I remember the video you made about this. That farmer should be in prison. We get told regularly about environmental issues and to have such devastation to a waterway is outrageous. A settlement out of court is no better than the judge taking a backhander.
Pollution does bad things to rivers. I was down the march the other Sunday against pollution. To be fair a few anglers turned up. You did the right thing making this video, pollution needs to be highlighted because it will ruin our rivers if it isn't stopped. Tight lines mate
shocking to see but they get away with it so many times or just a simple fine which makes it cheaper for the farmers just to dump his crap in the canals and rivers ect, most of our water companys have been doing it for years. great vid pal and lets hope the canal recovers
Monster pike at the end! One of the catch and release creeks in my house had a huge fish kill. A farmer had just finished putting down his fertilizer for the year. An unforcasted downpour happened and washed some of the fertilizer into the creek. Massive fish kill. The fish from upstream repopulated the lower sections of the creek. Accidents do happen but that particular farmer in your video seems negligent.
Farmers have a duty of care ... they should be mindful of the weather forecast for at least 10 days into the future... there are also perimeter distances around waterways that farmers must obey when spreading slurry... but they couldn't be arsed ... In 2016 our club river had a devastating pollution incident. Instead of fertilising his orchards from an anaerobic digester, the digestate found its way into our river, taking out an estimated 15,500 fish including wild brown trout, eels and lamprey. The farmer had been compliant with the Environment Agency but was still fined over £60,000 by the Magistrates. The EA restocked with many thousands of chub, dace and roach but couldn't restock with fertile brown trout. It has taken most of this time for trout to return to our stretches but we are now catching wild fish again. As a club we are members of The Angling Trust and through Fish Legal claimed compensation from the farmer which went some way towards softening the disappointment of the pollution.

Makes me sick seems like it's only fisherman that actually care about our river systems. The farmer should be fined for the clean up and restocking it looked a nightmare mate.
Very sad but well reported. Feargal Sharkey could include canals in his mission to prevent pollution in natural waterways from human and agricultural waste 😞
Its not as easy as you say. The slurry is organic fertilizer. The farmer has to make large scaled agricultures because we are so many people as we are on the globe. Remember those farmers feed quite many people in your country and you cannot just stop him. In denmark we have precautions with zones near waters and so on to prevent this. This is not simple as you make it. The nitrogen in the slurry and one of the biggest nutritional needs of plants are also extremely soluable in water and therefore travels a long way in the ground. And also in high amounts make oxygen crash in waters
The same sort of thing happened at Bardney Lock on the Witham a few years ago. The farmer sprayed pesticides into the canal and killed about 1000 fish. I fished it before which was amazing, and after, not knowing what had happened, and blanked. The lock keeper came out and told us what went on.
Annual profit from muck spreading without carrying out the proper checks = £10,000 Annual fines paid for muck spreading without carrying out the proper checks = £0 Since new legislation was brought in to protect canals and other waterways from pollution from farms improperly fertilizing in 2018, exactly no proceedings have been brought, and no fines have been issued. None. The farmer settled out of court here, but an out of court settlement could be accepting a warning, or promising to observe the rules in future in place of other sanctions. It is not neccessarily monetary. There is no deterrent against this happening, and the minimal consequences are a tacit encouragement. Even if the pollution is severe enough to warrant criminal charges being brought, any monies raised from a fine go to central government, where it is swallowed up, and the locals will never see a penny of it. All the businesses that lost out, and everybody who had to clean and decontaminate thier boats and other equipment, will have to carry the cost on thier own. We have to keep the pressure on local government and the environmental agencies. This happens far too often, and the longer we stay silent, the more it will happen. Keep at them, and report very single instance you see.
Pretty sure the origianl video was the first video of yours i wafched. Think it will be a good 5 to 10 years before that canal starts to puck up again. But not if the farmer continues to destroy it.
