Yo you uploaded this so long ago and you still reply to help people is insane great job dude
Hahah thanks I appreciate it! It was my very first video here on UA-cam! It's fun looking back and seeing how the channel started out.
Well this was done 5 years ago, just watched now, very entertaining, guys good, young and full of energy, very nice job,I just picked up a 1999 Corolla $400. Bought a $40 off the shelf power steering pump with pulley, and swapped out and I thought that was alot of work lol, cold outside too,all from watching these kinds of videos , keep up the good work.
Haha, thank you so much! This was my 1st UA-cam video, it's been really fun evolving the channel over the years, thank you for watching!
Good informative video. and yea that 'music' really makes it easier for me to pay close attention to the really Important stuff, couldn't get by without it.
Honestly, one of the best replacement guide videos I've seen for this year Corolla. I know this is a 7 year old video and you may even make better ones now, but everything was clear and concise enough.
I have to replace my rack, second time since I've owned this car in 2010. It made it to at least 2019 without the rack leaking (oem). Replaced it with a reman, now I have to replace it again this year (although 5 to 6 years seems average for replaced units). Decided to just buy completely new, no reman, maybe it'll last until the car finally falls apart lol
I'm not interested in doing this myself, but at least I can help my mechanic as we're doing it without a lift too.
Wow thank you so much. This was literally my very first youtube video. I started it out of curiosity and it kinda just snowballed from there!
Just from my experience rack and pinion comes out from drivers side ,however you need to drop subframe ,remove rear motor mount and mount holder too. You have to twist rack and pinion upside down to fit through access hole and way to do it bring rack pinion head where motor mount was and rotate it 180 deg so is upside down then pull it back and fit it thru acces hole ,head first then the body, hope it helps.
Thanks you! It was a big job but with your help I was able to replaced the rack and opinion on my 97 Corolla. I was able just to loosen (but not removed) the front crossmember suspension in place by a floor jack and then remove the three rear transaxle mounting bolts to get to the last bolt holding the rack and opinion in place. I also needed to remove the rear transaxle through bolt for clearance to remove that last rack and opinion bolt. Unfortunately, I snapped a bolt when torquing one of the bolt that was not clearly specified in my manual. Thank God it was not a critical bolt for the front crossmember suspension. It was for the front stabilizer bar that was not equipped in my car. I would not attempt this repair again. It was painful not having a lift. BTW, that front number 8 metric stabilizer bolt should be torque to about 108 ft-lbs. Toughest part of the job was removing the power steering hoses and the last rack and opinion bolt blocked by the rear transaxle through bolt. It took me about 3 days to get the job done and a professional wheel alignment. I am a novice.
Nice work , thanks alot
I have Corolla 2003 & Lexus ls400
Believe me this work in the Corolla is much much much harder than the Lexus .
It's so close to the 87 that the only differences are the heat shields don't exist and there's just a single center engine cradle, so thank you for fixing it bongbong!
Awesome. I have the same problem. I have two 96 Toyota Corollas. I have zero mechanic experience. For the most I'm rebuilding my cars. One of the corollas has same engine and transmission. It's over 250,000 miles. Replacing all parts. Car is awesome! I'm looking to make it to 300,000+ miles. Thanks for the video.
They are awesome cars! I appreciate you watching, thank you!!
This was so entertaining and I know nothing about cars, great music, great editing, all over awesome =) (funny too!)
Really great video especially for your first one.
Thank you!
Thanks for your sharing knowledge 👍
i did a rack in a 1986 nissan sentra hatchback in my driveway. what a MFer. that job was one of the hardest i ever done.
I've done a lot of car projects and jobs and I think replacing a rack is probably the most annoying.
Hey can you guys do more videos on this car? I just was given one and love watching fix it videos, driving videos, detailing, etc. Great video!
Hello and thank you!! Sorry to anyone who's been waiting for new videos.. in the past 6 months things have been busy AND I've been moving into a new garage. I've got some pretty interesting videos in the pipeline so stay tuned! Thanks for watching!
I'm about to take this on for a 98 corolla. Save a bunch of money! Thank you.
Welcome! Take it slow and it'll be a fun project! Feel free to shoot me any questions if you run into any snags.
How'd it go? I'm gearing up to do this myself really soon here ..
