    Have seen these in use with a corporate intranet into mid '97. I don't know the story behind how or why this particular hardware was used but I helped retire them. They were repurposed as pure cable modems and the intranet actually ran on late '70s server hardware until replaced with PII hardware and migrating the intranet to HTML with 10/100 ethernet modems. As the intranet predated the NABU hardware, I have no idea what they used for communication between facilities previously. Was probably originally a purely dial up system and they later took advantage of the NABU to communicate faster between facilities around the globe, as well to remote dial in servers, presumably, but I seem to remember their LAN ran on Ethernet by the time I got there and employees accessed the intranet via the terminal app on their PCs. They had separate file servers by that point because of ever increasing storage requirements. Employees still dialed into the network from home or on the road even for a long time after it became web based.

    I'm from Ottawa, and actually got to witness, and use this system at a friends house, many times during the short time it was around in 1983... I was 15 at the time, it really was ahead of it's time,

      they rented the system, and paid like a subscription, on top of the system rental, like monthly, I kinda of remember them returning it, then it was gone, using it while it lasted was amazing , just to see it at the time, and vividly remember it , @@AlsGeekLab

      The fact that they have it online again through the work of a few individuals is absolutely awesome. They keep expanding it too! There are still a fair few fairly cheap to buy.

    Great video! Thanks for the mention :D It was a lot of work but a ton of fun! Hopefully you get a chance to experience a working NABU someday soon. In the meantime, MAME emulation works well. I'll keep an eye on your channel for new stuff - it's right up my alley

    In Europe most electronics stores carry step-down converters that deliver decent 110V/60Hz output. Surely there‘s something similar available in your part of the world?

    This computer was ahead of its time but in a bad way no physical media it had ads. its like this thing was made by time travellers trying to warn people about the future .

    Common misconception. All US power from the transformer is 240v. Americans then misswire the box to get 120v.

    • @TonyPombo
      @TonyPombo 5 місяців тому +5

      Well, maybe not "miswired". Most US residential power is "single phase" and is provided by two, separate 120v wires. They are 180 degrees out of phase. It's easier to comprehend as one wire being +120v and the other wire being -120v to ground. A device can use both wires if it needs 240v. In most 240v countries, there is only one wire and it is 240v to ground.
      In the US, you have the _choice_ of using 120v or 240v. Almost all receptacles/lights only use 1 wire (120v). 240v outlets are rare and typically only used for high power devices like car chargers, water heaters, clothes dryers, ovens, etc.

      @@TonyPombo i personally have replaced every appliance i can get with 240v. I wired my place (and had a master electrician approve it) so that I could have things like a 240v well pump, etc. I used orange medical outlets for any 240v that looks like a 120v plug. You are correct though in saying it is more +120v, -120v. I guess technically that is the correct answer. I just think of it as 240v.

    Compared to BTX and Minitel which was the closest thing to Nabu we had in Germany and France, Nabu feels like leaps and bounds ahead of what the competition could do.

    Man - I know that if you could have gotten power into that machine you'd of covered it a lot more. Thanks for the details; come to America darn it!!! :)

    Thanks for posting! I'm Canadian and am interested in old computers, yet have never heard of the NABU. The idea sounds similar to France's Minitel, but instead launched by one small company instead of a national government. What could have been!
    Mind if I ask what the name of the piece of music at the end of the video is? Thanks in advance for your time.

      Hi! The platform seemed better than minitel IMO so yes it would have been really cool!
      The music is licensed from Epidemic Sounds and is called Alienated, by ELFL.
