This video really sums up how I feel in regards to Dragon Ball as a whole because I’m really sick and tired of the terrible writing terrible power scaling, and overall the The character development regression backwards it’s really insulting to someone who’s been a fan for the longest time
Do we even know why they brought it back in 2013 with the movies? 🤔🤔 It seemed so random for a series that before then I hadn’t thought much about for close to a decade, and even today haven’t thought about much (besides through YT videos and What Ifs and a few years ago on fanfic sites) to suddenly make a return and in such a crazy fashion.
@@guitarbass22 It was largely because of the live action DB film, DB evolution (not GT. GT was actually liked by most of the fanbase, not the jesters who think GT killed DB even though these ignorant fuckers didn't realize the series was beginning to wane after Z's buu saga). Unlike those that claimed GT "killed" the series, there is substantial proof that DB evolution was so bad that toriyama hated it himself, unlike GT which he actually praised as a side story
@@lapplandkun9273Then they should of just made DB Battle of Gods and leave it there. Or just make the sequel, Resurrection F and leave it there. But they decided to make 131 episodes of rubbish. With people just remembering Goku vs Jiren
@@lapplandkun9273few people even watched DB Evolution, or even know it existed. A film hardly anyone watched would not of harmed Dragon Ball's name. Just a few thousand tickets sold. Most movie theaters didnt even host the film because it wasnt selling
The merchandising point is spot on. It is so obvious that transformations are introduced to sell more toys, posters, stickers, etc. rather than highlighting character development. It is sometimes difficult to tell if Toei is actually trolling the fans with the transformations - Piccolo literally wishes for a transformation.
@@AutumnPlainsthe only bad transformation was SS3. SS2 made complete sense. Looked like a realistic progression. Same goes for SS Grade 3 used by trunks and cell. They made sense. Cell’s transformations also made sense. The worst transformations in dragon ball are SS3 and Frieza form 3. Both were very stupid and pointless. Goku didn’t need to beat buu, Vegeta and goku should have swallowed their pride and worked together to beat him after becoming de-fused. Buu also had some unnecessary transformations honestly.
out of all BS transformations in db piccolos is justified. Shenron exists because of kami's power and kami is piccolo. Its only fair he gets something related to shenron when he is the source of the dragon hence the orange form.
From DBS failing & Boruto failing I’ve come to the conclusion a writer should never have anyone else write their stories for them lol even if they’re “supervising”
At least Boruto has begun to partially redeem itself a little with Two Blue Vortex aka Part II of the manga. Can't say the same thing about DBS because Toyotaro is incapable of good quality drawing and storytelling worth a shit.
@Kirby5413 The boruto manga is solid imo. Going to monthly releases absolutely destroys the weekly animation tho lmao. I just have to treat it like a seasonal thing. Give them time to get back to canon material
@@UnwantedGhost1-anz25 more time and budget than what they spent on the current version? I doubt it when they could even just recycle some tournament of power scenes 😂
People actually think Cabba is a good character and that he earned super Saiyan after being bullied at an elementary school level for 9 minutes. Gohan was kidnapped, beaten, insulted, had both his dad's die, and even STILL wasn't a super Saiyan until he was a teen. Cabba is a Soylent Saiyan with no muscle and no willpower. Then people EVEN TRY TO JUSTIFY THE TINGLY BACK. DBS isn't just garbage, it is malignant rectal cancer.
As a long term fan of dragonball, one of the things that hurt the most about super was the change in animation. Without the expressive hand drawn, sharper edged style it just lacked any sense of progression or connection to dragonball z. I loved all the little subtle details with hand drawn. The sense of speed and power was not present in super and things like vegetas outfit reverting to his saiyan cell saga outfit were just jarring and came across as lazy. Transformations meant something and there was always an inspiring message that would motivate you behind all the action. To say super went overboard with the transformations is an understatement. Where do the characters go from ultra instinct levels of power? Whats the point? So many things you mentioned in this video are spot on and glaring i dont know how people in charge of writing could fumble so bad, clearly it was written as a fresh slate and could have been done so much better had the writers actually cared instead of trying to reach quota's.
I agree fully about the animation, I was so accustomed to the style that the Z anime used for a long time and especially how well drawn, for the most part, the buu saga style was made. Seeing the CGI from the battle of gods movie was difficult to watch at first and even though I’ve come around a little bit I still think that the anime drawn in the older style would’ve made a bigger difference in how Super was received.
I feel the exact same way. I'm thirty-six years old, I've been an avid fan since I was about twelve. The writing has consistently been very weak, characters digress from previous growth and otherwise often act out of character; others characters see no development at all. Power scaling is important, as well; consistency within the story helps keep the spell alive, and the power scaling is abysmal in Super. I'd rank 95% of DB/DBZ as fantastically written, whereas I'd rank 95% of Super as terribly written. I'm still a Dragonball fan, but I virtually never think of Super.
@@mitchellbrock2944 I appreciate it, but looking back at this, I don't think I was going for either regress or digress hahahaha. Not sure what I was going for there, to be honest.
