Eido Apparently if you hire him at the place, he won't get in his plane. What's interesting is he has dialogue outside of his plane, albeit sounds like he's talking through is walkie but he functions fine outside of the plane.

They should have made Nick's missions more linear so that I wouldn't accidentally kill John, take over the ranch, and then "steal" back Nick's plane only to find out that nothing makes sense anymore
I know how to hire Nick without his plane. Go to 8 bit plaza and while you have Nick in your sites go and hire him in the menu and he will follow you on the ground.
Dominic Spence What's odd is that he has special dialogue, like entering a car, but he sound alike he's in his plane; and his voice sounds different too. And when you tell Nick to attack someone, it has the attack marker to show that he's gonna strafe or bomb someone...even though he's on the ground.

Yeah, that’s a really bad choice they made in not making this mission main story because of how fucked up that seems.
This is the true ending for me.
Nick's story isn't over, in the Lost in Mars DLC. You play as Nick Rye on Mars trying to save the world from Arachnid Martians.
Maybe a bliss effect from the ending?
