It is silly for VW to adopt the French way of doing the glovebox shared with fuse box. They are trying to portrait an executive image for this ID7 but lazed on moving the fuse box to the driver's side at the expense of the RHD market.
I have been subscribed to your channel for a while now and just wanted to compliment you on how far you've come as a UA-camr and car reviewer. This review was really informative, but your personality still comes through. You are starting to approach the quality-level of well-established car review UA-cam channels.
I have a BMW i4 and wouldn’t consider swapping to the ID7. As you touched on, VW’s design department need a bit of inspiration, they have the designers elsewhere in the group, for example the Cupra Born looks better inside and out compared to it’s sibling ID3. They could do with a unique selling point or be competitive on price but they seem happy to sit back and let others lead the way on both fronts. Great Video though Andrew 👍
BMW should lose some LEDs in their cockpit. They are much too blinki-blinki. The front has two big holes in it. When will BMW close those? And when will they price their cars for the masses and not for the real german gentleman company owner?

For some reason, one of my cameras was set to 50fps. I've no idea why, but that caused a slight chipmunk effect in the internal shots. I took ages trying to sort it but gave up in the end! And I agree with you that premium, for me at least, means classy tactile buttons. It seems those days are long gone based on all the new cars coming along now. Buttons are a dying breed.
The Korean brands seem to be holding onto proper buttons, (switches, dials, tumble, toggle) along with where appropriate touch sensitive screen , jog dial and haptic. Look at the variety of buttons and switch gear on an GV60 for instance - it’s pure ergonomics. The right control for the appropriate operation. It’s a master class on how it should be done.
First-time watcher here, Andrew, and loved your review. One thing I always wish reviewers would do though (and apologies if I missed you saying) is make it crystal clear which features are standard vs. optional. I have BMW i4 eDrive 40. The i4 can be comfortable and also very dynamic and build quality is superb. The ID7 does not have a sports oriented suspension sadly. Unlike the DCC used in the Cupra VZ.
Good review Andrew, I like the way you relate to every day driving, and the interface with the common controls. Having owned two Volkswagen Passats in the past, this is probably the type of EV car I would have chosen when I was working and pounding the miles on the motorways. Lots of tech and toys, relatively high price point, but for loyal VW fans it will probably tick the box. Particularly love the seat adjustments and massage feature on this car. 👍😎
I think the design language is moving in the right direction, but still not quite there, especially with retaining the haptics. Much prefer the Audi and Skoda offerings over this. Best review I've seen of the ID.7 yet Andrew, well done mate!
Well done Andrew, another great review, fair and honest. I'm really glad that you enjoyed the driving experience, as an ID5 owner I think this car is great looking, it reminds me of the old Rover fastback that launched back in the eighties, definitely a step up from the other ID offerings.😊

For motorway efficiency if someone wants to know, I'd recommend the Battery Life UA-cam channel, he has bought an ID7 and done efficiency comparison tests with the Ioniq 6 and Model Y.
Good review, will be interesting to see what the estate version is like too. Parts of this remind me of my Enyaq, which is no surprise as they’re both MEB platform cars. The infotainment system is very similar, and the ambient lighting, which I really like. One thing I noticed with the ambient lights which I thought was quite cool, was if you open a door, it changes the light on that door to red from whatever it was set to, as a warning light for pedestrians or traffic.
massive cars aren’t really my thing but i’m sure some people will find appealing, always thought the nissan leaf kind of nailed the sweet spot for size.
Great video and good info surely will increase your subscribers as there are so many VW drivers out there who will still only buy VW so hopefully will get them into electric - yeah would be interesting how it would do on a decent motorway trip even though it's slippery I'd say around low 3's/kWh hopefully they'll give them out soon for longer so that can be checked :)
Great review. I always used to have Passat & Skoda Superb estates. Brilliant Cars. I do miss having the space now I drive electric. Leaf’s and MG ZS electric.
Not over enamoured by the looks but still tempting. Its 20cm longer than the Tesla model 3 and (after 4 years) I'm still not quite used to having such a long car. However, for the executive/sales rep/family market, this looks the part. I'm also in favour of some real buttons - touch screens are all well and good for set up, less good if you need to access anything quickly thats not automatic, or the automation is too slow - say, windscreen wipers, headlights (because its raining but not dark enough), heating controls. would have to try out the VW controls to see what its like. EV manufacturers need to get together and come up with some realistic way of measuring range. My Model 3 is supposed to have 295 miles worth of range (even seen it quoted as 305). Its certainly north of 200. If you charge to 100% and drive it until its 0% I guess you should make 250miles / 400 kms but nobody drives any car until its empty. Still, quoting ranges 50-100 miles more than that is optimistic. I take all the ranges (especially WLTP) with a fairly large pinch of salt.