Mike, your videos about og DB and DBZ over the last year has reignited my excitment for this franchise in a way Super never could, and reminded me why I loved DB/DBZ in the first place. At a time I was almost going to wash my hands of this franchise. I might've started with Z in the early 2000's on Toonami, but I've read the manga a ton of times and watched the anime a few times too (though not as much as reading the manga because it's hard to find a decent version due to the lackluster "remasters" and rereleases). I was as excited as any DB fan when Toriyama announced a comeback. But BoG, RoF, and Super has done nothing but disappoint, time and time again. Wacthing the Japanese dub as it was first airing, the fan theories of what was going on were way better than what we ended up getting. While I watched the vast majority of the Japanese anime.... I couldn't even finish it (didn't watch the last 2-4 episodes, and I'm surpriseed I managed to last that long). I certainly didn't have any interest in watching it again in English, nor could I bare to read the manga. Especially with Toyotaro's bad writing and art style not appealing to me (I've seen fan art more 'on model' and better quality). I've been waiting for Super to die the painful death it deserves. I'd put it in the same category of Super Dragon Ball Heroes.... it's not worth my time and should be ignored.
Once people accept that the franchise is just a cash cow for Toriyama, Toei, and Shueisha I think a lot of the hate would subside. They don't care about story. Only money. 💵💵💵 So just enjoy it for what is or don’t.
People take the series way too seriously. It’s entertaining, and I’ve loved it since I was a kid, but I would never get this charged over the parts I don’t like.
Or it’s just toriyama making what he wants to make and y’all just cry too much Edit: most of super that we see anyway ain’t even toriyama my comment was mainly about daima and the hate that gets
GT should never have happened. You could have slapped that epiloque with the farewell theme at the end of Z and it'd literally be the same ending with the same emotional appeal (literally rewatch the scene, basically no GT characters are ever shown in the end scenes, because they literally didnt matter lol). It's hilarious to me that anyone thinks GT is good out of what is basically Super fatigue. Just because you hate one sequel doesn't mean you go rush to the other one, just hate them both for trashing what was the obviously better series: Z
@manipulatortrash some people (like me) actually enjoyed GT before Super was a thing Sure, lots of people have rushed to GT due to Super not being all it was made out to be but that doesn't mean everyone is like that About the ending if you just mean the montage then sure but that's being pretty harsh since that's ignoring the entire episode imo.
@@nora-yc6fi "some people (like me) actually enjoyed GT before Super was a thing ure, lots of people have rushed to GT due to Super not being all it was made out to be but that doesn't mean everyone is like that" never said this wasn't the case for some people, but you'd be very disingenuous to say super fatigue doesn't factor into a lot of the sentiment nowadays. It's always, "Hur dur, unlike super goku, gt goku was way more mature and heroic." Ignoring of course that goku was *never* a heroic character nor was he ever utilized well outside of just killing off villains. "About the ending if you just mean the montage then sure but that's being pretty harsh since that's ignoring the entire episode imo." I'm not actually being harsh, im being far more generous by even accepting its a good ending for gt. If i was a mindless gt hater i'd just flatout say the ending was bad too (it isnt, its one i rewatch a lot). I've watched it pretty recently and i'll say this: Most of the pacing and storytelling was utter garbage. If GT was just the baby saga, i'd rate it very high, but unfortunately its weighted down by the first arc, the super 17 arc, and the shadow dragons arc. Wtf is up with the climactic arc being mostly a monster of the week format with boring dragons? I am *not* surprised so many fans had dropped gt due to just how terrible their pacing was in even the first arc alone. Why is pan even in the shadow dragons arc? She actively destroys an easy path for victory for goku almost every time. It's honestly infuriating seeing what they did with pan. The fact pan in the likes of DBS: Super Hero alone has more meaning and character is extremely disappointing to me. GT had so much potential and it blew it. It had the Z aesthetic and artstyle (sky a bit dark but meh) and it had the OST. Back to the ending: None of the heart tugging moments of the episode is due to GT, it's all because of Z. There are zero heartfelt moments with their GT characters, it's indicative of just how poorly they handled utilizing anyone besides Goku the entire series. Uub? Pan? Any newly introduced GT characters? Nah. Let's just make goku talk with krillin/roshi and piccolo and call it good. Every single flashback and relationship that they touch on was from Z or OG DB, none of that emotional climax is due to GT, but rather Z. I'm pretty sure you know this by now, but the directors and writers of GT already had the ending in mind before even writing the series. I think that's all thats needed to be said. They never intended on GT having meaningful character interactions due to how they structured the story of GT, it was always intended to just be nostalgia-driven, and it failed even there. As flawed and stupid super is, they don't suffer from this in their anime ending nor in the climaxes of their later manga arcs. Their movies are also similarly willing to forge an identity for themselves. Any of the sense of victory and "ah, its over" is solely due to super's own writing, not nostalgia from solely Z-built relationships. Again, still don't think either gt or super should have happened. Z was perfectly fine as is. Kai was even better. Any db fan taking the overall experience and writing quality into account should only really be talking Z or Kai. Every other part of the dragon ball franchise is lacking in some department that may leave a bitter taste in one's mouth.
@@manipulatortrash Not even close you can''t slap that ending on anything. Shenron only Left because of the over-use of the Dragon Balls which is only a GT concept. Furthermore the appearance of Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. is a GT concept. So no, not even close. Plenty of other stuff that was needed for GT.
