I too was disappointed when I first found out it was the same size. But then, I checked it out in June. Test drove it. Showed to my wife. Loved it and bought one. No regrets after 3 thousand miles of driving it 😁
I bought the CX-70 premium turbo S and I am extremely pleased with it. I love the way it looks, handles, the fit and finish and premium materials are amazing. I had a CX-9 for two years and never used the third row once. I just needed the space to haul stuff. By the way, you can choose the volume on the turn indicators in settings. Great review. Thanks.
Thanks for watching and for the nice comment. We also have a CX-9 and have occasionally used the 3rd row but it is folded 95% of the time. I was very skeptical of Mazda for this approach but I think they may be on to something with the 70. I think it will attract buyers as the styling is excellent. One point that got dropped on the editing room floor was the highest trim on the 90 only comes with captain chairs, effectively making it a less versatile 4 passenger when the rear seat is folded. Thanks again for watching and enjoy your 70!
Bought Cx70 top trim Signature, in Canada. No kids and have a large dog. Two rows are perfect. The bin behind the bench seats is perfect for storing his travel stuff.
Glad to hear that they have gotten the 8speed teething issues resolved. I agree that this works great as a roomy two row with a large cargo area. I especially love the three separate spaces to stuff things under the cargo floor….
Thanks for watching and commenting! The 8 speed isn’t perfect yet, but with the excellent fuel efficiency and fun driving dynamics I think a little quirkiness is ok. Thanks again and happy motoring.
@@BeyondTheTestDrive That initially scared me, as this is about to become the only car I’ve ever owned (46 years of driving) with any automatic transmission. At least it’s not a CVT (I like to call it a 1-speed automatic) & is an in-house unit
Thanks for the video. We have a CX9 first gen and were looking into getting the 2nd gen but now that the CX90/70 are out we may look into this. We don't really need the 3 rows anymore, kids are all grown so no more schlepping folks around. I think the CX70 is just the right size and my wife is used to driving her CX9 so she doesn't want to downsize as far as the size of vehicle.
Thanks for watching and for the nice comment. We have lots of CX-90 coverage on the channel and I think the CX-70 will be perfect for your upgrade. Once you get used to the useful larger size of the 9 it would be hard to get something smaller. We have a 9 also and it is used as a two row. Thanks again and happy motoring!
I bought the very first CX70 Premium Plus Turbo S in Soul Red my dealer got when they first started arriving at dealers and very day, I love it more and more. I would NOT have bought a CX90 as I have absolutely no need for a 3 Row SUV. I honestly don't need a SUV as large as the CX70, but the luxury features, comfort style, the sublimely smooth Inline 6 and that typical Mazda driving experience and reliability made the CX70 the right car for me. Thanks for the review, it was very good and I am now a subscriber!
Thanks for watching and for the nice comment. Congrats on your CX-70. That is a great color. Awesome that you found the right car for you. Thanks also for subscribing! Enjoy your CX-70 and happy motoring.
@@BeyondTheTestDrive Thanks. I actually came to the CX70 after buying a 2024 Genesis GV70 Sport Prestige, which the engine blew up at 850 miles. Worst car buying experience of my life. The car is being bought back, but that process is excruciatingly painful and 4 months later, I still don't have my money back. I wanted a car I could count on and I think I've found it in the Mazda.
@@Rodghost1 whoa. That is quite the story. The GV70 and Genesis in general is highly regarded from a design and performance stand point. I have heard nightmare stories like this one also. Glad you will get your money back and that the Mazda works for you. The CX-70 looks as nice and has more room.
@@BeyondTheTestDrive Thanks! I personally think the CX70 is better looking than the Genesis. I actually had two failed GV70s. My first one suffered from the Electronic Slip Differential TWICE before it even hit 7K miles. This is a very common issue with the GV's in general. I should have lemon lawed, the first one but stupidly chose to trade it for a 2024, which as you know, the engine blew on it at 850 miles. Never again, will a Genesis anything be in my garage, that's for sure.

My new CX-70 PHEV Premium (in Melting Copper Metallic with a Greige leather interior) is now incoming from Japan in the next 10 days or so; I had to order one so as to get any interior other than black leather in the Premium or black Nappa leather in the Premium Plus. Since dealers think that all customers’ tastes are just the same, they make sure they allocate all their vehicles just the same. (And forget the competitors’ used vehicles; it’s like the Model T ‘any color so long as it’s black’ out there!), with the -70 (vs. the three trims available with the -90), there are only the two trim levels, so when you kept saying “in the upper trim LEVELS,” or “all but the BASE trims” were you counting the Turbo S and PHEV models separately?
