    • @Lowlightt
      @Lowlightt 4 роки тому +12

To be fair he is stating that math is a made up things and that the math works in certain ways because it was designed to present those answers as factual. IE If you do this "math" it provides the "fake" result however he's implying and showing that the math is incredible and can't possibly be true. He's showing he understands the fake narrative that the math was designed to push forth, however hes trying to show the man behind the curtain and that the "math" isn't real.
that being said the guy is either a loony or a charaltan and the math is real and true and not fake or false. But his intention is pretty clear.
"Heres how they tell you this math works, but heres why the math doesn't actually tell you whats important" is closer to the message he's trying to tell in his insane flat earther way.

Math is not a lie. İt's an observation standardized. Even aliens would know 1+1 equals 2 in macro world as long as it has senses comparable to us. They might express it differently but the concept is the same. Basic math is this concept and rest is expansion on this standard. They are still derived from logic and observation even though they are just conceptual and not natural.

"That speed would make anyone fly off the earth, no doubt about it." Really? Then why didn't Jeran demonstrate the math behind that? I'm sure there's an equation that would tell you if and when rotational speed would be enough to overcome earth's gravity and send people flying off into space. If you had a wet tennis ball floating inside a room with no significant source of gravitic attraction, and you spun it at one revolution per 24 hour period, the water would remain stuck to the ball all the way around. But guess what? No flearthers EVER spin the ball at one revolution per day - they spin it at something like one revolution per 0.2 seconds, and of course the water goes flying! (can't really escape the earth's gravity, so a slow spinning ball wouldn't throw off the water, but would still drip)
Here's another thought experiment for Jeran and his ilk; pretend you have a merry-go-round with a diameter of about 10m, or about 32 feet. On the vertical surface of the very outside of the merry-go-round, there are some bacilli bacteria taking up residence. The size ratio between the bacteria and the merry-go-round are roughly equivalent to the ratio between a human and the earth. Now let's gradually spin it up to a speed that will assure us a rotational period of 24 hours. Once it arrives at its proper linear speed to meet the required rotational period, we'll let it spin for a day or two. After the time limit, we'll gradually slow it back down to a stop. Now we'll check to see if the bacilli are still living in the spot where we left them. (assuming we have a good way to mark them so we can find them again after spinning) Sure enough, those bacteria are still gonna be stuck on there.
Thing is Jeran, you fail to factor in the mass of the object - or person - as well as the force of gravity when you think you're "doing the math". When you omit vital parts of the calculation, you get what can only be useful as garbage can filler. At a certain point, an object with enough mass (compared to the mass of the earth and it's subsequent gravitic pull) WOULD fly off into space due to momentum overcoming the pull of gravity. If you just wanted to know how fast the earth would have to spin linearly to launch us human folk into the abyss, it would be about 17,000 MPH, or 28,000 KPH. Take note Jeran, this is about 17 times faster than we're spinning right now.
Science isn't wrong on this, math isn't fake, you're just a ninny looking for anything you can find to try to prop up this ridiculous flat earth conspiracy. And for what? So a handful of disgruntled imbeciles can kiss your ass on the internet? I sure don't see any of you with any kind of actual "plan of action" for this supposed cover-up. If you DO manage to get a majority of the people on your side, what then? Storm the government? Demand they change the textbooks - and all relevant fields of science and industry - to accommodate your "truth"? What does any of this accomplish? Can flat earth theory make even ONE accurate prediction about the reality of the earth that the globe model cannot? (not that I've ever seen) In fact, flearthers can't even seem to put together a coherent FE theory that they all agree on, aside from "earth not round, because smart people stupid".
You had your chance to excel and be knowledgeable in school and college, but you didn't. Instead you moped around grumbling about how the institutions are rigged to feed you bogus information, the government is lying about everything, and how all the people who spent ACTUAL time and ACTUAL effort studying are just sheep. Fuck off mate.

I did a calculation out of interest of how much my gravitional pull towards the earth would change at the pole with 0 linear speed and then at the equator at maximum linear speed.
Linear speed at pole: 0 m/s; at equator: 436.3 m/s. Using the centrifugal/-pedal force equation, radius of 6371 km and my weight of 70kg, we can calculate that the force trying to fling/lift me off of the earth at equator is 2.36 Newtons... Now the force pulling me towards the earth is g*m -> 9.81 (m/s^2) * 70 kg -> 686 Newtons.

If the model conforms with the predictions we can make about reality, and the measurements are also in line with the predictions, then I'd say that we have a pretty good understanding of reality.
This is something a flat earther will never be able to do, using their flat Earth model, which doesn't even exist, and/or using their flerf math (5/0 = 5 or 10^-17 is a negative number, a negative number is any number less than 1, and so on).