I totally get where you're coming from. I took issue with a lot of things about Battle of Gods from the get-go, and it being the basis for the new series wasn't going to change those fundamental peeves I had with it. But when I finally got around to watching the show when it was all finished, I saw a lot of enjoyable moments in it too. It is heavily flawed, but that's okay. I think people just need to go in with the expectation that it's not gonna be perfect, and will NEVER recapture or surpass the original run, because that was lightning in a bottle, a product of its time, and there's never a way to go back. Dragon Ball is old news and past its peak relevance, not a groundbreaking pioneer anymore but a relic of a different simpler time. Same thing happened with Star Wars and Halo, just poor imitations trying their best. With even the original creators not being the same people they were when they made those masterpieces. George Lucas's prequels were a flop and likewise clashed with the source continuity, but it also opened up interesting new possibilities for that world (and taking it away from George Lucas resulted in even worse results). And Bungie makes vapid soulless live service scams now. Toyotarou is basically 343 Industries. So, Dragon Ball's new management won't live up to its legacy (a hard act to for anyone to follow, Akira Toriyama included! As early as the Buu arc -- and some even say the Cell arc -- as case in point), but it's not complete irredeemable garbage either. They tried. It could have been a lot worse. It's not Dragon Ball Evolution. It's just good to see Dragon Ball characters back and vibing with each other again, even if it's not quite the same. On that note, I honestly would've preferred if the series actually stayed true to the peaceful days interim leading up to Uub by being a slice of life show, because the character moments are still great, while the attempt to do DBZ-like sagas was never gonna work out just by the logistical pacing realities of the amount of episodes they have to work with. It's even worse with the manga, going so blitzingly fast (yet also dreadfully slow...) that it's impossible for any arc to really sink in and make a reader impact. The Zamasu arc was their attempt to recreate a Z-style big all-powerful villain arc, and it ended up being the worst part of Super (with many who say Moroh and Granolah's arcs were even worse!), so perhaps Super should move on from Z-type stories and just do something distinctly its own and uniquely suited for the current moment. Which is what is great about Daima, it is an opportunity for the franchise to shift direction instead of just delivering more of the (flawed) same. As always, I appreciate your thoughtful perspective.
I agree, the problems were apparent with Battle of Gods, and it got much worse later on. They decided to change the formula from mortals fighting god-like beings, to gods fighting mortals… and frequently losing. The Super series was exactly that story, and I don’t have to tell you how compelling it wasn’t.
The reason I look at DBS fondly is because it was the chance that I never thought I would get in my life to see actually new episodes of Dragon Ball as they release. And better yet, I got to watch it alongside pretty much everyone else as a fandom. As a community. I miss that still. Even though it has so so many issues, I’m glad DBS happened overall even tho it’s not the Dragon Ball Z that’s long gone. Daima is exciting. I can’t wait.
What I don't get is why people wanted new episodes so badly in the first place. The show ended well and the last time it was resurrected it was mostly a shit show. Why not just let it die and move on to new things? You'll always have the old stuff to rewatch when the mood strikes you.
I agree Mike I think we OG fans are very different from the current generation, ive said similar things myself and been criticized for it by a younger majority who are mostly fans of the Dragon Ball Super anime.
Exactly. I always say Super is a fanfiction show that some call Canon but I never have and always and still see GT as the true ending. Wheras, with this it's just a side thing in between.
I just wanted to see the Moro Arc animated, since that was a pretty fun story in the manga. Aside from some shark jumping at the end of the arc, it was really solid.
Insinuating that people that like DBS aren’t invested in Dragon Ball as much as you is exactly the same thing you’re complaining about then saying about you. “I’m a real fan, you aren’t.”
I hope it does return one day. But I'll definitely survive if it doesn't. I liked the super surprise arcs that had no Manga written so everything was a mystery. But hey we will see what happens
Before sharing my thoughts, I just want to wish you well. You seem very burned out and clearly emotionally invested (I don't mean that in a bad way). I appreciate your enthusiasm and your knowledge that you add. I'll probably check into some of your other channels because I have grown to value your insight. With regards to DBS, I couldn't agree more. Super destroyed all consistency with numerous retcons and @$$-pull after @$s-pull. It had loads of potential if you avoid the fact that it occurs during a time skip. I'm not excited for Daima because I haven't seen anything to show me they will create a compelling story. Heroes and Super were both trash despite potential, and GT had such freshness that was also poorly done in areas.
Sorry but ultra instinct is foreshadowed since even the og db when popo trained kid goku to clear his mind. So Ultra instinct is not REALLY an @sspull.
@@Szukiykenthat was nothing but lucky writing that spurs someone like you to make a theory like that. I can put money on the fact that ultra instinct wasn’t planned in the late 80s man cmon.
@@jongriggs85 it's kinda bizarre that akira remembered the flow state(properties of ultra instinct) since the 80s until now because akira forgets most of his stuff and characters in db.

Wow so glad to hear you out on this video, ive felt the same way you made brilliant points. As a kid I felt dbz lost its way in the buu saga very enjoyable but at a point in the saga it just felt cheap and bad writing. Super has doubled down on what i felt was bad in buu saga and rly turned me off especially some of the newer manga stuff. I also dont like gt so its like am ripping super because I prefer gt.