Congrats. Great color. To clarify, should have said the premium plus and the turbo trims is when you get some real choices. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I drove this same model and trim last weekend. Only reason I didn’t buy it was the dealer is 200 miles away. Seven or eight years ago Mazda left the city I live in. Such a fun good looking vehicle to drive.
Thanks for watching. That is a bummer. But if you have a good mechanic near where you live you can have them do the routine maintenance. Of course if there is warranty work that would be a hike. Dealer network is an important factor and does impact Mazda’s overall sales compared to brands like Honda and Toyota with an extensive network. All the best and thanks again for watching.
Excellent and fully encompassing review. I drove this same vehicle a few days ago, my 2021 Honda Passport Lease is up and want to try something different, and not sure when the revised Passport will be coming out. It is a BIG Suv, it felt miles apart and dripping in luxury compared to my 2021 Passport. It feels incredibly planted, the interior is plush and put together immaculately. The made in Japan build quality is very apparent, the panel alignment, stitching and alcantara dash was beyond my expectations. My only ding would be that I am not used to how wide the center console is. I like it because it makes you feel like you are in more of a cockpit, but my right leg will have to get used to that. The brakes were difficult to get used to on a test drive but don’t see it becoming a problem. This might just be my next car. It literally has every option you could ever want. I will also be towing a boat a few times a year. Thanks for this review and you have a new subscriber as well.
Thanks for watching and for the very nice comment! Agree the center console is a beast. But it looks nice with no piano black. Seems like this would work for you. The Turbo S with the tow package will tow 5000 lbs. and there is a tow mode that package unlocks. Keep in touch on what you decide and get. Thanks again for watching and subscribing!
Great review. I've followed the CX-70 & CX-90 since they released and I'm more seriously considering the 70. I don't need a 3rd row, and I've owned two RX-350's, so was glad to hear that comparison. I like the blacked-out chrome, as well as the other exterior design changes on the 70, and prefer the different wheels. Love the inline 6. Wish they had Machine grey metallic paint, with the dark red Napa leather, as my perfect vehicle, but love the Soul Crystal Red Metallic. Zoom zoom!
Sorry for the delayed response. Thanks for watching and for the nice comment! Yes, agree that Mazda should offer some new color combos. That gray and red would be a good one. Thanks again and happy motoring!
Mazda made the perfect 2 row vehicle name me another vehicle that has 300 plus hp 40 cubic feet of storage inline 6 engine rwd bias with awd 25 mpg average and fully loaded for 55k.I brought one 2 months ago could not be happier. Traded my cx9 in. Never used the 3rd row once. Cx70 is alot better looking and sportier than a cx90.

I hav22 MDX Advance - a 3 Row SUV. Same here, in 3 years I have not once used the 3rd Row. In fact, watching other 3 Row SUVs in my neck of the woods (NY Suburbia - Westchester County) , I have not seen any of the 3 Rows SUVs with occupants! I'm being Tempted to go with a new 25 Mazda CX-70 to replace my MDX as my lease was just extended after 3 years for 6 months. I do have an attractive residual Buyout at $35,400 in Feb 2025. I was thinking to buy it out - all cash. But Now second guessing that thought process with a new lease for a 25 CX-70? Kep that cash in the Bank (T Bills actually) which would cut down on tthe monthly lease total cost. That approach would give me a opportunity to then buy out the the CX-70 after the 3 year lease, if so desired and not encountering any Issues. FWIW, the 22 MDX Advance has been a terrifc SUV - only 21K miles on it. Trouble Free all the way. But the 340HP and 369lbs Torque are "alluring" me - In order to get those HP & Torque numbers ina new 25 MDX I would have to go to a Type S which is about $18K MORE.
Thanks for watching. Yes, full time. It is rear wheel biased. The rear wheels do most of the work. The computer will direct power to the front as needed for handling, acceleration, or in slippery conditions.
Thanks for watching but not quite following your comment. The 90 and 70 do have the same leg room in both the front and rear seats. They are both fairly competitive in that regard.
13:55 I think the Turbo Premium Plus & Turbo S Premium are the sweet spot trims of the gas model lineup. Even the Turbo Premium is also a great value for its performance & price
Thanks for commenting. Yea, I like the premium but it does not have that 360 camera so as you state the premium plus is probably where I would also land. But I would also want theTurbo S power but they take away the AC power.
I'm conflicted about leasing the CX-5 Carbon Turbo or Signature trim, as well as the Cx-70 Turbo S Premium trim which looks beautiful in Polymetal Gray with the red Nappa leather interior
🤔Hmm, that’s a tough call. Part of the issue with the lineup now is there is a size and price gap between those two. Hard to beat the space and the style and even the fuel economy of the CX-70 but it is a jump in price compared to the CX-5. The CX-5 turbo is a bit more fun to drive but not nearly as luxurious feeling as the 70. Keep in touch on which way you go.
