Lesson learned: Not popping is not „holding“. It is offering cards for the opponents.
If I'd seen another 7 I would've tilted myself into the next room. Lordy
I think that holding instead of deving when you are the target is usually a mistake. Having said that, if the 7 doesn't take off like it did, you probably still win.
By my count, that was 16 cards robbed from you, 9 lost to sevening out, 5 to monopoly. For a total of 30!!
But you got to steal 3 whole times! 🙃

really frustrating ending. An interesting dillemma at the end between popping vs holding. Everyone will obviously say popping is better, but they're kinda being results-orientated. Honestly, it's tough. I think dev cards though are not bad though since yop, road buikding, mono, vp, and knight are all not bad. Probably vp is the best situation. It just sucks to have all your cards stolen and then wish you had bought a dev.
There was a high probability (about 40%) that someone had at least one monopoly card with 2 knights played and the players having 5 devs in hand. Plus the likelihood of additional dev buys soon from them as well. I’m happy to grab a dev and hope for a VP or YOP.

It’s not automatically results oriented just because it would have benefitted him given the results. A priori it was always bad to pass instead of buying devs and placing roads, on multiple of Dylan’s turns. Usually he plays well but he repeatedly made that same bad decision.

Everything between 10:00 and 11:30 is freaking hilarious. "Oh gosh, I really, really, really need to win the race to 11 3. I NEEEEED 11 3. I'm dead without 11 3. Man, a 5 roll would be killer to let me get 11 3."
5 rolls, and what does ol' dyll pickle do? "Hmm, should I city here, or take 11 3? Gee wiz, is 11 3 even good?"

Really interesting that you turned your third settlement into a city! It makes sense but I just wouldn't expect that to often be the case!
Ore wheat sheep wins the game. Dylan started with brick wood to build towards the better ore sheep spots. Since if he started on ore wheat, he'd lack the wood to expand. He already has enough brick wood to keep expanding and in the right ratio. Upgrading either spot would imbalance his brick wood. Upgrading both would not only be really hard but also overproduce brick wood. It's a nobrainer to upgrade your wood sheep here. The only reason to upgrade the other ones is for the little bit of extra grain, but it only goes about +60% instead of x2 for him as he has 2 wheat spots.
This is why you always grind up your hand. Dylighted is too greedy

You're on every number with multiple 6 and 5 and a city. You have to buy devs and not 7 out. Every dev is 0.2 vps, only 2 resources plus protection if you get a knight, and virtual vps if you get mono or yop.
Why is a dev 0.2 vps? Theres only 5 of them and like 14 knights.
@@adityagarg2185 0.2 x 25 = 5 vp devs. It's a 1 in 5 chance of pulling a vp dev, so (1/5) x (1 vp) = 1/5

at the end game the stats show you exactly, 18:56 shows 16 times !!
I think the table collectively had as many 7outs as you did this game.
People are overlooking the biggest issue of this game, the absolute incompetence of the other players. The fact that Dylan was getting robbed like that after it was clear Blue was at 8 with a mystery dev, and then ESPECIALLY after it was clear Blue was at 9, cannot be overlooked. This is the main reason I don't play Catan much anymore. I can deal with shit luck, shit board placement, whatever. But playing with abject morons just kills my spirit. I'm moving onto Chess, that way their stupidity is my gain, and my stupidity is theirs.
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find this comment. Black’s blocks were horrendous. 6 brick!? If I suffer from too many decisions like that I stop playing online for weeks.
It just comes down to communication. In a live game where my opponents are there and listening you can pretty easily communicate to your opponents that Blue is ahead in this position and has winning rolls.

And I totally hear you, but honestly anyone who's a novice, at least in my opinion, should be able to see how strong Blues position got. Maybe it's just me, as I play almost only 30 sec games, so I'm used to just gauging things quickly. But I didn't feel like it needed table talk. Especially in a tournament. But still loved the video. I'm only so passionate because I could feel your pain during the last 5 mins xD
That 6,9,10 spot is just disgustingly good for first on this board. Best ore an best wheat and uncontested wood port on a super high wood board with great coastal outs around the 8-wood tiles.

Unlucky. I would have connected my roads on top of the board after the 65 expansion. Next step 6 brick 3:1. i think thats much easier cause there‘s no competition for these spots

When in doubt pop a dev.
during the set up phase how do you place hypothetical settlements for your opponents to help visualise the potential board? thanks

Blue messed up big time a rule I use is always build toward the contested position first. Common sense but he should of seen it coming with how much road production you had

What a rough game. People can say you should’ve bought devs, and maybe it’s true, but at the end of the day you just got unlucky with both the 7s and the other players not recognizing blue as a threat at the end. Games like this make me take a few days off from catan
