Based on the current state of Star Wars in Disney’s hands and the current state of Total War, this would either be the greatest game ever or the greatest disaster ever!
Two negatives makes a positive, right?
Disney no longer creates. It lectures, propagates, and destroys, so I'm betting it's a disaster
agreed i don't think the current state of ether will turn out well. for one thing i would say legends has two eras that would work much better the old republic era with all its factions and legendary characters or post galactic empire with all its factions and legendary characters. clone wars, civil war, or disney post civil war don't have nearly enough of characters or factions to make a good roster.
Idk why we keep thinking Disney is some hivemind conglomerate. The Total War devs are still the Total War Devs, Disney is just letting them use the IP.
There is literally no 'Disney's hands' in this.
Great general comment genius 🤦
19 Jedi doomstack incoming XD
*dies by blaster fire of 19 units of b1 *
Okoii 19 Jedi when?
20 ISD Doomstack
“Hey guys! LegendOfTotalWar here and I’ll be rating your 19 Jedi doomstack. . .”
pshhh the 501'st units would whoop 19 normal jedi
Just addressing 7:30. My sources did mention Total War Star Wars before the IGN leak. But we spoke very little about it and it seemed in VERY early development so I didn't think it was worth mentioning at this stage until things were a little more concrete. For example in the case of WW1 total war, which was supposed to be coming out late this year or early next year; it's been all but cancelled. It's not coming any time soon if at all. So when I said it was the next Total War game coming that was the information at the time, but things change. In all honesty I was far more interested in the future of Warhammer 3 and 40K to dive deeper into the what ifs of a Star Wars game that's not coming for at least 5 years.
Doesn't EA still hold the license or did disney actually remove it from them?
I'd prefer a TW Middle-Earth
Unfortunately it’s probably never gonna happen because of how expensive the LOTR IP is.
WHFB > LOTR
Stay classy my friends.
Lord of the Rings is to Similar to Warhammer. I prefer a Song of Ice and Fire for Total War.
Elves, ents, trolls, goblins, orks, dragons, dwarfs.... Warhammer already has too many similar themes and characters. It would feel like a re-hash.
Are you aware of the Medieval 2 Third Age Mod? I played it ia bit and the little bit I experienced wasn't bad. TW old schoolers prefer medieval 2's systems/interfaces, if you didn't play that when it was new you may not like that aspect of it. It's likely the closest thing you're going to find to what you're looking for.
Id be fine with it, I imagine having the high ground gives +50 to attack and defence this time.
Unless your Obi-Wan. Then it doesn't matter. Just ask Darth Maul.
Yes but you also get -10 line of sight and -10 Reaction Speed... again, unless your Obi-Wan.
5-10 years ago, I would have been on board with this, no question. But, Disney has managed to achieve the impossible for me: they've made me completely uninterested in new Star Wars content.
It also doesn't make sense to me that DIsney would invest in a Total War title, given how they've handled the IP in video games up to this point. Lucasarts used to contract with AA studios on a wider range of lower budget projects, and as a result you have at least one Star Wars game in almost every genre you can think of. What got me interested in 40k is that GW has been adopting this method with their games. Disney has been exclusively contracting with AAA studios to make games with mass appeal up to this point, and as a result have only made 5 games that I can remember (2 battlefronts, 2 "jedi" games, and that upcoming Outlaws). Total War, despite whatever success and popularity it has achieved, is unlikely to ever be big enough to get the kind of broad appeal that Disney wants to pay for. This all being the case, total war 40k is what I was expecting, and what I would rather CW makes.
I have a feeling someone saw 40k stuff, didn't know what it was and assumed it was star wars.
Edit: Also Zerk, if you want some examples of how a star wars total war might work Watch Clone Wars, especially the movie that came out before the show.