Come along for the ride! Share your thoughts and questions regarding Mazda's CX-70. Is the CX-70 too big for a two row? Is the 90 too tight for a 3-row? Or has Mazda finally moved to the front of the class giving North American buyers the space they crave.
Was almost going to get the Soul Red Crystal Metallic until I saw the new-for-2025, CX-70 exclusive color, Melting Copper Metallic. Check it out, people!
Most people bash Mazda for having smaller sized cars relative to competition. When they finally release a large 2 row, people complain again, saying it should be shorter than CX-90. Can't please everyone. Lol
Great Practical everyday Revioiew of the CX-70. Good road testing and impressive MPGs for a SUV of this size. In comparison, my 22 MDX Advance , Non Type S, achieves 13-14 Surburbia City MPGs and a Max achieved 24-25 Highway MPGs on the Jersey Trnpk at 70--75 MPH in good weather, non Winter blend gas (Premium). My MDX lease expired _I'm now on a 6 month extension, paying $610 a month and will have a Buy Out of $35,400 by Feb 2025. Only 21K miles on the clock. The CX-70 is wetting my appetite for consideration and I will test drive one soon.
Thanks for watching and for the nice feedback. I do like the MDX V6 and transmission and the refreshed MDX has some nice interior improvements. The CX-70 will do better on gas as you state and I will say the CX-70 is flatter in the turns but the optional SHAWD of the MDX is very good. So you have some good choices. Probably will be driven by finances as that 35k price for a 22 MDX is very attractive.
The reason it is same size is that CX90 next generation will be slightly bigger. People complain about the CX 90 being smaller than other companies so they will increase it in next generation.
Looks like mazda found a good middle ground for power and fuel economy, without the mild hybrid system the fuel economy would have been terrible. Good on mazda to also stay away from dual clutch which is the absolute worse type of transmission for passenger cars , cvt gets alot of trashing , but cvt is much better than dual clutch. The infotainment screen is lame though
Thanks for watching and for the questions. We ran premium but it will take regular. Like most other hybrids and mild hybrids the istop in both the S and non-S will shut off the engine quite a bit when coasting. It’s a very smooth transition. You can disable istop but it will impact with fuel economy.
Thanks for watching. A very good observation and question. It’s not apparent but prior to about 1500 rpm the electric motor of the mild hybrid is helping to shove the CX-70 off the start. The engine is still primary but as you observe it’s doesn’t really get going until 1500 to 2000. But that is mainly sound you hear that makes it seem like a power surge. Since the electric motor is quiet you don’t hear it helping. The mild hybrid system has great torque off the line and throughout the whole rev range.
@@justrelax6866I flip flop back and forth on this but unless you are into new technology and like the idea of a plug in I recommend the six cylinder. I think the six is a little better sorted. The one thing is price. I think the PHEV is eligible for a tax credit if you lease so that makes that compelling if you like to lease. So the PHEV could be a better buy. We do have a review of the CX-90 PHEV on the channel. I personally would go six if I were buying.
Crazy its the same price as the cx90 in the states. Less seats, took away the chrome trim to make it look more sporty less classy look but your paying a luxury car price. Makes no sense. In Australia its 10k less than the cx90.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, pricing is a little strange here in the United States. But you also get the CX-60 and CX-80. Great to hear from folks down under. All the best and happy motoring!
Thanks for watching. Yea, nothing cheap these days. This does undercut Acura, Lexus, and German brands pricing wise. Pricing does start in the low 40’s and those are all well equipped.
Thanks for watching and for the question. The steering can feel fairly heavy. It gets even heavier in sport mode. Maybe do another drive. Some folks like the firmer sportier steering feel but it’s not for everyone.
Not following you on this one. The video never said choose the volume. I think it says something about the blinker seemed a little loud compared to the 90. But I could be imagining it. Mazda is very good about the audible chimes and sounds, this struck me as a little loud. Am I following your comment?
@@BeyondTheTestDrive Unless my Alzheimer’s is kicking in big-time, I thought I heard “Mazda even allows you to choose the volume on the turn indicators.” Hence my quote marks. But I’ll just ignore what I thought/imagined if you tell me to. Just say the word.👍
@@DeeEllEffno but all good. Appreciate you tuning in to the video and sharing your thoughts. Congrats again on your new Mazda and keep in touch on how you like it. I am sure you will love it!
Actually yes, for people that are hearing impaired they can raise the volume of the alerts/chimes. Seems he found a tester where that volume was pre adjusted to its highest level.
I like Mazdas but I don't love how they sold out their customers. Say goodbye to your privacy forever as big tech has even invaded the personal space of your car! How did we allow this to happen? Amazon Alexa is now in most Mazda models. It's definitely in this one. It's listening to your every word.
