Lube Every Type of Mechanical Keyboard Switch! Tactile, Linear, Silent, Box!

- Welcome back to Keybored! Comprehensive tutorial for you to teach how to lube mechanical keyboard switches! In this tutorial, I want to cover not just 1 type of switch, but most of them. Tactile, Linear, Silent and even the Box. There has been a lot of requests to make a detailed lubing tutorial, and I hope this helps!
Jumping into the Mechanical Keyboard hobby, I realized that there were so many different types of switches at your arsenal. This was amazing because I could really custom tailor what I want out of my mechanical keyboard, from sound to feel to function. What I also discovered pretty quickly was that in order to get the most out of these switches, they have to be lubed and filmed. I don't think there is anyone in the community that says... "I would love to spend my evening lubing 200 switches!"
As tedious this task may be, I feel it's worth it at the end of the day. We're in this hobby trying to get the most optimal typing experience right?

where did you get that pegboard and containers? looks sooo clean
This is what I needed in my life a year ago! SO HELPFUL!
Thank you for stopping by Betty! I appreciate the comment and I hope it provides support to all of us spending countless hours lubing switches into the late evenings... Loved the new vid on MT3!
OH MAH GOD BIG FAN
How much lube do you need for a keyboard? 65%
@@hubby8228 about 2 grams
Betty what do u think the best started keyboard for custom is I rlly wanna get into this hobby
As someone who's about to sit down to lube & film his first set of switches, I really appreciate the level of detail & the prescriptive nature of all of the advice!
literally a top tier lubrication tutorial and this man doesn't even have 7k subs. PEOPLE, SUB ALREADY JFC
Thank you so much for the support Gemini! I really appreciate it!
awesome video, great explanation and thank you for covering box switches! I actually used your technique on my box pinks, and it's amazing how much better they sound, even those they are still 'clicky' - great job!
Thank you so much MusicMech! I'm glad the video was helpful!
100% the best switch lubing tutorial available.
Hey Scott,
this is by far the best switch lubing tutorial out there, thanks for this awesome video!
It would be absolutely awesome if you could do such a video on tuning stabs, covering clip-ins and screw-ins.
Please keep creating content just as you do and stay healthy!
Your voice and the chill music in the background is the perfect backdrop to lubing my first set of switches. Great video
This is exactly what I need! It is very informative and helpful. I enjoyed so much how you explain how to make creamy sound with science. Extra benefit: good review for my Physics midterms. :)
Thank you sir for your in depth reviews, comprehensive knowledge and amazing videos! Keep up the amazing work.
Thank you! Will do!
thank you so much! the production quality is amazing!
I hear the back beat music but I kind of can also hear a tutorial video playing in the back ground too. That’s actually really cool
Haha, that's actually my fault... sometimes as I capture the footage or b-roll, I speak as I do it to time how much of the footage I need... but I forgot to mute the track so it ended up playing into the main audio track...
This is a life saver! I feel ready to tackle these Box Jades!
Glad it was of help!
Awesome video, I got into the custom keyboard scene back in may and I'm loving it!
:) The rabbit hole is soooo deep and vast!
Thanks for another great & enjoyable video. Keep going with awesome content!
Thank you so much Michal! Will keep at it!
when I did my first keyboard I felt like that small amount of lube did absolutely nothing for my switches, and preferred a little bit more lube, I liked to be able to see a small bit of shine to the switch, maybe this is me being an ignorant newcomer to the hobby but how much did that really do? maybe cause 204 is a bit easier to spread then 205g0 it is more effective? id love for someone to tell me if I have good reasoning or if I'm stupid for thinking that way.
Hi CJR! These days, many switches do come with a little bit of lube, so sometimes a tiny bit more doesn't produce dramatic results. However, this hobby is all preference, so there is no right or wrong, or ignorant :) You do what you like the best! I lube glorious pandas with a thicker 205... because I prefer that over 204 :)
Thanks for the tutorial, Scott! Really nice to see tutorials on different styles of switches in one video.
No problem at all SHCTeva! I hope the tutorial is helpful and provides good context for so many of us doing this for too long lol.
Thanks to you I got through 20 switches, lubed and filmed, in 2.5 hours this morning (it was my first time lubing and I went slow.) Only 50 more, I can do this :)
Good luck!
solid video thank you! i am getting ready to lube kailh box white switches for the first time.
Rapidly becoming one of my favorite channels, inspiring me to start my own channel! Keep up the amazing work!!!
