Cracking a Large Missouri Geode

- We have a lot of people comment on the fact that we are not wearing safety glasses in this video. 1. We have the towel on it to keep debris from flying. 2. This video was taken in 2014 when we were just starting to take videos and post them online. We were very new at that time and have since learned that wearing safety glasses and leaving the geode uncovered is a much better way to crack them. We definitely believe that safety comes first, please understand that we were still in the learning stages when this video was posted. Jesus man, put a longer handle on that thing. Lol
Something to consider...
Love that druzy sparkle!!!
Yea it is really pretty 😃
Thank you!

the feeling of anticipation when it finally POP'S and then you look inside to see some thing that no one has ever seen before, hoping fot it to be the mother lode of fortune. keep cracking them, one day you will find your fortune.
We've cracked several recently that are amazing. Be sure to check out our newer videos!
very beautiful geode.. good work guys
thanks!
I came for the geode itself, but now I find myself interested in the device.
It looks like a soil pipe snapper.
Yes it is
Pipe vice
Yah, me too!
....all this time I thought they r using saw/grinder to cut or open a geode..
=(
@Lucas Stidman where in Missouri can we find the geodes? On our property in the far Northeast corner. Keokuk Geodes can be found in Northeast Missouri, Southeast Iowa, and Western Central Illinois.
Biggest geode I’ve ever seen. And badass rock splitting apparatus👍🇺🇸
Thanks for watching! Check out our Grandpa Geode video to see a 56-57 lb enhydro we recently opened with the same machine. ua-cam.com/video/hQr-iDNQ5Wc/v-deo.html

Cast iron pipe cutter
Looks cool!! Use shorter handles so it takes more work!
Thanks for the tip. Longer handles tend to break. Thanks for watching and rock on!
Oh my goodness it's beautiful
thanks!
¡¡¡This video rocks!!!
Thanks!
What is the name of the tool you are using? I've got a large one I'd like to figure out how to crack it open. Thanks. God bless!
It is a cast iron pipe cutter, sometimes you can rent them from a home improvement store otherwise you can call your local rock and mineral club and see if they know where you can find one or your local plumber. Thanks for watching!
woah I did not know we had them in Missouri :0 I need to go look for some
Yés go L
we dig them up at one of four places we have. the Geodes for the most part are based on whats inside them for minerals over size.

