I literally watched The Shining about 2 days ago for like the billionth time. But this time I watched it with my friend and his girlfriend who had never seen it, she was very unsettled watching it I love this film it's a masterpiece of horror cinema... everything about it is horrifying but the music just gets under your skin and stays there... Great Review 🤘

This movie is an absolute classic and it's owed to Jack Nicholson's acting and Stanley Kubrick's intense directing, especially the stories you hear of what happened on set during production between him and Shelley Duvall. If there was ever a Horror film I'd go back in time and visit the production of, the Shining would have to rank at the top of the list.

I'm so glad you liked Shelley Duvall in this movie, Lee. People have given her so much crap. But she worked her butt off and Kubrick put her through total hell. Even Jack Nicholson said he's never seen an actor work so hard or endure so much as Shelley did. I like her a lot.

She kicks ass in this movie and deserves the recognition. She's amazing.

@@DrumdumsOfficial I completely agree. I love her. I felt awful for her. And considering the shape she's in now. It's so heartbreaking. She was awesome. But it's like you said, Kubrick pushed her and got that hopeless exhausted reaction. It's almost not an act. She was really hysterical and felt hopeless and alone.

@@thetommyknockerman7193 Nothing against her performance, she did a great job with what Kubrick wanted from her. I just don't agree with his decision to make Wendy a much weaker character compared to the book.

      @thetommyknockerman7193 5 років тому

@@ForbiddenFruit73 I understand and agree. Shelley was just trying to play Wendy like Kubrick wanted. Wendy is tougher and more determined in the book. She also suffers more when confronting Jack.

One of the greatest. So many underlying themes and layers...obvious but can be easily overlooked. My gf just watched it for the first time in theaters a couple weeks ago and turned to me and asked whose the director. I told her and she mentioned the Illuminati symbolism and also the spirits chanting after Halloran is sacrificed. Shelley Duvall is amazing in this flick. So much stuff to cover. Great review Lee 🎃

The Shining is one of the most, if not the most, theorized horror film of all time, and that's a good thing! Theres so many fan theories about The Shining, and some are pretty freaking interesting. Great review, can't wait to watch Doctor Sleep next month!

The Shining is my all time favorite horror movie and one of my top 5 movies of all time. My older sister took my to see it at the theatre when it came out in 1980, I was 10 years old and Jack Nicholson scared the bejesus out of me. Stanley Kubrick was a genius that knew exactly what would work on film about King's novel and what wouldn't work. The movie is a masterpiece, the novel not so much.

The switch on the bed - that was the camera firstly pointed at the mirror in the bedroom. You can see the edging of the mirror if my memory serves me correct. Then it cuts to directly the actors. They never changed sides on the bed. The possible meaning behind this shot was to show the duality of Nicholsons character. Hitchcock done this a lot in Psycho - showing the main characters reflections in mirrors and windows to show they have two sides.

  • @Layne618

8:26 The reason why the camera angle changes in that scene is because, when it starts, what you're seeing is their reflection in a mirror across from them. When Wendy first walks in with the tray of food, it becomes obvious that the shot of Jack sleeping was actually reflected in a mirror. Just something I thought you'd be interested in.
Great review, by the way. I watched The Shining on Halloween this year, mainly because it actually snowed on Halloween where I live!

Great review Lee, there are so many theories & interpretations about this movie especially the films final image with the photo.
Glad you mentioned Shelley Duvall she don't get enough credit for her performance in this movie & her weary exhaustive look towards the end ain't acting I think it's how she genuinely felt.......knackered.
What are your thoughts on the ending Lee? is Jack a reincarnation of the man in the photo or his grandson perhaps or has the supernatural forces inside the hotel claimed his soul forever now trapped inside the photo & are you looking forward to Dr Sleep.
There's just something bat shit scary about Jack Nicholson performances his Joker was terrifying when he electrocuted the guy burnt to a crisp while singing.

