Thank you for watching and commenting! It is a neat attachment, but I struggled to find any documentation for it. I have since built a table for it so that I can use it as an edge belt sander.

Pretty sweet. I did not know it was an option for the ras. Great rebuild of an old tool. Keep up the fun projects.

Thank you! I have had the thing on a shelf for years and have been wanting to play around with it, when I saw a really cheap RAS for sale down the street I knew I had to give it a shot.

Cool video. I wouldn't put my hand in there. I've never seen one of these before. Thanks very interesting.

Thank you! It is a little weird the first few times you use it, but you actually get a good amount of control.

Never seen one. That's cool but no one would make anything like that now. And it seeems to be kind of a Shop Smith thing making one tool do alternate jobs. RAS's take up too much room or I'd persue this. Great video and good luck with it.

Thank you for watching and commenting! I completely agree, it is not an intuitive design at all, but I already had the sanding attachment sitting around figured it was worth setting up.

I'm sorry but a sanding station you need to put your hand inside of seems honestly a horrible design. If the whole assembly was allowed to rotate up into a vertical orientation by rotating the spindle on the motor would make much more sense to me. Personally taking a look at what this tool is designed to do I would rather have 2 ShopSmith stations one of which being a mk7 with an additional ShopSmith PTO base for specialty configurations like this one. I say 3 total tools so you can move from one job to another quickly & you only need to set up the 2 stations for what you have planed for the day without jumping back & forth. That has always been my issue with ShopSmiths is the reconfiguration & tuning time.

Thank you for watching and commenting! You absolutely can re-orient the motor to adjust the positioning of the belt sander. I currently have it mounted on its side so that it is functioning more as an edge sander. The only caveat is that you need to fabricate some kind of platen to support the sanding belt. I posted the edge sander table/platen I through together as a community post.
I have a shopsmith and agree that the thing that deters me from using it most is the set up/reconfiguration time.

Though smaller, it is essentially a stroke sander. All or most stroke sanders work the same way. Yes there is a certain amount of danger. AS there is with any power tool. In this instance the sanding belt and the drive belt are well guarded. Much more then most stroke sander designs.