@@adventurefishinguk I know of two farmers who have a plane and runway, they own vast amounts of land, with livestock and crops, I've seen farmers block footpaths and make it different for people to access the countryside, I've seen them fill in ponds, and destroy trees and wildlife habit, they also kill birds of prey, yep being 74 I have seen it all my life.
unfortunately, in the summer of 2022, the same accident happened in Estonia, where silage water from a farm leaked into the river Umbusi and more than five thousand brown trout were killed. Fishing is still prohibited on this river.
What else would you expect. Rich landowners with connections in high places get away with it all the time and now they want to dodge the 20% inheritance tax.
The fish are still there pal I had numerous doubles from that stretch last year on deadbait my pal also had his pb of 16lb down there so they are still there I might have a shorts video of a lure caught one I had down there aswell on my channel 👍
@alison8526 it's my latest two shorts one with my daughter holding a fish and the other of me hooking the fish close in they are not doubles the bigger fish I have pictures of were caught on deadbaits the two in the shorts are lure caught biggest being about 9lb
Heartbreaking situation(s)! It never should have happened even the first time! Had similar situation when relocated to Cyprus from Essex…beautiful dam (achna) full of carp (average 5lb to 6lb) but then water completely disappeared. After couple of weeks they pumped it full again. All fish lost. Again…heartbreaking
It's cheaper for them to pay the fine, that's why they dump it in the river. They have been doing it for years in northern Ireland, most of our local rivers have been decimated!
I support the farmers with what they are going through right now with the government attempting to put then out of business and steal their land however this particular farmer should be closed down, heavily fined and put in prison. It is obvious to me that this is quite deliberate and has now happened multiple times.
Surly he cant be allowed to be a farmer after numerus environmental violation. A government agench should close his facility down as the fatmer clearly have no respect either for nature or otherfarmes who will get a backlash from this. Good on ya George useing the platform.
That Farmer should have faced huge reparations to fix the place. Reminds me of the recent stretch in Walsall that got impacted by corporate chemical spills. Doesn't seem like anyone will be held to a serious account there either.
Same thing happened to a local pond near me about 20 years ago a lot of specimen fish wiped out and it never recovered they filled it in not that long ago n made a new pond in the local park great fishing but no wear near as special as the old pond doh the angling club tried to save what they could but the best stomp of fish were dead sad to see alright
Where is the canal? Who is the farmer? Surely this is all in the public domain. This information could help others to be vigilant and hopefully ensure that either it doesn’t happen again or the perpetrator gets dealt with effectively and appropriately.
Do we know if Fish Legal have are aware or have been involved? They are usually very keen to ensure people who cause pollution are held to account. If there is clear evidence of further incidents by the same farmer then surely they need to be subject to further prosecution with a more significant fine or a prison sentence. The treatment of our waterways in pursuit of profit is an absolute scandal . There needs to be more done to highlight this appalling behaviour
i am just saying ..looking at it it looks like there a hell of lot weed could that also be the cause of it.. as the weed grows it need,, Duckweed is a mass of small plants that group together to form larger “carpets” that we see on rivers. Most varieties of duckweed you are likely to see are native to the UK and are often put into ponds in gardens and rivers Though they can quickly get out of hand it not treated will know. The mass of plants can double in size every two or three days meaning it can spread quickly and The plants are eaten by aquatic animals and fish and , washed down through the system during heavy rain or die off during winter conditions... so that might be one problem the weed...that caused it.. and starving the fish of oxergen... good video and yes as every said it sad and i agree all fishemen should take there stuff home after i been fishing i always spend and extra 30 seconds just looking around my fishing area to see i dropped anyting anything..its
We had the same thing on our river by a big business, emptying the wash water into the shuck then into the river and killed thousands of wild brown, sea trout and salmon parr, £2000 fine and hes done it a few times,
That’s such a shame to hear, it becomes a real problem when environmental issues are caused by cost cutting, and fines are smaller than the amount saved
It defo does, we watch him like a hawk now, our river bounced back and is producing some fine fish but we are vigilant and patrol quite regularly, if your ever over here ill take you for a day on it,
Most farmers care but there's a few that just prioritise themselves over everything else and unfortunately they are often.the ones who know the right people who can make consequences go away. Likely he will not change his behavior.
