The Big Band’s busy concert season marches on with this performance in late June. An unusual Tuesday evening performance, the band worked with Howard County Recreation & Parks to put on a concert as part of their Travelling Bands series. Using the Chrysalis as the venue for the program was a new and exciting adventure for HCP&R, as it was relatively newly built, and all parties involved enjoyed the chance to exercise Columbia’s newest venue and park!
Arlen & Koehler’s 1933 torch song “Stormy Weather” took the world by storm on its debut by Ethel Waters in 1933. Its success was such that the musical revue of the storied Cotton Club was renamed the “Stormy Weather Revue” for a national tour, and a wartime film of the same name was released in 1943. Many artists have released versions, with Ethel Waters’ 1933 recording entering the Grammy Hall of Fame. As an aside, a 1952 recording by The Five Sharps is recognized as one of the rarest records known to still exist, with only three copies remaining.