I was thinking the same, guess time will tell
Those formations scenes are just deploying, the battles itself dont follow that total war formula (ancient/medieval to early modern warfare)
In my opinion there are several things that "might" make a Total War Star Wars difficult. (in no order)
1. The constant comparison to Empire at War. (I dont wanna go into details, since that could have its own video due to the amount of things to discuss)
2. Canon vs Legend. That alone makes the setting tricky. The amount of source material is big.
3. Timeline. Zerk had many examples in this video. Old Republic, Clone Wars, Civil War, New Movie setting and the Mandalorian. As of now there was little example of things from other eras appearing at the same time (Respanse from Warhammer is an example). It would be cool to have the clone army fight the First Order. Wouldnt make much sense.
4. Factions. There were never "many" factions or races fighting for dominance in Star Wars compared to other settings.
5. Space combat.
6. The jump from world conquest to galaxy conquest.
I'm appalled at just how little people know about Empire at War.
Right, it's basically a blue print how to do it
Great game! Ah, the good ol' days...
@@Minifutzi_o.O 100%
Space combat is more likely than ground combat. The only reason to do a Star Wars TW game is to capitalize on the fact that Empire at War is popular to this day (specifically the space part of it, too), so they're much more likely to pursue that first and foremost.
Was hoping on a Total War 40k, somewhere between WH3 and Stellaris but in the 40k scenario, would be amazing to see.
I know we already have Battle for Middle Earth Games for Lord of the Rings but a Total War style Lord of The Rings game would be cool and its very similar to Warhammer in the mythical sense
1000% agree
Too bad that they are no longer available. I remember playing the first game as a child and i loved it. The CD got lost and i can't finf BFME 1 anywhere. I have BFME 2 and Rise of The Witch King tho.
@@sauronplugawy3866on MODB you can find launcher to those games and you can play. If you want tutorial like "how to install" there is one german yt channel that shows the process, unfortunately i don't remember his nick but you can type maybe "BFME LAUNCHER". Hope you can play it again mate
@@sauronplugawy3866you can easily get free copies, I have the keys, but my disk broke so I dont need a keygen at least
Now I'm not saying they need to copy Empire at War, but...
Seriously though, they'll need to hit both land and space battles spot on. Large scale fleet battles are a must.
Thing is, everything you listed as "things they'd need" to make the game systems work are also what they'd need to make a 40k game work, and I would MUCH rather have that. Star wars always inclines more towards heroic narratives, where 40k is a war-based IP by design and has actually tabletop wargame rules for the devs to reference and draw inspiration from.
40K would be my first choice for where CA should go next for fictional IP. It's the logical next step. They have a good relationship with GW and a loyal fanbase in place. It seems like a win-win.
I hope this is just a bad joke.
Our sci-fi armies marching on the battlefield would look pretty silly, and combat vehicles would look even sillier.
They make this nonsense because they hope to sell with the SW logo. (This is itself necrophiola)
We've been waiting for Medieval 3 for 10+ years...
Star Wars would make for a good strategy game if it was similar to company of heroes or Dawn of war.
Using smaller armies that use cover and buildings to their advantage. But total war uses massed Armies on open battlefields that inevitably use melee combat.
In stark contrast in star wars you can’t just have lines of people standing in neat lines and shooting eachother. You’d need to rework battles significantly.
But in 40k You can...Fix bayonets
They did do that though in Napoleon and Empire though
Have you not heard of Empire at War
Star Wars Total War, set entirely on Tatooine (so CA can continue neglecting naval battles) during the GCW. 2 factions and a bunch of Jawa rogue armies and an occasional krayt dragon. 10/10
He brought up cover. I didn’t see any one of those thousands of clone on geniuses taking cover, they were running head first at the drones.
"You can't have rectangular shaped rank and file Stormtroopers attacking a bunch of rank and file Droids. It would just look really stupid"
That just sums up every Clone Wars era battle
If space combat was a thing it should be empire at war style
Rank and file is how they did the battles in the prequels and The Clone Wars series. A Napoleon style game set during the Clone Wars could work.
Naval combat was fantastic in Fall of the Samurai.
hate it, the AI just bombard player's settlement all the time, making it impossible to build anything. no building, no money, and no navy to fight back.
