Actually love my Honeytone. It takes fairly well to pedals (harmonic response with a tubescreamer is absolutely fantastic), the onboard overdrive is halfway decent, and like you said, it gets surprisingly loud.
cool, hey if it works for you that's awesome! these are just my own personal experiences, and tone is completely subjective. I would never try to tell someone they are wrong about tone. :)
I know your comment was 5 years ago, but respect to you man for encouraging people to like what they like, instead of pushing them to something they're not used to
I wanted to add one thing to my comment below. I have found the Danelectro mini amp when used with cigar box guitars, combined with Ammoon Pockrock Portable Guitar Effects box to be phenomenal. When all combined it delivers a loud as hell, sleezy, rip yo throat out sound. Try it out Lo Fi fiends.
I am a big fan of home made cigar box guitar. I love the sound you get when you plug one of these into Danelectro mini amp. Turn it up. You get a mean, nasty, gritty gut bucket sound! If you are looking for ugly, ugly, ugly, primitive street corner cigar box blues sound this is it! The best. If you are looking for anything else then forget it. Lo fi fiends rejoice.
I owned Fender MiniTwin, Blackstar Fly3, Vox AmpPlug+Cabinet, and my rating (out of 10) are; 8 for Fly-3, 6 for AmpPlug+cabinet, 3 for Fender Mini Twin
I'm hearing good things about the 'Spamp.' A guy in England is making mini amps from recycled Spam canisters. He's using JFET's, and the things are supposedly LOUD. Don't know if they count because it's definitely not a 'big boy' manufacturer, but they're out there.
Ever seen a Laney lionheart mini? It's a 2 by 3" 6 watt with two channels, drive, volume, master, and built in delay. Also a tone bridge phone connector and app to turn a smart phone into a virtual effect pedal. About $130 Yankee dollars. and it runs on batteries. I run mine off the end of a one spot daisy chain with a mini disnortion fuzz and the good ol guyatone mini chorus while playing a Strobel rambler. The entire rig could fit in carry on and it sounds incredible. I've had the the boss and the Laney at the same time and while the boss mini is good with decent distortion and tone control, the Laney just sounds more like a tube amp to me. Richer. Wider.
I use a micro marshall on my Dean Electric resonator...Used it at the Rainbow in Hollywood and used it at Tootsies in Nashville.Stick a mic in front of it and it rocks...Used one for years.
I modified a cheap no-name 9-volt guitar amp years ago with fantastic results. I removed the circuit board from the amps housing, jumped 2-resistors before the tone control and over volted the amps final power transistor by feeding it directly from the battery. I then mounted the naked board on top of a Sony 3.5" enclosed speaker from an old surround sound system. The result was this super charged distortion with a crazy harmonic feedback sustain that made me sound like a guitar wizard. I was able to get about 30 minutes of use out of it before the pa transistor self destructed. I wish I would've took pics of the board and noted the transistor number before I destroyed it.
Yes, the Fender Mini can sound pretty bad, but not always. Turn tone and gain down, add a reverb ped, and you get a pretty good clean sond. If you wanna go dirty, be very carefull with the gain, not much is ness. But best, put a drive pedal, and you get big tone with great feedback, just keep tone down, and gain under strict control.
I have owned a couple of Honeytone amps. I own one now. There are some that have SOLD on eBay for $47. (wow) But if you catch Musicians Friend during a sale you can get them for $15, which is about what they are worth. I gave a Honeytone to a neighbor when I gave him a Lyon pseudo-Strat to learn how to play on. Honeytone can actually be Loud if you crank-up the Gain. But those have never been more than a Toy. And a practice tool. Or just something to annoy the cat.
I think that you need to keep in mind what they are for. When you compare the Honeytone to the Blackstar, they are totally different concepts. The Marshall MS2 would be a better comparison because they both have belt clips and run on 9v batteries. They can be taken anywhere because they are light weight. I just bought a Honeytone and it doesn't sound that bad clipped to your belt playing your favorite tunes in the middle of the forest or something. I know the Katana and the Blackstar sound much better, but they take a bunch of batteries, weigh more, don't have a belt clip, and won't fit in your bag. For what it is, the Honeytone sounds vintage and good. I also have a first edition Orange Crush Micro and the HoneyTone does not sound that good in comparison, but the Orange is heavy, bulky, and has guitar strap buttons. If you want a sucky mini amp, I have a Smokey and that takes the cake for terrible sound.