Like how your only arguement for someone not agreeing with your viewpoint is “well they probably haven’t seen/read this thing I have” people with the same knowledge can have a difference of opinion
Meanwhile I loved Super because it brought back a lot of the comedic and slice of life character moments that Z is sorely missing and the original Dragonball (my favourite) has in spades.
Super is definitely better consumed as a highlight reel rather than actually sitting and watching in its entirety. I assume for those of us that tuned in each week get it. 131 episodes w/ like maybe 10-12 of those actually being impactful. They really could’ve wrapped this whole thing up in like 50 episodes.
I appreciate you Mike. I'm glad I found your channel. Your opinions have carried my sentiments being a long time fan, and not dismissing of the new material just because it's a little different. Keep up the good work!!!
Tbh you've stated what I stated after a singular watch of the show. I loved Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z (Yes I enjoyed GT) but Super felt off completely. Battle of Gods I didn't mind at all, bringing back Frieza... Yeh I hated it because it's already been done and doing something after it's been done imo can be lazy writing especially if it's over done (Frieza being brought back twice and in Super Manga alone comes back in a new powerful form so original). Didn't really care for Super all together especially the devolution of Vegeta and Goku, Vegeta finally had a monumental development with the Majin Buu arc that didn't focus all around Goku but his family then in Super he kinda acts the same way he did before then Goku's intellect and his injuries from the stupidest stuff (The bullet and the laser) didn't make sense. Super had way too many plotholes, repeated plot devices, badly executed ideas, and this isn't even really me mentioning the anime just the Manga. I use to love the Franchise and after Dragon Ball Super I completely gave up on it, the closest I get to the series is Xenoverse 2 at this point. I'm sorry for anyone who enjoyed the series but I just couldn't ignore all the flaws and even with Dragon Ball Z's plot holes at times at least they weren't all over the place like Super's
Honestly you do a great job and I'm glad we have people like you to state their opinion or sometimes truth on things. It's inspirational and that's why I said this message
DBS had some nice concepts and moments like ultra instinct, goku vs Jiren, universe 7 God of destruction owning all the other GoD's of other universes (I forgot the his name since I haven't touched DB as a whole since DBS),Vegeta's drive to become a god of destruction, broly etc... Other than these there is nothing else in there as a whole.I watched entire DBS and I felt nothing towards it,nothing but whatever, meh thank God it's over.DBS was disappointing but DBS manga was even more so,oof.
I never cared for DBS. I honestly thought SS Blue was bad fan art the first time i saw it. They say dont judge a book by its cover, but the pink/gray/purple hair looks silly. They don’t need to change hair color everytime they get a power up. I'm simply looking forward to Daima because it’s not DBS and it looks like they're taking a different approach. I think too many people are focused on fitting more into the canon story, but i say leave it alone. I'd be fine with seeing more from Dragon Ball without it tying into the original story.
The big problem is if Daima flops then what a decade of nothing but fan services? Its more dangerous than it appears because I think it will be a complete waste of animation and resources if daima is the character guide i think it will be but who knows, but if it flops then this is an epic fail one of the biggest ever in anime history but so many are ready to gamble that because lets be honest most fans didnt grow up w dbz
Did anyone else go to the gym right after watching an episode of Dragonball Super? I got pumped when Vegeta blew up the Room of Spirit and Time. (Hyperbolic Time Chamber)
I'm with you bro! Not only did I grow up with Dragon Ball in 96, but honestly, I don't care about Supers return either. I had fun seeing characters revisited and the slice of life moments! But with these new transformations being simple color swaps, 5 years of no Uub connection outside a panel ( or two) and some of Toyataros villain designs not peaking any interest like Toriyamas designs....Ive been taken back from what Dragon Ball was.
I know DBS has its fans but I definitely think the reaction to the series overall has been very mixed. That’s why I don’t understand a lot of the complaints about Daima being prioritized; a lot of people seemed to be very ambivalent toward Super, so does it even matter if it comes back? On top of that, the manga is still going on and it’s very easy to find and read, so there’s already more Super out there for people who want it. I assume people want to see anime adaptations of the Moro and Granolah arcs, but the manga and anime continuities aren’t even the same, so who knows what Toei would do with their adaptations? Overall I think Super has ultimately done a disservice to most of the main characters. I think Vegeta is the only character they’ve consistently handled fairly well. Piccolo and Gohan have been a mixed bag, and Goku has been done dirty.
@@cosmictrainer2919idk, I understand people saying that Vegeta wanting to surpass Goku kind of negates/retcons his speech at the end of Z, but.. if Vegeta wasn’t training what would he even be doing? His relationship with Goku seems to be much more healthy than it was in Z. It comes off as more of a friendly rivalry that they use to make each other better than a one-sided obsession with beating someone (which was Vegeta in Z). Vegeta is also motivated to be the strongest in general, even without Goku. We see this at the start of the Buu saga. At the end of the Cell saga he says he’ll never fight again because Goku is gone, but in the Buu saga he has surpassed Gohan, in spite of not knowing Goku would ever come back to life.
