The problem is that we do not have enough farmers in Malaysia. It takes a long time to produce one good farmer ( years to develop one good one). Many of the farmers are also aging.
Serdang University of Agriculture had changed its name to UPM(putra) in Selangor. Do you have other schools to produce agricultural students & graduates ? I can't even get a book of agriculture science in the bookshops or mega book stores. What happens ? Highlight to MOA & MOE ministry.

Well, learning from land allocation for paddy field in Sabah and Sarawak, and targeting such number of production of rice, all I can say what Malaysia have now a few of short-sighted ministers that shouldn't involve in politics in the first place.

This is not news but it's good for him to explain it in detail. We shifted to manufacturing in 90s from agriculture but this obviously comes at the expense of the local needs. Then we focused on palm oil for income (and competing with Indonesia) but again neglected food agriculture. No youngsters want to work on a paddy field nowadays as all of them have moved to cities. But I think this is where foreign workers and possibly refugees can help. They get a job and the county can secure more basuc food source. Theres definitely a need to balance between food agriculture and manufacturing.
Our neighbor countries diversify agriculture, development , manufacture, digital....but they never shut down one for another....all goes on consecutively....and in the years that rolled by, the quality keep improving.... What are we focused on primarily, religion.....
A country like USA that champion private enterprise has never given any subsidies on oil, sugar, chicken or petrol and never had a food shortage problem. Allow companies to hire and fire otherwise, workers will never work hard. No such thing as 3 months maternity leaves and tons of public holidays.
Most politicians don't understand market force. Market force is the best way to keep workers work hard and enterprising people and high-drive people open business and take risk. Instead. They allow those gerai-gerai dirtying the township, hardly paying any rent and not suppose to be businessman. They suppose to work hard in factory and make the country's industry strong. But Malay government like to manja the malays and allow them to just survive opening gerai-gerai.
The answers to these issues are simple, but the only thing that stands in the govt's way is their political will to make all these unpopular decisions. If the govt is stronger, it is gonna be way easier to implement these decisions. Political opponents are always seeking for ways to undermine EVERY SINGLE MOVE the govt does, even if deep down they know the govt is indeed doing the right thing. Hence, education is key here. We need smarter politicians from both sides and more importantly we need smarter rakyat to be able to understand unpopular decisions made by the govt, able to have fair judgments, and not having their opinions be easily exploited/manipulated/distorted/twisted by their favourite MPs.
I feel the subsidys are okay as long as it is not abused thru smuggling. By removing the subsidys, the costs are going to spiral. We can't compare the prices of rice or sugar between Msia and Spore or Msia and Thailand etc. If foreigners are benefitted, it can't be helped.