Yes. I tried the Fender Mini Twin here in Japan (among others), and it sounds like empty beer cans rolling downstairs. I have a few VOX mini's because I travel a lot, and I settled for the VOX AC2Rhyhm, that I believe just hit the US. I got it here in Japan and it is excellent.
haha. I think beer cans probably sound better, because at least you have a buzz by then :P haha. Ya Vox have done a great job on the mini line in general
Do you agree with my list? What's your worst mini amp experience? I don't recommend it, but you can buy them through the following affiliate sites: Sweetwater: imp.i114863.net/meoBD Amazon (US) amzn.to/2TpipZ2 Thomann: bit.ly/3dWZVbV
I like the honey tone strictly for the belt clip, I don’t want to carry the amp around w me, if it has to be stationary I’m warming up the tubes in my ac-30
It's all about the artist and the speaker. The first amplifiers had crummy tone. The sears silver tone had this horrible solid state sounding clean tone that people actually worked with. Try dropping a better speaker on a crummy amp. If you can't make a cheap acoustic sound like a daydream. You can't make high end equipment sound like an actual nightmare.
Dunno much about mini amps, but if it counts, my Yamaha 25 watt (?) amp that I got for 2 bucks at a yard/estate sale. The pots are crusty and it is missing a foot, but it works fine otherwise. I use it as a keyboard amp.
I heard about the ms2 having some issues, i still really wanted one though I I checked the reviews on Amazon there were several sellers. Some sellers got great reviews and others got extremely bad reviews I bought mine from solo music gear and I've had no issues so far. But don't expect it to sound like a million bucks. I truely believe the quality depends on were you buy them from
The problem with ALL mini amps are the same.... Not tone, not loudness, but speaker size. You ain't going to get a full amp sound out of 3" speakers. The Fly 3 with ext. cab gets close, but I always detested the thin sound that these micro amps have. They all sound like a small transitor radio. I know that the portability factor is why you can't compare to even a small practice amp. Also, if it had delay or reverb like the Fly it makes a BIG difference.
Totally agree with the Fender Mini Twin because I got one. I’ve been waiting for a good mini amp that is portable and has that Bose affect where a small box can sound pretty great. Seems like the Boss and FLY fit that category.
I don’t dislike the honey tone that much obviously it isn’t the best but I like it just because they are portable and they do have that classic sound I like. My favorite part that i can clip on my belt and I can go to a park or place just to play and if I don’t to disturb I can just plug in headphones.
Yes I have tried the Fender and I have to say it was awful just a toy. In comparison the Blackstar kicks all the other little amps into the trash where they belong IMHO.
I bought the Blackstar Misfits mini, it's really cool, and also got the Blackstar V3 10 watt small amp, and OMG it's phenomenal!! I like both but esp. the latter. I got the latter specifically for the crunch channels, you can just dial in The Smithereens or whatever fast, I love it.
I a Honey by Dano and it has a leather handle! I was using it for a test amp on my work bench but it makes so much noise on it's own that I just have it sitting on the bench. I knock it off on to the floor and it still works. I have to keep it because it was a gift. I thought that if someone thinks of me enough to buy me something I will keep it. This stupid amp was new and my friend didn't know how bad it sucks. It won't break and I am stuck with it.
See above comment. ;) The Honeytone's problem is that it has an utterly horrible speaker - the amplification circuit itself isn't bad and is actually pretty good; played through a 25-watt 2.1 system it sounds markedly better.
ive found that with the honeytone, its hit or miss, ive seen people get shit ones, ive seen people get little gems that sound like gold, i think they just have poor quality control
It's not so much about quality control as just knowing how to use them. When I first got my Honeytone, I thought it was awful. As I got more knowledgeable about tone and how to dial in different tones properly on it, it got a lot more versatile for me. Also helps a lot to use a good OD or distortion pedal with it. There is also video with Dimebag Darrell killing it on the Marshall mini stack; dive bombs and everything. Ultimately, these little amps are just speakers; it's all about how you use them.