@@brandonreed3670 "if Vegeta wasn’t training what would he even be doing?" This assume/imples that Vegeta wouldn't train if he wasn't chasing Goku's power. Which is BS since he was still training after Cell in the 7 year gap, despite vowing never to fight again, called himself a liability (he wasn't wrong), and didn't care about beat Goku at this point. Reverting Vegeta back to having a hard-on for Goku yet again is ridiculous, especially since they did that in every. single. arc. of DBZ, despite him accepting Goku as the strongest on Namek just before he died. Which means his arc was complete then and he should've stayed dead. Just like Goku should've stayed dead after the Android saga.
@@brandonreed3670 He doesn't say he'll never fight again because Goku is gone. That statement also implies losing Goku means he lost his will to train / fight. Neither are true. He lost his will because he was a liability and was the cause of all the problems. He dropped his ego and admitted he was the problem. Yet he kept training because that's the only life he knew. Doesn't mean he was training to become the strongest, or to surpass Goku, or Gohan. He was just training because. Just because.
Haven't read Maro or Granola arcs. (Canon discrepancies between show and manga is jarring AF) But I feel you. Throughout DBS's original run I made tons of excuses for the show hoping they'd deliver on everything they hyped up. Being passionate about something can be draining and I couldn't imagine covering the franchise as a full time job. That being said, have you thought about covering other series? I'd love to see your takes on more mature material like berserk or Satoshi kon's filmography.
@@deonterectorrebooted? How about abandoned it completely? There's nothing to ever be salvage from those arcs. Those arc killed my interest of dragon ball and even laughing stock don't bother wasting his time with that trash.
@@haroldnecmann7040 I agree with forgetting those 2 arcs all together since the Moro arc makes the Boo arc worse and Goku Black even more garbage. It's funny that Uub is basically the one that defeated Moro with what's left of Dai Kaioshin God Ki but Dai Kaioshin in the past with all his God ki struggle to defeat a weaker moro.
The Freeza Arc wasn't that great either, that's just nostalgia goggles talking. Iconic yes, but a poorly written mess just like Cell and Boo. For my money Dragon Ball peaked with the Saiyan Arc.
As someone who watches lots of films and shows, you have a better perspective on this kind of stuff than the average fan. But even as someone who doesn’t watch lots of shows, it’s quite easy to tell that Super is complete garbage. Episode 5 gave away how much effort they put into the series, so that was actually good setting of the tone.

But keep doing what you're doing man. I'll still support you. Also more interested in Daima coming back? It's a brand new series it's never been back lol
People do tie things they like/do to their ego and get super defensive. I liked the video and congrats for standing by your feelings on the matter. This is YOUR channel, the idea that people tell you how to run it/who you are is wild. I liked parts of super, but your critiques are super valid and i was like "yknow hes not wrong" throughout. Keep on keepin on
The issue is that people seem to think Z and Super are just so different. Despite them being very similar. All the issues people claim Super has, Z also has. Do not get me wrong, Super has issues. People just don’t talk about them in the right way. All these people hating on Super and Daima watched Z as a kid, but then they grew up. So when they watched Super, they didn’t like it. But their nostalgia goggles keep them from realizing that they actually don’t like Dragon Ball.
Naw this ain't it DBZ had real flaws but Super has those flaws but those flaws cranked up on 100 that it would cause cancelation for the series in the 90's. Why is Super messing up so badly when the arcs are shorter than DBZ arcs and it's not like Super has a complex premise like death note so it has no reason to mess up on damn near every level especially when it comes out monthly.
Same here,I watched the anime up until the end of the Tournament of Power and watched the Broly movie, but never cared to watch Super Hero or continue the Manga. Dont really like to consider it cannon tbh… even though it is.. idk
You know what the people behind Super should have done create a managa anthology series based on all the universe besides 7 and based who story is most successful they'll appear in the anime. I feel like they never justified why there had to be 12 universes.
💯, DBS should have been about actually exploring the multiverse. only things i would keep the same is B.o.G., Goku Black (different ending), T.O.P., Broly, Moro, Granolah, and Super Hero. literally everything else can get Hakai'd.
Thank you! Everyone is so terrified to talk about how horrible Super is (Because the community will attack them). Legit the only type of people that can enjoy it are people who don't care about ANYTHING making sense, they just want to see Goku punch stuff. It's crazy to me that it's not just little kids that like Super. I had a friend in his mid 30s that thought Super was the best anime ever made. I just don't get it. As a lifetime Dragon Ball fan, it absolutely ruined the characters for me and I just like to pretend it's non-canon.
Hey man, I really feel what you are saying. I don’t understand why Super gets the accolades it does. I don’t understand how it gets all these passes when GT (which isn’t great) gets dunked on. GT as a whole feels a lot more of a sequel to DBZ than Super. It fits better. GT had stakes, whereas Super really doesn’t. Super absolutely ruined the Future Trunks character…something GT never did because it wasn’t foolish enough to bring back. I’m not trying to sound salty. Super has some neat ideas to be sure. But so did GT, and yet it gets railed on when Super gets all of this praise.
I'm glad you spoke from your heart. I'm literally crying because I feel the same way about Dragon Ball Super, down to almost every single word, and I never thought someone would articulate in such detail the same sentiments I have. Keep being you, and I'm glad you plugged your other stuff. I've only recently discovered you.