Thanks for the 'engine prop by oil pan' suggestion.
Welcome!
That positive battery terminal looks great too.
Thanks for this video bro. it's very helpful. Your friend from the Phil.
Salamat po! Where in the Philippines are you?
Great job 👍
Thank you!
Very helpful video, thanks man!I've gotta say though, you managed frickin well, considering you were working without a Pit in your Shop Floor, and also the fact that you appear to have had no second set of hands helping you.Yeah, removing the faulty/suspect parts is a difficult enough procedure, but re-assembly,now that's one whole different can o" beans! ;).
Great work, buddy, and it's very much appreciated,.Still, I aint lookin" forward to this very same job.!
Thanks man I appreciate it! This was my first UA-cam video and I've learned a lot/gotten a lot of feedback since then. I think I could have gone into more detail and done things much differently.. so if you run into any hangups or have any questions feel free to ask!
If you need details to remove subframe on corolla, just search in youtube how to replace rear mount in corolla 98,you will see details.I did this job myself and is 6 bolts on left and 6 bolts on right of the frame ,they are not the same size so watch where you removing it from.
Thanks brother
Very good content
Thank you, this was my very first video on UA-cam! Much has improved since this one! Thanks for watching!!
this video helped me fix my marriage too. thank you
#bongbongloveslove
You need to count the turns of the ball joint as you remove it from the steering rack end, also measure the number of turns for the lock nut and write them down.
Great tip, unfortunately the aftermarket rebuilder used slightly different length shafts so I was unable to use that method. Otherwise that is the tried and true! Also another reason why I usually prefer OEM parts. Thanks for watching!!
After finishing this job i realized that the best way to remove the rack and pinion in or out of the car is to remove rear motor mount and mount holder too and just use that space there instead of access hole just make sure put your jack with piece of wood under transmission and raise it. Also before you install you new rack and pinion in place try your hose fittings because i had that problem with my first part and had to return and reorder from different vendor.
Hard job
Good video. I'm going to use this to (hopefully) replace my rack and pinion today. If I could offer one piece of advice, list all of the tools and sizes you will be using at the beginning on the video! Nothing worse than getting halfway through and realizing you don't have a certain size!
Thanks Nick! Great feedback.. I'll try to keep that in mind with future how to videos. Sadly I'm usually winging it as I go so I don't even know :-p Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!!
Fix it Bongbong you might want to consider putting it in the descriptions. Then you can link to everything needed with Amazon affiliate links 😎. I'll let you know how it goes!
@@FixitBongbong Finally finished this. Your instructions were terrible lol, but I still owe you a few beers! Like others have said, you skipped over the hardest parts and in some places skipped things entirely! That said, this is the only video on here about this for the Corolla, so it did get me on the right track as far as the basic steps and especially the subframe. Also, I didn't end up having to completely remove the subframe, I just let it hang down. Like you said, probably not the best practice haha
Sheesh.. by the sound of it sounds like I might owe you a few beers! But nice work man. This was my very first video and I've learned a lot since then. But you're right.. I might post a follow up or add additional instructions in the description haven't decided yet. Thanks for the feedback, glad to hear you got the job done!
I charge $600.00 US to replace them. Plus parts. As you have to drop the sub frame. Just to remove 1 damn bolt!
How to drop the subframe?
Kyle Visitacion how do you drop the subframe?
Hey!
So I have a 99 corolla I got super cheap a while ago and the power steering crapped out pretty fast. The leak is very severe and I was told I need to replace the rack and pinion as well as the lines.
I am curious if you know of any way to replace it without removing the subframe?
or how to remove it just partially if that is possible?
Thank you for the good video.
How long did it take, from the beginning to the end?
Honestly since I filmed it it took me a whole weekend. I would imagine this job to take 6-12 hours going nice and slow.
I just bought a 1995 Geo Prizm Aka 95 toyota corolla, I'm hoping the steering systems are almost identical. This video should help with the replacement!
Should be pretty similar! Thanks for watching.. congrats on the car!!!
Oh,one more thing, music mix was good
I got everything off. Rack is flopping around. Seems to be stuck on the steering shaft. I removed one bolt on the column. Is there another bolt?
Good video. I've got a Geo Prizm that I need to do this on, which is basically the same operation. So, the motor didn't shift at all with that motor mount removed? Also, how hard was it to get the steering knuckle on? Thanks.