I was glad the Orange 3W Micro Crush didn't make this list. Also it isn't on the other list of Top 3 . So where is it? It's a solid little amp under $80
for me personally it would be a distant 4th in my top 3 list. I find it a little fizzy for my tastes and it doesn't have the same kind of low end as any of the top 3 I picked. but thats just me 😁🎸
Pip Rivers do new PCs still come with an internal speaker? I haven't bought one in 10 years or so en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_speaker sounds like they use Piezoelectric speaker now
I did some research and it seems as though piezoelectric speakers are mainly used for beeping sounds- like for error messages and that sort of thing I guess. Anyway, they definitely still make external speakers that are designed to be used with PCs. www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=pc+speakers
Ah ok. Sorry about that. I wasn't trying to insult your intelligence or anything- you seem like a smart guy which is why I was curious. Anyway, I learned something new so at least it wasn't a total waste of time. After watching your top 3 video, I'm probably going to purchase either the Katana or the Black Star amp to do some electro-busking with. Thanks for the vids.
I agree. My first practice amp as a newbie was the Marshall stack mini. It was awful. Blackstar Fly 3 blows them all out of the water. Great little amp with great big sound and very reasonable price. Takes pedals too.
+Bella Chi Hopefully this helps people avoid wasting their time on the junky ones. Luckily none of them are expensive, and usually around the same cost as the Fly 3 😁
Oh c'mon! Marshall sounds great with dying battery full cranked and covered with cussion. I'm not kidding. That was my usual setting as a kid trying not to upset parents at night. Very fuzzy & vintage-ish ;)
I like all these mini amp videos you do because you are honest in your personal opinion. Think you can make a Fly 3 vs the new Vox AC2? I'd like to hear your thoughts on the AC2, given all your experience with minis.
Ryan Ashbaugh hey thanks. ya I bought those amps so I have no problem saying how I believe they sound. I haven't seen that Vox amp yet, I'll have to check it out.
I agree the danelectro sounds bad, however at one time it was actually one of the better ones, then blackstar, nux, and boss came along and changed the playing field.
Change your ears. I have one it's utterly terrible, get yourself a fly3 or microcube if you need something on batteries, you'll never use the Marshall again I guarantee it.
I have the Vox Mini G2, now THAT'S a good practice portable amp! Totally good and usable. I'm also told the Roland Mini Cube is THE mini amp to buy, it's absolutely as good as promised, and can pump out some real volume, but it sounds quality. The really tiny minis are toys, no doubt about it. I even bought the Katana Mini and I'm already ready to give it away. Not great.
I think they all kinda suck now. The only small practice amps I like that I own are the Roland Micro Cube, and the Vox G2 mini. Otherwise, most tiny amps just have no power to 'em and that's a major problem for me playing blues and rock.
I had a HoneyTone for a few years - not only was it useless for tone, but it developed a rattle. It certainly was loud. Wound up giving that away to Value Village. I needed a small amp for a 12th Doctor cosplay last year, so I tried out a number of mini amps. After going through the Fenders, I discovered the Mini Deluxe was the least objectionable, and actually had some decent gain. With that one, I discovered one trick with that is to turn the tone knob all the way to the right, it removes the fartiness. It can also pull off a decent clean if the gain is down. I now use it at home mostly to practice, and also to use when re-wiring a guitar to monitor the results
ive had one for a few years as well, its been reliable as hell with decent sound, so maybe its just that they have quality control where some batches are utter shit, others are great
I haven't heard or scene one in person, but I would hope they are better than the honeytone. if it is similar to the honeytone, then I wouldn't be interested in it :)
Haha, of course they sound weird and can't be compared to even cheap full size amps because they aren't normal amps. Main purpose to use them is alternative to playing on unplugged guitar when you can't use your gig (deep night and your neighbors has sensitive ears as Mr.Spock, you're simply traveling, etc) but don't like to play in headphones. They are very small, sound somehow (you can recognize notes while playing), they're cheap (but could be more cheaper if manufacturers would remove this shitty drive and tone knobs!!), don't require external power and can fit to any bag or backpack. Personally I would prefer 9v amps, because I always have few 9v batteries for pedals. That's all.