Happy to see this landed the elusive Unicorn rating! It's easily one of the 10 greatest horror films ever made and one of the most beautifully shot, because Kubrick was a master of lighting and colors. Like you mentioned about The Thing, it captures the dread of isolation perfectly. Though the Overlook Hotel is massive, it is made impossibly claustrophobic by the snowstorm, which is unique.
It's only one of 2 horror movies even my dad loves, who typically shrugs at horror movies (the other being The Omen). I obviously fell far from that tree lol.
    Top notch review Mr. Lee!

The reason this film triumphs over all other horror films is the fact that there are no objective perspectives from the characters. Each one is going mad, in different ways, and we have no idea if the events happening are real.

That's so damn cool that you uploaded this....just watched The Shining last night to finish off my Stephen King marathon for the year (watched Children of the Corn, original Carrie, Sleepwalkers, the remake of It, Pet Sematary original and remake, Creepshow 1 and 2, Christine, and The Shining). The Shining is my second favorite horror film right behind John Carpenter's Halloween. The Shining is a near perfect film for me....it's amazing how creepy the film actually is when there's really only one kill and two deaths in the entire runtime. Just a perfect example of the fact that just because a movie is extremely gorey and there's redrum after redrum (get it? Haha) that doesn't exactly make a movie creepy. It's the atmosphere you set it in and the story backing it up and the score and all the little bits of everything else that converge together to make a near damn perfect movie. Thanks so much for making this video, Lee, and did you know that there's a 4K of The Shining out now and a 4K Steelbook? I'm really needing to get it on 4K, but been saving up my money for a couple months to get myself a car. After I finally get it, though, I'm gonna have to see about me getting the 4K edition. If you're still reading this, have a fantastic one, Lee!

Funny that since I first saw The Shining as a teenager up until the Blu-ray release, I wasn't aware of the extended version until it was eventually announced for that release. I had seen still photos of some of those scenes but thought they were merely outtakes, something that was common in horror books I read in the 90's.
The longer version I think is much better with building atmosphere and since it's more faithful to King's book, a real win-win.

Great review and synopsis! I love The Shining _so_ much. I truly think it’s a masterpiece that borders on Lovecraftian Terror... in many ways it’s what Kubrick chooses _not_ to show or elaborate upon that makes it truly uncanny and unsettling. I read King’s book several times when I was younger but imho Kubrick elevates both the text and subtext of the story. I also absolutely adore Nicholson’s performance and find it utterly riveting.

  • @DarkKnight-q2d

I have to add that while watching this, I just wanted to add that Jack's treatment of being a prick to Wendy actually started, I think, right away on the drive up to the Hotel. I truly believe there was always something evil lying dormant in Jack's subconscious that was only made awake by being in the Overlook Hotel. I don't think the Overlook ever actually truly gave him that mean streak towards his wife. Not to mention when Wendy openly talks about what happened between Jack and Danny back when Jack was drinking and "accidentally" hurt his own son. Maybe that's what the power of the Hotel was....it only made things come to light that was already lying dormant in a person's subconscious. Also, what you said about the switching sides on the bed thing....just another reason why Kubrick's one of my top 7 favorite directors of all time. He always thought of just about every possible detail in each one of his movies.

Long time no talk brother. I'll be putting up my own review of this soon so I'll keep this brief, but just wanted to put across my theory on kings complaint about jack being off balance from the beginning in the film. I am neither a filmmaker nor mindreader, but I think that was a calculated move on kubricks part to hold the viewer.
Anyone who read the book or watched trailers knew going in that jack was eventually going to go nuts. That was telegraphed at the outset. I think kubrick knew he wanted his film to be a chilling and atmospheric slow burn but he had to do something to ratchet up the tension. It's the move I would have made, at least. In a 2 and a half hour film, if the first hour played out like an episode of leave it to beaver with the family being ocassonally alarmed by something strange in the hotel, I think audiences would have been bored out of their minds. And not for nothing, but kings book sucks in my opinion. I'm a fan of his work, but I think that is one of his worst. I think he should be grateful for the retooling that kubricks did. Otherwise the theatrical release would have been as much of a dull clown-show as the miniseries that stayed true to the book.

