Taiwan: William Lai elected president in historic election | BBC News

  • Опубліковано 12 січ 2024
  • The Democratic Progressive Party’s William Lai has been chosen as Taiwan's new president after his closest rival, the opposition Kuomintang, conceded defeat.
Lai has been labelled a “troublemaker” by China, which had warned people against voting for him because of his views on independence.
China claims self-ruled Taiwan as its own. While it has called for "peaceful reunification", it has also not ruled out the use of force.
Lai said he was "determined to safeguard Taiwan from continuing threat and intimidation from China" and would maintain the cross-strait status quo.

Honestly the best thing about this is both other candidates conceded when they saw the election results, no questioning results or lies. Democracy at its finest

That's not necessarily a sign of a healthy democracy though. In fact, the willingness to challenge and scrutinise institutions is an important part of democracy; if people didn't speak out when they believe a vote has been conducted unfairly, then who will stop it when a vote actually is conducted unfairly?

@@kapitankapital6580 If the opposition parties are either not serious opposition or forced to concede that’s a different story entirely, but recent history has been filled with election losers claiming the vote was rigged simply so they can avoid admitting they lost.
Opponents conceding because they have the humility to do so and trust the democratic institutions is a HUGE must for democracy to effectively work. But some leaders have an ego so big they can’t do that and choose domestic division & chaos out of selfishness

I am a 33-year-old Taiwanese, and I am deeply grateful for the support from the United States, Japan, European, Australia, and all democratic nations towards Taiwan. Our journey has been challenging, facing difficulties in international diplomacy and the economy. Not a single day, please note, "not a single day," goes by without being influenced by China's hegemony. However, we have made a firm decision to defend freedom and democracy, even if it means stepping onto the battlefield in the future.
As a retired paratrooper, I fearlessly stand ready to protect my homeland for the sake of our future generations in Taiwan. Thank you all for your support. I also hope that Taiwan, as an example, can continue to inspire positive change in countries around the world still under the influence of authoritarian rule. At the end, I genuinely appreciate your support. I love you all, I love democracy, and I love freedom.

@@andreaslukas2252 I wouldn't advocate autocracy, however the ideal of democracy absolutely struggles in most places and can barely be called democracy in a warmly positive sense - democracy can take many forms ranging from good to bad, and a lot of what is called democracy is extremely substandard (whips etc are completely undemocratic), for example you'd probably have better results filling parliament by lottery every few years like a jury service with the prior parliamentary ministers continuing on as advisors/assistants, although there are better ways than both.

Very proud of Taiwan having a mature democracy that shows people can vote for what they want. The fact that a third party candidate can receive a result that’s so close to one of the two major political parties is huge. Wish President Lai and Vice President Hsiao can listen to what people are really struggling with and tackling the domestic issues more and lead Taiwan forward.

We need highly motivated individuals who are willing to do more than just complain online. It's why I started my own local chapter of (ADV) "Allied Democracy Vanguard".
Every freedom loving country needs people willing to form Grassroots Organizations/Movements.
      1) To ensure that our politicians aren't putting the interests of the CCP above our own countries.
      2) To support human rights, and preserve freedom & democracy around the world; from the CCP-PLA's undue influences and harm.
      3) To elect politicians who will be on the right side of history.
      4) To develop tough on China legislation.
      5) To expose and weed out CCP corruption abroad.
      6) To foster the fraternity of NATO friendly Nations.
      7) To stop China stealing land & resources. And take them back.
      8) Require the CCP to pay reparations for the pandemic
      9) ....anything else necessary
This is a conversation we should all be having with each other, friends, and neighbors.

@anglohan5428I'm Hong Konger, but u r dum. I'm not Wumao. Firstly, the constitution of the republic of China never changed, therefore they still interpret Taiwan as a province of their China. Secondly, Tibetans literally don't want independence, it is all western propaganda. Hu Jintao improved their living conditions by so much. Thirdly, the Uyghurs also don't want independence, independent researches from Germany have concluded that no human rights violations have been found there. Lastly, HK doesn't want independence. It really triggers me when people talk about free HK during talks about free Taiwan, as the entire riots started because western media manipulated the population into not wanting justice. Basically, some guy murdered their girlfriend in Taiwan and fled to HK, and then HK was planning to extradite them to Taiwan to serve justice to criminals, but the western media convinced people to vandalise public property to protest this.
Bonus (proof I'm not wumao): I'm not satisfied the way Xi handled the economy (not elaborating for obvious reasons).

Much of the west would see Taiwan’s potential invasion as an existential threat for democracy everywhere and we support Taiwan in its fight against China’s aggression, oppression, and constant information warfare. Great to see the democratic election system work in Taiwan irrespective of China’s meddling and veiled threats. That’s how it was intended.

I'm delighted with the election result bcz it reflects the people's choice to maintain a certain distance from China on cross-trail issues, avoiding excessive closeness!

Trust me, any candidate who got selected as Taiwan's president will retain Taiwa's freedom and liberty. Not just William Lai. And over 60 percent of the citizens wish to have a Party Alternation

Only those who can fulfill the mission of the people are qualified to be president, not just those who are elected. God bless Taiwam.