@Lando27music sometimes I like play at the park just to practice and whit some friends. Can you recommend me a mini amp just to play white some noise around
The fender mini twin is better than the frontman 10g saying from experience My 10g just randomly had a stroke and started sounding like it was sparking itself to death
They are toys yes... but how else you gonna get anything else in an airport bag to take when your working away from home? That's my need... I have my guitar from UK working in Saudi Arabia... I need a little amp to pack in my bag...bought a 10 watt...its fine. My 100 watt orange amp at home is incredible..but its at home where I can't play it.
The Vox Mini Amps are really good. I would recommend any of those. Even the Pathfinder 15 or 10, while not having massive power, sound damned good, are reliable, and they look fantastic. Excellent bedroom amps. I also used to extract a nice fuzztone out of the Pathfinder with my Epiphone LP 100, with the gain up to a certain level (maybe at 3 pm), it was really neat.
I'm wondering i land on your channel more frequently...maybe i should subscribe some day! I own the Danelectro, Orange and the Vox...they all suck but look cool. I never will be without the cool Danelectro 😁
I have this Marshall and it's just utter trash, I've yet to hear something that sound worse (I didn't hear the Fender tho), even the Vox Amplug has a better tone. Get yourself a real amp, you'll never use this again.
Has a guy try to sell me the marshall on the list. Wanted more than he bought it for. said it was Marshall, so it sounded good, but wouldnt let me hear it. now i know why. lol
So true! I have all three and agree on all points. The Honeytone is so bad it's the only one I have away. I would also add the Orange Crush Micro. The headphone output on that one is so so and maybe a redeeming feature. By size, weight and cost it matches the Fly...but a crappy sounding toy in comparison.
I'm waiting to receive my Fly 3 with cabinet but saw the Honeytone. It looked pretty cool. I'm relieved that they don't compare! I can see buying one in the future though, simply because it's so portable.
Tyler! Have the Blackshear Fly. Like you said it's a good little amp to noodle on the couch. I also have a Pignose that's great for portability and sounds good. I had a Vox Ac30 mini plug amp. Sadly, it just stopped working.
Little to no effort there explanation or critique. It kinda sounds like my little cousin . With him it's epic or it sux no reasons so it's not helpful in the slightest . Your still left no better understanding of the product than u started out with it's a pity to. I see potential here !
The best button of the Fender's the OFF button.
haha I love it! it's a shelf ornament/line tester at best.
Lmfao!!!!
@@landonbailey when you're like me you take what you can get
Even the larger practice amps are shit. I have a frontman 10g and it's one of the worst amps I've heard.
Actually love my Honeytone. It takes fairly well to pedals (harmonic response with a tubescreamer is absolutely fantastic), the onboard overdrive is halfway decent, and like you said, it gets surprisingly loud.

I use two danelectro
with a boss mt 50 camping ect great fun. You can get a decent sound through the boss but on thier own yip they do suck😎
These if you disconnect the internal speaker and connect a good 8 ohm speaker it puts out great sound! Plus great volume for clean or dirty.
I like to use tube screamers through the blackstar fly's clean channel. It comes out pretty well
I know your comment was 5 years ago, but respect to you man for encouraging people to like what they like, instead of pushing them to something they're not used to
I like the Honeytone. I know it doesnt sound that great but its only like 20 - 30 bucks and can get really loud as you said.
The Danelectro probably works better and worse with certain guitars. It sounds great for what I want it to do! Crunch tones for days
yeah, if your using a high end guitar it sounds like crap, if your using budget guitars like squier its great
I'd have to assume they sound pretty good with some lipstick pickups best, or just any lower voltage pickups

I turned a Danelectro Honeytone into a tube amp. Works off a 12v supply.