I have a Polestar 2 currently, up for swapping on the company car scheme in 6 months. ID.7 Tourer, Ioniq 5 and maybe Nissan Ariya are on the list, as I have 3 sons each above 5' 10" who will need to fit across the back seat. I think the Ioniq will take it on rear shoulder space, but the load lugging of the ID.7 is very attractive.
An estate IONIQ 5 would be a wonderful thing! Of the cars you mentioned, I'd still go for the IONIQ 5 although I'm really impressed with the ID.7. It's a more comfortable ride than the 5 (and that was already pretty comfortable).
Really good review Andrew, excellent production and erudite description....didnt expect to be persuaded that vw made a decent ev so this is a bit of a surprise! Estate version sounds tempting too but I suspect either version is really too big in the metal so I'll just dream for a while...😴 Youll get a second viewing from us when I show it to my wife later.👍👏
Andrew, have you seen or considered volvo's compact EX30 crossover? I realize you have a family and frequently road trip, so luggage space is a major consideration.
I looked at the ID 3 and 4 three weeks ago and didn't like the interior, but the ID7 interior looks much nicer. When trying to pick a a car I looked at the Fisker Ocean Sport and Smart#1 and picked the Smart#1, hopefully you'll cover these in due course, I love the Smart#1
@@MrEVHi, If you can get to Westfield White City in West London, you can test drive one of about 6, well worth a look, they've a store there. Looking forward to seeing the reviews
Great review overall, you nailed that part. Personally I think this car is just too expensive for what it is. Might be a great buy on a used car market.
This is obviously aimed towards the lease market, however based on the list price VW have really misjudged. This is currently around the mid £700's/month based on a 4 year lease which is senior manager levels, who are always going to choose Tesla / Audi / BMW / Mercedes over this. VW are a family brand and that market would not be spending this sort of money for a saloon. It's about £15-20k too expensive (lease/pcp target cost circa £400-500 / month), expect to see heavy discounting from the dealers and lots of pre-reg deals on 24 plate cars coming in May/June & July onwards.
It's already dropped from the Launch edition of £56K to £51K for the Match edition. As you say, expect further discounting. Should be a good option price wise then. I was impressed when I sat in one last week.
@ma40 Iast year I bought a heavily discounted ID5 pro max, ex managers car .I saved well over ten grand on the list price.Considering the launch price,it only had 2500 miles on the clock.Definately worth the wait.
Big comfort maybe, but even bigger price! Tourer version will be £60k plus for what is really a Passat replacement. Really can’t see many buying one of these and fully expect massive depreciation within a year and massively discounted lease deals (ID Buzz has the same fate even with its desirability).
Great review really informative. I looked at the ID5 and just felt it was very bland. I've orded a Hyundai Ioniq 6 so looking forward to getting that delivered!
@@MrEV Yes definitely ask throw in some free publicity for a local dealership. I was really impressed with the styling of the new Ioniq ranges some of the best looking cars out there at the moment
Great review Mr. EV. Another VW product that just seems so let down by the design decision to force haptic buttons and screens those years ago instead of continuing the then segment leading VW physical button design language.
Having had an ID.3 with very iffy software and average and mostly disinterested service from the main dealer I'd be reluctant to have another VW. However, the ID.7 looks as it should for that sector of the market. Too large for me though.
The biggest problem with any VW is the dealer network. I’ve had two VWs. (Golf & Arteon) and used a number of dealers and literally never had a good experience from any dealer. As a contrast I’ve also had two Skodas (Octavia vRS & Superb), also used a number of Skoda dealers and never had a bad experience.
It’s an Enyaq coupe to me, a lot of shared parts, and I’m sure the touring version will be a normal Enyaq… makes sense from the same company (I love my yaq)
Nice review. I’m glad they’ve had a good go at the software side of things. I rented an I.D.3 from the MK EV experience centre back when it was open for business. Took it to Hull and back. The second day I was due to go north the infotainment system would not boot up. Nice a car a bit basic and rattly inside with decent range. The software was pants. I’ve test driven the I.D.4 and liked it a lot, but again pants software. So this puppy looks close to the mark and is very Tesla like in many ways. Questions: what is the cost of the route navigation system per annum? Can it see which spots have restaurants near by and what chargers are in use? Can it route through Europe and plan in hotels, restaurants etc. ChargeMap is the only app I’ve found that you can set filters on things like restaurants with rapid or fast chargers and the like.
Main problem for me is there are two manufactures I swore I'd never buy again ... BMW and VW. So even if either made the best car in the world, Id' never buy one.