Maintaining the navy doesn't produce anything, it just prevents you from losing more.
and the best navy tactics to prevent loss is simply recruit three ironclad, immediately go backwards after the battle started and let the front cannon do its work, not much fun in that.
Personally im trying to control my expectations, because as a rumor i don't want to take it as a certanty ana also becaus it may become very different as i imagine it even if it becomes true. It could also be a disaster, who knows, let's hope it is really what they are working on and let's hope it will be a great game.
On this current total war engine in WH3 this game would be very hard to pull off. I can't wait to see battle droid and clone platoons advancing into melee as they have "no LOS" of eachother on flat terrain like WH3 gunpowder units.
40k it could work as they have melee and ranged mixed heavily in there
I hope more than anything we just get a better engine than what we have available now. But i adore Star wars and hope its done justice.
I would be happy with Total War taking a similar battle approach to Company of Heroes. I can't see it being done in any other way. Being on a smaller scale we could even see battles indoors or on ships, although there is an argument that thus wouldn't very TOTAL WAR at all but hey either way I'm happy for the current formula to evolve.
I personally think a Total War : Star Wars, would have to overcome too many obstacles to be considered a truly viable option for the future of the franchise.
But, like you said, they'd have to overhaul the sh*t out of their current gameplay to fit the canon of Star Wars to make it work.
And by that point, between the need to adapt to space battles and ground battles, you'd have to basically turn it into a different game from Total War.
Which could be a good thing, no doubt about that! I just don't think the current battle/campaign system would work with field and settlement battles with the ENORMOUS amounts of ranged units running around, not without a cover system of sort.
Game releases, it's just 10 different Gungan civilizations fighting over Naboo (Only they do linear warfare).
I wonder if these are rumors, or if these are actually "feelers" CA is sending out there to see how people react to them?
I think that for a total war setting it could be great in the battles for exemple, we could see at the same time a ground and an aerial battle with infantry, heavy armored vehicles, light space ship like tie fighter and large cruiser space ship. Or they could make something like Empire at War maybe
The empire and the rebel are never on the same scale of power in lore, where the rebel are basically hiding from the empire all the time. if you wish to put them as opponents for a total war game, much and maybe too much restrictions would be needed for the empire fractions. Otherwise what would stop empire player from going directly to the rebel base (whose location can be known from the movies) and blow them all up?
Seems unlikely. Apart from the only source is "trust me bro", there's no way Sega could get the SW licence and keep it a secret.
What I would like to see would be Total War Age of Sigmar. With the eight realms they could do interesting, insanely giant maps. Some units of Warhammer 3 would be there too, as well as many new ones, and whole new factions.
As an OG Star Wars fan. I am super not interested and think all Disney SW "content" should be erased and pissed on for twelve days straight.
They’re gonna make it a 90 unit storm troopers vs 90 unit rebel game by the looks of how CA is handling titles now
Dont know how they would make it work and make it still feel like a Total war game.
I think they should stick with Warhammer and do a 40k version. Not that much into Star Wars. But I understand the appeal for those who are…
But nothing compares to smashing elves with….. well anything ;-)
Star Wars, 40K and WW1 are all shooting eras where melee still matters, right? You could imagine similar engine challenges.
Problem is the rumors have them working on two or three games right now, which given how many people they lost makes me worried about multiple underfed projects.
I was initially not really considering about Total War Star Wars, but the more I think about it, the more I think it can completely work, so starting to jump on a bit of hype
I stated that Total War may, in fact, be heading towards the Star Wars Universe during TWW2.
Almost immediately afterwards, I was bombarded with vitriol from pigment starved basement dwellers calling me anything and everything that [they think] would hurt my feelings.
Joke is on them: I only have two feelings - Anger and *_RAGE._* Neither of which were an issue simply because I found their petulant screeching to be rather pleasing.
Nevertheless, it seems my prediction may be coming to fruition. I bet that foot fungus tastes pretty bad now after everyone got worked up for nothing.