Yeah i'm definitely not anti-farmer, the work they do is so incredibly important. Just a huge shame repeated negligence is allowed to go largely unanswered for
George, would you mind if I passed this onto a friend who is an editor of a national daily tabloid? I won't tell you which one but if you remember the Boris Johnson swimbait(?) edition and my comment suggesting a Liz Truss plug, in view of her £243m cuts to pollution monitoring et al you can guess it's not a tory one. Third offence is an incarceration, surely, as lessons have not been learned nor remedial measures taken? Tight lines, my man...
This happens on a regular basis where I live we have reported it on a number of times but no body does anything the farmer pumps pig slurry directly into stream and kilks everything everytime very sad boils my piss
The amount of money the government give to the waterways board and environment agency it’s no wonder atrocities like this happen all over the country. Our waterways are so important to all wildlife but seem to be ignored.
I honestly cant say im surprised. Im not sure if its the EA that didnt press hard enough for a bigger fine or if was the judge who let him off with the slap on the wrist but Im not surprised at all at the result. Theres no justice in the UK.
Unbelievable, that farmer will be looking for sympathy because of losing grants His peers should strip him of affiliated membership, the NFU needs to be involved together with anyone buying produce. Sad this.
Just as i was feeling sympathetic towards the farmers outrage re the newly imposed inheritance taxe rules this outrageous display of contempt for the environment has altered my perspective!
This just kills your soul as a fisherman and thinking about the environment.

Hey I just recently bought the rigged and ready predator rod with the 6000 reel I was wondering if you could catch carp on it/will it hold carp?
Makes me sick seems like it's only fisherman that actually care about our river systems. The farmer should be fined for the clean up and restocking it looked a nightmare mate.
Hello mate what was the landing net you was using?
Super video👌
This farmer obviously doesn't care because he is allowed to keep getting away with it. Time he was sent to prison for it.
Sorry but a fine is mot good enough. My blood is boiling . Absolute piss take he should b in prison he obviously new what he was doin .
😂😂😂😂
prison . dont make me laugh
comical go to your safe space fake
This farmer should be in prison! 😡
The same sort of thing happened at Bardney Lock on the Witham a few years ago. The farmer sprayed pesticides into the canal and killed about 1000 fish. I fished it before which was amazing, and after, not knowing what had happened, and blanked. The lock keeper came out and told us what went on.
Annual profit from muck spreading without carrying out the proper checks = £10,000
Annual fines paid for muck spreading without carrying out the proper checks = £0
Since new legislation was brought in to protect canals and other waterways from pollution from farms improperly fertilizing in 2018, exactly no proceedings have been brought, and no fines have been issued.
They have always been protected and looked after by the politicians who also are land owners.
I'm definitely not anti-farmer, the work they do is so incredibly important. Situations like this just shouldn't be allowed to happen though!
The EA have no teeth George I’m afraid 🎣🎣🎣🎣
was the full canal affected or just a small area ?
What else would you expect. Rich landowners with connections in high places get away with it all the time and now they want to dodge the 20% inheritance tax.
The fish are still there pal I had numerous doubles from that stretch last year on deadbait my pal also had his pb of 16lb down there so they are still there I might have a shorts video of a lure caught one I had down there aswell on my channel 👍
Please post a link?
@alison8526 it's my latest two shorts one with my daughter holding a fish and the other of me hooking the fish close in they are not doubles the bigger fish I have pictures of were caught on deadbaits the two in the shorts are lure caught biggest being about 9lb
Marina should sue farmer for ruining water.
I wouldn't want to sit on my boat with stink and dead fish..
