Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 вер 2024
- This week we're looking at Master Blaster (Jammin') by Stevie Wonder and the tricky instrumental break in which Nate Watts joins the band in doubling that cool Pentatonic line.
I'm going to break down the line and give you some tips on how to best play the notes cleanly and with as few position shifts as possible!

Hey cuz you jamming hard thanks, can you do a lesson on boogie on reggae woman
Epic! Thx mark! Can you maybey do a lesson anesthesia pulling theet?
One of my favorite lines is Sir Duke, would like a lesson about this
👍
Mark’s already cut that video - Sir Duke The MUST KNOW bass section, 2 years ago (I’ve been working with it since!)
I like the way Mark includes the theory, explains the positions, shows the score. A proper education rather than some “teachers’ who simply think that showing you notes is adequate. With scales, positions, rhythms learnt I can use this in so many other ways. Great lesson.
Amazing video Mark. Very well structured and presented, would love to hear some Frank Zappa tunes!
Agreed - some of the Tom Fowler parts are superb - St Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast/Father O'Blivion would be a treat.
Tim Gillespie Both very hard tracks, or keep it greasy!
Zappa is my biggest musical hero (I wrote a 200 page book on him as a thesis for my degree). Will DEFINITELY be doing some riffs soon

TalkingBass - Online Bass Lessons I want to see that book lol!
Seriously there are people like me that are into that type of thing.
I've always played this with different fingering positions from what you've shown here.
There are some tricky position shifts so helpful to show this way. Eventually people play what is comfortable for them.
This way will make it easier to learn for newer players.
Song suggestion, Higher Ground. Most know this for Flea and The RHCP'S cover. Cheers
yo if you could break down Boogie on Reggae Woman from Fulfillingness' First Finale i would love you 4ever. I mean I already do but this breakdown would solidify you as the G.O.A.T. youtube bassist
"Do I Do" has a cool bass part if you haven't done it already!
Hey mark, one thing i’ve been having some trouble with is fluently moving my thumb on the picking hand between anchoring positions(pickup, d sting, a string etc). A lesson focusing on that would be greatly appreciated.
Stevie Wonders Hirer Ground Please 🙏🏽👏🏽🤟🏽
How about covering "Part Time Lover"?
Brilliant lesson, thanks, Mark. Would love a tutorial (or two) for 'do I do'.
"I Was Made to Love Her" from "Live at The Talk of The Town" 1970 - Michael Henderson on bass is killing on that album. No wonder Miles Davis nicked him off Stevie...
Do I Do
Amazing what can be done with just the minor pentatonic scale and it's relative major scale.I'm sure many songs are based around them only.Tons of interesting improvisations can also be pulled from them.Thank you for a great lesson.
ALWAYS the best #BASS lessons on the entire internet!!! Thank you, Mr. Smith!!
Mark, thanks again for taking the time to educate us and keep things interesting with the material, and songs like this with tricky rhythms!!!
Can’t go wrong with Stevie apart from that dreadful I just called thing! Would like to see Sir duke or I ain’t gonna stand for it 👍
He has already dun a lesson on Sir Duke. Just do a search for it. He did a lesson on the unison melody part.
I see that you want to give a name to the sound, like me. You use a lot of energy...if you say "C on the 3 Fret, on A string" with the tablanote = C3 or C8 and it's done for high C , C5 and C10. C15 ...... we don' t have " that " many notes finally Thank you for your work EmaB from Paris
Nice video Mark
I think Sir Duke will be nice to play
Great lesson, it would be nice if you use the number system
sorry, i 'm a beginner bassist and i can't seem to figure out from which string/ fret till which other fret goes the slide in the third line of this video..
This is awesome, can you do Rocket Love
Yo, I was just listening to this yesterday. The universe wants me to learn this song
That's a great song!!!
Always, always a plesure 2 come back to ya ---
what is the model of your bass in this video?
mil gracias maestro eres muy bueno 👍🙇🙋
Translate indonesia please
Thank You Mate
Thanks Mark! Do I do!
part time lover
can you cover do i do
Thank you sir
Thanks Mark, I would love to learn
Boogie On Reggae Woman
Superstition
That again was so well done. Thank You Very Much!
As for a new one...
how about a hidden gem of STEVIE WONDER.
"I WAS MADE TO LOVE HER."
This one is a special one because it also has the G.O.A.T. playing bass on it!!!!!
(Yes...James Jamerson...LOL!!!)
Excelent teacher!
Great work Mark
Hey fellow bass busters; If, like me, you struggle with the muscle memory for licks like this try playing the whole riff (once you've figured the fingering) at half time but STACCATO. I don't know why but the staccato really helped me remember the riff properly so it was imbedded in my muscle memory.
