Check out Duvall's little-known 1970 debut flick Brewster McCloud - she's actually pretty HOT in THAT. However, no, I've never found her cute in The Shining or Popeye (which happen to be her two most popularly known roles).
I love this movie!! I never found one second of this movie boring, even watching it as a teenager. I guess that’s one of the benefits of growing up in the era of non instant gratification! 😂
Kathy, this is a solid and deep character study for sure. I remember watching this, as a teen, in the 80s on cable several times. I believe I was also taken to this at the drive in with my departed mom's then husband. This is a slow burn full blown examination of descent into madness. Fascinating flick.
Shelly Duvall in that movie was attractive. I mean, i've had much worst, tell you that... Other thing: that guy don't understand tradition and its important but bashes it anyway. That's dumb.
Oh hell, you know these movie audiences of TODAY - THEY pretty much crave guns, car-chases, explosions and computer effects every second throughout the whole thing and if a flick doesn't have THAT shit then THEY'll call it "boring". THOSE audiences were weaned on all the big bloated action flicks that Hollywood has been heaping upon the movie-going masses for the past thirty so years - THAT is what has fostered it. I duno about her in THIS flick, but try Duval's little-known 1970 debut flick Brewster McCloud, .. . she's actually pretty cute in THAT flick, believe it or not.
My guy you have got to be one of the most consistent posters I subscribe to. Reviews are my happy place and horror movies makes it just that much more next level. I can't explain how much I appriciate your channel and content, keep on keeeping on brotha 🤘🤙🖖✌
So regarding your comment about the room number change...apparently the Timberline lodge that they used for the exterior of the Overlook at the beginning...they requested the change because they had a room 217 but not up to 237...apparently they thought people would be scared to stay in their room 217 after the movie came out...kinda silly but that's the reason lol
Another one of my favorite movies!!!!! I first saw this when I was very young !!! I tried talking to a co worker about what horror they have watch lately and they say they don’t watch horror !! No one that I personally know watch horror 😭!!! Love your view on this movie!!!!💖
I’m 14 and I’ve been wanted to watch the shining for a while and now that I finally did, I’m hooked! There’s so much possibility for theories and symbolism in this movie, every little detail matters. The shining is a masterpiece and it’s quite definitely my favorite movie, I doubt anything else will even compare to the experience!
Kubrick did some amazing movies during his career. I personally don't rank this one as high as 2001, Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove or Full Metal Jacket but it's an excellent film for sure. Interesting side note, Scatman was trying to get with my mom in the 60s... I always told my mom that she should have got with him, as the guy probably would have taken good care of her. Anyways, great review again Jason!
They changed the room number because the hotel they shot the movie in didn't want any "haunted room" rumors. So they used a room number that wasn't actually in the hotel.
Hope they can keep to the same standards in 'Dr. Sleep'. The Shining is definitely one of the best horror movies ever made. Horror nowadays are pretty trash.
have you seen "room 237" the documentary ? its interesting in a way lol it breaks down a lot of the back ground pieces & the hotel itself & what people who love the movie take things in it to mean, idk how to explain good but ive seen it 3-4 times ...I like docs
Love these spoiler reviews; you almost always point out something subtle that I missed(Play Girl in this one). The ending always confused me and I was hoping you would provide some insight into this; oh well. lol.
First off, love your comment about royalty. I think American obsession with British royalty is more disgusting than American obsession with the fucking kardashians and the like. Some actress from a shitty legal drama on the USA network, the main purpose of which as best I can tell was to see how many times they could awkwardly fit the phrase "God damn" into each one hour episode, marries into the "royal family" and now I can't read my news feed on my phone without seeing at LEAST 2 articles about her and her newborn kid. As for the shining, I found your review interesting and agree with many of your points, although you're on your own with the whole shelley being attractive thing! I think one of the most chilling scenes in that movie is the bizarre thing with the dudes dressed as animals engaging in gay sex, because it was so discordant and out of left field. That gave me nightmares as a kid. Ice always considered this and the original halloween the 2 scariest films I've ever seen, and the sense of realism in both is a large part of that. That has a lot to do with cinematography and other technical shit, but also at their core, both stories have an unsettling "this can happen to you" quality. I haven't watched the shining in a long time but if I can locate my blu ray I'm doing that tomorrow and will put up my own review soon. I hope you will watch and comment. Cheers
Hey Jason, with the way it seems like Hollywood is scraping the bottom of the barrel for movie ideas do you think it's possible that just like our generation kind of stopped reading books and choose movies instead and that the next generation will stop watching movies to play interactive ultra realist video games? I always like pondering the future. Americans will always be the hardest people on Earth to keep entertained.
I mean, I've had the pleasure to see hundreds of horror movies thanks to television, advertisement and even UA-camrs like yourself. Being almost twenty one never stopped me from enjoying a movie that was revolutionary for it's time. This kinda reminds me of Joker, a less violence though.
