  • Which Altra shoe is best? The NEW Torin 4.5 Plush? The "old" Torin 4.0, or is it the Escalante 2.0? Well, that depends, but I'll look at each and the shoes side by side to give you my opinion on the differences between them. I put the rubber to the road, quite literally, in this video to give you my perspective. For me personally, the winner is either the Escalante 2.0 or the Torin 4.0.
    As you can see in my earlier review of the Torin 4.5 Plush, there are some things that I think Altra got wrong on the update to the upper of this shoe. Judging from some recent reviews I've seen of this shoe, I am not the only one that feels this way.
    Links to my review of the Altra Torin 4.5 Plush and Escalante 2.0 can be found here:

    I am curious if you own or have run in any of these shoes and what your thoughts on them are???
    As a reminder, these shoes were purchased with my own money and no one will get the chance to see this video before I post it here for you. This my unbiased opinion of these shoes.

    Great information! I’ve been running in the Escalante 2 for a year now. Going to have to get a Torin 4.0 after watching your video!

    I ran almost all of my road running in the Escalante 1.5 last year including a marathon, recently got my first Torin that was the 4.0, and that shoe is my favorite shoe of all shoes I have run in. I thought it would be too tight when first trying it on, but it is just perfect, I think I could run in that shoe with no laces on. If I only had one shoe it would be Torin 4.0 hands down!

    Yes! Thanks for this review, unfortunately I am watching this after I already purchased Torin Plush 4.5. I agree with most everything you said, as a slight female runner, I prefer the Torin 4, but thought I would give the Plush 4.5 a try. Personally, I like the lockdown feature of the Torin 4 - maybe because I have narrow feet. My feet feel like they are swimming in the Plush 4.5, even tho they are the exact same size. At least the laces are shorter! And I agree, I don't really like the new thinner tongue, perhaps that is why the fit of the Plush 4.5 feels a bit different.

      Im hutch - Thanks for the comment. Nice to know I am not the only one who feels this way about the 4.5. As time has passed and I have almost 300 miles on the 4.5, it has broken in a bit and I like it more than I did initially, but not as much as I think I would have another shoe. 4.5 is definitely wider in the midfoot. Hope your running goes well!

    I've ran and own both the Torin 4 and the Plush 4.5. I love the plush after 60 miles in them. The only complaint I have is in the breathability

      Hi Jim - Thanks for comment. I'm at almost 150 miles in the 4.5 and I'm starting to adjust to them. Breathability is not great, but I usually run in the mornings here in Utah, so I haven't run into any real issues there. I could see this being a problem in hotter places.
      The problem with the tongue rubbing the front of my ankle has gone away, but the heel collar still digs in to my ankle bone (mostly on my left foot).
      Glad you are enjoying them and hope you found the review/comparison helpful!

      Totally agree. Have known some who love the shoe. Not every shoe will be great for every person. That being said, I know others who don’t love the shoe. Kofuzi being a popular one. Happy running 🙌

    If I understand correctly, Altra has stated they are doing plush only on the Torins from here on. If that is correct, in my opinion, that will be a sizable miscalculation as I believe the 4.0 mesh is a well balanced shoe. I've also paid attention to the Altra website reviews, which pretty much all seem to value the mesh over the plush. Great reviews. You've got a new subscriber.

      Chris Stepp Thanks for the comment Chris. That is interesting, though I think making just a plush version makes more sense and minimizes confusion. I didn’t love the updates on the 4.5, so we’ll have to see what shifts they make for the next version.

      I thought the non-plush version was going away too, then I heard that the Torin 4.0 would be a two year shoe, and not be updated or discontinued. I hope this last information is correct or my favorite of all the Altras I have is gone just when I discovered them.

      @@thedolenorway I had thought it odd that they were still on the website at full price.... with your info, it now makes sense. Now a two year shoe.... that's great! Thanks for the contribution.

      @@thedolenorway I spoke with an Altra rep and they said the 4.0 is not going to be updated and will eventually be phased out as they continue on with the plush version. The mesh on the 4.0 is far superior to the stiff knit on the 4.5. They should just take the upper of the 4.0 and the midsole stack of the plush and marry the two together. Its what they should have done from the start instead of making 2 different Torins which only confused people.

    • @thedolenorway

      @@TristWallace 😢 I haven't personally tried the 4.5 plush, but most people I have seen that have tried both prefer the 4.0 regular. I think splitting for the same model could be a good thing, keeping the same midsole and outsole, but having two options for uppers. When I tried the Timp 2.0 at the same time as the Olympus 4.0 the upper of the Olympus felt like home to my feet, as did the midsole of the Timp, but the upper made me fear a reoccurence of my Mortons neuroma. It feels wrong that you would have to go with the Olympus based on fit if the shoe you would choose otherwise is the Timp. The Timp with the fit of the Olympus would be a home run for me, as I'm sure the Olympus with the fit of the Timp would be a homerun for many others. The laces on the Olympus 4.0 are useless though, I need to find something else, struggling to tie them up properly.