Jack Nicholson deserves all of the credit he gets for his role, as does Shelley Duvall. Danny Lloyd I think puts on probably the best child performance in a horror movie in my opinion. I am a huge Stephen King fan, but his disdain for this film is something I totally disagree with him on. Its a masterpiece. I've watched this film so many times from the time I was around 11 or 12, until now an I seem to always pick up new little things with each viewing. Stanley Kubrick was a genius director. It is so hard for me to choose my all time favorite director as it is between John Carpenter and Stanley Kubrick. I would love to hear your thoughts, perhaps someday on the other Kubrick Masterpiece A Clockwork Orange. I cannot wait until Dr. Sleep is released. In my opinion, name a more perfect fitting for a director for Doctor Sleep than Mike Flanagan. I'm actually hyped Netflix and Warner Bros decided to make this film a theatrical release because it is that kind of story that needs that treatment and except for one film he's done that I thought was just okay, the guy has a phenomenal resume of films and productions. Also I cannot talk about how much I loved the Shining sequence in Ready player one, say what you want about about the movie, but the digital recreation of the Overlook Hotel for that environment was fantastic. And one my top favorite scenes in this movie, is the iconic scene of Jack giving Wendy a whole lecture and breakdown after she discovers what he's been writing the whole time. Fuckin love that scene. I actually try 2 remember all those lines he says 2 her lol. Especially the part, "... I'm not gonna hurt ya. I'm just gonna bash your brains in. Bash 'em, right the fuck in!...". Fucking classic.

Some think It part 2 old naked lady was scary. Well that CGI video game character can't hold a candle to the real scary old naked lady in the Shining.

Jack thinks of his wife more like a child, that’s why she’s dressed in the same clothes as the Goofy statue in Danny’s room and same colors as Danny thru the movie like the Twins

Mike Flanagan did something interesting in the sequel he cast actors who looked like the main cast of The Shining(1980) Ewan McGregor is perfect as the older Dan Torrance

The flip scene i think is just the reflection in the mirror. Also i feel like a lot of directors just put random little Easter eggs in their movies for no reason except to just see what kind of off the wall theories people will come up with 😂😂

    • @Corn_Pone_Flicks
      @Corn_Pone_Flicks 5 років тому

You're correct...the first half of the scene is looking into the wall mirror. You can see the frame of the mirror, and you can clearly see that the text on Jack's shirt is backwards.

Revisit Black Christmas (1974) sometimes and/or review A Christmas Story (1983) which is interesting that Bob Clark did both films which are two very different Christmas movies.

I know that directors are hard on their actors to get the best out of their actors
I agree with Lee on what must happen in art wholeheartedly
The Shining(1980) should’ve won the award for Best Art Direction and Best Production Design

Great review Lee I am honestly not sure if I ever saw the movie all the way through but I agree it gets intense! I think it's a solid film but I agree with Steven King that Jack Nicholson while he played an excellent crazy person but trying to play a normal guy was mixed at best! The film get's insanely intense and I have to give it major praise for that and I do really like it! I think it's among the best Steven King films but could be a little stronger! I am really curious about Doctor Sleep and I hope it's as good as The Shining or at least close to it!

Kubrick is simply the best director of all time! People that like horror and do not like this film are usually F13 fans, meaning they want no good writing, acting or directing. They want morons being killed by a bigger moron!
The thing that I found out after loving Kubrick’s films was that his IQ was at genius level! The scene on the stairs took over a 100 takes!!! There were no mistakes in a Kubrick film, you would never get Michael in a pink mask with Blonde hair in a Kubrick film!