You feel about this film how I do about The Thing - it’s my background film at times and other times it’s my comfort film. The isolation, the score just everything. I get what you mean about the losing control thing- terrifying! I have the occasional vision problem- it looks like a blizzard and I can only hear a high pitch ringing sound and and I sometimes I can’t move my hands and it scares the shit out of me, so the thought of not being able to control that - just awful (another reason I don’t drive) but a dangerous uncontrollable psychological break like jack??? Horrifying!
Santos yep I’ve had scans and it’s been investigated thoroughly there’s apparently nothing physically wrong with me (no epilepsy) closest I could get to an answer was possible nerve damage around my eye and inner ear- I hit the left side of my head as a kid got a lovely scar on the edge of my left eye and my left ear also no longer pops.
You probably dont care but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can watch pretty much all of the new movies on instaflixxer. I've been streaming with my gf for the last days =)
"The guy just doesn't understand movies." That might be true, but Stephen King understands The Shining because he wrote the book. And King is absolutely right in his criticism Kubrick because Kubrick missed all of the character development elements that King laid out. The Shining isn't just John's story, it's Wendy and Danny's story, too.
The owners of the hotel used in the outdoor shots asked that the room numbers be changed from 217 to 237 so people would not be afraid to stay in it. In reality that room is the most requested at the real Stanley Hotel in Colorado.
Sidenote: Eggs can stay edible as long as they're refrigerated for up to 3 months, so they can totally have had eggs a month in with little issue. Back to the main point of reviewing the movie: if you *haven't* watched other people's reviews, from over the decades, concerning the layers and layers of symbolism in the film... _then you need to go and do that_ *right now* ... then come back and do another review. (It will take you many, many hours but will answer many of the questions you cite throughout your video as "not understanding".)
I think Kubrick took the basic premise of King's novel and did his own thing with it, which I don't see a problem with. All of his other adaptations differ from the source material as well so I don't know why he has such a stick up his ass about this one.
Great review, Jason! The Shinning is in my top 5. A true masterpiece. Btw, i have neglected your channel for a few months now. Really don't know why, your content is still awesome. Looking forward to more in the future!
0:27 exactly ... Im not sure what’s more comforting, The audiobook or movie. This movie shows you how, we can be stripped from *peace of mind* and sanity. I mean it so damn cozy. I’m diggin this review ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Thanks Jason...this & The Exorcist are my favourite movies of all time!! Picked up the 4K...looks AMAZING!!!! I also got to meet the Grady twins in the Summer at a convention here in the UK, I just wanted to take them home with me!!! 🥰
Great breakdown. I like to enjoy the film and the book separately without comparing too much. This film does such a good job of making you feel trapped in the maze-like hotel. Plus those twins scared the shit out of me as a kid.
I love the movie and the book was good too. I know its hard to turn a beloved book into a movie because you don't have the screen time to do it all. That's the "complaint" if you want to even use that strong of a word with the scene with the guy and the guy inn the animal costume.. Sure its a weird thing to see esp if you are ssupposedly alone in this hotel but without the book the whole meaning of the scene is lost. Incredible movie though. I read somewhere that Stephen King wrote this book/had the inspiration for this book many years ago while he just happened to be staying in the Stanley Hotel. I've heard some wild "alleged true story" that Jim Carrey stayed there one night and mid evening he ran screaming out of there never to return or explain. I believe the King story but not the Carrey one. I believe very much in ghosts and I understand negative energy can inhabit a place where tragedy happened (some accident where a boiler exploded and ruined part of the building) but I don't know to think of it all. I would like your opinion- do you believe the Stanley is "haunted" or "plagued by evil forces" or whatever,,,, or did that reputation come from the movie being set there. I'd love to know your opinion because I respect you very much
The Shining, absolute masterpiece. The film is full of hidden knowledge, and there are lots of theories about it. Many of them are true, but those theories are only part of the whole, and for example in case of native american genocide theory, it is just details describing the past evils. On almost all of the theories, there are lots of more evidence, and in many case better evidence, that isn't published anywhere. Maybe it's up to me to do a thorough video some day, to share all the knowledge after years of studying Kubrick, and The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut especially.
a master reviews a masterpiece! the book was very different. only read it once. i dig Shelly as well probably because she played Olive. but it’s cool that’s she’s into horror as Wendy. the snow mobile is called a Snowcat. go ahead Wendy! Check it out!!!
I struggled with adhd bad as a kid and I like this film and look at John carpenter's Halloween it's not quick paced and I love it Ha Ha the Gate from 1987 is slow and I enjoy that film BTW I didn't get offended by what you were saying at all was just saying not all with that are like that I love a good film and story. it's all cool keep up the good Reviews!
There was ONE thing that I did find sort of pretty about Duvall, .. . she did have very lovely high cheekbones.
Ah, a man of fine tastes. Shelley was so beautiful.
I also find Shelley Duvall strangely attractive lol
Brian Skeggs 😈😈😈
Check out Duvall's little-known 1970 debut flick Brewster McCloud - she's actually pretty HOT in THAT. However, no, I've never found her cute in The Shining or Popeye (which happen to be her two most popularly known roles).
You are not alone I also found Shelley Duval attractive in this. And twink central lol