I'd get one, although rther the Estate version or Shooting Brake whatever they'll call it. although the price puts me off a bit from parting with my Model 3
V good review andrew.......you would thing that because its silent the front would be more rounded because if you hit a pedestrian even at 5-10mph you would knee cap them NOT GOOD....overall 6/10 !! No buttons-dangerous,front design-dangerous,kwh 4.7- excellent, teslaesk sat nav-excellent,voice control-hit & miss,price-not so good but for an ev ok.....on another subject while other makers make front grilles smaller because the car doesn't need it BMW are making theirs bigger 😂😂😂😂😂.....do you think Andrew the batteries are fault for the fires OR ev owners don't really know how to charge and heat the battery BEFORE charging ?????
Yes, ordinarily I'd not compare to a Model 3 due to the size difference but it's the car most people will naturally compare this to. Really a Model S is a more suitable comparison, but there's no longer a RHD Model S!
Hi Andrew is this car based on the Enyaq they look similar if so it makes the Enyaq incredible value. Would like to have heard more of the Division Bell great album.
I think you should have mentioned the Ioniq 6. Which is a similar price point. I think I'd choose the Ioniq 6 over this though just for the 800v architecture.
I don’t know why the IONIQ 6 didn’t occur to me! Perhaps because I so rarely see them on the road. You’re right - in terms of tech, it’s hard to beat that 800v architecture.
Oh dear - you and Ida didn’t really get onto speaking terms….😄….great, useful video though (as always) 👍🏻 (It’d be a “no” from me as I’m getting up to 5mi/kWh in a Tesla M3 (RWD/LFP variant), which, if you get used to living with it, does everything pretty/very well - but I would concede that the ride might be better (although I think it’s more of a “drivers car” and really suits me) and massage seats would be 👀 nice….)
The screen behind the steering wheel is far too small. Why couldn't they have the same one that they have in the latest VW Tiguan. Apart from that the car is rather rather nice.
Andrew, nice review, would have liked have seen your assistant scowl at you but it was chilly! But lets talk real, who can afford one with the high depreciation of EV's. We paid £31k for our premium Kona 5 years ago, and they have put a new main batt into it 1 year ago. So why should we look for another car for say 5 years. Kona does everything we want.
The Kona is a cracking car! The ID.7 will primarily be used by businesses, getting them on leases. In three years there'll be some great deals on the second-hand market and it'll be interesting to see the depreciation!
Personally I see so few IONIQ 6s, I'm not sure it's really on VW's radar. That said, you're the second person who's mentioned it and I'm kicking myself for not thinking about it myself!
@@MrEV Same here, I don't think I've actually seen one on the road yet! Efficiency, swoopy body shape, and price wise though they're definitely competitors imho!
The infotainment is clear and bright but the bezels are huge. In contrast, the display on the Tesla expands to the width of the screen with very tiny bezels. The always on components are transparent. I just wish it wasn't positioned raised above the sight line of the dash. I really like the ergo active seat with the separate head rest. I just wish they came with solid back rather than the non kid kick resistant cloth. Wish it had a pair of iPad holders to retrofit a bit of entertainment to the limousine rear compartment. A power tilt/telescoping steering wheel would be nice even as an option. On the con side, I'm not at all a fan on a sunroof that doesn't open, or the trend that removes the spare tire. Another EV limitation.
Knee room in the rear looks good, but on reflection, your feet look high - so no support to the backs of your legs. I sat in an EV6 and found the same - the 'thick floor' for housing the batteries tends to actually lose leg comfort. I'm 6'4" so this is even worse for me. I can only really be comfortable in SUV styles for the seat 'height'.
ID7 is really nice, I like the design, I like how quiet it is. Unfortunately for VW, Tesla released the Highland... with matching "extras" the ID7 is far too expensive.
We have an ID.3 1sf Edition which we bought secondhand and have owned for 11 months now. I honestly do not understand all the bitching and moaning about the buttons on the steering wheel and the window switches. And, the volume and heat sliders on the bottom of the infotainment screen are perfectly fine too. I honestly think that people have to find a negative just so that they can do their favourite thing - grumble like entitled idiots.
As I said in the review, it’s something I’d probably get used to. In my opinion that doesn’t make it a good interface though. I personally prefer actual proper tactile buttons, although as costs are cut across the industry, that’s clearly going to get less common. Nothing is as crazy as Tesla removing stalks though!
@@MrEV I agree. Real buttons are better. Always were, always will be. I get it that you are just commenting on what is there but it took a couple of days to get used to them just like the controls in most vehicles new to the user. We are looking forward to the ID.2 but we'll hang on to the ID.3 for another couple of years at least. Having seen some videos on the ID.2 the controls are all changed again Crazy really.
