    Alternatively to an outright 3 point take-down they can incorporate control time of 10 seconds to get the additional point. That would make the initial scramble immediately off the take down that much more important and add another friction point to keep working. More importantly you can yell out "TWO!" and still get that final point after 10 seconds of control.

      This would become way too confusing for fans. You already have to show control. I love the 3 point takedown because it eliminates the whole 3 take downs and letting your opponent up while still only bring 6-3. Then, if your opponent gets a takedown and later goes down and stands up escape, then they essentially tied it with just one take down.

      They are just adding a turn component, so if you sit there on the ankle and I don’t do anything - no points. You have to turn the opponent to get your riding Time point, Which will speed up things. People want to see scoring.

    Reversals should be worth more than 2. An escape and a takedown is worth 3 (4 now I suppose), but an actual technique that accomplishes both an escape and a takedown at the same time is only worth 2. I like to see a tough ride out. It wears guys down and cements the match. In many cases, a good ride means all the difference in tight matches. I don't support removing the ride time point. Escapes are tough, I think they should keep the escape point. I thought 2 points for a takedown was good. Going 3 would put a big premium on take downs, but it already was the primary factor in wins. If they go three, it would be even more so. I like making guys go for the turn. If you take away the ankle hook it will be much tougher for riding out a guy. Of course one might think it would change final scores...so one might say "oh the other guy (Wrestler B) woulda won with the new 3pt takedown/no ride time rules rules" -- except, well, Wrestler A would change his tactics also. Say in NFL a FG was changed to be worth 4. You can't simply just add 1 point to every FG that was kicked in past games to come up with different winners for the games based on a 4 pt FG. The team that the FG was scored against, would change it's decisions the entire game.

    Really like all the proposed changes except the 3 point takedown. Takedowns are already twice as valuable as an escape. Awarding 3 points has the effect of reducing the value of being able to prevent your opponent from escaping. It's also less interesting to watch a takedown and immediately the opponent is set free with no wrestling on the mat, which it will encourage, especially where it's not such a gamble (2 points v 1 point) to choose that strategy. A rule change I'd like to see would be to call stalling much more quickly. Pet peeve is watching a "better" wrestler get ahead, then spend tons of time wrestling to a standoff and obviously not trying to score. It'd be a much better wrestling match if that kind of stalling is called very quickly (as quickly as in freestyle to put a wrestler on the clock). Sometimes when the "better" wrestler keeps wrestling, you never know what will happen (ask Real Woods how much one move can cost the favorite).

    Adding 3 with the 2 and 4 point near fall will be a big change. Are they keeping the one pt escape and 2 reversal? That will be a point of contention. So you use to get a takedown and the guy could reverse for 2. 2 and 2. Now one gets a takedown for 3 but gets reversed for 2. Now add in if the guy starts 2 or 3rd period and takes down. He gets a reversal for 2, but never gave up a takedown. Will that be 3 points. Will they need to clarify that. Something like an offensive reversal. If he starts down (meaning choice not down because he was taken down) and gets a reversal. Can he get 3 just like a takedown. Then an defensive reversal. Meaning he got taken down, and then reverse the guy and gets 2.
    How will this change the escape. How many coaches have yelled "1 not 2" Down guy does he go a a escape for 1 and go for the 3 takedown. If they get rid of the 1 escape will that cause wrestlers to go for the reversal. This mean guys will stay on bottom longer, not worrying about riding time. Then they will work for the 2 reversal, but when your down you risk getting turned for 2, 4 and now 3. If they make all reversals 3 (equal to a takedown) the matt wrestling will change. It will interesting to see
    Prediction: During the first month of the season some tops guys will lose due to the new rules. Then the coaches will adjust and it will right itself by tourney time.

  • @dvdly
    @dvdly Рік тому

    Only doing away with riding time makes sense to me. I get the motivation to increase the action, but mark my words, if they implement a three-point take down, it will not accomplish that. As it stands we see a lot of passivity by both wrestlers on the feet because they fear losing the take down, and another point will do nothing to change that. And, anyway, anyone who still loses after having more take downs should improve from the top position. Folk style is all about being the best in the aggregate, and a complete wrestler has a better chance than someone who is merely dominant in one of the skills. I otherwise think the goal in rules revisions should be to remove referee subjectivity as much as possible from the matches, which fans would support, and new fans would better be able to understand.
    One thing about freestyle I like is the shot clock. If folk style would implement a version of that in the first period it could look thus: If after two minutes it is still scoreless, split the final minute of the first period with each wrestler being put on a thirty second clock, with one point being awarded in each case to the opponent for a failure to score a take down. No more stalling calls.
    From top, with no riding time point awarded, the only thing the stalling rider achieves is saving an escape or reversal. Therefore they've done a minimal job and gained no major advantage from the position. No stalling call needed.
    From bottom, an escape gets you a point. A wrestler with the lead from bottom who wants to stall out the final period should be able to. It's incumbent upon the top wrestler to be able to turn or cut and get more points. If, on the other hand, the bottom wrestler is behind, they need to get out. To prevent the scenario whereby a top wrestler runs the opponent out of bounds repeatedly, award an escape to a wrestler who can stand both of their feet out of bounds.

