Love the content!!! I got here after hearing your podcast on this hunt. I took a deep dive into the NM harvest data for GMU 9. This is the Mt. Taylor herd. State of NM population estimate is 700-3500 Elk....25 Bulls:100 Cows/Calf ratio. Sustainable harvest is 40-100 bulls for the heard and 0 cows(makes sense as it sounds like the heard has been decimated). Crazy thing is.....417 Tags where issued through the state draw that where ES or MB(217 ES the rest MB). There were 2 cows reported killed through public draw (2 more than sustainable for the heard) and there were 53 bulls reported killed through public draw (half of sustainable harvest) Now comes the private land part of the unit. 177 Private land tags issued....68MB, 11A, 98ES. Out of these 177 tags, 98 bulls and 10 cows where reported killed. (By the way....this was with an average of only 64% of private tag holders reporting!!!!) At the end of the day....USO on the Floyd Lee potentially harvested more than what the state of NM claims as being sustainable to herd viability. Another interesting tidbit is private land tags (that reported...could be higher) had a 59% success rate. Draw tag holders had a whopping 12.9% success rate. Last note. in 2021 Floyd Lee Ranch had 115 land owner issued tags. All where (from what I can gather) 65 MB and 50 archery ES tags....All Ranch Only. Now they could have had other land owner tags provided under different owners or names... I just know that these 115 tags where issued for Floyd Lee and only mentioned 70,415 elk occupied acres. We all know Floyd Lee consist of way more than that. I just didn't have a way to break down the other 62 land owner tags. At any rate...It's a bunch of gobly gook if you just skim over it...but if you read it and take it in....It kinda makes your hunt down there make sooooo much more sense. Not to mention the elk numbers. basically you where hunting a decimated herd that was being corralled onto private land to become more decimated. I say "F" USO. My skin in this is I used to be stationed at Kirtland AFB in the early 90's .....GMU 9 was always 2 or 3 on our draw selection. Obviously (even back then) the Gila was king. But 9 was close to the base and most guys that got drawn there and could hunt.....killed good bulls.
These are the kinds of things that pisses NM hunters off. It is already difficult to draw a tag, but then you are constantly hearing that these outfitters are getting away with bullshit. They should not be allowed to lure in herds of elk to private land just so they can get at them with their tags. @@frankmorris4790 You know prior to the 1880's there was no concept of private land and public land...... Perhaps we should go back to that given that basically no ones driving cattle anymore.
@@Valscorn01 The concept of private land is one of the things that make the USA exceptional. Maybe not "driving" but grazing on the forest is still going on, and may it never end! No matter what you may hear from the bunny huggers running the Forest Circus at present.
I am so glad you have exposed the underhanded shenanigans practiced by shady outfitters! This same problem is wide-spread! The G&F offices need to pull the outfitter's license in addition to a hefty fines. Until that happens, they will continue to do what they do.
I hunted in unit 9 also and had that same experience with those ass holes and I will never go back I'm a resident of NM those people think they own all of Mount Taylor. Look at the ass holes place and you'll see elk on the property that is why you see the helicopter

I hunted here this year too.. I don't hunt close to the ranch but This ranch needs to lose land.. or "lease" rights.. maybe/hopefully prison time would be nice. They have decimated the elk population and it won't recover without assistance. This was my first year trying again hoping the last 8 years it would have recovered some... not at ALL. Are you still communicating with the warden? Or the office? How can we the viewers help here? Nothing will change unless we force it. That unit needs elk reintroduced. No reason it can't be a trophy unit.
It's really crazy to me that you guys are so pure hearted about public land. There are so many A-holes out there that do exactly this garbage with trying to act like they own land. I love that you know your rights and followed up with the game wardens.
I just watched the video of your New Mexico elk hunt on public land. And I must commend you for your attitude and the way you dealt with the people telling you to leave public land.. your attitude was always respectful even though they were in the wrong you are a credit to hunters everywhere and best of luck in all your hunting trips.
Great job, great vids. I would not say that you left NM empty handed, as you guys gained experience and valuable knowledge…and in the wake you shared much of that knowledge to others, thank you. I was 99% sure you were correct about the land leasing for grassing, was so glad that you called the warden and confirmed for all of our sake. Keep on, and thank you
We had our hunt destroyed by Floyd Lee's helicopter in 2012. Running his helicopter up and down the mountain herding elk onto his property. What an oofa!!