Stay classy my friends.
I love starwars and would play The Empire with siths and imperial agents and stuff
In terms of gameplay, the Total War standard would need some tweaks, but not as much as you might think.
Ground battles would take place on more restrictive maps, mostly in urban settings. No more wide open plains, except for in the obligatory Geonosis map.
I'm picturing squad-sized units, with some vehicle options and a variety of off-map support, for example artillery.
With maps featuring more obstructions, the game's line-of-sight enemy detection would encourage clever movement, scouting moves, and *holding the high ground.*😂 And it would (should) discourage turtling and "hill-camping" (though I imagine it would be a building, rather than an actual hill).
A greater focus on squad-based movement through the maps should differentiate the game from its history- and fantasy-themed older siblings, without needing to sacrifice what people come to Total War for: Big battles.
Smaller units doesn't have to mean fewer people on the battlefield.
Unit AI and pathfinding would absolutely need a great deal of improvement.
It has been passable-at-best across the series, and an urban or semi urban or urban-like (like a starship interior) setting would require something far more sophisticated.
I gotta wonder what the factions would be.. Rebels, Imperial, the Hutts, Mandafrigalorians, Ewok/Wookie/Care Bear alliance? There were just never many.. large multi-world factions going on at the same time, they'd have to be essentially writing new Disney-esque style lore to make it work. WW1 I could see.. working after a fashion, trench warfare would definitely be different. Teenage me would be going out of my mind at the prospect of Total war going Star wars and Warhammer 40k, now though I'm more pessimistic thinking about all the wrong turns each company and IP has gone down lately.
Makes me wonder Ships in space like TIE Fighters replace Naval Battles & in the era where futuristic firearms would be much more face pace than Napoleon's
Creative Assembly is not just Total War, I think it would be more like a Dawn of War RTS game
If this has as many passionate people behind it as Warhammer Total War and the same modding customizability, then this will be the best Star Wars game in a long while!
I'm all here for it! I've been waiting for this since Shogun 2!
A Star Wars Total War game would be the game I wanted as a kid that I knew would never actually happen. If this game is real I can't even begin to express how much it would take over my life
Honestly, this would be a good way for CA to figure out a lot of the issues in making a sci-fi Total War without risking a bad result on 40k. Make the mistakes with Star Wars & build off of it for 40k.
On a related note: does the latest Battlefront feature creeps (grunt soldiers that are bots) yet? I feel like they're missing a trick if it doesn't.
I thought an EAW remake was in the works? Could it be the same thing?
Empire at war is 18 years old or so, it would be awesome to see a new Star Wars strategy game.
I'd probably put it in the old republic era. Vibro blades for melee units, we have a sith army and republic army. Potentially lots of Jedi and sith depending on what you set it
I'm a hardcore Total War fan and a hardcore Star Wars fan (before the Disney Era), so putting them together will be the ultimate marriage.
Personally, I'm VERY skeptical about this Star Wars stuff. I know that many would like great strategy, but in my opinion this universe does not have that much to offer. Most (if not all) large nations/races use the same tactics anyway, with an emphasis on distance. This type of fights would require an advanced cover system and the use of group fighting tactics by AI units (I have never seen anything like this in any game, even at a satisfactory level). Additionally, many battles in this universe took place on many levels, including circumplanetary space. I don't see any way to reproduce this scale even satisfactorily in the current TW game engine. Therefore, it would probably require a completely new and innovative engine, even for our times. I don't know if we can expect something like that from the manufacturer. I wouldn't want the game to be a flop even more, because I feel sorry for the fans and lost hopes.
I hope that the Multiplayer for the new Star Wars game allows factions to cross-battle one another, or maybe you could put a legendary lord(like for the droids) in the Galactic Civil War setting, and you can play as a remnant droid army idk as they try to remake the separatist alliance if they do want to make the rumored Star Wars game that be mighty interesting for me.
