“Can Asia guide Biden on China?” Keynote Speech by Prof. Kishore Mahbubani
At the “INSIGHT FORUM” organised by Our Hong Kong Foundation, eminent global thinker Professor Kishore Mahbubani called on the US to hit the “pause button” on its geopolitical contest against China amidst the raging global pandemic.
Prof Mahbubani, who is a Distinguished Fellow at National University of Singapore’s Asia Research Institute, pointed out that the US trade war against China had hurt the American economy without solving the underlying economic concerns it was meant to resolve. Such policies have not raised America’s standing in the world, neither have they weakened China significantly nor led to the progressive isolation of China from most countries.
He said that the Biden administration should press the “pause button” on the contest, especially when billions of people around the world are suffering from the massive economic recession caused by Covid-19. The only way to jumpstart the global economy is for the world’s two leading powers to work together.

In the 1997-1998 financial crisis caused by the attack of hedge fund to the Thai Baht, most of the Asian countries devalued their currency, following the 'advice' of the US.
The US persuaded hardly China to do the same, but China did not do so after assessing its own situation and that of her neighbors. One of the reasons was to keep the neighbors Asean economy in a more stable condition, including HK, rather than into further turmoil. China believed this was a political responsibility in Asean, even though she suffered a big fall of her exports.
Did the government in Asean countries remember this act of China at that time.
As this wise man said, Asean countries should be, and can be more proactive to work together to restore a more peaceful world, make the US know how to work with Asia and China.
Eventually this is to your benefits too. Asean are not inferior to the west, stand up and exercise your contribution to the world peace.
Prof. Mahbunani has done us, the little dot proud on the world stage.

What Kishore Mabhubani spoken are golden advices to all leaders of the nations. In this globalized world and there is no way to isolate a nation by mean of sanction of any kind. There left only one choice, that is to achieve global order and coorporation for a better world. We are no enemy to each other, but to share the economy, trades, friendship, and be in equality. The world would be peaceful, prosperous, and beautiful if we realize it...
The strategy of the US is to rally its allies on two fronts, one using so-called human rights on the western frontier of Xinjiang and the other militarily on the eastern frontier of East and South China Seas by flexing military muscles in the hope of bringing China to its knees. But this strategy is known to most Chinese and doomed to fail. Obviously, all these American moves are responded only by the small circle of allies it has, i.e. Japan, Australia, Canada and European Union( not all nations in this grouping are in full agreement with the US). The US should not forget that the world is not composed of only these nations.

After Blinken's visit to EU, EU issued sanctions on Xinjiang's officials and US, Canada and UK followed suit one day later. US carried out marine military exercises with Australia, Japan in South China Sea, and recently with France, Japan in South Japan, and will join forces with UK naval fleet to carry out military drills in South China Sea. Are these not evidences of USA attacking China on two fronts?

I really love Prof Kishore speech,..he sees China -US relations as comprehensive, very insightful point of views. Asian should choose and decide our own destiny for what is good to us. US and western should not live in century and want to monopoly all the countries like what they did in the past. Trying to stop China is impossible as they have the most population in the world, same goes to India

I'm afraid many have bought the propaganda of western colonial powers bringing development to their colonies. They developed the country they RULED! for their own exploitation. If WWII had not happened the colonised will still to be exploited. When the world went against colonisation they were forced to give up. The colonised realised their masters are really nobodies. Many of the non-western societies have to wake up to this truth. Stop your blind admiration. The West is developed now bcos of their exploitation of the rest of the world and the wealth they amassed had been used in science and technology while the rest of the world is languishing in poverty or underdevelopment bcos they were EXPLOITED.

America is an almost 530 years old nation. 1492 was when America was discovered. That's when the first European settlers started pouring into America. Before that, the native Americans used to dominate entire North America, or indigenous people so to speak. Of course, now it's the white Americans who dominate America and white Canadians who dominate Canada. The same is true for Australia and New Zealand where white Australians dominate over the tribes of Australia and white Kiwis dominating over Maoris in New Zealand.

Your third point is exactly why the US has to stop Asia from developing further into an amazing era. Mr Mahbubani has plenty of good insights, but I think he still don't get it that the goal of the US is to destabilize other parts of the world, and any nations that may become a threat to its power. Fortunately, there is nothing it can do about the rise of China, anything it is doing now will only hurt itself down the track, and speed up it demise.

Kishore is a very accomplished person and you are thinking he doesn't get it that US is an imperialistic beast and thrives on instability.