@@3cs3hs ok.... Go in the car doing 70, now open a window, its now an open system.
Space ships don't fly freely, just like cars don't travel at 70mph for free. There's tons of fuel burnt by spacecraft to get out of the grip of gravity.
But they too ARE a closed system, the environment inside differs from the one outside. Just because the outside environment changes as they leave, does not mean it's not a closed system. Like scuba diving - once you put the breathing apparatus on, it doesn't matter if you are in water or out, you're breathing from the closed system, the air tank. The environment around you can change from air to water, but you can still breathe.

So, one of my favorite things about the flat earth “debate” is that their arguments against globe earth only work if you take key points out of the model.
“Spinning at this velocity puts a constant upward force on everything standing on the edge of the planet” “How come water conforms to the surface?” “Why don’t we fly off the earth?” Gravity. To all three. “Without gravity, your arguments don’t work!”

    • @cearnicus

_“Without gravity, your arguments don’t work!”_
Yes. Yes, indeed. That's what happens when you remove a crucial part of an explanation: they don't work anymore. That's part of how you tell a proper explanation from a false one.
Take a car for example. The reason a car moves on its own is because of its engine. "But if you remove the engine, the car doesn't work anymore!!11!" Yes ... that's basically what I just said. If instead you removed a mirror, the car would still run fine; which is how we know it's not an essential part of what makes a car go.
I really don't understand how flat earthers have such a hard time understanding this.

You are on the Merry-go-round in his example. You are sitting at the one of the Non-Blue dot, on your horsey. Now, obviously, the Blue Dot horsey is moving faster, according to Jeranuerysm. But, if you are sitting on one of the "slower" moving dot horses, if they have different speeds....shouldn't one be moving away from the other? But you can sit there, rotating at ANY speed you like, and they never change position relative to one another. EVER.
THIS is why we use ROTATIONAL speeds for rotating objects, and linear speeds for objects that aren't rotating.
Centrifugal force has to equal centripetal force because otherwise the object would have an imbalance of forces, and the object would start spiraling inward or outward. The fact that he doesn't grasp (or deliberately ignores) this is very telling.
For orbiting objects, the Centripetal force IS gravity. So of course they have to be equal, or the object wouldn't stay in orbit.

Flat earthers sure seem to love occams razor, but it's a bigger stretch to think that the entire world is against you than to realise you did the math wrong.

Physicist here. Actually the flat earther does have a point. Travelling at constant angular velocity is not the same as travelling at constant linear velocity in terms of Newton's 1st law. If you live at the equator you are not travelling in a straight line, but your accelerate by about 0.03m/s^2 towards Earth's center. (The centripetal acceleration.) That would be enough to be barely noticable if it were not swamped by the gravitational acceleration that is 30 (Edit: 300, thx Jules) times stronger. Still, the sentrifugal effect at the equator is big enough that we tend to prefer to launch space rockets from sites closer to the equator instead of launching them from sites nearer to the poles. At an altitude of about 36 000 km, the sentripetal acceleration becomes equal to gravity, allowing satellites at that altitude to stay in orbit at the same position relative to the earth's surface (the so-called geostationary orbit). And beyond that altitude, anyone maintaining the same angular velocity would actually experience being pulled away from the earth.

This is so ironic, because when he is driving his car he undoubtedly will demonstrate that he perfectly knows the mechanism he so opposes in this video. When he's doing - say - 80 mph and must make a turn into a side street he will slow down because he knows he can't do that with 80 mph, because he will spin out of control and end upside down.
But if he's on the highway and that ever so gently curves over the course of the next mile, he will happily keep on doing 80 mph, because he again knows there is no centrifugal force to speak of.
In other words: he intuitively KNOWS that no matter how fast you're moving, as long as the curve you're following is wide enough, you won't feel a thing. An that thus also goes for a speed of 1,000 mph and the curve of the earth.
Perhaps that's a better analogy to explain it to them. Not talk about linear an angular speed but about the width of the curve in relation to your speed.

@@patmacrotch5611 And how much friction do you need to stay on a merry go round rotating at 1 rotation per day? Very little because the centrifugal force of such a slow rotation is so low.
If the forces didn't balance, you'd not be travelling in a circle.
it's like standing on the ground. The gravitational force pulling you down is exactly matched by the force pushing up on you by the ground. If they didn't match, you'd either be sinking or flying away.

“Centrifugal force” isn’t even a real force. It is a misunderstanding of one’s tendency to continue in a straight line.
A car turns sharply left. The occupant on the outside of the turn perceives that they are getting pressed against the car door. They are actually just attempting to continue moving in a straight line while the car, by turning, presses its door against their body.
