Japanese manga usually has just one main artist with assistants so the art is consistent and part of the joy is to see the art improvements over time.
Having multiple artists makes sense as a business so you can continue the legacy for decades without overworking a single mangaka weekly. But it gets difficult to read when I get used to one art style then the next volume it completely changes as if I’m reading a different series.

I'm reminded of a show I watched like, in the early 2000's talking about Manga, not word for word but basically the gist is, "There are manga out there with something for everyone. There are stories about Office workers, old people falling in love, Superhero stories, dark fantasy, gay stories and even just for perverts." Basically no matter what topic you can think of, there's probably a manga that can scratch that itch and even if it doesn't, there's a good chance someone is writing that story right now. I'll be honest, I hate the modern idea of representation and everytime someone says it because it sounds like the most Marketing BS just dribbling out of their mouth. True representation lies in the pages of people not trying to tick a box. Hell one of the most diverse types of Games are Fighting games, not because "Muh representation" but because varied fighting styles and cultures naturally go together and are cool to watch. Like KOF, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Street Fighter, etc all had a multinational cast with the sole goal of beating the piss out of each other and it was great.

The political messages in recent comic books are not the issue; every meaningful story usually has a message it conveys, but beating the message over the reader's head IS the issue. What is the message of The Matrix? It's a trans allegory but the message is actually conveyed with nuance that allows for many ways of interpretation.
You can't have a story about how killing people is a bad thing and then have characters only talk about that one thing in a hamfisted way because it would be terrible. Having a good message doesn't mean the story is good, and from what I know, the issues the comic book industry face are because the stories are generally kind of shit. Death Note's message is basically that, but it's a good story, and so is well liked.

@Chad Kakashi And the Matrix is definitely an allegory. It might not be a trans one (though the creators say it is so we could just take their word) but it is clearly trying to convey a deeper meaning about the way we think. It's just that it's meaning it subtle enough to make it enjoyable on a surface level experience.
Attack on Titan is a story about people fighting titans, yet on a deeper level it's about the issues of hatred and racism. And you can argue that Attack on Titan is even an allegory for the tensions between China and Japan post-world war 2. This last interpretation (which has a lot of evidence) is something I do NOT agree with personally, as it implies that China is wrong for holding grudges despite Japan committing war crimes, and yet Attack on Titan is good enough to enjoy despite that. I love Attack on Titan but disagree with it's stance on things.
A comic book pausing its story to have the characters mouth off how sexism is bad is just pure shit. Not because the message is pure shit, but because of how it is told. It's just shit, and arguable, even worse than that because of how a story like that treats its audience as dumb.
(The issues with comics is also probably tied to how the writers are commonly hacks who got the job through nepotism...)

In the Jack Kirby interview segment, there's a book over his shoulder in the background called "The Art of Jack Kirby" published by Blue Rose Press. I worked on that book with a couple of other people. I drew the cover, aping Jack's style and Kevin Eastman (of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fame) inked and colored it. Eastman also financed the book.
Because of the research on that book, I got to meet Jack at his house and look through his personal collection. In that room was a flat file cabinet as tall as I was that was packed with envelopes holding the original art from entire issues of the books he worked on. Roz, his wife, took some of the romance and war comics he'd done and had them bound into hardcovers. Now this generally devalues the comics in the binding, but in this case, each volume had inside the cover a plate that said "From the Library of:" and each was signed by Jack.
As part of the project, I also got to scan and touch-up for publishing pages from his personal war notebooks where he drew things when he got bored sitting in a foxhole. These were done in a style you wouldn't recognize as the bombastic one he's known for.

