I have a 1978. I installed 4) Jensen MOD speakers, replaced a few resistors and all of the capacitors and installed new tubes. I got it in working condition from a church for $200. It sounds great with bass at lower volumes and amazing for guitar at any volume. My only complaint is that it's top-heavy and on a soft carpet they want to fall over, so set of casters helps.

Even if you can find one for cheap, buyer beware: Unless this vintage amp has been serviced in the last 5 or 10 years, expect to pay a competent tech $200-500 to replace any worn out pots, capacitors, resistors, tubes, and speakers, power cord, and ensure all connections are tight and clean. Otherwise, your amp likely won’t be reliable or gig-worthy.

Very true for any vintage amp but I believe these Tens are built pretty stout and the circuit is extremely simple. The one I own was definitely gigged hard and put away wet, it's got several bruises, partially dented faceplate and the power transformed was slightly loose... The thing sounds glorious and gets played every single day for numerous hours. What's even crazier is it still has the original caps which I haven't gotten around to replacing simply because the amp functions perfectly and sounds glorious.
More I play it the more I fall in love with it. It's simple circuit allows the true voice of the guitar come thru but still maintains a definite Fender/Bassman vibe to the character. My only possible complaint could be that it doesn't really break up but I tend to expect that from most vintage Fenders... It will get a little hairy at LOUD volumes but nothing a drive or boost can't overcome.
It hits WAAAY above it's price range.

I bought a '71 model for $35 back in the late 80s, still running the stock 32 ohm Oxfords. I modded it from its solid state rectifier to a GZ34. I discovered an unused winding in the power transformer, and discovered the tranny was a holdover from earlier tube rectified amps, so I punched a hole in the chassis where a rectifier tube would've gone. I know, it's sacrilege but it looks factory. And nobody sneers at a tube rectifier over solid state. I see all Fender tube amps are going way up, even the Tens, so grab one if you find one. Probably one of the most pedal-friendly amps out there.

    • @breilly66

Def a pedal happy amp. No weird reactions with the hectic fuzz pedals and reverb. A great value and only getting better. Agreed!

So how does it sound now with the gz34 tube rectifier added

    • @Voodoo66Chile
      @Voodoo66Chile Місяць тому +1

Agree! I really tire of the over used term "pedal platform" for many amps these days but this amp is the epitome of "pedal platform". It's has the Fender tone but colors guitars, pickups and pedals VERY little, my pedals haven't sounded better than thru this amp. I never realized what a difference a guitar cable could make until using this amp, I can hear differences between several of my cables which I used to scoff at the idea of cables of the same or similar length sounding different...
I love this amp, I love the stock CTS 32ohm 10" speakers (mine are insanely broken in/worn but sound absolutely beautiful and lively at all volumes) and the ported cab has a unique sound all it's own that I haven't heard in another amp... Great amp and just a matter of time before these get discovered by the masses.

There it is, that tone. Normally I hear p90s and they’re just a bit too dark (or realistically, not bright enough) for me, but now i realise that Fender amps with those 10” speakers is what I was looking for. Loads of demos with Marshall type amps and 12” speakers never really flattered me, even though i’d heard p90 based tones that were plenty bright. I found my cure.

Actually that Les Paul Special looks a LOT like an early nineties one. These usually had P100 pick-ups (Stacked humbucker "P90"), which are significantly brighter than a real P90. So if you need bright P90 sounds, get some P100 instead, and enjoy the much lower hum.

I remember buying one of these as a teen from a pawn shop back in '04 for about $300, of course, back then, people were still turning their noses up at Silverfaces because they weren't blackfaces. In reality, the only difference was the added mater volume in the silverface. In any case, I had mine modified to have an extra gain stage. It was essentially a Plexi with 4x10s. Man I miss it.

Magical amp. You would have to go through it to make it reliable, and while you're there add a switchable or variable negative feedback loop, and there is probably one side of a preamp tube unused, so install a reverb tank in the bottom of that bad boy. It's not hard to clean the jacks, tube bases and pots yourself. 4x10s really move some air.

Another value buy?? Not as cheap as this one but a 62 FENDER CONCERT uses the same magical transformer as the 59 Bassman - I have both amps and I think the early Concert sounds about 85% as good as the 59 Bassman. You can get a nice Concert for 3500 or so - far less than tha nthe 9-12K a 59 Bassman will cost. Plus they have that killer harmonic tremelo/vibrato. Add an outboard reverb or delay and you have a sweeter sounding Super Reverb. Also MUSICMASTER BASS AMP is nice for guitar for recording/practice , not loud enough to gig in a big room - all tube.

It's nice to see the Bassman Ten getting some recognition a bit more now days.
I have a 1973 Bassman Ten Silverface in a custom made 1x12 enclosure with a older Jensen C12K. Still has the original caps but a year ago had 2 new output tube bases fitted and a resistor. Rest of the amp is 1973 internally.
It sounds great everytime I use it. Weather it's a gig or recording with at home with a mic in front. It always gives killer tone.
For me personally its all about the 2nd channel Bass input. Pre volume at 10 always, Treble 3, Middle Between 6 and 7 Bass 6 always and Bright Switch On.
I've found a full new valve kit I'm going to buy for her. When the JJ kit arrives I'll put them in and hopefully it should have a new lease of life with all brand new fresh valves throughout.
Don't get me wrong though even now as it is it sounds seriously good and brings the tone everytime. 🔥 Band volume is Master on 6. seems to be the magic number.
I have a handwired King of Tone clone V4 which I run left side of pedal on the whole time (gain at 10 oclock) as it gives it a really nice lift and pronunciation in the tone then kick in the right side of KOT clone for killer blues solo tone or instead a Way Huge Conspiracy Theory OD for that Klon vibe.
Reverb wise I use a Jrocket Boing Spring Reverb all the way. Sounds glorious.
All my board goes through the front outstandingly with no issues or excess noise.
I got my Bassman Ten how it came already in a 1x12 enclosure and I paid £500 for it.

Just 1 mix knob to blend how much verb you want coming through the amp and it does the 1 thing outstandingly. Sounds how a proper reverb should sound. Me personally I only wanted one good reverb as being a blues player and groove, the Jrocket is where it's at. Bossdd500 does everything else if wanted delays or anything.