Being from NM I can honestly say that outfitters land owner’s and the game and fish are one the biggest problems with hunting in this state. Game and fish set aside tags for outfitters and ranchers more tags then are available to the common hunter in the draw. The preference is given to the rich. It’s pretty much impossible for me to get my 10 year old son permission to hunt on private land (if he even draws a tag) because I can’t pay the big bucks.
No ma'am, you're either misinformed or disingenuous - From the NM Game and Fish website : In accordance with state law, the drawing attempts to distribute a minimum of 84% of the licenses/permits for each hunt to New Mexico residents, 10% to residents and nonresidents who have contracted with an outfitter and 6% to nonresidents who haven't contracted with an outfitter
What a roller coaster of emotions. Way to stick at despite all the odds. Especially the above average odds that you all had and leaving it all on the mountain. Great series guys. Way to keep a humble helping heart too. Love it 🤘🏼💪🏼🏔
Great series, I enjoyed watching your ability to work through the problems that can plague an elk hunt. I haven't hunted NM for a few years but have had some great hunts there. Sorry to hear that USO is still up to their old tricks. I thought NM had delt with them, I guess not based on your report.
Great job keeping your cool but still getting the facts and sharing it with everyone! It was a great watch! The nerve of some people to take advantage of others is horrible.
You should’ve called the FAA on the copter! Harassing wildlife will get his license revoked! Great video! This made me want to continue elk hunting. I took this last year off for a new job, but maybe next season I’ll get to go back. I’m 0/8 on seasons. It’s hard to not quit when we are this bad at hunting, but one day maybe my hard work will pay off. Thanks for the inspiration!
@@pik2490 What came of that? is what I am asking. Just talking to them does not seem sufficient. If it was just one or two hunters ok fine. But 12? Who doesn’t call the game warden after the third guy in the middle of their property? Someone who knows they are wrong and haven’t been called on it.
@@pik2490 If you are going to claim that you have the rights to hunt on ground, you better be right. Not knowing for sure doesn’t excuse you from the ticket. If I go onto private land and I am not supposed to hunt on it, I am responsible for that and can get a ticket if I am caught. Should be the same way for them.
Awesome video! Thank you for keeping so much of the hardship footage. As far as those “outfitters ” go….we need to get this behavior out there. The state should not tolerate this behavior. Y’all did the right thing Bravo Zulu to y’all at Elk Fit!
The good the bad the ugly the amazing is what makes this UA-cam team and channel #1 to me thank you for taking the time to record this series for our viewing pleasure
Real challenges of elk hunting. This reminds me that though many of us focus on the physical aspect of training, the mental strength is just as important, if not more so. The ability to overcome all of the adversity is what makes ELK hunting truly unique and special! It's tough to train for the disappointment of the wind switching last minute, the competition of other hunters messing up your hunt (accidental or intentional), and that wondering in your mind when you just can't seem to find the elk! Anyway, what I'm saying is that remember that the mental toughness is part of what makes ELK hunting what it is! If it wasn't so hard, everyone would do it! Dan and team do a great job at staying positive and focused no matter what and that is what makes them more successful than most! Thanks for the REAL DEAL Elk adventure! Looking forward to whatever is next!
Amazing job of staying calm when you knew things didn't smell right! You guys worked your tails off to the bell AND stayed to try and finish what you'd started. Sadly, unless the State of New Mexico gets involved, I can't imagine a scenario where that landowner and outfitter stop harassing legitimate hunters. If there's any avenue for us (other hunters) to engage NM on this, please post it
You guys did an amazing job for all you had to deal with and you should be proud ! Thanks for sharing, and may God bless your future adventures with big game and non-existent outfitters!
A good friend of mine was hunting in NM and took a quartering away shot at a great 320" class bull. Just as he released his arrow, the bull wheeled and the arrow hit in the hind quarter! But, as luck would have it, the arrow severed the femoral artery! And that was it....
Great video guys. I was hunting unit 9 same time as you. Sept 15-19. Heard one bull bugle, and never saw a single elk for the 5 days I hunted. You’re right, it’s a hard unit now. In the early 2000’s there were elk everywhere in that unit. Then they just started getting hunted out. I always hunted it with a rifle. After I last hunted there probably 2012 I said I’d never go back. Then this year rolled around and thought I’d give it a try with a bow in the peak of the rut… and bust. Probably not putting in for that unit again. Sorry you had that experience in my home state. Most units aren’t like that with the landowners. But… I have heard those rumors about those guys also. I hope this video gets out to the right people and the game and fish are able to do something about it. Thank you again, God bless, and hunt safe.