Thanks! Nope, the engine won't shift because you still have the upper mount and the trans mount holding it's position. Steering knuckle was pretty easy.. keep the wheel locked so it doesn't re-index on you.
Great video. My 1998 corolla with 250K miles just stared leaking steering fluid, I'm crossing my fingers is just a hose issue cause replacing the rack and pinion might worth more than the car itself and not planning on doing it myself. Man these corollas are build to last for ever, is the most realiable car I ever had. Had a few GM's, buicks and ford but those are not reliable et all. I'm only buying toyota from now on.
Thank you for watching! Fingers cross for you! They're great cars.. I regret selling mine.
Great vid...!! Quick question, did u need to support the engine with the floor Jack or would the engine and transmission mount support the motor n tranny??
Thank you! Yes, I supported the engine with a floor jack. You can also use an engine support brace tool like here: ua-cam.com/video/iyn23_4Wkj4/v-deo.html
Great video!
How long did it take you to remove and replace? I have secondary transportation, but just curious.
I have torn boots, so I'll probably try replacing those first and see if that fixes the leak. Also replacing the timing chain tensioner O-ring. I've got fluid leaking underneath the rear right side of my engine. Figure it's best to start with the cheaper repairs and see if it fixes.
Shahid Sulahria looks like a couple days
Thanks! Took a weekend.. would have been much quicker if I wasn't trying to figure out how to film! Unfortunately boots aren't fluid seals and only serve the purpose to prevent dirt from wearing the pressure seals in the rack. Sound like you're gonna be doing this repair soon. As for the right side of your motor.. have you checked your power steering pump and valve cover gasket?
I replaced my valve cover gasket about two years ago. And my power steering pump doesn't 'seem to be leaking'. But it is covered in grease and sludge.
Although I have a strange buzzing/rattling sound that only occurs in gear and when accelerating from a stop. Which has gradually gotten louder over the past 4 or 5 years. But goes away when it's warmed up.
I'll be checking my belt drive by removing my serpentine belt and checking if the buzzing goes away. If not, I'll flush my power steering and put in ATF like the manual says, and not synthetic power steering fluid. My last ditch effort is to check the motor/transmission mounts, which as far as I know, have never been changed. I'm at 183k miles now.
I probably won't change out my drive axle until I get a better car jack. Using a cheapo 'Blackjack' that my wife bought a few years ago. Height is extremely limiting my range of movement, lol.
Clean the filter screen on the outlet of the pump reservoir. That will limit fluid from getting to the rack.
You need to get yourself some pneumatic tools and flare nut wrenches!
I enjoyed the humor of your video!
This is not a repair a novice should take on and not an enjoyable repair for the professional.
...oh buddy better believe I've learned quite a bit from the time I did this job. Thanks for watching and yes you're right.
Nice video tha
Thank you for watching!!
I'm having trouble removing the crossmember..I got all the bolts I see off but it's still on there pretty good..
Perhaps it's getting hung up on the lower engine mount?
I would like to see more on the subframe removal. That was to fast and not detail enough. The subframe removal is the hardest part of the damn job.
You did not show what you did to remove the old rack from the frame.
Thanks for the video, very helpful, I got told today I need a brand new rack pinion after an inspection was done, so my question to you is what should I do, replace the part and fix it myself for cheaper or just buy a new car? The price from a auto shop I was told was 1100 dollars. Thanks.
That's a tough call.. If the rest of the car is in good shape I'd say $1100 is cheaper than a new car and so is doing the job yourself. The whole reason the previous owner sold me this car was cause he was in your shoes and didn't see the value in the repair. Good luck!
@@FixitBongbong thank you for the advice.
@@captainfordo778 Anytime, thank you for watching! Please subscribe!
Buy the part and fox with UA-cam or your local shop
You desperately need a nice long breaker bar! You're in danger of busting your foot & ratchet with that pipe. Also, I wonder if measuring distance between the two tie rod ends (before taking them off the old steering rack) would work, then get the exact same distance when they're installed on the new one... Pretty good vid
Thanks for the tips! Since this vid I've moved onto proper breaker bars and impact tools!
I have a 2003 vvti 1600, can I easily adjust rack from underneath, please?
