    What do you think is a good reason to upgrade your gear?

      @@CurrenSheldon as a noob I believe once your gear limits your creativity it’s time for something that unleashes it.

      @@CurrenSheldon at the moment I think about buying a full frame camera. The sensor was never important for me. Shot a lot on Canon XL1, Blackmagic 2.5k and GH5. But maybe it is a good time to try something different. Maybe I'm getting an S1h and the kipon beveyes medium format focal reducer. Would be a nice experiment.

      I've heard the philosophy that you don't upgrade your gear until you encounter at least 3 scenarios in your work/professional career where it's needed. I didn't get a drone until after 3 different clients/creative projects I wished I had had it on. Some people more or less, but I think you need to KNOW you'll need it before you should make a big investment. But who am I kidding. Anytime anything is slightly on sale I immediately buy it.

    As a sound guy who’s spent decades in Sony menu nonsense all I can say is that learning the menus is a better solution than griping. Every manufacturer has user manuals online, Arri even has simulators online.

    • @CurrenSheldon
      @CurrenSheldon  2 місяці тому

      Agree and disagree. Yes, learn the tools - but that's also nearly impossible when there are a dozen different camera manufacturers out there. You usually use the same two or three over and over again. But also, camera manufacturers (especially Sony) need to learn to make intuitive menus. DJI can do it. Black Magic can do it. Arri can do it. No reason Sony and Fujifilm can't figure it out - at least to Canon's level, which I find fairly simple.

      @@CurrenSheldon Yeah, that’s too many systems to know by rote. But seriously, I have several dozen manuals downloaded onto my phone so I can look it up instead of hunting and pecking through bad menus. I wouldn’t call any camera OS or sound mixer/recorder “intuitive”, but I haven’t used DJI’s yet. That’s good to hear that DJI have a good system going on. In Sony’s case, my guess is that Sony have painted themselves into a corner hardware, firmware, and OS-wise by building on systems that may have been in use since the F900 or earlier for all we know. (I’m just hypothesizing.)

    I really dislike when people will pretend that gear doesn't matter, it certainly does for any good shooting experience. With how many features that are missing in key cameras, we really haven't hit this point where cameras are worthy for the next decade. This is partially why people are so prone to jumping to a new camera imo, we really don't get these crazy differences between generations, but enough of a difference to where it matters for serious use. The only recent camera to shatter this need for a new camera is the BMD 17K camera and their URSA 12K line. It's the one gripe I have about cameras, is that we don't have as many game changers as what BMD does.
    Building a good ecosystem is why I continue to upgrade my current rig with essentials (slowly, but with only what's necessary). Because if all I can get down to is just needing lens and body upgrades, it'll be real easy to swap to a new system without needing to spend a grand to switch. We live in a time where we have all these tools to make our lives easier, and I like making my life easier

    • @CurrenSheldon
      @CurrenSheldon  2 місяці тому +1

      Agree that gear really matters, just not for the reasons we always talk about (image quality, sharpness, dynamic range!, etc) - it's all about the ecosystem.

    The best is always to rent for the job..
    But For me if the gear makes me work faster and more efficient, does it makes it easy to get the image i like in post fast? Then im gonna get that gear..
    I do a lot of corporate and have two C70 cameras and it is easy to match and everthing fits both cameras.

    hi for a long trip wich would you recommend between the ZVE1 and the lumix S5ii? the sony has the fx3 sensor and better rolling shutter but the S5ii has a cooling fan and can't take better pictures
    the lumix has a crop at 60 fps but zve1 does overheat

    • @CurrenSheldon
      @CurrenSheldon  2 місяці тому +1

      I do not like Sony cameras for many reasons, so I would definitely get the Panasonic S5II. The S5II has worse rolling shutter and slightly less effective AF, but is better in every other way (image quality, build, audio, codecs, color, usability, menus, etc etc).

  • @mdenjoyer831
    @mdenjoyer831 2 місяці тому

    hi do you you know if rolling shutter/ readout speed matters in handheld movies? like when you want a good looking handheld shot that still looks dynamic is a faster readout speed better?
    thinking of the FX3 at 8ms vs the S5ii at 21ms but has better ibis

    • @CurrenSheldon
      @CurrenSheldon  2 місяці тому

      Depends on what type of shooting you are doing. As long as it's not fast paced whips and pans (like sports or action), anything around 20ms or lower will be just fine. I've shot a ton with cameras with rolling shutter between 20ms-25ms and have never had a shot totally ruined by rolling shutter.

      It’ll be exciting to see their range of AF Cine glass, but I’d say manual focusing is still here to stay. It’s still an invaluable skill on film sets that’s been around for decades

    I kinda call BS on color grading Sony footage vs Canon footage. Maybe you can make a video proving me wrong. But you can watch people grade both on UA-cam in the same amount of time.

    • @CurrenSheldon
      @CurrenSheldon  Місяць тому

      Agreed that a good colorist can make the Sonys look great as well, but since I don't want to spend my time color grading, I still find any other manufacturer much easier to look decent quickly. I would like to do a side-by-side of the C70/FX3/FX6/C80 etc - I have shot with all of these cameras but not in the same scenario but I always find the Canons (especially the C70) to have a much, much nicer image out of the box.