I grew up on that Mountain and I remember the days when you would see herds of 200 during the archery season you hit it on the button they miss managed that unit with so many cow hunts It was great to see that country in your video great job on a great video.
Floyd Lee Ranch obviously have so.. much money and influence they can obviously do exactly as they like. Their grazing rights should be removed as a start!
When I hunted we had old style compounds had 60 targets different angles all thru woods with a running deer on cable. Stuck arrow in arrow at 100 yards twice still only took 30 yard shots at most to much can happen and not worth it to wound and not find
So crazy. What sucks is how many times you hear about stuff like this happening but the guilty party only gets a slap on the wrist. Sorry ya'll had a crap experience but appreciate everything you did to document the situation and bring it to light.
Man, that was a brutal experience. I appreciate that you shared it nonetheless. Bow hunting is not easy, a thousand different things have to go right for a successful hunt, and it's easy to take it for granted when things do go right. When you only share your successes, it only reinforces the self doubt that others like myself are failures. Everyone fails--it's how you respond to failure that separates real men from "wannabes."
Great video series and thanks for taking us along on your journey. Sorry about the bull but you all did everything you could and then some. Thanks again and can't wait for the next videos.
This is been some of y’all’s best videos, to see how hard y’all work and this makes me want to get into elk hunting , not only hunt but train to hunt. Thank y’all so much for what y’all do.
Wow great show, I just stumbled across your channel. And loving the content........ sucks you lost your bull especially after everything you guys went through. But hey with archery it is what it is. My wifes elk this year was at 69 yards mine was at 74 yards. .........we take the shots available.
Comparing what went wrong with that shot to a similar shot at 20 yards is quite a stretch. There is nothing wrong with admitting that probably wasn't a shot you should've taken. This is exactly why it doesn't matter how accurate you are at 60, 70, 80 yards plus. Great video as always and sorry you didn't find the bull.
Thanks for showing the bad ones guys. This year was my first year ever hunting. Without a hunting partner or father to teach me it’s been rough. After 3 long days of no sleep hunting. I ended up shooting and killing a doe. The shot was quartering away and my arrow went inside behind the back rib and up through the front shoulder. My mistake was chasing immediately after it. I had only ever hunted pheasants before and always thought you were supposed to put it out of its misery as soon as possible. After loosing the blood trail I didn’t give up on finding it and actually asked a 70+ year old lady and husband to help. Turns out it died around the corner and was in brush so thick that it was impossible to see until you stepped on it. Unfortunately, it was so hot that it was already decaying and being eaten by other animals and nothing was harvestable. We can’t control everything to make it perfect but we can control ourselves. I wanted to quit hunting but instead decided that next year I’m loosing weight so I won’t get tired as quickly, getting a better sleep system so I’ll be awake and alert when hunting instead of exhausted, and doing something every single week to learn a little bit more about being a better hunter. They are a living creature that we are killing. We owe them our utmost respect in life and in death.
Really appreciate showing the grind. We have issues with outfitters locally that do what they please all for the sake of money. Thank you for showing that not hunts end the way we want them but we do all that we can to give the animals the respect they deserve.
Rough circumstances and a tough hunt! Lessons learned and in the end the good deeds for the hikers will be remembered and talked about for years. That’s how you build a positive image of hunters into a possibly non hunting community! And it’s just the right thing to do. Great job guys!
Holy cow!!!! This one put me through the ringer!!!! Best episode yet! Can’t imagine how you feel, but thanks for getting out there working your ass off at me and taking us along with you!!!!
That was friggen funny Jake about your single life plans. 😂 That’s awesome you guys did your part to get some authorities in that area and hopefully there will be a stop to that, ridiculous. Looks like some awesome landscape but man, lots of challenges. Love the intensity of Jake at full draw and heart pumping breaths. Sweet content
Man this hunt was an interesting one that had me locked in from start to finish..the knowledge you all provided in this hunt was great…the information you provided about leases and that outfitters was something else
Great footage! Your honesty is admirable. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable is why you’ll continue to have followers here and real friends for life. Keep given er’
Awesome video guys. Sucks you didn't find him that is tough. Thanks for exposing Floyd Lee and there sketchy stuff they do. I don't hunt near there fence for that reason. I recognize a bunch of your spots you went and during that first hunt some of those are good spots. That fence and area you guys go into at the end to get your shot I recognize very well. Unit 9 is rough and you got to really work to find them.