I'm actually jealous of the light novel industry in Japan, a thing that doesn't even exist as a concept in the US. Over here, you have to invest a huge amount of energy in writing a full novel and then hope that one of a handful of publishing companies will deign to give it a chance as one of the few things they publish that year. Those companies predetermine what they think readers want that year and only publish novels that fit into that frame.
It seems to me that Japan has a much better system with tons of LNs being put out there as well as manga. I mean, people even sell doujins--basically fanfiction. The creative market in Japan just seems far more open. Yeah, you hear about how hellish it can be to work in the manga or light novel industries in Japan, but people are actually doing it. I feel like the main problem with the current day comic book industry was summed up quite well at the start of the video. They beat you over the head with their message instead of having it naturally unfold to you throughout the story. Instead of finding out the story's message alongside the characters in a moment of growth, they are screaming their message straight into your ears. Their mistake is that they think the message comes before the story, and that is wrong. In order to send your message in a way that will resonate with people, you need a good story to tell that message. Storytelling 101 is "Show, don't tell." So don't tell me what your message is and why it matters, SHOW me what it is and why it matters.

    • @t.7124
      @t.7124 2 роки тому +5

Exactly. The messages are good, and it's great to see more diversity in comic books, but it's the fact that they are just bad that is the issue. Like, Jojo's is fucking ridiculous and hardly has a message, but it's good and enjoyable and fun.

Corporations, Hollywood, corporations that listen and echo what Twitter says, journalists, gaming and devs, just so many are saying the same thing in the same way with the same bs and it's just like .."why?" They are losing money and venture capital and floundering quickly. Why did this flip everything and staying that way? Is it just so the executives can leech more of the money and claim that all the other levels are failing so they pay them less while they get grossly overpaid while no one is watching since everyone is bickering about these kinds of topics?

I tried getting into US comics in the early 2010s but that happened after years of reading manga.
Big huge mistake, US comics at the time were terrible when compared against manga at any category. I gave it my best so I just bought the animated movies that adapted the best stories from the 80s comics and they were great but once you done with those animated movies, you are left out in the cold... the comics were nothing but political commentary with mediocre art.
In manga/anime I can actually indulge in escapism with solid, innovative and non-preachy stories... the fact that the art is levels above current US comics industry is just the icing on that cake.

America used to be that all its citizens loved the country and the left and right just had different approaches to the same goal. Now however the left is wole and anti America and they own the artistic control of the characters in those comics. It's also why they went after Thor in the mcu. Thor is the embodiment of whiteness...the lefts ultimate enemy white straight male power. He is a Nordic God, he is invincible, he inherited his power via birth right as with his kingdom. He is everything the left hates despite him actually being based on a real Nordic mythical character...they will look to change him to suit their wokeness. In End Game, they used him as a punching bag before introducing the new age female characters. They made him a wimp, scared, fat, lost, vulnerable, a bad leader to make Valkyrie look stronger than him, to look down at him.

When I was a teenager there was a local comic book shop my friends and I would go to every Friday after school. I would save all the money I could during the week just to buy a few issues and we'd go to my friends house to read them together. We'd share issues so that we all didn't have to buy each one. It was an awesome feeling to be genuinely excited about what I read on the page and what was going to happen next.
The store itself was amazing. Super clean and gave off that new comic book smell. There was hand drawn art on all the walls and a special room in the back with art books and a place for kids to draw together. The community and the employees were amazing! They were always eager to have a chat about anything comics. I loved that comic book shop.
Recently I found myself thinking about that shop and my great memories with it. I haven't gone in years and I was afraid the pandemic may have killed it. I looked it up and sure enough it was still there so I instantly rushed over. But when I entered the doors of my of my old comic book shop my excitement turned to sadness. The store looked disorderly, filthy, and stale. The special backroom was now just filled with empty cardboard boxes and even the new comic book smell was gone. Still I went through the new arrival section to see if I'd pick anything up just for old time sake. But I couldn't find a single story that peaked my interest. I left slightly depressed and without making a single purchase.