Thanks for watching. You do bring up a sticky issue. All car companies have been selling our data for years and Mazda has been doing the same. There are ways to disable these but I did not get a chance to see how with this CX-70. Maybe I will do a future story about this. The part about Alexa got left on the cutting room floor. But the summary is is that it’s just plain stupid. Siri is just fine if you use CarPlay. Alexa is hardly useful in a home environment so putting it in a moving vehicle is more distracting than helpful.
You have to sign up your Amazon account for Alexa to be activated. So, you have a problem with it you simply don’t sign into Amazon and you can just use your android or IPhone Siri instead (that I guess will listen to you).
You can opt out of using Mazda Connected Services and the app. There's also a number to call to disable something that communicates with servers, I forget how, but it can be found on Reddit. I'll do so on ours once the trial is over.
CX-70 Preferred and CX-90 Select are ugly as hell with blobby rear, plastic claddings, ugly colors and all-black interiors. They intentionally made them in the way you have to pay $$$ to make it look nice
Thanks for watching. All manufactures have some bare bones base models mainly to help sales related to getting buyers financially qualified. To your point the preferred and select are not the best value when considering options. The black cladding does not go away until you get to the turbo s levels. And manufacturers will always leave a key option out to get buyers up to the next trim, like the surround view camera here on the 70.

Lol
Thanks for watching! Great point and something I also point out in the video. All the best and happy motoring.
Yeah, you did! I've been rewatching too many of these, I guess the lines have blurred.
Thanks for watching and commenting! Definitely a pleasant surprise with its fuel efficiency.
Love that they went with an I-6
Yes, the straight six has a great smooth sound. Thanks for watching and happy motoring!
Are you running premium or regular ? Did you drive the non S model ? I heard it shuts engine off when coasting ?
Thanks for watching and for the questions. We ran premium but it will take regular. Like most other hybrids and mild hybrids the istop in both the S and non-S will shut off the engine quite a bit when coasting. It’s a very smooth transition. You can disable istop but it will impact with fuel economy.
They took out a row of seats and gained one tenth of a cubic foot in cargo space with seats down. What an engineering feat.
Rear tire AND live fish well!!
I'm in
@ 18:00 do you feel the power doesn’t surge until 1900 ish rpm?
Thanks for watching. A very good observation and question. It’s not apparent but prior to about 1500 rpm the electric motor of the mild hybrid is helping to shove the CX-70 off the start. The engine is still primary but as you observe it’s doesn’t really get going until 1500 to 2000. But that is mainly sound you hear that makes it seem like a power surge. Since the electric motor is quiet you don’t hear it helping. The mild hybrid system has great torque off the line and throughout the whole rev range.
Thanks for the info. I was worry that the car has initial hesitation during acceleration. Do you recommend this over the PHEV?
@@justrelax6866I flip flop back and forth on this but unless you are into new technology and like the idea of a plug in I recommend the six cylinder. I think the six is a little better sorted. The one thing is price. I think the PHEV is eligible for a tax credit if you lease so that makes that compelling if you like to lease. So the PHEV could be a better buy. We do have a review of the CX-90 PHEV on the channel. I personally would go six if I were buying.
What ambient lighting??
Thanks for watching. Higher trims have footwell lighting, door pocket lighting plus in the door handles.
Mazda X5 😊
Thanks for watching!
Looks like a neat vehicle. But, $58k for a Mazda??!! Yikes. 🤔
So call it a Lexus, only more fun.
Thanks for watching. Yea, nothing cheap these days. This does undercut Acura, Lexus, and German brands pricing wise. Pricing does start in the low 40’s and those are all well equipped.
I test drove this and thought the steering rigid has anyone experienced this or should I try driving another one?
Thanks for watching and for the question. The steering can feel fairly heavy. It gets even heavier in sport mode. Maybe do another drive. Some folks like the firmer sportier steering feel but it’s not for everyone.
It wants to be an X5 soooo bad.
“Choose the volume on the turn indicators?” How audibly loud the blinker is, seriously? WTF?!?
@@MarshallJames-dh3giGotcha!
Mazda cx60 is much better looking and is a little smaller....why mazda not selling in us.
Because it wasn't certified to be sold here. The CX-90 already was which is why they based the CX-70 on that
still not much room in second row
Really? You need a minivan i guess
Good review. Beautiful green countryside there a bit like the U K here, whereabouts in the states are you?
Thanks for watching and for the nice comment. Great to hear from car fans across the pond. Yes, we have some great rolling countryside here in central Maryland just north of Washington DC. We’ll venture into Virginia and southern Pennsylvania sometimes also. Looking forward to doing some motoring over your way sometime next year. All the best.