I want to replace the power steering reservoir on my 99 Toyota Corolla. The previous owner used Pyroil power steering fluid and left a full quart in the trunk . Is this power steering fluid okay to use on a 99 Toyota Corolla ? Never heard of this brand before. Thanks 👍
I believe the Corolla requires ATF for the power steering hydraulic system. Not sure the specifics on the brand of what you have, but I'd check to see if it's ATF.
Hey pretty noob question but was wondering why do you need to get an alignment. You mentioned this in your video. I have a 1999 Toyota Corolla and I was I formed by mechanic I would need to replace the rack and pinion and get an “alignment” didn’t understand why he said that. Did your car need an alignment prior to replacing the rack and pinion ?
Hey there! You need to get an alignment anytime you disturb the suspension or steering geometry in a vehicle. In this project's case the lower strut mounts were disconnected as well as the tie rods being removed from the rack to be swapped onto the new part.
You speed up the part where your removing it so I'm wondering when you removed it did you go under the hole the tie rod goes through normally or did you go through the hole cause going through the hole seems entirely impossible considering it's size
Hey there, great question.. I actually had to rewatch the video as a reminder since I did this job 4 years ago! So at 14:13 I poorly explained it but to answer your question it went through the driver's side tie rod passes through. In order to get the rack to pass you have to push the arm all the way driver's side to allow you to tilt the rack upwards to clear/shimmy the steering pinion through the hole and then it should pass right through. I hope this helps!!
@@FixitBongbong oh man i ended having a mechanic friend coming over but another option is to remove the lower engine mount bracket too and then go diagnol and under the hole but man are you fast at responding thank you for your video man
@@austinwilliams3992 I try my best to get back to everyone! I saw your question and assumed you were at that part and I didn't want you stranded. It's a hell of a job. I hope it all worked out and I really appreciate you checking out my video. Full disclosure this was my very first UA-cam video and it was very cringe worthy for me to re-watch it! But all in all I hope it was helpful and I promise I've gotten better at making videos! Cheers buddy!
@@FixitBongbong I've been using it as reference for putting stuff back together so it's still helping
Hello. Quick question. I have a little wheel play 3-9 which moves my steering wheel slightly. The axle rotated like it’s really bent or something but I am not sure what it is. Is it the axle or the power steering bushings? Or what? Shakes at high speeds and shakes badly while braking at high speeds
I'd start with your tie rod ends and lower ball joints.
Fix it Bongbong good! I actually just noticed that my axle is in a diagonal angle. Ball joint it’s fine no play or sounds. But I think it’s the wrong side or wrong part. It’s making the strut point backwards thus causing the axle to be in a diagonal angle. Jeeez! Thank you for the quick reply! I will start by replacing that. Or may be the ball joint is busted and came out of place. Regardless. I will start with that! Thank you! Liked and subscribed! I got my corolla for 650$ beat up so I have done all kind of stuff for less than 200$. I am keeping my budget low but good quality parts
I'm currently attempting this on my Corolla but I'm stuck. I can't wriggle the rack out of the engine bay. No matter how hard I try I can't get it through that small hole in the wheel well area. I wish you has shown that part in the video. I will more than likely have to reinstall the old rack as I do not have other transportation.
The rack definitely fits through the driver's side hole. Watch the video starting from 14:14 and try again. Which part is getting hung up?
Oh man I wasn't expecting a reply! I missed the part when you said "push rack and pinion arms all the way toward drivers side". I'll go have a wack at it now.Thanks!@@FixitBongbong
Hey brother i have electric steering im my corolla and steering locks up once in a while while driving. Do you what would be the cause or solution as i have shown my mechanics but they cant find the problem tell it gets stuck infront of them. Thanks
Hey so sorry for the delayed response here.. Unfortunately it could be a number of variables ranging from electrical to mechanical. A proper diagnosis would have to be done when the condition can be re-created.
hello, my autie’s corolla 1999 (?) model is not working if we dont charge its battery. and i think some of the wirings or the starter has a problem and i dont know how to fix it bcoz she already gave it to us. can you help me with its machine? thanks a lot
Hey there! Trying to understand, are you saying that the battery drains itself or the car wont start without a fresh charge each time?
Great video! The host isn't too bad to look at either 😉
Thank you, if you subscribe you'll know when there are new videos to watch more Bongbong.