This vid. Is as interesting as watching water dry
Thanks for watching
My geode is easily over 100lbs and just a bit bigger then that one
I love geodes 'cuz they open like a walnut
But the insides aren't as tasty 😂
Thanks for watching!
4:42 you are welcome.
Thanks!
Love the shirt
thanks!
they killed geodude.
cjoemex lol
cjoemex more then that......fucking ablitteradted him
Vinny lacovino You sure knew how to spell "fucking" but not "obliterated"???? Where did you learn YOUR English? And it's "THAN" not "THEN".
I know geodude he’s not dead and he’s not dead he cracks them on fb
@@cheryl8280 ebonics
I always believed that they were sawed in half. Wowee opening definitely pleasantly surprised. ❤️
Thanks! We typically do not use a saw because it would cut through any internal mineral extras.
That kind of looks like outside work to me
Thank ya for looking
Now I wanna go Geode Hunting
I don't blame you!
It is a cast iron pipe cutter.
and they are a bunch of hacks
How much do they cost? And where can you buy them?
We sell mostly through our Facebook page or our brick and mortar store. They vary in cost depending on size and internal minerals. Thanks for watching! Our Facebook page is @fabulouskeokukgeodes
Other than a doorstop, what good are they?
People use them for many different things. Mostly interior decorating or adding to their rock and mineral collection. Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out our newer videos.
Ok. Thanks.
Wowzer.. beauty hiding inside!! When you sell them... what do they use them for?? Jewelry?? Or?? I know nothing???
People typically use them for decoration or art
Been hoping to just find a geode one day , I know and have not really studied how to find one , was hoping a strike of luck one day lol , guess I’m going to have to read a little bit more , I know people who can walk in the woods and just find one somehow idk how the heck they do it
If you watch our video titled " fabulous keokuk geode digging" you will see how we find our geodes. In this area people do find them on the surface, near water usually, but ours are actually deep in the earth.
Walk a creek in the woods. Look in the muddy creek banks.
That is how a lot of geodes are found in our area. We've even been known to find a few that way ourselves. Thanks for checking out our channel!
My back hurts just watching this
It can be a back breaking job. But sooo worth the results! We videoed 3 hours of backbreaking work last night that will be uploaded within a few days.
So this is what the trailer park boys have been up to! Seriously though, nice video. Very informative!
Thank you!
Love that shirt great video... Only one way Jesus👍👍
Thank you!
I had no idea we had geodes that big around here tbh 👀 then again I havent really looked into that in years.
Where are your goggles? This is making my eyes wince! At least there was a cloth cover.
They covered it with a towel?
Why do u care if they are or not ?
@@coldfire2935 I care about people doing unsafe stuff that could blind them. I have macular degeneration and I am slowly going blind, so the loss of eyesight is losing something precious.
This video was made when we first started filming geode openings. At the time we used a towel to keep any small pieces from hitting us. If you check out our newer videos you will notice we now wear goggles. Thanks for watching!
And now I'm sad because I live in Cleveland! 😔😔😔
We've been to shows there
My advice ??? Skip to the 3 minute mark for 10 seconds... Then to the 5 minute and watch from there ... won't miss nothing ...
Yes, when we posted this video we were very new to posting videos online and did not know about trimming the video to make it more viewer friendly. Thanks!
Something that big deserves a nice clean cut I'd think. Couldn't cha drop a few buck at the local equipment rental and get yourself a large size cement saw and make your cut with that. You could probably do it right there in the parking lot and rent the dadgum thing for the shortest time they'll let you - half an hour you'll be done and down the road with a nice proper cut instead of that broken look. But hell, WTF do I know? I suppose its all about what matters enough for you to take the effort.... And maybe after you seen hundreds or even more of the things there nothing special left about em at all.
Some people prefer the natural look and some prefer the cut and polished look. We typically crack because we don't want to saw through a nice inclusion.
If you watch this video it will show why we do not typically saw through our geodes ua-cam.com/video/_mQjFy-OMAI/v-deo.html
With all the hollow space, a cut would be useless.
All that work for $280.
It is a lot of work
using a soil pipe cutter is tough going even if your just cutting cast iron soil pipe
it makes this job much easier though!
OMG I looove crystals...Cracking geodes are so much exciting
Thanks for watching
WOW that's cool inside, always wondered how they did that
Thank you! We have 3 machines of various sizes that make the job fairly quick and easy
If you only want to see what's in it skip to 6:15.
Thanks! Check out some of our newer videos for faster cracking times :-)
awesome
Thanks!
Why don't you try making a "stand" (like a short table) with a car-jack-style riser: you could even build it with a channel or rut in the top for the chain to lie in. Lay the chain in the rut, hoist the large geode onto the table -- jack the table surface up or down to the easier height to work with. Secure the chain, tighten the chain, pop -- and the geode halves (if you're lucky) fall onto their backs on the lift-table. It would be small enough to chuck in the back of your truck when you go to shows or to store in the corner of the room... You could even make the "table" top a wide-top bowl-ish shape? Use a watering dish for cows?
@1950archangel that sounds like a nice set up. Would definitely be easier on the body! Unfortunately there are so many other things packed when I go to a show that I don't have room to pack this with a stand.
all you need is a ball-peen hammer. I live in Maine where we have a ton of these
We prefer the clean crack that the cast iron pipe cutter provides but a lot of people do use hammers and chisels
Guys, you had 5minutee of grabbage, Everyone start at 5minutes. Don't put us though all the bull next time. All we want is the big crack!!!!!!
If you would notice this video is SEVERAL years old from when we first started. We have learned a lot since then. If you would like to see shorter videos please check out our newer videos that "save you from all the bull". Thanks for watching!
Where can someone purchase unbroken super sized geodes like this ? Are there wholesalers in the MO/KY areas?
We do not wholesale unopened geodes but we do sell unopen large geodes. All our contact information can be found at www.fabulouskeokukgeodes.com
Awesome shirt
Thanks!
Thank u
Thanks for watching!!
One time I open a Geo and it came out with a lot of green slime
What's the reason for cracking these an not cutting with some kind of diamond blade. As u can probably tell I'm new to this 😄😄
We don't typically cut our geodes because of the large calcite formations found inside them. A saw would destroy the calcite if it were to cut through it. Many of our newer videos show the large calcite formations found in these. Thanks for watching!
only $280.00, i was thinking like a $1000.00 maybe more. sweet looking rocks. keep it up!!!
Thanks! Check out our newer videos to see some of the beauties we have found recently. Some of those have several thousand dollar price tags.
why wouldn’t you just use a concrete saw with diamond blade? you can control the depth of cut pretty easily and i would i imagine it would look nice and clean on the edges...
We use a saw sometimes. Usually we prefer cracking these geodes because they have internal minerals that cutting with a saw would destroy. We have some saw cutting videos. I'll have to see if I can get one uploaded.
Skip to 5:00 for the pop.
YouStupidBunny thanks
YouStupidBunny isn't