So sad to see all those dead fish ,shame on you Mr Farmer .
A huge shame isn't it
Did you name the canal, and the precise stretch ?
Such details can inform authorities and anglers to preserve such waterways.
I agree.
Surly he cant be allowed to be a farmer after numerus environmental violation. A government agench should close his facility down as the fatmer clearly have no respect either for nature or otherfarmes who will get a backlash from this. Good on ya George useing the platform.
It's definitely time this kind of issue is taken more seriously!
Heartbreaking 💔
Where did this happen
Sadly some farmers behave like this !!
That Farmer should have faced huge reparations to fix the place. Reminds me of the recent stretch in Walsall that got impacted by corporate chemical spills. Doesn't seem like anyone will be held to a serious account there either.
I knew Boris had to be good for something 😂
This is tragic, so sad to see. If it was bats there’d be uproar!
Heartbreaking isn't it!
Or newts
There is fish near the marina. I've caught a few little perch lately, but it's not as good as before the disaster.
Ahh thats gutting to hear :( Happy that there's a new pond at least!
Very sad, happened at Sandon lock in the 70s we were gutted.
So where did money from the fine go? Surely towards reinvesting the fish in the canal?
Hadir pendatang baru kawan mantap spotnya mancing sukses slalu buat kita semua 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
So sad 😔
Where is the canal? Who is the farmer? Surely this is all in the public domain. This information could help others to be vigilant and hopefully ensure that either it doesn’t happen again or the perpetrator gets dealt with effectively and appropriately.
If the recent budget has taught us anything, some (most) farmers think they're 'special' and shouldn't be governed by the same laws as everyone else.
The mass of plants can double in size every two or three days meaning it can spread quickly and The plants are eaten by aquatic animals and fish and , washed down through the system during heavy rain or die off during winter conditions... so that might be one problem the weed...that caused it.. and starving the fish of oxergen... good video and yes as every said it sad and i agree all fishemen should take there stuff home after i been fishing i always spend and extra 30 seconds just looking around my fishing area to see i dropped anyting anything..its
Disgusting. Farm should be closed down if he doesn't make reparations.
which canal was it ?
Lancaster....
It defo does, we watch him like a hawk now, our river bounced back and is producing some fine fish but we are vigilant and patrol quite regularly, if your ever over here ill take you for a day on it,
Looking at the amount of algae growth and surface weed, my guess is the problem is ongoing.
what does the EPAs do at the EA if they dont enforce the law
idiots that do this to our water ways obviously care more about money and profits than they do the environment , poor sad sacks they are.
lancaster canal,,, Garstang marina... you can goole earth the rest, im sure
I imagine this is coming out because the farmers are protesting. If not this is really bad timing.
So what did the pike weigh???🤷♂️
Hope these crazy environmentalists don't get hold of his address 😳😳😳
From maybe the BBC report/ google earth/fb something like that?
What is the address that you don't want them getting hold of?
This happens on a regular basis where I live we have reported it on a number of times but no body does anything the farmer pumps pig slurry directly into stream and kilks everything everytime very sad boils my piss
The amount of money the government give to the waterways board and environment agency it’s no wonder atrocities like this happen all over the country. Our waterways are so important to all wildlife but seem to be ignored.
Can’t even watch this 😩
The farmer is most probably related to the local MP so in essence is bullet proof.
As both a farm labourer and an angler I'm sickened by this; behaviour like that does nothing to help the already battered image of farming.
Most of us support our farmers - custodians of the countryside! Just this one needs re-educating a little...
@@alison8526 3 times a day .
Sad this.
Heartbreaking isn't it, it's time things like this were taken more seriously!
Is there any actual proof it came from a farm ????
When they do get done it's only usually a very small fine, it's a disgrace.
It definitely seems like that is what's happened here!
Just as i was feeling sympathetic towards the farmers outrage re the newly imposed inheritance taxe rules this outrageous display of contempt for the environment has altered my perspective!