He isnt bad to look at at all 😉
What about bleeding the line and to getting the air out of the line. I notice you did not mention this. I took my 2001 Toyota Corolla Le to the shop, they not bleed the line this destroyed the new power steering pump. The repair shop for the most part was truthful and replaced the pump again before leave their shop. PS: the old fluid was in the lines for 20 years.
Great point! Turning the tires back and forth will eventually work the air out of the lines.
HOW DID YOU GET THE RACK OUT? mine won't fit through the frame hole because the little shaft is in the way
It's been a few years, but I believe I had to tilt the rack 90 degrees up to clear the steering stub shaft through the frame hole. Apologies I wasn't very clear in my video.
I have a question if the power steering makes a winding noise and it leaks should you see the fluid on the ground
Whining noise typically means fluid is low, if you have a slow leak you might not see any big puddles on the ground, but I would imagine your subframe to be pretty nasty.
@@FixitBongbong thank you so much for reply keep doing a great job and have a blessed day !
What is the size of the Tierod tightner ?. Was removing subframe easy ?.
Tie-rod tightener? The Jam nut? Difficulty is subjective.. I'd call it a large and involved job and as long as you pace yourself not hard or difficult. I personally wouldn't call it easy either.
@@FixitBongbong The Jam nut.
So any idea why the steering get super stiff when I drive through puddles of water? Something electrical I assume?
Could be belt slip on the power steering pump.
Do you need to drop rackandpion to change the steering yoke?
Great question.. I'm not certain since I haven't ever serviced this rack or any for that matter.. but given the space constraints I would imagine it would help to remove the steering rack to perform any service outside of the rods.
Is it any easier to remove a rack and pinion from the junkyard? 97 corolla
Than buying a new or reman unit? I'd say going to the junkyard for one would be more difficult and honestly a gamble.. I'd hate to do the job again in short time should the used rack go.
I see u have nice place to do ur work and all those large toolbox around..but then later realise u didnt hv an airgun or even a long socket handles to loosen a tough nut.. after rewatching, I noticed u didnt even have vice grip? Wow... is that really ur place? Just curious bro..
Very observant! This video was filmed about a year ago in a friend's garage. I also do not use any air tools.. I use an electric impact or breaker bars.
Yup I noticed to , nice tool chest , clean garage , oh nice video to, I was wondering about the sub frame. Gonna be changing my rack in a geo soon , so good to know some of this ,
might want to title this removal of rack and pinion (power steering fix)
That’s a lot of work. I like to work on Toyota’s haha but for that work, I sell the damn car for 500$ haha
Yeah after this job I totally understood why the owner sold it. Still one of my favorite cars.. sad I sold her.
Is this process similar for the 9th Gen Corolla? 2003-2008.
I'm not certain, but I'd image there would be some significant differences as the 9th gen corollas were quite the redesign. Same concept I'd imagine.. you'd most likely have to drop the subframe.
@@FixitBongbong For anybody with a 9th Gen Corolla: I had a leak at the top of the rack, it's possible to change the upper seal without removing the subframe or the power steering assembly.
Can I use just 2 jack stands or should I use 4
I'd recommend 4 just to get the car up as high as possible.
He doesn't show a shot on how to remove the sub frame. Dis.
How did you get from clear bright lighted garage to a dark garage so quickly?
Well most likely a mixture of not knowing how to use a camera, different shoot days, and auto mode doing all sorts of crazy things.. but mostly me not knowing how to camera.
✌️🫶✊
its necessary to remove the subframe you just did a lot for nothing you can leave the sub attached and still remove the steering rack

your video does not make sense to me. if you remove the rack and pinion from the driver side wheel, why the hell did you remove the subframe and engine mount, i think you did some unnecessary work basically you just made the job harder then it should be
Great point! It's been a few years since I did this job and this was my first UA-cam video so in full transparency I wish I was more detailed and concise. Anyway if memory serves.. one must remove the subframe to gain access to the brackets that are securing the rack to the firewall. Trust me, I definitely don't like doing unnecessary work! Appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!
Killed it in Spanish lol
Why even make a video if you going to skip the meat and potatoes about how to ACTUALLY remove it
Cut the annoying music
I've finally subscribed to a stock music service so hopefully future videos will be less annoying. LOL