BANT3R 3 seconds is it really an issue...it’s closer than 5 min.
I'm from South Dakota, we had gravel hauled in and I found an orange agate 2"x1" could u tell me the value of it???
I'm sorry, I don't know much about that. You might try to contact your local rock and mineral club and see if they have any ideas.
what you need to do is cut that handle off on the crank that sticks up weld it back on closer to the middle so then you can slide a metal pipe over the end to do the last few turns a ton easier.
Don't ya thinks if you are putting that much pressure on this item. You would wear safety glasses and a face shield.
We have started wearing safety glasses. Thank you for your concern!
Why not cut them open with a saw or cutting wheel? Don't some of them shatter instead of breaking into two halves?!
They don't typically shatter, usually they break into two pieces. We don't saw cut the ones from our property because they tend to have large calcites in them that would be ruined if we cut through them
What is the name of the tool you used to crack it open? I appreciate you help.
Robert reichelt Its a castiron pip cutter
Called a chase cutter
Chase cutter or chain type copper cutter is different than this. this is for cast iron soil pipe.
it is a cast iron pipe cutter
I recognize it from using one at work. Pipefitter!
Very beautiful. I would love to find some of these.
Thank you!
Why not cut it with a rock saw or concrete saw? I use a tile saw for the small ones as well, lots of dust but a really clean cut thats easy to polish. Just curious.
Our geodes tend to have a lot of calcite inside them and if we cut them, we cut the calcite off and it is not repairable. If we crack them and the calcite breaks it can be glued back in. We typically do our cutting after the geode is cracked open or if we have one we can see the inside of. Thanks for watching! Be sure to check out our newer videos to see more of the amazing beauties we have found.
Good adventure hard job beautiful piece but is loosing time no body pays a cent for it!
Thank you. We actually sell our geodes in person and online. Thanks for watching!
Just wondering if you ever considered having your geodes carbon date tested and had someone collect the water samples inside to search for ancient bacteria or cells present in the water rather than just allowing the water to hit the floor. There very well might be something in that water that has been in that time capsule. I would at least check with a university to see if anyone would care to collect a sample. Who knows what you might actually have found that someone might be interested in. Just a thought. Might be more than just a pretty rock.
Several people have tested the water. We have tried unsuccessfully to get the results of the testing. There have been universities test it within the last year but we haven't heard the results.
@@WoodiesRockShop I would be asking them about their findings so you have some interesting information to share on a video.

Looks a bit like crystallised ginger
hmmm kind of ironic having a christ fellowship shirt on while cracking a geode that could have taken a million years or more to make.
Opening up the beautiful creation God has made and sharing it with the world.
If you do not crack it,you can't see the beauty of it. You crack walnuts don't you? 'Pig' suits you, always bitching, I bet.

hi there, I have a 59inch diameter geode unopened how much is something like this worth?
Scott Drummond it depends on what kind of geode it is and whether or not it's hollow
for it's size of say hollow. type ? others are quartz/ calcite
Scott Drummond where is it from?
Short n Sweet it's from pike county Illinois
Scott Drummond it is really hard to say without seeing it. I may not be the best at saying what it would be worth because I don't deal with those geodes much. it's also kind of hard to say how much it would be worth with it being so large. sorry I'm not more help
I guess that would make you a rock hound nice one!

How do we know we found one? Where my mom is from originally is from the sierra madre in Mexico. Everywhere you walk you see super shiny stones like glass, like this stone. Since when we visit we travel by bus, there out of the way to bring some stuff back
this formation of geode is only found in the area where Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri meet.
Why not saw it in half?
We do saw some of them in half. Some people prefer the natural look of the cracked geodes, it also depends on the size and what may be inside the geode. A lot of our geodes have growth inside them that we would destroy if we sawed them. You can check out more of what we have on our website www.fabulouskeokukgeodes.com and also on our facebook page which can be found on our website. Thanks for your question!