Hi Pedro! You should do it for sure! It's a grind, but also great to put content out there that can be helpful to others!
god damn that is one hell of a good sound that stock version makes compared to my 4 years old razor blackwidow lol
Thank you Van! I appreciate the comments!
Another informative video, especially about lubing Kailh switch. Thanks!
No problem! I hope it was helpful :)
thank u so much. i want to build a custom keyboard and i looked at it a long time but i just never made the move to do it cuz of lubing but u are helping me out alot hopefully i can build my custom next monthhhh
Personally I think this is a great video, but I also think the sound comparison should have been done with a different switch since the L4s come pre lubed, so you won’t hear much of a difference. I would personally use a holy panda or even a glorious panda since imo you can really hear the difference
Thanks for the suggestion Nicholas! You are definitely right about the L4 being lightly lubed!
19:41 I NEEDED TO LUBE SOME BOX SWITCHES, THANK YOU
No problem! Hope it works out great!
@@Keybored whats a good lube for novelkeys dry yellow?
This is a really great video! Thanks for the info
best guide for lubing switches hands down
Thank you so much! Glad it was helpful!
Thank you friend your video helped me a lot, this is the best video on youtube about the switches
:) You're very welcome and so glad to hear that!
Be advised that not every switch needs to be filmed. For instance, my favorite switch, the KTT Kang White V3, does not require any film, as the switch housing is already very tight and allows for the stem to not move around as much. In fact, filming the switch turned out to completely destroy each of the switches in my keyboard due to it already being so tight, which caused me to have to buy another set and lube them (for hours...) However, some switches like the Banana Splits should be filmed as the housing is not very tight stock and should be modified for the best sound and feel.
I love you ❤️ sorry I’m really tired and this will help me tomorrow for when my lube, films, and switches come tomorrow 😁
So glad it can be of help! Lubing the switches are a chore for sure, and I hope this tutorial helps!
wow that demonstration of lube vs lube + film blew me away. I always thought film was overboard but the difference is way more noticeable than I thought.
I have a lot of your tutorials like this saved in my mech keyboards playlist lmao
:) Thank you Tarun!
Amazing video, u helped a lot of newbies like me
:) really happy to hear that!
This video has been a tremendous help to me! Thank you so much for posting!
I'm having trouble locating a size 3 or 4 brush like the one you are using for the linear. Are there any you could recommend? Thank you!
Very handy video. Would love to see a video of how you recommend lubing different kind of stabs :)
:) One of these days, I'll make a video on stabilizer tuning!
Awesome! I just ordered a bunch of alpacas and I’ll be using this video to help lube them myself
Hope it helps Sketchy Rabbit! Alpacas are great switches by the way!
@@Keybored thanks, I’m looking forward to it! It seems like such a long wait for their arrival 🤣
@@sketchyrabbit5226 it'll be worth it!
hey would really appreciate it if you made a video of lubing stabs, cause the level of detail with which you explain is really helpful! Thanks!
Hi Aryaman! I've always been meaning to do that, but just haven't had a chance to get around to it. But stabilizer maintenance is definitely a topic that is on the list!
@@Keybored eagerly waiting 😁
After 2 years of arrmy, now i have to rewatch all the videos to get back to the track :)))
Great video for newbie like me, love the explaination on every switch. Keep it up bro 🤜
Glad it was helpful!
@@Keybored can i ask a question about why in the video you said that you only lubed the glorious panda sw legs
Really like your videos, aspecially your scientific approach in the recent ones!! I was wondering: do you lube the springs of tactile switches?
Ah sorry, somehow didn't notice that part of the video 😅
So comprehensive!
Thank you!
Awesome video! Also, now I can't stop hearing the 'clunk' of an unlubed switch.
:) Once you hear it, you can't unhear it
I've been looking for a box lubing tutorial all my life. Thank you.
Hi DVa! Not a lot of content on box switches! A lot of people also just ignore lubing them because they tend to lose lube fairly quickly... But I feel that lubing really benefits them and a thicker lube helps to retain longer.
the stock type test was already so much better than my lubed keyboard
:) I think because many of these switches come lightly pre-lubed
Very informative video! Subscribed. May I also ask how many switches can you fit into one of those ikea clear containers?
Hi 4evNaruto4eva! Thank you so much for the sub! I feel I can put enough switches in to fill out a Tkl... So about 90
This is amazing.
Thank you Mario!
thanks very helpful
Honestly for tactiles I prefer going for a very tactile switch, and dialing it back a bit by lubing the legs too!
or with short springs! That dials back the tactility a whole lot!
