Using sand anchors with your kites

- My 181st kite video. I use sand anchors often with my kites. It is the safest way to fly big kites at the beach, and allows one person to fly multiple kites.
Anyone wanting to check out all my "How to..." videos on various aspects of kite-flying can now find them all easily on my Playlist at / jimskitesnz
Wow. I just received that kite purchased from Emma kites. The exact colour. And your tip for anchoring remind me of the nylon bags we're being forced to carry in our cars for trips to the market. I loaded three of them with sand gathered the handles with a carabiner. Voila
I think you'll like the kite - looks good and flies well. Those bags sound like a good idea for anchors, as long as the handles are strong enough. Have fun!
Thanks for this, I've been trying to find out how the large kites are held down and found your video... it's old but very relevant, even today!
You can say that again!! Greetings from Nigeria!
Bravavie Kite Festival I enjoyed your video of the festival - maybe you can do some more videos. I've subscribed to your channel.
Fionnuala Nyekwap Jibrin I'm glad it was useful. Sand anchors can be very good, and are often the only way to fly big kites at the beach.
Thank you so much! Yes we'll put up more videos soon, we're just a year old and reintroducing kite flying in Nigeria has been an exciting adventure, every tip from a video helps!
I wish I could come and fly with you, but you're a long way from New Zealand!
I love the reveal at the end of the video. What is it? 50' octopus! I'm pulling the trigger on a sled, so this video is very helpful.
Glad it was helpful, Sheryl. Yes, that's a 50ft Octopus from Emma Kites which I bought more than 12 years ago. It's still flying occasionally.
Master Kite Piloting Sir.
I like your accent!
Great content!
Thank you! We are going to the gulf this summer with kites and I was looking for a way to anchor them.
I'm glad it was useful. Sand anchors are very effective, especially for big kites that you don't want to hang on to all day. I hope you have a lot of fun on your trip! A good place to buy the anchors (2 sizes) is here: www.pictureprettykites.com/kite-accessories/sand-anchor-large/
Awesome! Thanks again Jim!
Great info Jim Thanks
Thanks for this Jim. In the larkshead knot on the carabiner, is 1 knot enough to hold the kite line from being released further, or is two needed? I've seen figure of 8 rings with larkshead used to slowdown the release of lines, so was wondering if that 1st knot on the carabiner is sufficient, and the 2nd larkhead acts as a safety
I find one sufficient with all the kites that I fly, but if you're flying a hard-pulling kite in a strong wind, I guess two might be a good idea. You will find that experience is the best teacher, and you soon get an idea of what works and what doesn't. Some people go to ridiculous extremes and I just laugh when I see some of them. My motto is "Keep it simple!"
Great video...and more inspiration to sew for me...! I have plenty of canvas cloth too that will probably work...:)
You must be very bored if you're looking through all these old videos! Canvas might be OK, but possibly it's more inclined to rip than rip-stop nylon. And might it not rot when it got wet? I have heard of trampoline material being used, which would be excellent if you can come across some. Hard to sew, I would imagine.
no,,,lol..not bored...just curious and I know you are a good bet for great advice. The canvas I have has a plastic back side. So for occasional use i think it will be fine... My mother in law was a great sewer..even made replacements for her awnings on her house! And she graced me with a heavy duty sewing machine years ago. I have yet to come across trampoline cloth ..but I will keep that in mind too. Thanks Jim...:D
You just need to find someone with an old trampoline that they're dumping. A heavy-duty sewing machine is just what you want for that.
I am sure there are resources. Seems lots of people around here have them for the kiddies...
I have a few of them, but I'm going to have to make some now that Gomberg is O.o.B.!
Yes, he's definitely missed!
Can this also hold an 8sqm or 13sqm tadpole? Tadpoles normally pull very hard especially in strong winds.
Yes, with no problem if you follow the method I showed. It can cope with even bigger items, but for the very largest show kites some fliers use two anchors. Bigger sand anchors are also used, but may be hard to buy and you may need to make your own.
@@JimNicholls Id just probably get those 20" earth anchors and a hammer thats more easier and cheaper
I had made 4 of these. They are great at the beach
They are useful, Scott, but I've almost given up using mine as ignorant dog-owners allow their animals to pee all over them, which is not nice. I try to just use driftwood at the beach as anchors, as I don't have to take that home and wash it!
What string did you use on large octopus and does it need a lifter kite ?
I used 300lb braided dacron, and no, it doesn't need a lifter, it flies very well by itself.
@@JimNicholls Thank you Sir.
You are welcome!
Hello. I have a 19' delta single line kite and I'm trying to find an sand anchor that will hold it in beach sand. The gomberg has retired and no longer sells them. I tried to find the sandimal lizards from prettykites and they also are out of stock. Do you know of anywhere else I can find an sand anchor for my big kite. I hate to get rid of my kite. Thank you
The only sand anchor I know of is this one: tinyurl.com/yxs6t8vz . It's expensive, but should be good quality. You could make your own from about a square yard of ripstop nylon and some webbing, perhaps. I hope someone takes over making the Gomberg ones, as they were good value and extremely useful.
Awesome
Thanks!
Glad you found it useful.
After my kite-chase across the dunes and tangle with the brambles, I'm getting a couple of these for the occasions when the driftwood isn't large enough for your excellent instructions on tying down a kite ( ua-cam.com/video/q5qAgwY-B00/v-deo.html ) . Thanks for all your helpful advice so I don't always have to learn the hard way.
I hope you've tracked some down, Teresa, as the Gomberg company have closed down now.
@@JimNicholls Picture Pretty Kites still has them. Mine are already in the mail, although I haven't yet received them.
@@Mzteresam Yes, I knew that Helen had bought the last of Gomberg's stock, but I thought she might have sold them all by now. I hope someone else takes up making them.
The sand anchors I recently received are only 45x45 cm (a little less than 18x18 inches), so i'll only use them on small kites in a light wind. And I'll make sure to use them in a deep hole with wet sand. 2 per package, but i would have been happier with one that was twice the size.
@@Mzteresam Someone needs to start making bigger anchors like the larger Gomberg ones. We miss that company!
