FLACs then you can totally use 1TB. Providing it stays under 30,000 songs on a 5.5 gen and 50,000 on a 7th gen. The iPod was running out of RAM, it can't count high enough for the big library. It's why individual albums played fine but asking it to shuffle 40K songs was too much. But thankfully Shrek played fine.
    I've also run this iPod with a safe 30,000 tracks and filled the rest as a hard dive full of random anythings. Literally like 500GB of junk and everything worked fine as a portable hard drive. Super neato. But it's still not the most reliable form of storing data... it's a 2007 iPod.
    If you are keen on owning a 1TB iPod but don't feel like doing it yourself a fellow moderator in the iPod Discord has a balling ebay store selling prebuilts and just about every individual component imaginable for iPods: www.ebay.com/str/imapc941

    • @DankPods
      @DankPods  5 років тому +909

      Thats pretty much it. If you have huge FLAC files then 1TB is useful as even around 25k tracks will use a lot of storage.

    • @shantanuchakrawarty6217
      @shantanuchakrawarty6217 5 років тому +381

      It's all because of poor coding, and because of the fact, they were not made to handle this much storage.
      If Apple wanted it had programmed the shuffle feature in a way that it factors the songs in segments and then out of that sector it can choose a random number according to that choose the segment and do this at most 5 times...
      In this way it isn't going to take that RAM, the process will be a hell lot faster and the user can use the shuffle feature as usual

      UA-cam music app does that when I try to shuffle songs in offline mode if I’m on a bad Wi-fi network, like in an elevator. That’s just an app glitch on my modern iPhone, then afterwards when I give up and don’t shuffle it tries to catch up with the failed requests and starts playing random songs for no reason.

      Not really that difficult, plenty of space in there. Just gut a minijack bluetooth receiver, hook it up to the battery and hardwire it to the minijack port pads.
      The potential challenge(s) is/are range (if that back cover is metal), and arranging an on/off toggle so it doesn't drain the battery when not in use - accessible from the outside. Its doable, but a bit tricky to do well. It doesn't draw a lot of power though - those cheap BT4.0 round receivers you get from Mao's Candy Mountain for $2-3, has a board the length of about two microSDs and about 2/3rds the width of one - 3 ish mm tall. And a 60mA litium cell, which can run my old thirsty Bose QCs for a good 3-4 hours at fairly high volume. That's with continous audio output. Idle it'll draw far less. Depending on your usecase, that might be acceptable to leave on permanently. There's possibly some 3.7V+ lines you could hook into that aren't live when the iPod is sleeping, but where they are, and whether they csn tolerate such a parasitic load, I don't know.

    • @jankow9687
      @jankow9687 5 років тому +1

      Why not using BT LE? With that you could let it on for days...

    • @pr0xZen
      @pr0xZen 5 років тому +2

      @@jankow9687 Well to be on the fair, with BT4.0 I think LE support is optional. 4.1, included by default. However, very few BT _audio_ transmitters and receivers support it, at least the cheaper kind - because the principle is super low bitrate and only intermittent, periodical transmits. Like for example health and sports trackers. Pretty much the exact opposite of what (decent quality) audio transmission requires. Meaning the addition of LE is kinda wasted/pointless for that kind of device.
      A 4.0 transmitter / receiver isn't gonna be a huge draw when idle. But it _will be_ there. And, some times bt devices bug out in terms of pairing. Which is another good reason why you'd want at least that power toggle accessible from the outside. Once you have that, powering it on/off is a nice addition if you're not using it for a while.

    • @zeroa69
      @zeroa69 5 років тому

      that pretty much defies the entire purpose of using an ipod classic in the first place... the main selling point being the dac n battery life. other then zune ipods had the best price to performance hardware during the ipod run. to this day outside of the lgv series phones nothing in the mobile market has a dac that comes close to the ones used in the 5th/7th gen ipod classic that doesnt cost several hundred dollars

    Thanks For Making This Video. I always wanted to replace my hard drive in my 160 GB Apple iPod with a solid state hard drive or ssd card reader. Now I Know how because of your video. You rock! I Love the iPod's with the click wheel. It is, to me, the greatest Music Player in the world. So sad that the Apple Company stopped making them. I have two of them and I would not be without either of them.
