Its easy to come up with a riff, but its difficult to come up with a memorable one .
The rule of thumb for writing good riffs is: Once you think you are done writing the riff, put the guitar back and don't touch it until the next day. If you can't remember your riff the next day, it's not a good one.
john I had 2 great riffs last week... I thought, you know, I should record these, just in case. I didn't... I should have. :0 ( My memory sucks complete ASS nowadays.
Could not have said it better
@Blockstopmotion I consider it more of a warm up
Like 7 Nation Army 👈
The hardest part about creating a riff is deciding when the riff is done a complete. And not keep changing it multiple times. Great video bro.
🤣 I was thinking it.. You said it!! I've came up with some good ones, and lost em due to not knowing when to leave good enough alone.. Such is art though..
fr, i like creating super short Riffs then adding them together
exactly
I keep on playing riffs that sound like songs I’ve heard before how do I stop doing this
Nod7gaming I accidentally played of wolf and man one time
I do this ALL THE TIME!! First what I'll do is find the song that it sounds like and if it is super similar by ear I'll then look at people play it or lessons on how to play it and find out if it's different or not!! If it is very similar to the song what I'll do is maybe change the dynamics and add some pull offs/ hammer ons, or just do something small to change it. Because sometimes ill write a riff that I'll like but it sounds too much like something else and I don't wanna ditch it! So i change it, I don't ditch it though, just change it if that makes sense? Hope this helps man :)
@@airconditioningunit9777 I accidentally played War Pigs once. And I hadn't even actually learned that song yet. I was just playing around and that was what came out.
Play in a tuning that your preferred style doesn’t use. I like old heavy and thrash metal, so drop d or c would be good for me.
@@airconditioningunit9777 I accidentally played something unforgivably similar to The Way of Vikings by Amon Amarth
Stop making it looks so easy, that depresses the hell out of uncreative me
hahahaa so funny mate
Me too!
Just express yourself let go no one says whats wrong its objective
Riff = Led Zeppelin/Jimmy Page
Same
And black sabbath
Black sabbath has better riffs than Led Zeppelin
And deep purple and rainbow!
You know what, man? I dig your playing and everything, but I dig your attitude more than anything else. Your videos make me feel better just because of your pure joy of what’s happening.
agreed
I’ve played for 35 years and still found your approach to this topic extremely refreshing. When you start with a riff that sounds and feels good and play it enough, the fills just start to come out organically.
Starting with an interesting (yet simple) riff is like putting your antenna up, making you ready to receive the inspiration for a song or an addition to an arrangement
Shawn Stoner I agree with what u said. Think u start with something simple but interesting and kinda build off of that. I just started trying songwriting and have bout 3-5 full songs plus riffs.
Robert: plays cool legit riff "hahah i played that horribly"
Me: 😑am i a joke to you
Right!?
Dimebag - greatest riff maker ever, IMO. So much soul, and always chased the best tones.
Dimebag, Chuck Schuldiner, and Steffen Kummerer (butchered the name) are some great guitarists
@@lashedandscorned same with Jon nodtvidt
Crazy Train, Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, Sweet Emotion .. those pop into my head right away :)
Have a drink on me AC/DC one of the best riffs ever!
definetly metallica stuff. James Hetfield is just a riff-god for me :D
Steven YES I AGREE
That too he sings while playing such intricate riffs!!!!!!
For me the riff god is mikael akerfeldt from opeth. Every riff he writes is very tasty.
@@nhproductions1895 intricate? go look up some dave mustaine shit dude.
@@ali-kq2zw Haha. Not all james riffs are intricate i agree, but riffs like battery are tough to perform while singing.
This is awesome! Could you make a video about this: how to write a cool riff to accompany a vocal melody, if the melody is written first? Imagine that a singer showed you a new song idea (lyrics and melody) and you need to create a suitable guitar part for it. How would you approach it?
when someone says riff i think of black sabbath they have a ton of great ones
I freaking love their heavy riffs in Electric Funeral
Into the void too is a good riff
Walk by Pantera. This has to be the best lesson I've seen on youtube.
