Rahova Prison on the outskirts of the two Million Mega-City Bucharest is the second biggest prison in Romania.
Surrounded by two walls, murderers, human traffickers and worse are serving their sentences. Escaping from here is nearly impossible. Each cell wing is monitored separately.
Cameras record all movements in its corridors. Prisoners are in their cells for twenty-hours a day. They can only leave under the strictest security measures. Even a walk in the prison yard takes place in cages.
    Yikes 😳

Best one I've heard was in the Ohio State Reformatory. Guy that worked in the shoe/boot factory hid himself in a crate of boots to escape. Turned out the crate he hid in went to the Ohio State Penitentiary. So he managed to break out of one prison into another in one day.

That was a really fancy prison... they should do one of these documentaries on prisons in MISSISSIPPI. Go to the zones called Castle Grey Skull and The Thunder Dome where convicts regularly kill inmates and gang fights happen almost every day. My experience of prison in Mississippi fighting to be independent and serve my time alone without joining a gang really taught me the true value of freedom and independence. Those two things are irreplaceable.

Heck, I thought the Prisons in the United States were beach homes, let me add something first, a good majority of Federal Prisons are like that. That is where the adage “Club Fed” comes from.
Also State Penitentiaries vary from State to State and so does some of their basic mission statements and so forth. The minimum security level penitentiaries are usually not so bad. But when you’re talking about maximum security prisons…you’re basically in hell. Then the Supermax Prisons like ADX Florence….you are in your cell I believe 23 hours a day.
I know some countries just throw their criminals in a walled in and fenced in building with towers for guards to shoot and they basically let the prisoners run the place. That’s horrible. But this prison in this documentary seems like the cells are like a one room suite you could rent here in the states. Looks like they treat the inmates much more like human beings than just garbage and the guard seems like he genuinely cares about rehabilitation and the welfare of the prisoners. Which is what penitentiaries are supposed to be about, rehabilitation through paying your debt to society by being confined away from them and then try to come out a better person.

European Union has higher standards for human rights and even though you think our romanian prison looks decent, we are one of the worst in Europe. It happens pretty often for us to not have our fugitives sent back to serve their time, when they are caught in western europe. The reason being our poor detention conditions, with overcrowding being the main reason. We were even sanctioned by the EU not a long time ago, for this issues.

At that time inmates were "re-educated", and de-personalized and if this didn't work, or the "treatment" was unbearable then they passed away! Let me tell you something about Rahova prison.
The conditions are far better than other prisons in Romania. One of the explanations is that it is a "transit prison", meaning that many convicts are being held there while their trial is still ongoing or are about to be transfered to other prisons.
There are far worse prisons in Romania. Case in point, the Giurgiu Penitenciary. They simply slowly let you die there.

In my opinion as a romanian they have it way too good and this is causing people not to be afraid of prison. They'll say: "I'll get 6 months and I'll be out, so what?" Prisons should be about the punishment, not for prisoners to have the same conditions as some student dorms, I think this is the first prison I've seen to have a market within it.

The worst CO is the ones that are your friend one day and locking you up the next day. You have to be consistent and be by the book. My father was a CO for 23 years and because he was strict but fair and honest. When they had a riot 12 inmates walked my dad off the compound and other COs that were fair. The ones that took pleasure in making life miserable for the inmates were not. They were beaten up so badly only 2 of 9 were able to work again.

  • @adrianstere

Tate brothers have not been in any prison. They been only in detention (arest) in Romania. Basically, the worst place in Romania to be. Prisons have much better conditions but they can only send you there if you have a final sentence. Otherwise, you need to spend some months on the police station itself (arest) and this one’s they haven’t been upgraded at all since communism. The conditions are indeed compared like in some South American countries. And you can really get sick if you spend to much time in there. Most of the criminals in Romania they just stay there only 1-2 months then after are sent to prison. But for a person to spend 6 months there it’s indeed horrible. Only if you want to kill someone with a disease you will try that. That’s why there are no documentaries about the “arest” places in Romania as they can’t allow anyone to see the dare conditions in there. Not dangerous as for conflicts but more because of the diseases are there from the lack of conditions.

I've never been to prison but what I have heard about prisons in the US, they seem way worse. Regardless of the massive security, these prisoners seem to be treated like people. Respect is reciprocated. In the US, prisons aim to 'rehabilitate' by dehumanizing people and some of the guards should be in prison, themselves. The US prison system is a business and most are corrupt.