Ranged warfare seems like a difficult problem to solve. I could see them doing a WWI game to work out the kinks of gun battles and then going all in on a Star Wars game. Idk how they’d pull it off, but I’m excited to see it.
They have TW Napoleon which was ranged focused and had ship battles.
Realistically 40k makes more sense, especially since CA already has a great partnership with GW. I think the leaker must be mistaken.
IMO a Total War Star Wars without space combat would be like beef chili without chili. Something is just missing.
The tombstone on total war
Not that this would ever happen, but Total War: Hyrule would work really well.
There are so many IPs that could work. But the licences to develop these games would make it very hard to develop them properly. Star wars is the best example.
Why settle for hamburger when you could have prime rib?
Seriously 40k is a much more detailed universe, and more easily accessible
If it's either 40k or Star Wars, it's gonna be, like you said, completely different and new because the campaign map wouldn't work in space.
I was hoping to simply have Total War: Middle Earth (Or Total War: Lord of the Rings if that name is better for marketing) next because it would be quite easy with what they already have to make and really cool! Battle for Middle Earth II was a great game back in the day
Doubt it'll ever happen, but while we're more likely to get a CoH/DoW or EaW style game, I wish we'd instead get something more like Wargame/WARNO for land battles, and/or Homeworld for space.
i can See The Clone Wars as a Base Game Then the Imperium as First Big DLC and Then The Old Republic as 2tend Big DLC just Like Shogun 2 with the DLCs
Star Wars Empire at War was a banger of a game! If they can do something like that with a fresh coat of paint then that would be perfect!
Well, the only army that would need to be in rank and file would be the droid army.
Maybe they can put the Yuuzahn Vong Faction in there as a playable faction
I have no idea at all how this would even work as a total war game
This feels it would be more like a CoH game just on a larger scale e.g division size compared to company size in CoH.
So the rumors were saying TW Warhammer 40k and TW WW1, but now it's suddely TW Star Wars instead?
EDIT: Ok, so apparantly it's all of them. WW1 has apparantly been delayed due to it requireing a new engine, which proved to be too expensive to make or something, so apparantly it's Warhammer 40k first then Star Wars sometimes later.
The major source of this "leak" had factually wrong information in the post, though, like WH1 and WH2 + DLC selling poorly (CA themselves stated that they sold very well and was what kept them in the green), and WH3 originally being scheduled for release in 2018 (*might* have been originally, but definately not this version with KIslev and Cathay).
It also missed some other rumored titles that has been talked about seriously like Medieval 3 or Empire 2 (maybe cancelled, who knows?), but I wouldn't trust this information too much until it's backed up by some other sources, but who knows. With the amount of "leaks" and rumors currently going on, I would just wait and see, as everything seems a bit uncertain at this point.
i think if they want to make it work their are 2 things they will have in terms of lore
ignore disney canon and go with legends specifically ether going with the old republic era with all its factions and characters or post civil war with all its factions and characters given i really don't think disney canon or the clone wars or civil war eras have enough characters or factions to make a good roster for examle
post civil war
new republic heroes and sub factions luke, leia, han, wedge, kyle kataran etc
imperial remants like those led by thrawn, sidious and the various other warlords,
forgotten tribe of the sith,
the vong
major crime lords like the hutts, black sun, Zann Consortium,
and a good few others whose name i can't remember at the moment
the old republic
the old republic and their various jedi and military leaders
sith empires weather its the ancient ones such as the one led by marka ragnos and the others or the one led vitiate
the hutt empire/cartel or the exchange
Mandalorians
eternal empire
maybe going further back and include groups like rakata
the various dark jedi led groups
and a good number more probably that currently not thinking off
I think 40k is more predictable than SW. But if they do it I hope they'll do a smaller squad size than TW Warhammer. Maybe also a cover system and a lot of terrain? Space battles would be cool in a TW system. Empire at War did this pretty okey
Would it be in first person and 3rd person or the old fashion PC way
I agree with a lot of what you said. They need to get creative with how combat is done, but if they get this right it will open up a lot of potential games for the future. Star Wars, Warhammer 40k, WWI and WWII.
