Originally composed as an individual tone poem, Totefeier became the first movement of Mahler's 2nd symphony (I don't know if he made any revisions to the piece when including it in the symphony). So as it was composed as a work to stand on its own, it is totally valid to play it as an individual work. And here, the youth orchestra of the OSG displays its absolute brilliance, with playing superior to any number of fully professional orchestras that come to mind ─ this is challenging music in every sense.. Repeatedly I find myself observing how blessed is Galicia to have both a fully professional orchestra PLUS an absolutely outstanding youth orchestra, both of which should be the envy of most cities around the world.
Mahler made dozens of changes to the orchestration, tempo markings, dynamics, changed or omitted counter themes, and made at least 3 significant cuts. All improvements in my opinion. And I completely disagree that this early version should be performed. Mahler rejected it as a single movement work, revised and greatly improved for years after it was composed, and never would have sanctioned performances of it in its original form.

If I had only listened to music and not watched the video, I would not have noticed that it is a youth orchestra. Jugendliche Aufführung dieses spätromantischen Meisterwerks mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt balancierten Töne aller Instrumente. Der geniale Maestro dirigiert das gut trainierte Orchester im gut phrasierten Tempo mit angenehmer Dynamik. Ausgezeichnet!
Día a día me sorprende, muy gratamente, cómo crece en calidad y variedad esta Orquesta Sinfónica tan jóven de Galicia... Coincido con otro más abajo: es la envidia de muchas ciudades, incluso algunas más grandes y con más disponibilidad económica que La Coruña! Sigan así, por favor!
