- "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" is a 90s children's horror anthology show that air on Nickelodeon. The show is about kids who sit around a campfire and tell scary stories (also known as the Midnight Society) and us as the audience get to watch those scary stories.
In todays video we take a look at "The Tale of the Ghastly Grinner" a comic book villain brought to life to terrorize the kids of the episode. He has the power to laugh so loud it causes his victims to turn into "Giggling Idiots", so his victims just laugh until blue goo comes drooling out of their mouth. The Grinner himself has a terrifying aura and with his horrifying laugh and hideous smile he if definitely one of the SCARIEST villain's in all of "Are you Afraid of the Dark". @@kingnusmiDevil May Cry 3 had a monster clown as well, that being Jester, Arkham's alter ego. The fact everyone(Dante, Vergil, and Lady) gets annoyed by his mere presence and Adam D Clark's performance as both characters really made them sound distinct. Hell, the entire voice acting of DMC3 is so damn good(including Reuben Langdon as Dante, Daniel Southworth as Vergil, Kari Wahlgren/Stephanie Cheeva as Lady, Larry Leong as the demons/Cerberus/Beowulf/Agni & Rudra, Lani Minella as Hell Vanguard, and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as Nevan). One of the best exchanges between characters was during Mission 13: "Don't be a bad girl, Mary." *Throws her* "Or you'll expect a spanking from daddy later!" "Ahahahahahaha!" 🎵Jester's gonna spank your butt, spank you in the buuuuuuutt!🎵 "Insane buffoon!"

I love watching this guy's videos because he reviews shows like Goosebumps, Are You Afraid Of The Dark, and other shows. Which you don’t see a lot and he’s also funny. Nice seeing someone from a Goosebumps episode in this show.

To be fair, the only thing Ethan's parents really did was tell him to get his grades up or they would take his art supplies away, which i think is more then called for if his grades were slipping that badly. Seems like they may have been a little absent emotionally, but that is a common pit fall for a lot of parents. They weren't perfect parents obviously, but who parents really are/were? Not to mention, who bought all those art supplies for him in the first place? I think they were a bit more supportive then we are lead to believe. Great video btw!

This is a very interesting and frightening episode with a cool and frightening monster here. It's like the Joker with deadly powers of making others laugh to be kinda like him. Or as the description to his super powers says, "the power of his looks being so ugly that makes other people into giggling idiots". Or something around those lines.

I recommend checking out the clown episodes of this show. Or if you want less creepy laughs and clowns, I also recommend watching, "The Tale of the Hatching".
The ghastly grinner is definitely one of the better AYAOTD episodes! I do want to make more videos on this show! especially the later seasons have some really good episodes
One of my favourite shows as a kid was "round the twist". It was about an Australian family who lived in a haunted lighthouse. It had one of the best theme tunes ever.

The Ghastly Grinner scared the hell out of me as a kid, but this is one of the episodes that didn't hold up for me because of the acting from the kids. 😂 It reminded me of The Tale of the Phantom Cab, where those two kids couldn't act, either. Still a memorable episode, though. The Grinner's design is just 😩🤌

First of all, fun story: the Joker gas(at least in btas) didn't make his victims laugh themselves *to death*. It literally couldn't, because TV censors wouldn't allow the cartoon villains to actually kill people and the show writers had to come up with a way to get around that. So they invented a gas that put victims in a coma, and frankly, the show would've been less nightmare inducing(and less frickin awesome) if he'd just been allowed to kill people. Yes I am fun at parties, why do you ask?
Second, Hooper was weirder than the creepy ass villain. She introduces herself to Ethan on the phone("I sit across from you in science class"), then when they run into each other outside she starts saying the exact same thing before he cuts her off like he didn't already know her?? Then she introduces herself AGAIN in the science class like they haven't been fighting for their lives this whole time. Idk if she's supposed to be neurodivergent or whatever, but it comes off as weird.
Third, is there a rule in these spooky kids shows that the parents have to suck total butt?
After looking back at the episode,I realize how much Ethan's parents acts like Matilda's parents in the movie.
Man, this episode was a banger. This, Laughing in the Dark and Dead Man's Float are easily the top three scariest episodes
Fantastic episode as always, but I'm actually just thrilled to see someone talking about PTSD Radio! Masaaki Nakayama is the bomb, his other anthology horror manga Fuan no Tane is also amazing fun to read. I would love physical copies of both.

My mom could have sworn I watched this movie when I was about 8. My first R rated film I had watched was The Conjuring and I watched that around 9. Then a few weeks later, I bring it up and she swears that then I watched it. Either I have no memory of anything or she is fuckin delusional because this was a few years ago and she STILL remembers me watching this movie. I know not a single character, nor a monster, not even the plot or setting.
There is one Are You afraid of the Dark? episode that stuck with me all this time.
Well, one of many, but this one in particular because it's weird.
"Station 109.1" is about a kid obsessed with funerals and sleeping like a corpse in the coffin. One day he hears a radio station 109.1 in a hearse or something? And it turns out this is radio for the dead souls.
Apparently Ryan Gosling played the kid.
One of the first episodes of Are You Afraid of The Dark I ever saw. I didn’t think much about it at first, then a couple nights later it started to give me the creeps.

i like how as the series went on their where little hints that something supernatural was REALLY happening, like the fire starting in this episode, it makes for good build up for tale of the silver sight

The drawing other worlds thing is similar to in the mouth of madness where an author goes missing and all his books is just him writing about other worldly monsters that causes the end of the world.

Why? Horror monster turns out to be real, can only be contained by writing/drawing about it, and begins affecting/attacking people in the real world, before eventually a happy ending.
When my friend wanted to watch AYAOTD and he'd never seen it before, this was the second episode I chose for him to watch

Tale of the Dead Man’s Float definitely has the scariest villain. Bleghhh!!! I still think about it and i haven’t watched that episode since it prob came out in 1995 because it was that disturbing! And i am someone who loves horror even from a very young age, but seeing that thing at 7 years old just stuck with me.
My man I think I remember watching this weird clown manipulate people into fighting I think anyways, I think I watched this episode in church which is crazy. I love your work man keep up the great job.

I’m a little ashamed to admit it but I actually never heard of are you afraid of the dark before watching your videos, I grew up with goosebumps and the haunting hour haha
That’s all good! It was around in the early 90s and goosebumps was around for the later 90s so it leaked into the early 2000s
This episode wasn't scary to me as a kid. I know a lot of people found it scary at the timr, but this one made me roll my eyes with how many horrible decisions Ethan made.
The villain that scared me the most as a kid (like most episodes of AYAOTD is now vastly dated and is cringe now) was Zeebo the clown from The Tale of Laughing in the Dark. It relied more on the suspense of what you didn't see rather than what actually is (of course the episode was worse if you had coulrophobia). It was a solid episode.
Definitely one of the scariest episodes.