For example, I've read a comic book and a manga once that tackles the same conflict about being in the LGBTQ+ community. Even though they are similar their ways of writing are quite different, and left different impressions on me. The comic left me feeling like I've been lectured and talked down by a stranger on a train I just met merely for existing. The manga however made me feel like I'm an intruder for reading them, like I'm reading a private personal diary, I can feel the characters pain and struggle and it felt kind of scary at times at how real they can be. The major problem with American comics is that nothing ever changes. No major character truly ever dies in comics, they are always brought back to life and everything returns to status quo, because DC and MARVEL at the end are just way too scared to invent new characters. How many times are we gonna get the same old Batman vs. Joker stories? The same Superman vs. Doomsday stories? It doesn't matter how much you change them, they are still the SAME CHARACTERS!!!
Manga isn't afraid to end a good run. Every major manga has a clear beginning and an end. Sure Naruto and Bleach may overstay their welcome with dozens of filler arcs, but they still tell a complete story from beginning to end. Manga creators aren't afraid to end their popular series and start a new one. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a great example of a story that's still ongoing for decades, but each arc with completely brand new protagonists, villains and setting. If JoJo was created as an American comics, we'd still be having the exact same stories of Jonathan Joestar fighting Dio today after 30 years.
If I want to know the ins and outs of what happened to Spiderman, I have to read 40 years of comics as well as deciding which version of Spiderman I want to read. It's just confusing. If I want to read about Son Goku, there's one clear arc from Dragon Ball to DBS. If I want to read about Izuki Midoriya, I just start from chapter 1 of My Hero Academia. There isn't an Ultimate, Spectacular, Amazing or vintage version of Midoriya each with its own stories and variations.
Oh and the art too. American comics have inferior art when it comes to depicting the flow and dynamics of action sequences. That's just the truth. There are so many DC and MARVEL comics that are obviously given to junior artists with very little experience, and it shows.

This cheapens the events that happen in comics, as they can and will be overridden by some cosmic reset, which removes any dramatic impact from that story. For example, why should I care if Superman is killed-off, when we know that it's only a matter of time until they find someway to bring him back to life. Conversely, major events in manga/anime like Griffith sacrificing the Band of the Hawk, or Eren activating the Rumbling are permanent, and the effects they had on the characters and the world can still be felt until the end, and their dramatic impact stays with the viewer. This is because we know that there's nothing to reset these events, so they aren't rendered pointless. Not only that, but clear, concise story-telling like this gives the reader a reason to move on to something else. To not just get stuck watching the same story and to enjoy other stuff.

I'm afraid that's just false. Can I bring Detective Conan to your attention? The story is barely developed after ALL this time, I can point you to many web/light novels that have no right to still be ongoing and yet they go on because someone will consume them.
The fundamental difference is that comics will also bring a story to a conclusion, but not a definitive one, never. You'll keep seeing superman until the human race goes extinct.
Comics have changed over time, I had issues reading pre 90s stories, they were nonsensical at times, or I had difficulties taking some things seriously.
But they were the product of writers who wanted to express something through the characters, and those were things not many people find contentious.
Doubts over power and the independence of the human race with God like protectors taking care of things for them.
      Nice.
"Why I think trans women are equal to natural women" is a bit different.
Anime and manga are mostly products you consume. So many let you self insert and indulge in your fantasies, it's kind of amazing how varied they are. But they are still Otaku bait.
99% of them exploit and enable the self destructive lives of people who want nothing to do with the world who look for what they want from it in fictional stories.
Unless anime or manga specifically want to preach to you about something, they won't, or you won't notice.
I mean, Fate/Stay Night is such a powerful critique of heroism and idealism, while indirectly touching on the negatives of altruism, but you won't be bothered by it unless you're like Shirou.
Instead, modern bad comics are relevant to current events, wishes of people, and so it's no surprise if people don't want to hear it. You can't escape the messages and that's annoying.

@@BygoneT I'm going to argue that Detective Conan is meant to be an episodic series with no overarching plot. Aoyama just needed a flimsy setup for having a super smart kid detective and has been trying to let the Black Organization plot die quietly in the background for over a decade. Or maybe it was shoved into the background once the series' longevity was guaranteed and there was no longer a need for an emergency "End of Story" button. It's an excuse to delve into murder-mystery-of-the-week.
Not everyone is going to like that, especially manga readers more used to serials than episodic series, but it works well for what it tries to be. And like you said, as long as people like me are willing to buy it there's no real incentive to change the formula and wrap up the plot.

Forgot to mention a huge problem that is killing the reader base of comics is that it’s not very friendly for old fans and young potential fans to keep reading or join in. Old fans get tired of the same stories and the same fake outs and reboots. Stories go nowhere in the big scheme of things. As for young potential fans it’s extremely unfriendly to get into something that requires years of research in order to get up to date in the current stories of both a single franchise and the multiverse it shares. All for mere details that may or may not be retconned anyway, since in comics if the big changes and development didn’t happened during your origin story chances are they won’t stick anyway.

