  • The Stanford Chamber Chorale, under the direction of Stephen M. Sano performs Moses Hogan's arrangement of the traditional African American Spiritual, "The Battle of Jericho"
This performance was presented on 3 March, 2024 in Stanford University's Bing Concert Hall.
The master class Moses Hogan conducted with the Stanford Chamber Chorale a couple years before he passed away far too early in 2003, still guides the way the Chorale approaches his arrangements. In this particular arrangement, Moses stressed how the double "t" in the word "battle" in the tenor/bass ostinati needed to be over-emphasized and ultra-crisp. And he commented that his arrangements "should be approached the same way you approach Mozart" - i.e., the foundational elements of good choral singing, - intonation, diction, dynamics, shape of phrase, rhythmic acuity - should be approached with the same attitude and attention to detail that one uses when singing Mozart. It was an exciting and truly inspiring master class and we hope to honor him every time we engage with his marvelous arrangements and compositions.