Can I also use Trombone oil for bag lubing? So that i don't have to buy the Super Lube. Awsome Video thats the best tutoral ive ever seen.
Man just the name of your channel merits a like and subscribe hahaha !
if I’m lubing a light tactile switch like the cotton candy switches, should I decrease the amount of lube while following your tactile lubing portion of the video or it’s okay to follow with the same amount?
6:40 I'm trying out the glorious panda next week, so it would be great to hear your opinion on why you'd lube the legs specifically on them?
Hi Florian! I typically don't lube the legs of tactile switches, but the glorious pandas I do. Reason is that the first batches I received had some pretty noticeable pinging, that I could not get rid of with standard lubing of the housing/stem/springs. Interestingly enough, krytox 205 on the legs or the leaf itself, really helped to get rid if the ping. If you want maximum tactility, don't lube the leg, but if you're sensitive to noise, then I would lube the leg or leaf with 205 :)
I need to save this!
:) hope it can be of help!
20:36 they're called box switches because of the "box" structure encasing the actuation mechanism
You didn't provide a link for the switch opener. I'm hoping I can find it in one of your other videos descriptions. Or I will just find one myself instead of being lazy. :P I have seen other UA-camrs with big square switch holders when lubing. That could be handy as well if I find those and understand how to use them. LOL Great information btw. Excellent for noobs like myself. Explained very concisely. Thank you.
EXCEPTIONAL !
Thank you very much!
@@Keybored you have nooooooooooooo idea how muchhhhhhhhhhh i tried to find THAT video which would clearly depict how to lube tactile switches...the next best is Switch and Click's article ! Hats off brother ! I'm in the process of making my own K2V2 mod video...Thanks a ton !
Thank for the video. I have the NuPhy air 75 with low profile brown switches. What lube and brush size do you recommend? Thanks in advance!!
Would love if you do a comparison between krytox 205 G0 and glorious glube and thanks for the video it was very helpful
Krytox 205 for linears all the way! The Glube is not my favorite :(
Hay, great video quality. Umm, I have a question though. What does adding film to a linear key do?
It almost acts like a spaceboard stablizer.
Keeps it from wobbling.
Great video! I have a question: how do u lube pre-lube switches? Do u clean them? Or do u lube on top of the factory lube?
You should clean them before applying lube. If not, you could end up with two different lubes or over lubing your switches (which feels awkward)
Oh man.. nice video AGAIN XD
Thanks Danny! I appreciate the comment!
Blues have the biggest improvement when lubed I've found
Really informative and helpful video! May I ask if it's okay to use Krytox 203 g0 instead of 204 g0 when lubing tactile switches?
Hi Aryssa! Glad it was helpful. You sure can, it'll just make the switch feel faster, since the lube is also thinner :)
@@Keybored thanks again!
Solid tutorial, thanks! Silly question, but how are you cleaning residual lube off switches and more importantly, fingers?
off my fingers, just regular soap :) For residual lube, I use a brush to get it off and wipe that clean with a paper towel
@@Keybored For switches that are lubed from the factory, do you tend to just apply over it, or are you cleaning them up first?
This was so helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Wow, i didnt notice it was 30minute long looks like im enjoy it
Hi Vic! I hope it's not too boring! Wasn't even planning to make a 30 min lube video, but realized that it's a pretty involving task haha. Thanks for watching!
Thank you, this is is a very helpful video. For silent Durocks, which have a different silencing mechanism, will the lubrication method still be the same? I certainly don't want squelchy switches.
I don't have first hand experience with the silent durocks, but from experience with other silent switches, the trick is always with the soft bits. Too much lube here makes the thing squelchy. If possible, avoid, otherwise, go very light on these soft bits.
@@Keybored Thanks! Will give it a shot.
Great video! Do you think for silent switches, that the springs can be put into a bag with lube and shaken? Rather than lubing individual springs?
For sure! The spring lubing will be the same for silent switches as well as the others :)
@@Keybored thank you!!
@@Keybored what kind of films are you using?
@@bre4472 hi bre, I mostly use tx films now. I like that they have the middles cut off so they don't interfere.
What switch were you using at the beginning comparison
Absolutely amazing video! I Love what you do, also what black keycaps are those? Where did you buy them from?
Thank you so much Chad! I really appreciate that! The black keycaps are mistel doubleshot PBT caps from amazon! Pretty thick and nice keycaps, especially for the price! amzn.to/3u8CiVo
The linear switch that you used has 67g spring, would you use a different lube if the spring was lighter (i.e. 45-50 g) ?