Thanks for cutting right to the Chase in the first 30 seconds.
Is fender mini 65' good
probably not
@@landonbailey what about Fender Frontman 10G I'm planing to get it
I would recommend the Vox Pathfinder over that. the 10G is one of the worst amps I've tried
@@landonbailey ok thx
I like all these mini amp videos you do because you are honest in your personal opinion. Think you can make a Fly 3 vs the new Vox AC2? I'd like to hear your thoughts on the AC2, given all your experience with minis.
Ryan Ashbaugh hey thanks. ya I bought those amps so I have no problem saying how I believe they sound. I haven't seen that Vox amp yet, I'll have to check it out.
This is a Butt 3, not a Top 3…
I agree the danelectro sounds bad, however at one time it was actually one of the better ones, then blackstar, nux, and boss came along and changed the playing field.
The marshall in a cab sounds awesome
Change your ears. I have one it's utterly terrible, get yourself a fly3 or microcube if you need something on batteries, you'll never use the Marshall again I guarantee it.
I would never even consider buying any of the amps on your list. It's obvious that they are toys.
I have the Vox Mini G2, now THAT'S a good practice portable amp! Totally good and usable. I'm also told the Roland Mini Cube is THE mini amp to buy, it's absolutely
as good as promised, and can pump out some real volume, but it sounds quality. The really tiny minis are toys, no doubt about it. I even bought the Katana Mini
and I'm already ready to give it away. Not great.
Whats good and bad tone?
tone is the sound you hear. good and bad tone are personal taste. it's never right or wrong
I think they all kinda suck now. The only small practice amps I like that I own are the Roland Micro Cube, and the Vox G2 mini. Otherwise, most tiny amps just have no power to 'em
and that's a major problem for me playing blues and rock.
They’re pretty good for demos if your a traveling musician.
I now use it at home mostly to practice, and also to use when re-wiring a guitar to monitor the results
hey cool thanks for the tips for anyone that might own one :)
ive had one for a few years as well, its been reliable as hell with decent sound, so maybe its just that they have quality control where some batches are utter shit, others are great
I got the ms2c and found that its better at being an od pedal than amp lol.
Just plug the headphone out into an amp
+Andrew Lodge ha good idea!
THE GREEN MILE
Kilometers in Canada
Cool decorations. I don't even use the blackstar anymore
what do you think about danelectro hodad mini amp compared to honeytone
I haven't heard or scene one in person, but I would hope they are better than the honeytone. if it is similar to the honeytone, then I wouldn't be interested in it :)
I agree most of these little amps suck really bad. IT shows me that the company's that make them dont care as long as they make a buck.ROCK ON PILGRIM
The worst mini amp I ever had was the danelectro honey tone.
That's all.
check out my videos about the Blackstar fly 3 and kanata mini. they are awesome
@Lando27music sometimes I like play at the park just to practice and whit some friends.
Can you recommend me a mini amp just to play white some noise around
Kevin Mendoza Can't go wrong with the Blackstar Fly 3. 😁
lando27music thanks a lot greetings from Mexico 😊
No problem! Take care
This is a really great channel
hey thanks!
The fender mini twin is better than the frontman 10g saying from experience
My 10g just randomly had a stroke and started sounding like it was sparking itself to death
I had a Frontman and chucked it in the dumpster when I moved last year. It was just never good.
Thank you so much! I guess I wanna FLY! Fly 3!
Go for it!
I personally find the honeytone pretty good but it’s your opinion
no issues with them Lisa - low price and fun to use !
Spot on review ...!
thanks!
In my opion thay all come out the the same factory all of them that are 40 dollers.
So what is it?
it is in the video
They are toys yes... but how else you gonna get anything else in an airport bag to take when your working away from home? That's my need... I have my guitar from UK working in Saudi Arabia... I need a little amp to pack in my bag...bought a 10 watt...its fine. My 100 watt orange amp at home is incredible..but its at home where I can't play it.
The Danelectro Hodad DH-2 isn't bad, IMHO.