They’re being monetized in such a way that is disrespectful to the medium it’s part of. Some people in some other parts of the world knows actual real violence on the daily that us westerners cannot even start to imagine. It's a total lack of respect and hindsight to the realities of the world to say something like this. Manga also has alot of moment that make you feel uplifted, make you laugh, and give the reader a positive vibes. Moments like that is few in between in comics.

Comic books however usually have lots of complicated lore made more complicated by reboots, revivals, and different writer’s making it unappealing for potential knew fans who don’t know where to begin. Comics are being increasingly used to put out a narrative that overtakes the fun and becomes the central plot. The world is already bad enough without people bringing their problems into other peoples means of escaping reality for a while. The whole point of reading a comic or manga is just to relax and inject a little happiness into life, not wave the doom and gloom in our faces. Honestly, I’ve seen this argument that comics are losing to manga because “oh the wokeness” so many times and I think it’s a shallow, reactionary take.
In reality, manga was always destined to outperform comics as it became more accessible. In America, there are two major comic companies: Marvel and DC. Both of these companies primarily produce superhero comics with long, interconnected continuities. While this makes for some fun stories, it appeals to a limited audience and it’s difficult to adopt later even within that limited audience. Manga, on the other hand, has much more variety to choose from. Different manga continuities typically don’t connect, making all of these stories isolated and easy to get invested in. Additionally, manga comes in any genre you can think of and appeals to a lot of different audiences. This is why manga is currently growing in popularity while comics are stagnating.

I remember seeing the picture of Psylocke leaning over when I was young and going, "yup, she's hot. I want to grow up to look like her". I want my comic book characters, male and female, to be hot. My gf likes looking at alot of independent western comics, and as far as a realistic solution goes I think this is probably the best place to go. Western comic readers need to try to support more independent comics, since they seem to have more competency in telling a good story - doing that is a whole other issue though. Just search and share good independent comics, and hopefully a new ecosystem of better comics can be built

Comics have been stretching their talent and ideas (these days known as IP) to reach out and out to markets beyond the initial creators' scope of imagination. Manga is great because it's usually only ever ONE PERSON making the story. They either finish their story or they don't. Nothing ever gets the chance to be "updated for a greater audience" but the whole product gets to be consumed as intended and critiques accordingly.

Man, I remember using up all of my allowance to buy DC Dark Knight and the Batman Detective comics. I kinda dropped out of comics, but in recent years I started to look at them again to introduce my kids to that world, but boy was it trash. Then my daughter told me about Manga and Anime, and i started watching and reading some with her, and was blown away by the storytelling and art. At my house since then, the only entertainment books we give them money for is Manga, and when that smug comic writer said if i didn't like her politics, don't buy her books, well that's exactly what I did, or didn't. Doubled down and got them boxed Manga sets for Christmas, bought the collectibles, etc. So, these comic writers have to realize they aren't only pissing off long time fans, but also parents who decide what can and can't be bought buy their kids, aka the next generation of fans.

My favourite manga is Hibi Chouchou. It's a take on the highschool romance/slice of life genre but I've never seen anything like it. Both main characters are extreme introverts, they talk only with their best friends, the friends have to push them together when they find out their sympathy, but in the end they take it at their own pace and work it out without help.
This manga threw me out the window, cause most interactions the two have for almost the whole first half of the series are without words. They usually just bow to each other and go their separate ways, or they pull each other's sleeves. But it still says waay more than it looks like. It makes anything more than a look much more important cause you know they had to go way out of their way to do it. It took 30 chapters for them to voice out they were in a relationship!
The coolest thing Morishita Suu does is make all the friends and people around them very extroverted. This makes them stand out more and their reactions are more significant. For example they bow to each other and go, and almost always one of the friends has some remark on how weird that is. For me, it just made all interactions even more special.
Absolute gem, a must-read if you're into highschool manga or a relationship-heavy story.
