As a woman who wears the hijab, I want to say that the oppressive nature (i.e. only being able to wear black) is an attribute native to Middle Eastern Cultures not Islam. It really saddens me when I see governments take religion and turn it into an oppressive force to mold societies to their liking. I'm South Asian and my culture is full of colors and bright patterns, I can't even dream of being limited like that. I greatly admire Sadaf for what she's doing. Religion should be a choice, and a liberating one at that. I'm glad she's choosing to change for what she believes.

Would you say that thoughts of doubting your religion as being an oppressive force on the free will of the individual or is the individual expected to summit himself to the will of Allah?
When I Read through my translated Quran like the majority of Muslims do I see doubts in your faith being referenced by words like, disease, hypocrites, Musrif etc it seems that within the quran the word doubt is referenced to a disease of the heart. To me at least ridding ones self of religion is (thee) most liberating thing a person can do.
the majority of muslims don't read the Quran in their own language which they understand, they read it in arabic which is dumb, or they even don't read it... i know a lot of people who are calling themselves as Muslim, as a true muslim blah blah but then they never read the quran and talking about how peaceful islam is... I am turkish and the majority in Turkey is muslim, and turkish is nowhere related to arabic, these two cultures and languages are from different families no where related, we only share the same Religion, but the turkish people most of them never touched a translated (into turkish) quran, they only learn the arabic alphabet at a mosque and then read it in arabic ... and yeah they do not understand what they are reading these people are depended what their family taught them or what the Imam taughts them about the islam and most of the family members cherry pick the friendly things and ingore the bad words spread by islam like it never existed... and then there are the Imams who do the same ... I used to be a muslim too but atfer reading the translation of quran and the polical motivation of islam, i felt so disgusted now i am an agnostic person...and a culture even a religion is like a mirror it reflects the truth about how a country or the people are like... and most of the islamic countries like saudi arabia, iran, iraq, syria shows what the true islam is! killing gay people because they are authentic to them selves, forbidding women how they want to dress like, not giving them voting rights... think about that
I'm Iranian-American, born and raised in California and this really hit home for me. I've visited this beautiful country a few times and it's a completely different world not just economically but politically and fashion-wise. I had to wear a headscarf while I was there and it baffled me how much it can change your identity fashion-wise. This was really amazing to watch from the inside, so thank you for dedicating your time to spreading this interesting Iranian story to others outside of my culture.
I hoped to find out what it is like to be female in Iran. Instead I found out what it is like to be in the fashion industry in Iran. Not a bad story but not what the name suggests. I would like to see more about the lives of various groups since the revolution but hopefully about a larger demographic.
I am a iranian living in belgium. We left iran 15 years ago and i went there for a trip a month ago. i thought iran would be a dark country where people live in depression and difficulties. The reason for that is cuz the zionist media always wanted to give the bad view to iran and the iranians becuz of their political discussions. but when i went there a month ago my view on iran has changed 100%. The only thing i could say is that iranian people are the most happy and lovely people in the world. If you go there you will see evrywhere parties and people having fun.

In the fashion industry, as a woman... So...what is your problem again?! She is a woman telling her story, so the video does what it tells you it does. Not sure what you expected, smh.
Even if he'd visit, he wouldn't find out about how it is to be a woman there. Sure, Iran is a nice place and most people would probably be nice to him. But he's not a journalist and would probably not be able to interview women about how it is to be a woman there in order to get the answers he was hoping to find in this video. As mentioned in the interview, women's situation in Iran isn't spoken about without risk. Why would they risk their life to talk about their situation to a curious tourist? It makes no sense. Just touristing a country wouldn't give you a deeper understanding of the social dynamics of a people - especially as a man wondering about women issues that are taboo to talk about. That's what good about documentaries and interviews, you get the knowledge pre-packaged from people with the experience and expertise to research and examine (hopefully) factual data.
What Brian means is that the interview is not representative of what it's like to be female in Iran, but what it's like to be a female fashion designer in Iran. The title does make it sound like the video would be about females in Iran in general. As Brian said, it's not a bad video, but it's about a more specific situation than you'd expect based on the title alone.

If you watch fashion show in US or Europe or anywhere else around the world people are not wearing fashion show clothes. People in America and Canada usually wearing simple clothes when they are working during the week, even some parties you can see the same. I have no idea where do you live, I'm sure if you living in these countries you'll be agree. Even in Europe people are wearing simple nice clothes. I beliv these because I was in these countries and I'm living here.

Let’s not forget the US forcefully removed the prime minister Mossadegh for their purpose even thought he was working for democracy, which led to this more oppressive Iran. Just imagine how different Iran would be if the US didn’t intervene for their benefit.
they want to show iran as a repressive "regime" instead of the democracy it is. iranians wear whatever they want for the most part if youve actually went there. there are just norms for a code of dress you should abide by, which is covering your body. modesty is not a terrible thing to accomodate. iran isnt strict on enforcing clotheswear, this isnt saudi.

This is a great story honestly BUT as an Iranian woman I was expecting this to be a short documentary of the nearly painful life as a woman in Iran. The world deserves to know that. Us women in this country should tell the story not just fashion wise but all the other important aspects.