God Bless #StayStrong..Gives me the Courage to Keep On Trying Been Hunting 2years And wont give up Thanks to Yall Good Group Men Father's Friend's Husband's 🤙
Well these people that falsely accused you of taking there camera should look at this video, and see how good you guys are. Giving water to people who needed it, next time they will find out before putting you out there. You and your guys and Tim and MFJJ are the best. Love the videos, I’m learning so much just by watching all you guys. I’m a newbie so thanks so much for the inspiration and knowledge that you guys all teach I believe in you. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Amazing footage, and it’s humbling to see the best in the world still have setbacks and failures. The big difference is you are willing to put your pride and heart on the line and share it with us. A lot of people would have deleted the footage. 🙌
This is real life hunting right here and especially on NM Public!! It doesn't get any realer than this! Most people would of quit and you guys remained relentless which is what it takes. These are the hunts that make you better in a weird way!! Bummer on the bull as that was good amount of blood I thought for sure artery! So sad what money has done to our sport! Great series! The Dan calling me daddy was great!! LMAO
Thank you for exposing this business and their criminal acts. Every hunter should boycott this place. You are giving a voice to those who would be intimided by them.
Awesome attitude all the way through both parts from getting “kicked off” to paying HUGE respect to the animals trying to find him!! Great content and always new things I’ve learned watching the videos! Great job guys!
Love it all right up through the last two shots. Bad shots happen but bad decisions to take shots are preventable. Can't say I wouldnt have tried one but the second one is one I would regret. Long shots and questionable shots make for more disasters for sure.
Great series. Appreciate the authenticity of things - not every hunt is successful. Also appreciate the reflection over "would I take the shot again". Had a similar situation hunting muley's this fall. Buck surprised me and I missed the close shot, but he checked up and offered a longer second shot. I took it, hit him back, and had to track him for a couple hours before putting him down. Thought about my decision to take a low probability shot the entire drive home. Still not sure what I would do if presented with the same scenario again. Keep the content coming!
Appreciate you guys showing all the footage. Doesn't always end how we want. Thanks for doing the right thing and helping out those hikers also. Too many people dont go out of their way to help others. Better luck on future adventures guys.
Love watching this series. I live in NM and never hunted unit 9 but I have heard a lot about this happening and seen the videos of the helicopter. I will be glad to suggest looking into unit 13. Love that unit. Got my bull on sep 3rd 2021.
We hunted (unit 9) 6 years ago. For 9days straight we were buzzed by the same helo at tree top level by local ranchers and outfitters, herding elk onto private land. The unit; lack of enforcement of regulation, miss management and blatant disregard for the North American wildlife model is an atrocity.
Great pair of videos. I feel the frustration of large landowners. I had the same experience in SE Washington close to the Oregon state lines. Landowner had his “security” person come up to where we were camping and advise that we were “trespassing”. We advised this person and showed him the boundaries. His reply was it just wasn’t showing up yet. State Land had not changed. #%*k - um.
Was there ever an update from the warden after he made contact with the floyd lee/uso hunt group about why they are posting public lands what was the outcome from that whole ordeal

That’s a great motivation speech you made at the end it make me definitely want to work hard this year and try my hardest to succeed in getting my first elk down Thanks man
Hunted with USO in 01, they had planes in the air when we were hunting. My guide was like what are they doing! Public land hunt, but had a TV hunter coming in to hunt same unit. so unfortunately nothing new. But doesn't seem to be any severe punishment for their behavior.
Great series Dan. For sure the kinda guys I want to be in camp with. Guys that put themselves second for the success of the entire group. Those are the kinda people that will test your physical limits to the max to help them succeed. Dean
So many great things happening in this episode, best one yet. Who's your daddy! Lol start the mom jokes. Exposing guys trying to stop people from accessing public land and paying it forward by helping those ladies out, and helping each other out. We don't always get the ending we want but that's why you guys put in the hard work to give yourselfs every chance to be successful. Great job gentlemen, great job! keep it up!
Awesome public land series! You guys did a great job showing the ups and downs of elk hunting. I appreciated you showing that not all things go your way and also , you didn't edit out when things go wrong. Keep up the good work, you inspire all of us to work harder at becoming better.

word
Great job keeping your cool but still getting the facts and sharing it with everyone! It was a great watch! The nerve of some people to take advantage of others is horrible.
Great post, thank you for the insight and letting us in on that great hunt. Sorry you couldn’t fill the cooler.
So nothing happened to the ranch or the outfitter? No fine, no licenses pulled, nothing?
He said that the game warden is going to talk to them.
This is the best kind of hunting video. Makes me wish I had some buddies like this to hunt with.
