    I swear that sounded just like a Jet Engine spooling up, that alone is awesome
    Top marks for the destruction sparks and fire

    • @SeanBZA
      @SeanBZA 8 років тому +17

      Has sparks just like the starter as well, just does not get past the first stage though before spooling down.
      Now, if Photon was given a jet turbine and "upgraded" the control box to enable stupid speed I would love to see that. I am far enough away the debris would not harm me, even if some does go into orbit. Would not do that in the living room though, unless he wants an entire house remodel in an instant.

    • @bucklebill2
      @bucklebill2 8 років тому +21

      But will the jet engine destroy itself before the house takes off? XD

    • @JesusisJesus
      @JesusisJesus 7 років тому +6

      SeanBZA - There is a theoretical speed limit of turbine blades due to the centripetal forces and speed of the blade tips creating sonic booms as they pass the speed of sound, the problem becomes one of metallurgy. Currently, turbine blades are grown as a single crystal of the metal they are made of, it is done in very strictly controlled conditions and takes an awful long time to grow a single turbine blade into a single crystal. I believe it's about a month or so.
      If they were made in the conventional manner, there would be many many crystals of the metal and when anything metallic breaks, it is because it separates the bonds between the crystal structure of the object, so that is why turbine blades are "grown" as a single crystal, so that there is nowhere for the turbine blade to crack.
      Also, jet engines actually run at much slower RPM speeds these days because they are bypass turbo-fan type engines, which is essentially a jet engine using the front turbine blades to push air around the outside of the turbine, rather than through it, meaning they can run at 1/10th of the speed, use MUCH less fuel, much less wear and tear, and provide more power than a jet engine that creates thrust from the air and fuel being burned and thrust out the back of the turbine.
      Short answer: It can't be done, the blades would detatch well before any exciting speed was attained, even IF you could jam enough air and fuel into the thing..........

      that's how many large motors sound. actually the same physics is at work in the motor that is at work in turbofans and jet engines: noise created from air moving through enclosed spaces. Same kind of thing that gets those old fashioned mechanical sirens to work.

    • @quantumdude836

      I think it's because there's no mechanical load attached to the motor, so it spins faster than normal

    • @AH-zw9zx
      @AH-zw9zx 5 років тому +29

      The air intake was covered by the floor because the motor was sitting upright.
      The power required to drive a centrifugal fan is proportional to the air flowing through it, therefore it was running unloaded.
      That type of brushed motor will overspeed without a load attached, causing excessive arcing on the commutator.

    Excellent execution. That vacuum released the smoke very quickly.
    Those roller bearing still do a great job at those speeds.

    • @putteification
      @putteification 8 років тому +4

      The armatures are surprisingly close to arcing at 240 V. Second motor started at 260!

    • @Electroblud
      @Electroblud 8 років тому +7

      That's not how it works. The arcing is caused by the high speed of rotation (the "naked" motor was run without any load after all). This breaks the current through the windings very abruptly, causing a voltage spike because of the self-induction (probably a few thousand Volts). That's what causes the arcing.

    • @ChumpusRex
      @ChumpusRex 8 років тому +10

      The 2nd motor was unloaded, so would have been overspeeding massively. These motors are designed to run with the load of the impeller.

    • @OfficeMackerel
      @OfficeMackerel 8 років тому +1

      +ChumpusRex actually the second motor looks like one from a Dyson upright, the spindle actually is the driveshaft of the brush bar pulley, while the impeller actually forms part of the motor itself. So you're not entirely wrong.

      irrelevant but a few years ago he microwaved a computers motherboard while it was on, its still in his early vids on his channel somewhere..
      a computer overloaded would be interesting to see on the dc side after the power supply as the power supply would just blow its fuse or die before anything happened to the motherboard ect id imagine however straight to motherboard dc overvoltage something would definitely pop how much it would take would be interesting to see :P

    *Peak* popping current is 21 Amps at 380Volts (thus a popping power of *8.754 W*

    Vacuum cleaner motor without load (with thermal overload, twice):

    *Peak* popping current is 12 Amps at 345Volts (thus a popping power of *3.717 W*

    Vacuum cleaner motor without load (without thermal overload):
    Nought to pop in *34 seconds*