@@webbiefade14 they weren't just random things happening, i've seen the entire series and i can be more than certain it had a storyline behind it like heart becoming a good guy after he loses against gogeta blue and jiren, even the original broly had way more respect and screen time unlike the newer one which was woke as hell, plus on top of that it had the real cell which stuper couldn't even manage to bring back.
I honestly think Super did more harm than good to the reputation of the characters. As infamous as GT was, it at the very least kept some characters off screen rather than having them show up only to have their development ruined (tien, Piccolo, Gohan, Bardock, Future Trunks etc.) I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets the GT treatment when it ends. Much like Boruto, It feels more like DLC than an actual continuation of the story.

If the backend Super Arcs get adapted and it's not a slog and some how done better I'd be fine. If Dragon Ball Daima some how is a lot better than the preconceptions surrounded, that's also fine. At this point, just want to see good stories from the franchise that actually feels like there's some heart and passion, that actually elevates the characters and stakes beyond the new next shiny form of the week.
I’m glad more people are saying that dragon ball super sucks. It clearly doesn’t live up to dragon ball or Dbz, but it’s little kids who say it’s good because this was this their introduction to Dragonball, but they will never know what it was like watching the original db and Dbz
I agree with a lot of the problems with DragonBall Super Mike I also don't like how Goku and Vegeta regress and get too much spotlight in the series and I don't like how Future Trunks's Timeline got ruined. I think the power scaling is crazy tbh, I don't like any version of Broly at this point and well Broly I never liked in general because of his anger issues, The tingly back feeling of Caulifla's I despise and well again I mostly agree with a lot of things you said in this video.
Z broly js actually good tho, Z future trunks is not much better than super, and cauliflas back thing is cringe but they're from different universes, hate the back thing if u want but damn near everyone being relative to god ki goku PLUS god stacked is the dumbest writing ever, goku shoulda been beerus type of scaling gap with everyone , toppo ig hes born with this, how does jiren training supprass a God , how does vegeta get god ki without the ritual, and everyone else how do they catch up to gokus strength
Having a series during a time skip really messed things up. DBS should've happened between Z and GT if GT was it's own spinoff series. Having said that, time to involve warriors from other universes to fight Black Frieza...
I want to see the anime versions of the rest of the DBS manga but I also want to see this new Dragonball story I want to see my favorite cartoon characters on more adventures even if I don't find it as good as DBZ I have hope that they will eventually do something great with the characters I grew up with and while I don't like a lot of what they did with super I enjoyed some of the new characters but having the story take place during a time skip was very stupid
I actually really like DBS but I can also agree on the major flaws you point out or have always pointed out about it. I love your channel because you keep it informative and real. With that said, I'm in no way excited for this new DragonBall series. It looks like it's marketed to children. Like you, I've grown up with the DragonBall franchise. Something more geared towards an older crowd would be more appealing to me. I think that is why I like Super. It felt like a more organic continuation of Z even with all the glaring plot holes and narrative issues. It was fun, but not overly too childish. Just my thoughts.
Spot on. You said pretty much everything I always thought of as being issues with DBS. And of course I understand that people can like what they like, but when it comes to DBS, I just can’t even understand why people like it, because it feels like a bastardized copy of Dragon Ball Z. It’s got no tension. It’s characters are extremely simplified and reductive, compared to their original counterparts. It’s arcs are drawn out, messily written and boring. It’s villains are often not true villains anyway, and are mostly devoid of any interesting character. The manga artwork (sorry, Toyotaro) is stiff, flat, non dynamic and boring. I could go on for a long time on what aspects of DBS make me cringe… but it’s all been said in this video. I hope that the franchise moves in a direction that is far more interesting, with Daima. Something with the poetic whimsy of Dragon Ball. Something with the tension and subtle complexity of Dragon Ball Z. Something new, and something interesting. I don’t want Dragon Ball to continue being something that is primarily used to make profits by being an outlet for merchandising and marketing. I want it to have HEART and SOUL, something that MOVES me like the original run often did. I want Dragon Ball to be the magical adventure I know that it can be.
freeza being brought back for ToP and becoming a sortof ally was legit i predicted freezas "win" back in top with the anime only scene mixing energies. im okay with tsundere not full villain freeza
You know what LSM? you are %1000 right I don't even like dbs ( not including the new Broly movie and Kefla ) I am not apart of the we I like what I like plain and simple and ssj4 is the best form in the franchise in my opinion
Super is just short for "Superficial" DBS wishes it could stand with likes of Z and GT, but it is shallow as a puddle, pretending it's a lake. Mike, absolutely no vitriol from me. You've earned my respect, and I think you have earned your place with your opinion on the series. Thank you for all you've contributed, and I eagerly await what more you have to offer :)
my feelings for Dragon Ball Super are pretty much the same as yours when they first announced it i was really excited to find Dragon Ball back but i found it disappointing although i did enjoy parts of it and really enjoyed some characters like Goku Black
Thank you, the amount of people saying "we want dragon ball super to come back", or the worst one ive seen " akira toriyama doesn't care what the fans want", these type of fans really irritate me to no end. one of the main reasons im excited for daima because it seems like its a return to the og dragon ball having actual martial arts and the feel of adventure ECT. I honestly couldn't care less for super if I tried.
