I have a 2024 Mazda cx 90 with the base 280hp engine and got the steering recall and the vcm (vehicle control module) recalls done. It is exactly as you describe the cx70. Transmission is 99% better, just the occasional bump but really good now. Steering with the new worm gear is much better. I would still prefer a faster steering ratio but just my personal preference. Power comes on much better from the throttle. Just like you said if you do not need the absolute maximum, best-in-class interior space (which most people don't) this is by far the best looking, driving vehicle in the class with great real world fuel economy! Love it especially now that Mazda fixed the major issues very quickly. You do have to except some issues from a first year model with a brand new engine, brand new transmission and brand new platform. Electronics could use some updating but as you said you can turn a lot of that stuff off. I always do with all of my cars anyway. Thanks for a great, honest review!
Thanks for sharing your ownership experience, and I appreciate the info about the recall! I heard 2025 CX-90s were getting the updates but I didn't realize the 2024s were too, that's great news!
My wife bought a CX-5 in 2023, wish this CX-70 was available then. The CX-5 is good but it would be nice to have more room and we weren't interested in 3 rows
Absolutely love Mazda these days. I think this upper class esq fit and finish along with hands on engine choices even down to the Mazda 3 is awesome. I wish Mazda wasn’t so secretive on what’s coming next!
For most people this is a great vehicle with all the luxury features and really nice looks. Most people won’t notice the small gripes that are present.
thank you for the review - I still keep looking things up regarding this even though I have one :P so I bought one of these on Labor Day and absolutely love it - quick feedback re some of the knocks: 1 - yes, agreed, turn many of the sound notifications off 2 - re: time to take a break - I found that cleaning the driver monitoring camera with a alcohol wipe and shammy got rid of this. Now, I do not know if it will come back, but since it went away I suspect it can make an error if your picture is not 'clean/crisp' to it 3 - my xp with the rough transmission was directly related to i-stop - I disabled it and haven't looked back (for now by continually doing it manually - which honestly, it pisses me off that I can't just turn it off in the settings...can we get a software update Mazda? I paid 60k+ for this vehicle and you're FORCING a feature on me - for the love of god I shouldn't have to buy an aftermarket part that hacks your software essentially, to achieve this permanently!) also tyvm for the review of the 87 octane - I expect I may stick with 93 for my normal driving since I only drive it 3-4 x week for around 125 miles (including grocery trips and stuff) - but VERY good to know for longer trips additional note and prob my main gripe - is that the driver camera is VERY inconsistent about recognizing me or my phone when getting into the vehicle - I find VERY often that it will default to guest driver and I have to go in and manually set the driver to be myself in order to get the vehicle to adjust the seat and steering wheel for me...
Matt, Thanks for the in depth review on these, I do not like SUV's but, I have always said Mazda makes great vehicles, and have they have the best looking SUV's. Mazda does their homework and makes great products, sad they never got the credit like Toyota does. I really want to see a new Mazda 6 all wheel drive sedan using this platform. I think it would be 5 out of 5 stars, and I will be buying.
These are really nice vehicles. Earlier this year I test drove one of these, a GV70, the X5, GLC, and Q5. I ended up with the Genesis but the Mazda was easily my second choice. The smoother motor along with handsome styling inside and out made it standout. Plus the price was great as well, especially compared to the Germans. It’s a great car and Mazda has a hit in their lineup.
@@t.k.morris My GV70 was more. I chose the Genesis because the styling inside and out is very unique. It punches WAY above its weight in terms on quality and materials on the inside. It feels like a car that should cost tens of thousands of dollars more. It also had the best warranty if I remember right. Most importantly, it felt the most special of all the cars. The Mazda was really nice but wasn’t AS nice as the Genesis in my opinion. The Germans were okay but they were overpriced for what you get when I was looking at value propositions. The BMW was the nicest German but overpriced and lacked features of the Mazda and Genesis while costing more. The Mercedes felt the cheapest on the inside and I didn’t care for how it looked. The Audi drove and rode nice but it was bland on the inside; zero character.