A riff - i cant help but think of more so classic rock stuff,
I've been waiting for a video like this for sooo long. Keep on rockin' in the free world
Heartbreaker by Led Zeppelin
He made a song just by sitting there!! RESPECT!! 🤘🤘🤘
Money for nothing- Mark Knopfler ❤️
I think of "come as you are" by Nirvana when are hear "riffs"
Weston Coffman this is exactly why I came to this vid cause I want to learn how to make my own memorable and creative riffs like that one
I think welcome to paradise green day
For me its Enter Sandman
@@miguelpereira9859 same
@@miguelpereira9859 enter sandman is such a fun riff
I feel like I'm watching Jack Black teaching the School of Rock lmao
Seek and destroy by Metallica
That's great thanks mate!
(looks at fret board and mind goes blank)
I’m 36 and been playing since I was 13. I just started to dive into songwriting about year ago. Thanks for the tips.
One of the biggest steps that anyone who is learning guitar is to appreciate and learn from rhythmic guitarist, they put the cornerstone for the melody that the lead is flying over.
Riff raff for me, first time i heard it i was just blown away
Nowadays I usually think of Clutch first when it comes to riffs. They have these really awesome groovy-bluesy-but still heavy riffs that hook you instantly. Good examples might be A Quick Death in Texas, In Walks Barbarella or The Regulator.
I’ve never heard of then, so I decided to go listen. Thanks for introducing me to an awesome band!
Yo Robert Baker! I'm trying out for a new band next week. I've never had to try out before lol, just been asked to join/start one. I'll be watching this video again before I leave so I don't forget how to jam when I get there.
The riff at the start of the video is just fucking badass
I thought i made an absolute amazing riff, made a song around it and everything. Then i realised it was literally station to station by david bowie and wanted to cry
Use that energy to make a sad song
iced earth - burning times is such a killer riff, also a lot of metallica riffs are awesome
First riff that pops into my mind - "Rock You like a hurricane", The Scorpions. Cheers! :-)
Wow this was posted long ago. I heard your basic "riff" and immediately thought of Aldo Nova "Fantasy". Your basic riff was darn close. It was epic in the day.
Personally, I think players want complex but listeners want melody and usually... simple. There is no "truth".
What I loved about Randy Rhoads, for example, was how he created melody but added something, a flavor, to his riffs. He didn't just play the same thing over and over. He added variation.
I think the "truth" can be any of it... complex, simple, varied... it just needs to connect. The "truth" is almost never applying all you got in one song. Its just finding something that connects.
For me, its the beat #1, melody #2, and its magic when it takes you on an emotional journey #3. Sometimes the journey is simple. Sometimes complex, but like Randy, its usually better with splashes of change that make it varied throughout while riding the same thought.
Again, all are right if you find a way to connect (for me... always driven by the beat with matching melody). AC/DC are the masters of beat with melody.
Can you make a video on how to get a great tone?! I have a Gibson Les Paul Studio EX and I feel like it's bottle-capped by my Fender Mustang PRESET amp. It doesn't work well with pedals I guess
breaking the law riff is the riff that comes to my mind when someone says riff
Electric Eye or Freewheel Burning if it's Judas Priest
3:57 in an monotone voice this man says "maybe its more melodic" and then plays the grooviest thing ive hear in my life
Anything from Clutch! Every song is completely riff driven! Awesome!
Iommi
Yeah Iommi is the riff god. He pave the way for so many bands and music styles 😀
Totally agree man! When i show the notification i instantly thought of some dark groovy doom shit that speaks to your soul. It might be just me but i find minor key riffs far more emotional.
The Paradise city verse riff
Slash definitely all of appetite for destruction
Bryce Mclaughlin yes. Afd is golden 🙌🏽
Yes!
Yesssss
The very reason why I got the Les Paul, despite being slightly biased to Fender!
Izzy stradlin afd
The hardest part of coming up with your own riff is to not rewrite an already existing one..sigh.