Awesome video. Great piece to end the video. Well said. Good luck next September.
You guys are legit!
Awesome and sobering at the same time.
Keep it up. You're on the right track.
Thanks so much!
You rock dan love your stuff and I watch everyday. Love the bow builds and sight reviews.
Awesome! Thank you!
Holy shyte... That was amazing!!!
Thanks for sharing!
Floyd Lee Ranch obviously have so.. much money and influence they can obviously do exactly as they like.
Their grazing rights should be removed as a start!
Thank you for posting the video, I enjoyed watching your adventure.
You did great buddy. We are all with you. Don’t feel bad. Go back to your great family , and get ready for the next adventure.
When I hunted we had old style compounds had 60 targets different angles all thru woods with a running deer on cable.
Stuck arrow in arrow at 100 yards twice still only took 30 yard shots at most to much can happen and not worth it to wound and not find
Thank you for showing how to 100% handle the situation. Great video.
Glad it was helpful!
Kudos boys!!! Great hunt , great additude. ALWAYS endeavor to persevere ! God bless .
The guy's at the gas stations in NM might know more than anything about the areas.
Great info. Bummer on the bull. All that blood. Thought for sure it was a sealed deal.
Great video series and thanks for taking us along on your journey. Sorry about the bull but you all did everything you could and then some. Thanks again and can't wait for the next videos.
Great Channel. Great people. Watch your low hanging fruit on barbed wire fence crossing🤣
My wifes elk this year was at 69 yards mine was at 74 yards. .........we take the shots available.
cant believe you ran into 3 old grannies in the wilderness
you did good
Comparing what went wrong with that shot to a similar shot at 20 yards is quite a stretch. There is nothing wrong with admitting that probably wasn't a shot you should've taken. This is exactly why it doesn't matter how accurate you are at 60, 70, 80 yards plus. Great video as always and sorry you didn't find the bull.
Wow that was a great entertaining video and great camera shots. Keep up the great work!
Amazing hunt and yes this is true back country hunting open range no high fences You simply got to love it Hunt on my brother
Good luck with that place- they have done that as far back as I can remember-
Did the game warden ever catch up with the Floyd Lee ranch guys? Any update on that situation?
Yea they kinda left that hanging in the Air didn't they
Really appreciate showing the grind.
😂😂 the single mom interview had my dying lol
This is the best thing on You Tube right now!!
I've witnessed the same land owner tactics down in NM Unit 21 on USFS land and roads.
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Awesome video but Dan walking in the forrest with a nocked arrow pointing at his jugular gives me anxiety😬
You are giving a voice to those who would be intimided by them.
sweet film!! really shows the truth about elk hunting
Hell of a video guys! Crazy to see that dude that ran you off of public land died not too long after this video!
Awesome attitude all the way through both parts from getting “kicked off” to paying HUGE respect to the animals trying to find him!! Great content and always new things I’ve learned watching the videos! Great job guys!
Great job guys. You guys both gave it your best. That is all that matters.
Love it all right up through the last two shots. Bad shots happen but bad decisions to take shots are preventable. Can't say I wouldnt have tried one but the second one is one I would regret. Long shots and questionable shots make for more disasters for sure.
Love your attitude!!!
Definitely got a new sub !!
Sorry you guys had to deal with that but super big thanks for sharing so other hunters know what to do in that situation.
Simply put, I wish I could have given 5 thumbs up!!!!!
Best one yet. We all can relate someway
Great job to all of you. Keep your head up Dan, it will all come together in due time. This was an awesome series.
I had a similar situation happen this year. So painful. Thanks for sharing, Elk shape guys.
Great hunt. Looked like so much fun, but that shot looked way back. He may have died but you would have tracked forever.
Great hunt and video guys. Can't wait to hear what happens next in the series!!!
#%*k - um.
Wow. Great hunt
Top notch big moves y'all made good stuff
Was there ever an update from the warden after he made contact with the floyd lee/uso hunt group about why they are posting public lands what was the outcome from that whole ordeal
tbd
Best channel for archery/hunting and real life shit hands down. This was an awesome series. I have to say tho, it was good to see you two building and nurturing the father son relationship! 😎😂🎯🏹 Here's to an epic 2022 season. Let's Get It...
That’s a great motivation speech you made at the end it make me definitely want to work hard this year and try my hardest to succeed in getting my first elk down
Thanks man
Hunted with USO in 01, they had planes in the air when we were hunting.
I couldn't wait for this video to drop. You guys did a phenomenal job on these!
I hunted with USO once. That was expensive lesson learned.