One day I was looking at some vintage magazines from my mother and I was shocked...Iran in her time was the real deal, modern women modern clothes they were more forward than the majority of the world. She said that here in Europe Iran was a very appreciated country, a little bit like how Americans look the French ;)
Sadly, Indonesia is heading into this direction. Today you couldn't walk around with short pants or sleeveless tops without people making remarks on your outfit. People who wear "high fashion clothes" are being called names such as snobs.
There are pressure to force people to wear modest dress and hijabs, even today's "fashionable hijabs" are being debated, if it's proper or not.
Even some people are against our traditional clothes for showing much skin. Once the Royal Family of Java were scolded on twitter by people for wearing revealing traditional Javanese clothes.
Such a shame our country are inspired by countries like Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia instead of Lebanon, Egypt or Turkey.

Hello, i'm indonesian here. I can't say that what you are writing about is wrong, but thats not totally true. You should see too that there are so many people in here are free to use some clothes that showing her skin. Indonesia has many race, religion and culture. I don't see any such a forces here to wear hijab. Many of my friends didn't use it, and we never judge her, many public figure too in here that are not using veil, and i see that they are just okay here. And the point is you should see indonesia in wide perspective.

I have two close friends who are muslims when I spent a month in an internship area. It was interesting to know how different they are yet, same acceptance. The other is a very religious one, wears the black thing or I call it ninja *sorry pls no offense*, while the other dress like a casual non muslim. I asked why? She said it is her personal choice.
Then, I asked again in what?
Then her friend who wears black said in a joke voice, "oh man, come on. Diversity.". I really didnt get what she meant and then minutes after, she whispered that I shouldnt further asked about it. Well, she told me in a tone that says to respect and accept the choice. I was just amazed by both of them, even different perception in same religion, they still have no prejudice about the other.

I am a 20 year old girl living in Pakistan, and i wear hijab. I have never been forced to wear hijab. My parents have only always educated me about whats right and wrong. The choice is mine. They send me to get education. I am a university students. Thousands of girls go to school colleges and universities and offices. I dress up. I go for shopping. I go to restaurant, parties, parks, picnics. Its just that the media is spreading negativity,hate and anger more than love, peace and positivity.
It's great that you made your own choice. I think many westerners focus on the minority as the majority on many aspects of Islamic culture. It's the media's fault really.

I have a friend in Iran... Shes a scientist and she wants to leave and be a researcher here in America, but Iran is so strict with its people, it would be easy for her to get a green card with her qualifications in the US, but nearly impossible for Iran to allow her to leave. They will place penalties on her family and even friends and coworkers if she tries to leave, and the cost to leave is astronomical. Iran keeps a terrible tight lease on its citizens, its scary to hear how other countries work.

I have been living in Europe, Sweden more then 17 years. Honestly Iranian have more open mind then Swedish at least. Difference is Iran is not democratic country and they are forced to follow Sharia Law outdoor. And Western paints Iranian as Black, Terrorist, religious country which is mostly wrong.

All her models were not wearing the sort of Iranian culture as what the lady was saying before the Islamic revolution there was high fashion which was also western. The religion of Islam allows people to express themselves through fabrics and colour. The sultans were one of the most elaborate clothed people. Luxurious gowns made from materials from the four corners of the world. The ottamans were externally creative in women's high fashion with modest gowns lengthening to a mile. Sadly history has been lost and classroom knowledge limits the truth on the real history. Ignorance is dangerous and can ruin your way of thinking.

Qualities of any respectable woman?
For me a respectable woman is one who is friendly and respectful to others, nothing else. She could have sex with a hundred of other people, or dress all in black, or a strong religious christian or muslima.
Woman I look up to are woman who are happy with their life, who search for the truth by logic, who are kind, respectful and open minded. And if they happen to like gangbangs and are happy with it and are friendly to others, open minded and search for the truth with logic than I look up to them.
That doesn't mean what makes them happy would make me happy though.
I can see it being beneficial to wear a hair and face covering in a country that is dusty and sandy, it protects against that environment. Otherwise, not so much.

Those who think that wearing short clothes that reveal a lot of skin is fashion are totally wrong. In fact longer clothes are not a barrier to fashion, rather it means more amount of cloth so designers have more possibility of creativity in such clothes.

In iran you *have to* wear a scarf regardless of your religion or beliefs. It's against the law not to wear it! All Iranian womens are so attractive, brave and adorable. They will get their right back one day. Western countries caused Islamic revolution of Iran to destroy Iran and Iranians as Iran was supposed to become one of the most poweful and industrial hub in the world. But as you see they can never and ever make Persians backward , all Iranians I met so far were so modern , smart, talented beyond the imagination . Most of the scientists and workers in NASA, Google, Microsoft ,.... are Iranians. I am sure one day reall Persia will rise again.

***** I don't care for an apology. Your are taking things out of context. The Quran isn't something your pick and chose you have to follow it through completely. Women do have a say in their life. They don't have to follow their husbands blindly. It really irks me how people are so ignorant and think they know what they are talking about. You left your religion, fine that's your life. Just because it didn't appeal to you doesn't mean it appeal to others. Islam does gives rights to women such as owing their own business and rights to divorce and so on. The hijab isn't forced unto women. Women can either wear or chose not to. Everyone has a choice in life. I'm done.
