Chappelle said "“who cares what a celebrity has to say right now" but then spent almost 30 mins on the police brutality issue and everyone watched and raved that he addressed the issue on the streets. Clearly lots of people care..Lemon didn't even respond to the Chappllle calling him out because he got Chappelle to do what he asked him to do.
People had an issue with J Cole because he claimed that he doesn't know enough while he's out there on the streets working his activism. Also for what he perceives as not to know enough of, there are plenty of articles written by fellow activists that he could easily Google or contact them about. He spent half of the track saying how he read her timeline and summarized what he got from it but her tone and her perceived hate in that 1 tweet is what REALLY got to him????

White dude and non-cole fan here, I respected Rory’s take on the situation but at the end of the day, I think that cole was (in a way) simply defending himself. I am not going to lead the charge in speaking my mind but it just seems like calling out someone like cole is counter productive because of his past actions, artistry, and his avoidance of soical media. @@Jbourbz it's not that their take was wrong...the issue is that they would only acknowledge the offense that J Cole offered, and refused to acknowledge that Noname started the whole thing. Anytime a topic like this comes up they tow the exact same line...it's annoying and cowardly. Even after Joe and Mal tried to press them and make them focus on Noname's role, they refused.
At the end of the day Noname has enough "clout" to reach out to the rappers she was blasting and help them to galvanize their influence. this would've been so much more effective. instead she chose to "shame" them (funny how women like to use that term so much). When addressing someone, you do it respectfully. Tone plays a part in whether what you say sounds respectable or disrespectful, and condescending. Nothing was wrong with J. Cole's song. It was not offensive or disrespectful.
I don't agree with anybody saying the song is sexist, but part of Cole's message IS to "Get off your high horse". The other part of the message is "Show us how we can do better." which can also be interpreted as a snarky. It's like when you're doing something your way, and someone tells you "Nah don't do it like that." And then you snap back "Well why don't you show me how to do it since you have an opinion?!" But I'd like to think Cole was being sincere with that message.
All in all, I don't think Cole was wrong for making the track, and I don't feel like people were wrong for feeling some kind of way, but I don't think it's a beef.