Honey tone is 20 dollars my dude
$40 in Canada
Good to hear vox AC2 is not in there 😎
I haven't played a Vox that I didn't like. 😁👍
The Vox Mini Amps are really good. I would recommend any of those. Even the Pathfinder 15 or 10, while not having massive power, sound damned good, are reliable,
and they look fantastic. Excellent bedroom amps. I also used to extract a nice fuzztone out of the Pathfinder with my Epiphone LP 100, with the gain up to a certain
level (maybe at 3 pm), it was really neat.
For led zeppelin solos practice works amazing all .
Love my fender mini twin and the marshall in a cab is great too.
The Fly is Lord.
The fender mustang mini amp is pretty good
Wtf I got the Marshall it’s amazing it might be a different model but it’s a good amp
I'm wondering i land on your channel more frequently...maybe i should subscribe some day!
I own the Danelectro, Orange and the Vox...they all suck but look cool.
I never will be without the cool Danelectro 😁
I am going to guess that you don't know how to get TONE out of a guitar without it going rawrrrrrrrr. Fender is great for tone. you know clean tone.
wrong guess
What about Vox mini 3
It’s on my list of best mini amps
micro terror sound amazing to me and it's a mini amp
The background music sounds like a chili peppers song what's it called someone help me please!!
That marshall with an OD pedal sounds pretty sick, used to use that at the music academy.
I have this Marshall and it's just utter trash, I've yet to hear something that sound worse (I didn't hear the Fender tho), even the Vox Amplug has a better tone. Get yourself a real amp, you'll never use this again.
try pignose,believe me
I have the little Marshall and it sucks. So does my little pig nose
Nah, nah nah...😅
Bottom 3? :)
ya a top 3 list of the worst (or bottom), to me anyways. just my personal experience/opinions
Good bro
I just wanna buy Fender Mini amp!
I like your video hate the amps 😃
+Krusty Buzzard me too!
Has a guy try to sell me the marshall on the list. Wanted more than he bought it for. said it was Marshall, so it sounded good, but wouldnt let me hear it. now i know why. lol
+alein81902 Brutal! If someone won't let you try gear, walk away! oh well, you can always resell it to someone 🎸🤣😉🎸🗑🗑
I didnt buy it I was saving for and then bought the Katana 100 thanks for the content
+alein81902 oh good! I misread it. cool that Kat 100 is great!
So true! I have all three and agree on all points. The Honeytone is so bad it's the only one I have away. I would also add the Orange Crush Micro. The headphone output on that one is so so and maybe a redeeming feature. By size, weight and cost it matches the Fly...but a crappy sounding toy in comparison.
I think some people like the Fizz/Fuzz you can do with the Micro crush. it was close to being on the list. probably would have been 4th. :)
I'm waiting to receive my Fly 3 with cabinet but saw the Honeytone. It looked pretty cool. I'm relieved that they don't compare! I can see buying one in the future though, simply because it's so portable.
The mini tweed in a 12” speaker sounds amazing you should try.
No shit
Tyler! Have the Blackshear Fly. Like you said it's a good little amp to noodle on the couch. I also have a Pignose that's great for portability and sounds good. I had a Vox Ac30 mini plug amp. Sadly, it just stopped working.
Not sure why my previous comment started with Tyler! 😄
But they take pedals well…
I disliked cause of superman
is he in the video?
@@landonbailey lol sorry, dumb joke, you where wearing a Batman shirt.
ha ok!
Yeah, I bought the fender. Looks awesome, but sounded pretty ugly.
Little to no effort there explanation or critique. It kinda sounds like my little cousin . With him it's epic or it sux no reasons so it's not helpful in the slightest . Your still left no better understanding of the product than u started out with it's a pity to. I see potential here !
Sue is that the same as sounds like shit?
Krusty Buzzard Sue?
lando27music typo.sux was the word.
+Krusty Buzzard ahah ok! was wondering when I talked about Sue?!? leave her out of this. 😁🤣
lando27music you'll never hear that name come from my mouth again bud promise.