    I can’t comment on the Torins (which my mate really wants me to try as he loves his 4.0) but I own Escalante 1.5, 2.0 and now the 2.5. Have to say, the Escalante 2.5 is the best of the breed. Similar great upper of the 1.5, but the far better heal cup of the 2.0. I will buy more pairs before they disappear (and I personally like the colourway of the 2.5 but would love the same black on black as my 1.5).

      Hi Ben - Thanks for the comment. Yeah, Altra seems to hit home runs with the Escalante line. Definitely their flagship shoe. I actually just got back from a run in my 2.0s and continue to love them. At your recommendation, I'll definitely check out the 2.5s.

    • @arnoldvales784

      @Ben Burley - how does the Escalante 2.5 feel compared to the 1.5? I sill have the Escalante 1. I wanted to get the 2.0 but I read reviews that it's not as cushioned as the original and the 1.5.

    • @bendburley
      @bendburley 4 роки тому +1

      Arnold Vales just gave them all a good ol squish test with my fingers, and the 2.5 are definitely as squishy as the 1.5 (more so but would be due to less kilometres on the new ones). 2.0 is quite noticeably stiffer. So if squish is your goal, then I’d go straight to the 2.5 😀

    • @arnoldvales784
      @arnoldvales784 4 роки тому +1

      @@bendburley yes! The squishier the better! What I noticed is that Altra is getting firmer with every version I purchase. My original Escalante actually feels much more cushioned than my Altra torin 4.0. Thank you so much for the immediate response! You gave me the confidence in getting the Escalante 2.5!

    I was a bit put off from what i heard about the upper on the torin 4.5. I love the 4 it is the most comfortable Altra i own (and it is the only brand i run in now). Might buy another 4 on sale instead of the 4.5 plush.
    Also i think the torin 4.5 and escalante 2.5 colorways look really dull. Im excited to get my olympus 4.0 though they look sick. So does the timp 2 which i already have. I can recomend them, they are like trail Torins. A bit stiffer on the upper for durabilitu of Course but really comfy still with 29mm quantic stack.
    Shout out from Sweden!

      Just got the Olympus 4.0, but haven't run in them yet, the Timp 2.0 felt really tight when I tried them on in the store. I ended up with the Olympus instead, mainly because I wanted a shoe to rotate in for longer trail runs to mix it up from the Superiors I run in. The Olympus was the shoe that would mix things up the most being a very different shoe while the Timp was kind of a Superior with some extra cushion. I would like the Timp with the Olympus upper though, my feet felt right at home in the Olympus, but a little crunched in the Timps.
      Across the border in Norway!

    Are you familiar with the brand Topo, also from USA and then especially the Ultrafly3? I like minimalist and zero-drop but have some achilles issues, so I’m looking around. Most alternative stuff is from the States

      Yes, I am. I think they are a great brand. I tried on some of their trail shoes, can’t remember the model, and found them very comfortable. I was impressed. Ultimately, I bought some Hokas, but I really respect them and think they are doing great things.

    Great video! I run in the Altra 4.0 and have loved it since I bought it. I recently purchased the 4.5 to rotate in for longer runs and I am a bit disappointed. The upper feels tight and shallow around the toe box pressing down onto the top of my foot. The knit is not breathable either. I noticed that my calves/Achilles were sore after running in the 4.5 even though I had been running in zero drop for about a year. This was odd to me. Maybe it has something to do with the shoe being less flexible?

    • @runslowtorunfast6528
      @runslowtorunfast6528  3 роки тому

      That is odd that you are experiencing more soreness in your calves. I'm not sure what would cause that. I definitely felt that the 4.5 was less breathable, which for me isn't a huge issue, but in hotter climates certainly could be for some. I found that I had enough room in the toe box. Thanks for the comment!

    Thanks, very useful. I'm still wondering which model to buy. I'm enjoying the Escalante Racer and I'd like shoes for longer runs. May I ask you what is the weight of the three shoes in your size? I wear US 12 and the standard weights are often misleading (I like light shoes :))

    • @runslowtorunfast6528
      @runslowtorunfast6528  4 роки тому

      Hi Luigi - I don't know the shoe weights in each size. I need to buy a scale and when I get one I'll update you. My guess is that the Torin 4.0 and 4.5 Plush are in the 10.5 - 11 ounce range for your size (12). I also love light shoes. Thanks for the comment!

    • @thedolenorway
      @thedolenorway 4 роки тому

      I'm probably too late, but I have and enjoy the Escalante Racers as well, I would say the Torin 4.0 would complement them very well, they are a lot more cushy but in a responsive way. The fit is quite similar to the racers size wise, but again more cushy. An alternative could be the Paradigm, but I don't know if I will buy the Paradigm again after trying the Torin. Not because the Paradigm is a bad shoe, but the Torin is just such a workhorse of a shoe for me.