I hope they bring the CX-60 ( or equivalent re-badged vehicle to the states ). It would be a more luxury oriented competitor to the middle performance compact luxury SUV's ( X3 M40 ; SQ5 ; GV70 3.5T ) for $15k less. The CX-70 is a great vehicle for the class, but with that 122" wheelbase, it feels a bit large around parking lots and garages. Would be nice to have their new longitudinal architecture in the compact category.
@MattMaranMotoring fair point, I've heard some reviewers say something along the lines of: were limited to 50 miles Or something similar, its a breath of fresh air to see a longer term review
I had an early cx90 as a rental, had some miles on it and reaked of weed. I doubt it had the recent tsb reflashes and the thing was great. I was legitimately upset to get back into my highlander, it's better in every single way
My 2019 3 puts a ping saying 'Time to take a break' after two uninterrupted hours of driving. Not sure what would have triggered it so soon after a stop, unless it was so brief that the timer didn't reset.
I have a cx70 turbo s and I went from Pittsburgh to myrtle beach last week I averaged 27.5 mpg the trip was went through w Virginia and Virginia mountains and some red lights plus hurricane debby the transmission did make some bad shifts when I got it but now it smooth out its alot nicer to drive than my cx9
I have got a 2025 CX-70 PHEV Premium in new Melting Copper Metallic, and Greige leather int., inbound from port to my dealer this week. I’ve asked other YT reviewers who, like you did, have specifically mentioned the Mazda Turbo S I6 i.c.e. engine computer able to adjust from the recommended (not req’d) 93 octane premium fuel down to 87 Reg. Unleaded with zero knocking or pinging, and with only a 6% loss in hp 340->319. What of the PHEV’s non-turbo I4, which makes 184 hp on its own in many Mazdas and a total combined 323 hp in the CX-70? Before I fill up my new vehicle the first time outside my dealer, I really want to know what I lose
The driver recognition intelligence is my biggest complaint. It's slow to react or often times will not recognize the driver and you can't change it while driving. Basically you have to make the guest recognition match the primary drivers profile. Your review says you can use 87 Octane but the manual clearly says use only 91 or you could damage the emissions system?
@@t.k.morris Completely deactivated driver recognition because it became so annoying. Mazda needs to make an update that allows the driver to manually select a driver profile.
I disagree. I think the best color for this model is the Polymetal Gray with the all of the black accents it has which gives it a stealthier look while not blending in with other gray cars on the road. It still has a certain amont of pop to it
I went to my dealer to order a Soul Red Crystal Metallic CX-70 and first saw the new-for-2025, exclusive to the 2 CX-70 trims, Melting Copper Metallic, on a new vehicle in their showroom. So BOOM went Maxwell’s silver hammer (in this case, more gold) down upon my head!
I have the soul red crystal on my CX90 turbo s premium plus, I can’t speed in this car got pulled over once and two parking tickets in Santa Monica, too noticeable
Love Mazda but the cx70 was clearly a miss from a packing perspective. It should have been and rdx / gv70 size and not the same specs as the cx90. With that said the cx70 is still a solid option but might as well is it go cx90 get 3 rows and fold the 3rd row down.
@@aceofspades6667 bro, pretty much every SUV on the market these days is a "soccer mom grocery getter" 😂🤦♂ That's your opinion. The CX5 or CX50 is the closest thing they have in terms of size compared to the GV70 & RDX in the USA. That is factual.
According to Mazda, the problem with bringing CX-60 here was that it's the same length as CX-50 so they were worried it wouldn't be viewed as much of an upgrade size-wise.

To me this feels more composed and flatter. The MDX had too much body roll for a Type S to me, and this has the superior longitudinal engine, RWD platform. The MDX has a bit more luxury with the ambient lighting and massaging seats, but that's about it.