Cool
"Dark 'n' Lovely" from the album "Characters" .. Amazing song!!
Superstition by Stevie Wonder can you cover that please
At last - I've been sweating over this for the band - and now - I can nearly do it thanks to this - best tut for this tricky song. Thanks so much.
This was really helpful. If you haven't already done a video for SW's "As," I would really like to learn that one.
Excellent Mark, thanks for your videos and tabs, they are really helpfull:-)
American Life by Primus maybe? I’m having trouble with it and your one of the best teachers on UA-cam so I know you could be super helpful
Nate Watts tunes down a semitone (Eflat, Aflat, etc) so to him this would be like playing in C#. So while everyone else is playing the intro to I Wish around Aflat and Eflat he's quite happily doing it with A and E. I'm sure he'd be equally happy if he wasn't tuned down, but I need all the help I can get.
So crazy. I have been learning this on my own. Wtf?
This teacher always explain so it's easy to understand
Many thanks Mark, your explanations are great. Helped me a lot!
Totally Over My Skill Set But The Tutorial Was Brilliant - Thank You So Much For The TAB As Well - Stoked
Cheers
Hey Marc , I saw a slap pop version from happy birthday , also Steve wonder , can you maybe sort out that one , was so cool
ua-cam.com/video/wCahMg88lgE/v-deo.html
Throwing it out there because of course, have you done Sir Duke?
Well this should keep me busy for a few days, thanks for the complete song Mark!. Riffs are really cool to show us what is out these and motivate the practice, but songs help on the stamina. My hand hurts from those big frets on my Precision (is it just me? I love my precision but damn I find it hard towards the neck).
My favorite bassline to play! Our band used to do this a few years ago....we might have to break it out again!
Thx for this video and all lessons you made. "All I do", would be nice. Ty. :)
Thank for the explanations about the different scales ! It really helps understanding what you are doing and overall how to reuse those patterns in improvisation.
Master Basster
Good cover, always loved this song.
Do I do! Loads of lovely runs and fills. well worth a session
One of those rare grooves that sounds good without overdoing it
Oooh, that's pretty tasty! Cool!
always loved ur videos
Please do a lesson on Isn't she lovely😭
Good Job 👏👏👏👏
Sir Duke, sir. Please
Ohhhh this is a good one !!!
Is the tan to get more groove ?
Yes. Yes it is.
You're the best.!
All I do please!
Im already requesting Sir Duke as well!
Thanks for all Mark!
Yes to Sir Duke!!! Pls Mark...
Already done a lesson on the instrumental section
@@talkingbasslessons I've been working on that for about 6 months (I'm slow). It's great! What about "I Wish"?
Sir Duke?! And can you/someone explain the difference between the Cm and Eb maj pentatonics? To me they seem like the same thing just starting on different notes... Thanks!
Already done Sir Duke. For the Pentatonics, they are the same notes. But not the same scales. Just because a scale shares the notes of another doesn't mean it's the same scale. For example, C major and A Natural minor share exactly the same notes. But are they the same scale? No Have a think about it for a while and see if you can figure out why that is. Tip: Don't bother thinking about fretboard patterns or any of that stuff. Think notes, think keys and think chords.
@@talkingbasslessons Thanks Mark. I'll dig out your Sir Duke vid as soon as I've nailed Master Blaster. Re the pentatonics, the only thing I can think of is that they "start" on different notes. But then as we run down the shifting "triplets", we start each set on a different note anyway, so not sure that actually make sense. I'll be at your next hang, for sure, whether I've got it by then or not! Cheers :-)
@@adamdavies1910 The root note of the scale is the center of tonal gravity. Even though C major and A Nat minor have the same notes, the root note and main point of resolution is different. Also, the intervallic makeup is different. Measured from the root note the major scale has a major second, major third, a major 6th etc. The Minor has a minor third, a minor 6th etc. The order of whole steps and half steps from the root is different. So in other word, even though the set of pitches in the scales are the same, the different root notes make everything relative. Literally. In Eb major pentatonic, Eb is the center of the solar system. In C major it is C. Now I'm terms of using them in Master Blaster it's simply a pattern thing. The Eb major pentatonic makes for quick memorisation of the line. If you know both scale patterns you can use them to quickly think in position because they are the same notes but seen as different positions.
@@talkingbasslessons fabulous, thanks Mark for taking the time to reply. That all makes perfect sense. I need to listen to the riff again and start hearing it in that context. Super helpful. A
Sie Duke
Do I do fills are amazing
Too much dude and you didn't even start from the beginning of the song. It'd be cool if you played it through then broke it down. You chopped that steak into a million pieces from what was a succulent porterhouse to ground beef...