Tom T Absolutely!! 👍 Very cool you got to see this one at the drive-in.
That opening is your best yet 😂 great review yet again.
Shelly Duvall in that movie was attractive. I mean, i've had much worst, tell you that... Other thing: that guy don't understand tradition and its important but bashes it anyway. That's dumb.
In the Play-girl magazine there was an article about Incest! Which indicates he was sexually abusing Danny.
Or Wendy is his sister 😉
Fantastic review brother!!
Oh thanks buddy ❤️❤️❤️

Finally, the review we were all waiting for =D
I think they changed it to room 237 in the movie because there was a room 217 and they were afraid no one would want to stay in it again.
Love these spoiler reviews; you almost always point out something subtle that I missed(Play Girl in this one). The ending always confused me and I was hoping you would provide some insight into this; oh well. lol.

Was Dr. sleep a good book? I adore the Shining. Definitely in my top 10 horror films ever made.

Best horror movie ever. I still think Barry Lyndon and Clockwork Orange was slightly better. Kubrick was a genius
The one thing I thnk proves there are ghosts is the fact that someone had to let him out of the food stoee.
Gotta have good teeth.....mandatory. This review is awesome and made me literally laugh out loud several times.
I went to see this twice on it's re-release twice for $15 a pop...it's a masterpiece
The owners of the hotel used in the outdoor shots asked that the room numbers be changed from 217 to 237 so people would not be afraid to stay in it. In reality that room is the most requested at the real Stanley Hotel in Colorado.
Kubrick said that, but that is pure lie. First, that would make no sense and there isn't even room number 217 on that hotel.
He also had a huge problem with the way they handled Wendy - he thinks (I agree) they turned her into way too much of a wimp.
I can see that
But that made her empowerment that much more magnificent!
@@zeidenmedia That meant I spent the entire movie wanting to slap her hard.

I think The Shining is one of those films that still holds up today, for me. I still find the score chilling. Are you excited for Doctor Sleep?
I think 2001 a space odyssey is kubrick's best film, but this is my favorite kubrick film
most watched movie perfect movie.