So why does it bother you people want Super to come back? They are allowed to want their own things, I'm excited for Daima nut would also love Super to return
@@MysteryBounty If I may.... the problem isn't that people want the Super anime to come back... the point is those people are claiming the entire fandom ("we") wants that and Toei are dumb for not "listening to the fans". Even though a significant portion of the fandom hates Super.
@EndoScorpion I'll give you that, I'm not even the biggest fan of Super, it had some parts I liked but overall it regressed characters like Goku, ruined Future Trunks and its story was meh overall, but I would still love if it came back to cover the manga arcs because in my opinion those 2 arcs were great and I would love to see them! I also am looking forward to Daima, why does it have to be just 1 give us bkth!
In many ways I think the peak of all of the dragonball franchise is the Saiyan saga, particularly Goku Vs Vegeta. They never put as much into the animation after that point. Pretty quickly after that people stopped having hair that moved lol
As someone who has been waiting for the manga to be adapted and was tremendously disappointed in the diama or whatever announcement why should I be excited for this?
I didn't want a continuation of the Super anime. But I definitely didn't want another prequel storyline. Daima will be nice. But the more nuanced everything becomes post-Buu/pre-end of Z, the more I feel like the sanctity of what we got in Z becomes a little blurred and rubbed. Dragonball Super pushed me far from expecting something great, so it's hard to put trust in another new series.
Honestly though i enjoyed super, I still agree with the fact that dragon ball fell off after the cell saga and never really reached the same heights it reached. Even as a fan of super, i can admit that the way characters like Goku, Vegeta and Gohan were handled terribly and ressurection f is probably my least favourite thing in all of dragon ball and is worse than the worst parts of gt (which i enjoyed as much as i enjoyed suoer tbh). However, i still enjoy some aspects of super like the moro and granola arc and most of the tournament but i can see why people didnt like them. As for super returning i still want it to happen mainly so super just has an ending and plus im intrigued by black frieza but i can understand why some dont care for it returning.
I agree with you man. I love Super to, but even I know the series isn't perfect. I still find it funny though that people act like Super is over, yet the manga is still ongoing and we have movies still coming out too. So I feel it's kinda silly to fully judge Super as a whole until the series is officially over.
Man regardless of how I feel about Dragon Ball these days I would never insult someone for being a fan or not being a fan of aspects or the direction something we all love in our own way is going. I also genuinely enjoy your takes.
Sorry just saw this LSM but preach man I 100% feel you and I love when you go back to the original series and go in depth about the real answers and really make sense of the series man I love what you put out and I think you are right keep doing what you’re doing because you aren’t afraid to let people know your opinion which doesn’t make you hater keep up the amazing work bro
Moro arc was great I would love to hear the voices and see what they do a little different, but I wouldnt mind if they skip it and go over black Frieza.

Tbh the dragonball content that needs to be animated is the fan mangas. Examples: Dragonball Multiverse, Kakumei, New Hope, AF. All of these are written better than super with two taking place during or after DBZ, one after GT and Kakumei after the super anime.
Dragon ball super anime was so poorly animated it was insulting like how df is every fight from DBZ 20 yrs older then super so much better animated the writing was horrible, multiple tournament arcs??? Really? Just corny af they wait till the very end of the season to animate goku vs jiren properly which by that point was far too late and let’s not talk about everybody being out of character. Goku’s literally retarded in super, vegeta is a soft gag character, gohan is an absolute joke and then we got them milking frieza. I personally liked the Moro granola and gas arc I feel like it’s actually more original then season one AND THATS why I want super season 2 to be animated not because I liked season 1 but I have hope for season 2 IF THEY ANIMATE it right not that low budget Walmart shit we got last time
Supers animation gets okay at universe 6 arc then good at the black arc the first two arcs had poor production and was rashed, can you make examples of bad writing there is quite a bit,og dragon ball had 4 tornament arcs and dbz had one two if you count other world, super goku is not as dumb as people think less wise then z but not retarded, you can be the most badass character and you can still have a gag, frieza i dont know why they keep him But its still your opinion of the series

Super is just hollow for me. I enjoyed it, but it truly doesn’t feel like it was made for a purpose other than keeping the Dragon Ball cash cow rolling. GT was essentially the same, but it somehow felt like it progressed the characters much more than Super.
Great video and breakdown as always. While I don't usually agree on some topics mainly because we interpret the info differently I'm with you here. For me when DB Super came out I was happy I wasn't the biggest fan of Battle of Gods or Freiza Resurrected but I enjoyed their stories in the anime adaptations. For me I've never been a die hard DBZ fan going all the way back to the my days watching which yes I remember those days on WB by Ocean. And you're right Dragon Ball Super isn't perfect and does suffer from many issues even beyond the intro to Uub and that even being retconned by the intro of Beerus a character leagues above anyone in GT by all accounts. But getting to the Tournament of Power for me was where I checked out I know what happened and feel yes sadly the biggest issue of Super is our heros Goku here feels more like Dragon Ball Goku and less like Goku from DBZ while I'm as hung on Vegeta as others are wanting to be better than Goku I disliked the changes to the Sayians overall being less of a warrior race and more a race that hated having to bow down to Freiza. While there are good fights for sure the writing is much like the Buu Saga in that it's very hit or miss and while I enjoy the humor for sure I do feel the inconsistency of writing has hurt. Definitely Dragon Ball needs a rest for sure as the main audience hasn't been as big of a fan of the last two manga arcs because the sales are down and Funimation knows it as they have had no interest in dubbing from what I know. At this point the series doesn't need new blood so much as a chance to catch its breath and for new ideas to come forth.