    I like the proposed changes. I wish they would add the push out point in Folkstyle to keep the match in the center. And they need to totally clarify the locking hands reaction time, I have had so many refs to call this inconsistently, after a spectacular throw when they hit, the mat with locked hands to finish the throw most of the time they call, “locked hands” and break up the action and penalize the aggressor., This deincentivizes people from throwing, which is the best part of wrestling let’s be honest. They should allow two seconds of reaction time when they hit the mat from a throw to unlock hands.

  • @mattwhite22
    @mattwhite22 Рік тому

    I'm not a fan of "cheap tilts" and racking up the score. Give 1 point for a back exposure and 4 points for a 5 swipe. I think this will help the refs and replays too. The exposure helps reward feet to back moves slightly and also discourage "cheap tilts" in my opinion. Reward exposure but really reward controlling exposure. Also, maybe cap near fall by period or match. Maybe 8 NF per period, 12 NF per match. Again incentivize genuine unsuccessful pinning attempts and pins.
    More enforcement on top stalling. Keep riding time and no requirement for a turn.
    1st top stall lose half riding time,
    2nd top stall RT is cut in half again plus bottom is awarded a point,
    3rd top stall RT cut in half again, bottom awarded 1 point plus the escape(an additional point).
    Might have to incorporate RT into bottom stall penalties as well so double stall calls are even. So bottom stall calls would double riding time.
    Impartial to 2 or 3 point takedowns, but a reversal needs to match a takedown. If takedown and reversal goes to 3 points, stall points need to change to remain and effective deterant. I could even see 3 points for initiated takedown, 2 points for defensive takedown.
    Push out rule could help with stalling and action.
    I'd love to see high school and college rules match. If riding time is eliminated this becomes closer to reality. But if riding time is eliminated there needs to be a non-subjective deterant to stalling on bottom.

    If you want real action, then get closer to "freestyle" wrestling scoring rules. Take down - 2 pts., cannot turn opponent - back on your feet. Rewards much more action and skills then "folk style." I agree totally, with doing away with riding time - legalized stalling. Thanks FloWrestling for describing a step in the right direction!

    Curious How does a reversal work then? If its 3 then it becomes uneven with the 1 pt escape. If its 2 then you can get taken down then reverse and ride and still be down 1pt. 3pt take down makes things assymetrical

    I always felt 2 was not enough and this sounds dumb keeping up with fractions but my idea was 2.5 as it keeps the mat artist still in the fight. 3pts will eliminate all who are not TD artist. You can ride from NY to Scali and it wont matter.

    no reaction time td should remain, rear standing neutral is a dominant controlling position in grappling especially when strangles are allowed (you have the back) so the fact that you have to cut the guy loose upon taking him down because no locked hands folkstyle, the offensive wrestler still deserves his points since he had control before the takedown but had to unlock his hands afterward (cutting the guy loose essentially)

      glad someone else understands there are different styles for a reason. if someone doesn't like folkstyle rules, he/she can just train for freestyle like they do overseas. don't ruin folkstyle by making it too much like freestyle, which to me is an inferior discipline. there's a reason folkstyle wrestlers win more mma matches than other discipline, because it teaches how to control an opponent on the ground.

    This is great! I'm glad to see riding time go. It is difficult to explain to newcomers and it is a pain for score keepers. High school wrestling doesn't have it. It is also pretty lame to see a match decided by a second or two of ride time one way or the other. I like the 3 point take down as well. Making take downs 3 makes room for adding a step out point down the line. One take down equaling an escape and two step outs seems about right to me.
    I have seen comments here describe the game of jumping out of bounds before you get scored on as "mat awareness". I disagree. Having a step out point comes with its own mat awareness and incentives action as well. Step out points would make the transition to free style that much easier which is a good thing if we want Americans to do well in international competition.

Idk Maybe call it a defensive td or something and they only get 1-2 points whereas a actual 3 point td would be a successful shot lift etc

    The Change on the rule for Control of a takedown of person getting the takedown but the defensive spins under to ankle and he is on his back. Just because the wrestler has an ankle and trying to spin behind the offensive man can later get the reversal if he succeeds. Because many wrestlers are almost pinning themselves. The Offensive wrestler needs to be given the points.

If you get held down for 2-3 minutes in a match you deserve to give up a point. I also hate anything that gives refs further power to call stalling and influence matches. Leads to way too much unnecessary controversy

    I’m ok with riding time not being a thing anymore, not happy about it, but I’m fine with it. But the 3 point takedown is ridiculous in my opinion. It’s been two points for as long as I can remember (unless of course we’re talking about freestyle), and we’re already struggling to action packed matches, and this rule is only going to increase that. All a guy has to do is get two takedowns, and the as long he only gets taken down once, he wins the match. He could get those takedowns in the first period and stall the rest of the match. I don’t like that change, I think they need to keep it at 2 point takedowns