I agree that they should drop the numbers way down, and create some sort of cover system. Maybe kind of like alien dark descent? But like groups of units instead of individual marines.
If this happens, I hope it's based on the expanded universe, and not on the Disney new lore
I commend you on your cutscene choices, sir.
damn that SW trailer slaps! Id cant see Star Wars working that well as a Total War, outside of maby the clone wars or the old republic - but Disney isnt really big on that and they are moslty focussing on kids and teens... Total War 40k would just make so mutch more sense, especially as the damons are already there. Well see i guess
When i first heared about tw w40k i was afraid because i thought about it in the setted tw style and i assumed the squad based combat with hide focus wont fit well. But since inheared about ww1 or sw i think 40k would be fot me most.. i am curious what they realize. You hat some good points hiw they could change the combat so lets see
if you have a total war: star wars, then you must include jedi as part of it, therefore making the theoretically rare and few jedi that survived the order 66 flooding the galaxy if the player recruits them a lot, either as lord or unit
The thing is if they can get out of the melee combat then they also open up their opportunity for many more so i hope they try something new. Doesn't really matter if it turns out good coz I think they should try.
4:50 "total war has no competittion"
I never understood that. there are millions of civilization clones on the market but not a single developer tried to copy the total war formula even though the total war series is doing blunder after blunder since decades. yeah total warhammer is awesome but the hardcore fans also hate it because it does not have the same mechanics as the old titles.
There is a small indie team of two people who made two series of D&D inspired games with turn based empire building and autobattle rts combat that is kind of total war-ish. Its dominions and conquest of elysium. but it´s 2d pixel sprites with litterally 2 frames of animation. I love those games and i do not understand why no one else tries to copy that formula.
I hope so! Let’s go!
Before LOTR? I will start a fucking riot
i was hoping for a 40k game
Total war: Star Wars will be great to get some younger kids into the Total War franchise but I hope they soon follow it up with something enjoyable for adults
Really cant see a point to this.. Melee is not a thing really, so it is only moving ranged troops around = map will have to be mirrors or it is simply a who get's the better map side.
Only 2 factions really, not a lot to work with, sure you could add small rebel factions, but really, they all gonna be close to the same.
And if all they can do as a draw is putting in established characters.. Then there is literally nothing to the game.
This is going to pass like a fart in a storm..
The historic titles can’t compete with the fantasy wow factor that is warhammer. 40k or SW, we do not know, but the future of CA games is scifi or fantasy.
Mandalorian doomstack! this is the way!
They did something similar for Star Wars galactic battle grounds it was based of age of empires 2 game play so it’s possible. It would need a lot of refinement though I think
i still see taking the formula of empire at war to make it in total war :O it work very goood
Think Star Wars would work better in a Company of Heroes styles (1st CoH). You could have squads spaced out and give/pick up different weaponry for each, vehicles and "hero" characters such as jedi and sith as single entities.
I can't even imagine what it should look like.
Short answer: No
Long answer: sources are shite so be doubtful
it would be insane and i'd love it
The 40k rumor seems far more credible than Star Wars, they have a relationship with GW and there's a decent balance of melee and ranged.
Total War Star Wars is definitely going to be difficult to pull off with everything that Star Wars is. I feel Empire at War is how Star Wars strategy games should be as it best captures the feel of large scale Star Wars battles. So I'm not sure if Total War Star Wars can be pulled off successfully.
Clone Wars is just rank and file combat. Masses of droids and clones running at eachother. I think it's best to use the films as reference point rather than other games that each have their own limitations and interpretations. Battles in the films would suit a Total War stye combat. Mix between Warhammer and Fall of the Samurai.
Baby Yoda is OP. Such a small hit box.
I feel like WW1 is more doable than the rest mainly because of the Great War mod for Napoleon was pretty good
Can You Conquer The Galaxy With Only Gonk Droids?