Song 2 will always has its place in my heart, riffs too good
This man reminds so much of Jack Black’s character in School of Rock and I love it
Literally the best video on riff making out there
is what he played in the beginning a riff he made, or an actual song? that was badass
When i hear riff i thing of Rock you like a hurricane
Between you and guitar zoom both top players and very easy to follow. Al
Sick opening riff!!!
Riff: Paradise City - Guns N’ Roses
Man when I first started guitar, this video helped out a shit ton. But I didn't understand a lot of it tho. But now coming back, I'm still learning something new.
I immediately thought of day tripper and I feel fine by the beatles,
Livin on the prayer
Very great indeed. I Always am trying to form great riffs for an intro and just generally throughout a song. Takes time and baby steps
Dudes got those AC/DC vibes! Killer playing and tone!
When I think of riffs I typically think of Pantera
On the run - Toto that riff is so good. Its by the god Steve Lukather
The spirit of radio riff!
2 minutes to midnight was one of the first metal songs I heard. I always loved the riff.
This is some of the most beautiful riffing I've ever heard
BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO. But seriously people if you really have a desire to learn, watch his earlier video on how to build riffs. IT IS THE LESSON YOU MUST HAVE! I just played this video twice because I love him and his playing but Ol’ boy is the REAL DEAL!
Youre such a good guitarist rob
"Are you ready to sing a song!" LOL - just when I thought that was the best the comment you went to "We are going all the way to ROCK AND ROLL!" hahaha - you have such a great attitude
Bryan Adams - Run to You - that's the riff your making up dude. I'm sure it's other songs to, but I heard that in my head as soon as you started playing it.
Dude I love your attitude and just pure joy doing what you do! Great video man 🙌🏼 🙌🏼 🎸
The trooper comes to mind when riff is mentioned. Awesome video!
Very helpful. Thanks
Perfect weapon-BVB. That intro riff is just🤤
I think of the main riff to Master of Puppets of course.
Kickstart my heart
That riff was so good sounding in the beginning
You're funny brother. Good personality. Rare in todays market.
Main riff from Metallica's Blackened
The outro of the Africa cover by Leo Moracchioli with Rabea Massaad. That riff.
Oh now that song is stuck in my head you know that's a riff from the 80s. Can't think of right now but you did it one better
Just the best channel on youtube!!!
Bro, exactly what I needed
When I think of a riff I think of the song DICE from the band, BAND-MAID. It's fast, aggressive and just overall AWESOME.
However, some more well known examples would be literally any/every AC/DC song, Sad but True/Enter Sandman from Metallica or Paradise City from Guns N' Roses
The first thing I think of when I hear “riff” is definitely anything from Led Zeppelin (Immigrant song, Kashmir or something like that).
The chorus to Alive by Pearl Jam popped in my head
*Stone Gossard (lead) version
Some of your videos are just crazy awesome just sitting around doing stuff like that good job love it..
This helped me so much! You gave me some wicked rock and metal ideas I can apply this to. Thank you for putting out this video!!!
Running with the Devil simplicity Memorable stays with ya all day ....
Feel Your Love, Back in Black, or Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love to me are just the quintessential riffs and what pops into my head when I hear riff
I think of riff raff from ac/dc🤘
One of my favorite riffs by far is “Speed Parade” by Slash, it’s got this Motley Crüe sound to it but has that Slash attitude
When I hear the word “Riff “ I think of Immigrant song by led zeppelin or unchained by Van Halen
Van Halen just died
I remember your how to write a riff and I loved the riff you played.. has that song ever got done?
whole lotta love
You're the best on youtube Robert. Keep up the great work. I really enjoyed this vid.
The first riffs that come to my mind are from Europe - Rock the Night and Open your heart 🎸
Soundgarden - Outshined is my one of my favorite riffs. Something with heavy bends.
Whole lotta love
Na na na by MCR. Such an amazing riff
Symphony X's riff in Masquerade. A beautiful riff that I would love to learn to play once I'm better.
Ahhh Chuck from the band called death is so inspirational for making heavy riffs... because you can steal some of his riffs and combine it with your style
Riff :metalica motley crue
AC/DC has awesome riffs.
instantly thought of im broken(pantera) , and you really got me by VH
night train-guns n roses
