  • Welcome back to Keybored! Comprehensive tutorial for you to teach how to lube mechanical keyboard switches! In this tutorial, I want to cover not just 1 type of switch, but most of them. Tactile, Linear, Silent and even the Box. There has been a lot of requests to make a detailed lubing tutorial, and I hope this helps!
    Jumping into the Mechanical Keyboard hobby, I realized that there were so many different types of switches at your arsenal. This was amazing because I could really custom tailor what I want out of my mechanical keyboard, from sound to feel to function. What I also discovered pretty quickly was that in order to get the most out of these switches, they have to be lubed and filmed. I don't think there is anyone in the community that says... "I would love to spend my evening lubing 200 switches!"
    As tedious this task may be, I feel it's worth it at the end of the day. We're in this hobby trying to get the most optimal typing experience right?
    Tactile Switch - 2:06
    Linear Switch - 8:30
    Silent Switch - 13:58
    Box Switch - 19:41
    Bag Lubing Springs - 27:21
    Sound Test - 28:56
    Tools used in this tutorial

    Super Lube 51004 Synthetic PTFE (spring)

    Brushes (Flat #0 is most versatile)

    Tweezers
    amzn.to/37t82uO
    Prong Tool / Holder
    amzn.to/387VQA2
    I use a different prong tool in the video, but this doesn't require 2 hands to operate and just works better

    when I did my first keyboard I felt like that small amount of lube did absolutely nothing for my switches, and preferred a little bit more lube, I liked to be able to see a small bit of shine to the switch, maybe this is me being an ignorant newcomer to the hobby but how much did that really do? maybe cause 204 is a bit easier to spread then 205g0 it is more effective? id love for someone to tell me if I have good reasoning or if I'm stupid for thinking that way.

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 роки тому +2

      Hi CJR! These days, many switches do come with a little bit of lube, so sometimes a tiny bit more doesn't produce dramatic results. However, this hobby is all preference, so there is no right or wrong, or ignorant :) You do what you like the best! I lube glorious pandas with a thicker 205... because I prefer that over 204 :)

    Be advised that not every switch needs to be filmed. For instance, my favorite switch, the KTT Kang White V3, does not require any film, as the switch housing is already very tight and allows for the stem to not move around as much. In fact, filming the switch turned out to completely destroy each of the switches in my keyboard due to it already being so tight, which caused me to have to buy another set and lube them (for hours...) However, some switches like the Banana Splits should be filmed as the housing is not very tight stock and should be modified for the best sound and feel.

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 роки тому +2

      Hi Florian! I typically don't lube the legs of tactile switches, but the glorious pandas I do. Reason is that the first batches I received had some pretty noticeable pinging, that I could not get rid of with standard lubing of the housing/stem/springs. Interestingly enough, krytox 205 on the legs or the leaf itself, really helped to get rid if the ping. If you want maximum tactility, don't lube the leg, but if you're sensitive to noise, then I would lube the leg or leaf with 205 :)

      I don't have first hand experience with the silent durocks, but from experience with other silent switches, the trick is always with the soft bits. Too much lube here makes the thing squelchy. If possible, avoid, otherwise, go very light on these soft bits.

    I read somewhere on reddit that you should break in switches before lubing them. Does this apply to all switches? And does this apply to tactile switches? The only really talked about it towards linear switches

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Hello, World! It does apply to certain switches. One prime example is the NK Cream, where the POM on POM action requires a bit of wear down before you apply lube to it. Some also do this to MX blacks as well. However, most others actually can be lubed right away and still yields great results.

    Great video. Quick question, every tactile switch I've tried has this 'squeaking' noise when I slowly press down on it. It doesn't matter if the switch is lubed or not. • @RNGeeGee
      @RNGeeGee 3 роки тому

      I'm not nearly as experienced as Keybored, so take my comment with a grain of salt. Dielectric grease is recommended for only stabilizers due to its viscosity. If you apply it in a switch, it will most likely make it feel really mushy or sluggish.
      Good question though!

      NO! Do not lube with dielectric grease! It's so sticky and it'll ruin your switches! If you're looking for an alternative, you can use a mixture of superlube grease and superlube oil with PTFE. It creates a thin enough mix for you to use for switches.