I have a newbie question. Is lubing only about sound? or does it also makes it so the switch is not as stiff?
I have one key that feels more difficult to press possibly because I press it a lot, would help in making it smoother? or is this just a switch problem?
Hi! Where did you buy your switch containers? :)
Hey I'm sort of new to this, would you use bag lubing with springs for tactile switches also or is it better to lube individually?
Yup! I use bag lubing with switches since it's just so much more convenient!
@@Keybored Thanks for the reply! Keep making the awesome videos!
This couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. My brushes, switch films, and krytox arrived today!
That's great news James! I hope they turn out great!
should the film be considered a shim which will increase contact distance when pressing the switch?
Lucky for us today you can get the Nuphy Halo96 that is factory lubed and filmed and dampned all for $160
If I may ask, where did you buy the pegboard and the switch containers at the start of the video? Do you have any links? Thanks!
Hi Mirko! The pegboard and the bins were from ikea! Part of their pegboard organization system :)
OMG TYSM
You're very welcome!
What stock keyboard were you using on the very first sound test with the stock keyboard?
Hi Giovanni! The keyboard used for stock and lubed/filmed sound test is a heavily modified NK65 Entry Edition! Here is a link to that mod video if interested! ua-cam.com/video/rFHiQcC2oAQ/v-deo.html
I read somewhere on reddit that you should break in switches before lubing them. Does this apply to all switches? And does this apply to tactile switches? The only really talked about it towards linear switches
Hi Hello, World! It does apply to certain switches. One prime example is the NK Cream, where the POM on POM action requires a bit of wear down before you apply lube to it. Some also do this to MX blacks as well. However, most others actually can be lubed right away and still yields great results.
Please Guide on Options Available for entry level Custom Hot Swappable keyboard. BTW great Content!
Thank you ajr! Will look into some entries in the future like the gk or sk series!
I don’t know if you’ll still read the comments, but I tried lubing my linear switch and found out that having lube on the leaves actually makes the keys not register properly, so I actually had to remove any excess lube on them for them to work :(
do you think using 205G0 to lube the springs for gazzew U4T reduce the tactile bump? coz im changing the springs to 22m 2 staged spring instead for more tactility
does anyone know what the numbers mean on the Super Lube? Does it indicate viscosity? what does a higher number mean? Thank you
I just checked and I have the 51014 Super Lube oil. Would this be alright for the springs as well?
Hi Durian! Unfortunately I do not know lol. I used the superlube 51004 but as long as the 51014 is similar, I believe it won't impact the springs that much
@@Keybored okay, i wanted to do the bag lubing for my future switches, so i was just curious. I think ill stick with 205g0 for my springs just to be safe since it's a known brand lol. thanks for the reply!
hey, what do you recommend lube for brown switches, i heard it's not a good tactile, some people think it is not a tactile switch, so what is the best lube for this switch? i want to make this silent and thoccy :)
I would recommend using Krytox 204!
How long does it take to lube all the switches of a TKL-keyboard? Aren't there switches already lubed and filmed. But I'm not going to waste my time on lubing anyway. I preferred the stock sound of the used keyboard over the lubed one.
hi, can i just not lube the stem for my tactile switches, will it change the smoothness and sound?
Hello! could you tell me the name of the container wall you have for your switches shown in the beginning of the video? I need those in my lifeeeeeee
Hi Ryan! The container wall is part of ikeas peg board storage! Hope that helps!
20:15 Got the green thingy out... this was so hard to put it back together D:
:) Good luck! Hope it turned out ok!
So I don’t need really thin lube for the springs. Right?
I didn't scroll down far enough to see if anyone said anything. But it's not called a box switch because of the stem. It's called box bc the leaf is inside of a box which makes it water resistant and without containments.
For tactile switch, can we use krytox 203 instead of 204??
Also you can just use a paintbrush a rlly thin one for lubing the switches
You sure can! That's what I used a long time ago
omg could you do a stabs vid next!
Yup I'm planning that video in the future!
Question!! Why don’t you bag lube? Is it just precision is key?
I have a question is G-LUBE good for stabs and tactile switches
Have you tried lubing Boba U4T's this way vs the Gazzew way? I'm curious how different it'd be.
I never tried to lube them the Gazzew way... one of these I will try
Hey I was wondering if some cherry mx speed sliver will work on the hot swap-able gmmk pre built I’m getting the tkl version and I wanna get into the hobbit I just don’t know if they would work so if you could tell me it would be very help full.
Yup! They should work!
Hi, why do we click the mouse over the keyboard first ?
