    Thanks so much for mentioning insole sizing is only one part of the shoe size equation! We need to spread the word. :)

    Good review! I'm an Escalante fan since the beginning, got them for both running and casual. The foam does break down relatively fast, that's right, but then they make for great casual shoes. I think the laces of the Escalante 3 are a bit on the short side, can barely lay a firm knot without locking my feet in too tight. However, they are my go to race shoes and runners for distances over 10k. For the rest I train in Xero HFS barefoot shoes to get my feet as strong as possible.

    • @RuminatingBroccoli
      @RuminatingBroccoli Рік тому +1

      Could you elaborate what you mean by the foam breaking down? I have run 240+km on my new Escalante 3s (bought in early July). I'm not used to running in shoes with cushioning (previously ran in VFF KSO Evos and V-Runs). The Escalante 3s are my first venture into cushioned shoes.
      I've recently bought a pair of Xero HFS II coz of the recent new release (great discount). Planning for my shoe rotation to be VFF V-Runs/HFS II for slower runs to build feet strength and Escalante 3s for long runs or faster sessions. I've ran one HM in the Escalante 3s, and have plan to use them for future HMs. That's a lot of additional info. Lol.

    Great video. I have both shoes and enjoy both. I weigh 190 pounds and prefer the Torin for longer runs. I think the Escalante is a great shoe overall and I enjoy wearing it as a casual shoe

    I agree, the Esky is Altra for me. All of the other models I own do have likeable qualities. They keep runs interesting but the Esky is always the measure by which they are judged. Excellent reviews, always and I hope Altra appreciate, support and promote your chan into the future. Best wishes for 2023 mate

    Thanks for the review. I voted for this one. Great comparison as always. I used the Paradigms for my long runs and Escalante Racer for speed or short runs (or where I want to have fun and pick things up a bit). Have been wondering if the Torin would be good for me when my Paradigms finally die. Was good to see your thoughts on them. Not sure I like the higher heel but the tongue is probably the biggest dealbreaker for me.

    The Torin 6 has a strip across the toes inside that digs into my little toe, which is a shame as I like them apart from that.
    I use Topo Athlitic shoes because they fit better, have tried a few Altra's but never got on with them for various reasons and also was disappointed that they are too narrow when they are supposed to be wide, the Topo seem to have a better foot shape for my hobbit feet.

    Thanks for the video. Often the outsole material is missed in shoe reviews so it would be good to get detailed comments in all videos on that. Because if you invest in only one pair and they don’t do well in rain then you are kinda stumped. So are they the same and what is the traction and grip like for both?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  Рік тому +1

      That's for the feedback! Traction seems better on the Torin IMHO. There's a little more rubber. Both are OK, but unfortunately Altra isn't famous for their traction in wet conditions :-( Here in northern Germany it seems to rain more than not during the winter. As long as I don't run on anything slick or smooth while it rains, it's OK. Running on wet roads and footpaths, you'll have good traction.

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  Рік тому +2

      I prefer using my Vanish Tempos for faster workouts. The rocker shape helps me keep my cadence and pace up.
      I like using the Escalante as a daily trainer or when I feel my feet need a strength workout after running in higher stacked shoes for too long.
      They look absolutely fine after 330km, but I do feel a slight loss in bounce.
      Due to the upper soaking up water, I'm currently not running in them much because it's pretty wet here in Germany at the moment.

    Question, I tried on the Escalante‘s in the store, and it felt like more than what they advertised like more than the 24 today measure their stack height because different companies do it differently with or without the insole I’m just trying to figure out because usually 24 is really good for me and I saw my Byam butt. They felt more when I was in the store now that I could’ve been because it is zero drop.

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  11 місяців тому +1

      Hey, unlike most brands, Altra calculates the stack height including the insoles. Generally speaking, the insoles Altra usually uses are 5mm thick.

    the upper of the Escalante 3 unfortunately does not fit my feet. I had the strange bumps you mentioned about the Torin in a terrible way in the escalantes (went back to the 2.5 which are perfect for me). long story short. I need a new pair of Altras for my long runs. would you go with the Torin 6 or maybe go for the Rivera 3 (didn't like the rivera 2 though)?

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  Рік тому +1

      I personally didn't like the Rivera 1 or 2 that much, and have decided to not test the 3 (yet). Simply because I don't think they'll fit in my shoe rotation at the moment.
      The Torin does have more space than the Rivera. My feet tend to swell up during longer runs, so I need that extra space. Or you can take out the insoles to create a little more space.

      PS regarding Escalante and foot cramps: did my longrun today in the Escalantes (despite knowing it's not a good idea from experiences in the past) even though I should have strong feet from 2 years running zero drop and in addition to that countless hours in barfoot shoes, after 90min my feet still got beaten up.

  • @rouzah9419
    @rouzah9419 Рік тому

    How much is the sole of the Escalante stiffer than the other shoes, like the Torin 6? I guess it must be noticeable during running. It's kinda unnatural - but that is coming from a Vibram wearing runner. Is the Escalante only Standard fit? I need either Original or Wide fit.

    • @TDMiller
      @TDMiller  Рік тому +2

      Escalante only comes in standard, I'm afraid. The Escalante does feel slightly stiffer than the Torin, and you'll be working your feet and legs a little harder to get the same kind of rebound as the Torin. I find the EgoMax in the Torins to be very bouncy in comparison to the Ego midsole of the Escalante. And the other shoes that have the regular Ego midsole, like the Rivera and Outroad, seem to be less stiff despite the extra few mm stack.
      The Escalante Racer is categorised as a standard fit, but I have heard people say they consider them wider than the regular.

      @@TDMiller Ey thanks for your reply. I just got the Lone Peak 6 delivered and me being used to Vibrams i got shocked how stiff the sole is, and how much arch support it has. One question: The LP6 has an incredibly stiff sole. How much more flexible are the soles of the street models, like the Torin 6 compared to the LP6?
      ps: Does the Torin 6 have arch support? The LP6 unfortunately does.