I'll watch Daima it seems fun. But to me DB in general ended in the 90s. The level of creativity was incredible back then. Dragonball super did not do well for me.
You're absolutely right, Mike. What I have to add to the things I hate about DB Super are the INSANELY dumb written dialogues, the absolutely neglectable story and the overly flat character behaviour. I just cant watch DBS, it is THAT SHITTY. keep doing your good work! Greetings from germany
The merchandising point is spot on. It is so obvious that transformations are introduced to sell more toys, posters, stickers, etc. rather than highlighting character development. It is sometimes difficult to tell if Toei is actually trolling the fans with the transformations - Piccolo literally wishes for a transformation.
Piccolo smart for that one. Actually, he just wished for his full potential to be unlocked. Shenron just threw in a bonus for his buddy.
Transformations have always been an ass pull in the series since Android saga.
From DBS failing & Boruto failing I’ve come to the conclusion a writer should never have anyone else write their stories for them lol even if they’re “supervising”
yup
At least Boruto has begun to partially redeem itself a little with Two Blue Vortex aka Part II of the manga. Can't say the same thing about DBS because Toyotaro is incapable of good quality drawing and storytelling worth a shit.
@Kirby5413 The boruto manga is solid imo. Going to monthly releases absolutely destroys the weekly animation tho lmao. I just have to treat it like a seasonal thing. Give them time to get back to canon material

I agree with you entirely but just so you know it’s regress not digress
Watching original Dragonball for the first time. Seeing the king piccolo arc is really interesting even without crazy power feats. Love the content!
Without crazy power feats? so toa pai pai knocking out general blue with just his tongue isn't ridiculous enough for you?

Let's agree to disagree
GT should never have happened. You could have slapped that epiloque with the farewell theme at the end of Z and it'd literally be the same ending with the same emotional appeal (literally rewatch the scene, basically no GT characters are ever shown in the end scenes, because they literally didnt matter lol). It's hilarious to me that anyone thinks GT is good out of what is basically Super fatigue. Just because you hate one sequel doesn't mean you go rush to the other one, just hate them both for trashing what was the obviously better series: Z
@manipulatortrash some people (like me) actually enjoyed GT before Super was a thing
Sure, lots of people have rushed to GT due to Super not being all it was made out to be but that doesn't mean everyone is like that
About the ending if you just mean the montage then sure but that's being pretty harsh since that's ignoring the entire episode imo.

"some people (like me) actually enjoyed GT before Super was a thing ure, lots of people have rushed to GT due to Super not being all it was made out to be but that doesn't mean everyone is like that"
never said this wasn't the case for some people, but you'd be very disingenuous to say super fatigue doesn't factor into a lot of the sentiment nowadays. It's always, "Hur dur, unlike super goku, gt goku was way more mature and heroic." Ignoring of course that goku was *never* a heroic character nor was he ever utilized well outside of just killing off villains.
"About the ending if you just mean the montage then sure but that's being pretty harsh since that's ignoring the entire episode imo."
I'm not actually being harsh, im being far more generous by even accepting its a good ending for gt. If i was a mindless gt hater i'd just flatout say the ending was bad too (it isnt, its one i rewatch a lot). I've watched it pretty recently and i'll say this:
Most of the pacing and storytelling was utter garbage.
Back to the ending:
None of the heart tugging moments of the episode is due to GT, it's all because of Z.

I feel you. I keep watching Super thinking Z is going to pop in but nope. Its really gone.
Meanwhile I loved Super because it brought back a lot of the comedic and slice of life character moments that Z is sorely missing and the original Dragonball (my favourite) has in spades.
There will be nothing close to the Frieza or Cell Saga coming in Super.

Dbz Rof Ssblue Was where it was Introduced and it looked different than Super's Version and had a Different Aura
I definitely agree with you... I mean if super did come back I would watch it but if they don't bring it back I'm not gonna lose any sleep
Vegeta has just regressed
@@brandonreed3670 "if Vegeta wasn’t training what would he even be doing?"
This assume/imples that Vegeta wouldn't train if he wasn't chasing Goku's power.
@@EndoScorpion did you even read my whole comment? I literally said the same that you did in my second paragraph lol

That’s understandable
Hey mike, love your content and just wanted to say you have basically hit the nail on the head with this one.
Great breakdown, as usual, Mike! But the video could have been 3 seconds long - you could have juat diatilled the trut to "Cuz it sucks"!

A fan can criticize a series they love! You don't have to like every aspect of it, it doesn't make you a fake fan or a hater.
Ngl, I haven't enjoyed DBS at all. The power scaling for the humans and androids ruined it for me, among other things.
Same never watched a single episode, been putting it off for years.
Dragonball Super pushed me far from expecting something great, so it's hard to put trust in another new series.
end of Z had the formula for perfect end but that whole goku leaves his family was some horrible writing

Love your content Mike! You always make My day 😊😊😊❤❤❤
I'll watch Daima it seems fun.