At home! I wouldn’t ask her to drive 8 hours to and from an event, try a car she doesn’t care about, and try to arrange for someone to look after our dog and daughter all day, all for £100 ad revenue. 😀
Tesla Model 3 is a smaller car and has very good range (and full access to the fantastic Supercharger network). If you don't fancy a Tesla, the Hyundai Kona, Kia Niro, and MG4 are other options (all smaller than the Tesla) with pretty good ranges.
The Korean brand EGMP vehicles have good range, great charging speed and great standard tech - the EV6 Horizon in 4.680m in length is saloon like, the ionic 5 4.635m and great for headroom, rear cabin space and boot space (more boxy) the GV60 is 4.515m much more compact and luxurious but still ample rear cabin space and boot space ( a 4 member family into camping might struggle with the space offered by the GV60 but a 3 member family or less perfect) all do 300+ miles and have 800v architecture for really fast charging. The options list can get you HUD, self parking, HDA2 and a suite of cross traffic and advance camera safety features. These are pricy new but future proofed to an extent but some great second deals will be available now as all three have been available in the UK for atleast 18 months.
Good package but overpriced. Agree that VW don’t get enough credit - think the software was so shoddy in those early models, it pissed a lot of people off. Also, apart from the Buzz, the design is a bit meh. Saying all that, nobody can say that VW aren’t committed to the transition.
Yes, the Buzz is the only VW with a head-turning design. The rest are relatively bland. That said, it's not like I've ever found VWs to be that exciting!
Sorry Andrew, but it's not a full review before we get to hear what Mrs. EV thinks about it!

Excellent review. I think the Skoda Superb will have as much leg room inside. I still prefer my 2018 MK3 superb diesel... 600miles on full tank 😊
Really good review Andrew, excellent production and erudite description....didnt expect to be persuaded that vw made a decent ev so this is a bit of a surprise! Estate version sounds tempting too but I suspect either version is really too big in the metal so I'll just dream for a while...😴
Youll get a second viewing from us when I show it to my wife later.👍👏
Thank you!
Andrew, have you seen or considered volvo's compact EX30 crossover? I realize you have a family and frequently road trip, so luggage space is a major consideration.
The EX30 looks great. Potentially a bit smaller than we'd need (or want) for luggage space but I will try to get one to test.
Nice review. A good effort on Volkswagens part, I'll be keeping my EV6. Cheers
I have an ID.3, which is a great car but the ID.7 would make a great addition, as the long distance car and we'd keep the ID.3 for local journeys.
Hopefully the estate version comes out soon. I’d try that over the Tesla model Y I have now.
Q3 2024 apparently.
I've not seen the Ocean in the UK yet. I'm looking forward to trying the #1 soon.
If lots of businesses end up getting them, there’ll be some fantastic ex-lease used buys in three years or so.
I love the interior of this car, I wish it was featured in the 4 and 5. I feel those cabins are a bit lacking.
Not too sure about the external look - the grey colour looks ok. Nice wee clip of Pink Floyd too.
I feel I should try and sneak in some Floyd on every video now!
Big comfort maybe, but even bigger price! Tourer version will be £60k plus for what is really a Passat replacement. Really can’t see many buying one of these and fully expect massive depreciation within a year and massively discounted lease deals (ID Buzz has the same fate even with its desirability).
as one of those in a family of 5, I miss measurements of the width of the back seat, and an evaluation of the comfort of the middle seat.
Noted - I’ll remember to do that on the next review.
Model Y here since September, fed up with the awful suspension and turning circle, might consider something else when the old lease is up.
That's interesting. I don't tend to hear many complaints from Tesla owners. I agree the Model Y ride is far too hard.
Excellent review.
Perhaps review Enyaq next ???
Hopefully this year!
Great review really informative. I looked at the ID5 and just felt it was very bland. I've orded a Hyundai Ioniq 6 so looking forward to getting that delivered!
I desperately want to try the IONIQ 6! I will ask Hyundai nicely for one.
Im not sure you're getting full use of the massage seats, unless they can go fully horizontal and you can lay face down. 😮
Great review from you as always 👏 Any idea of when the 86kWh battery model will be launched ? 🤔
It should be about the same time as the Tourer (estate) so Q3 of this year.
“If you’ve got any money left after you buy this” 😂 🔥
BTW: I have a complaint, this review is incomplete - Flaviana is missing!
Does the on windscreen projection work with Android auto/Apple carplay?
Does Google Maps show charging stations?
Just FYI, most ID cars are manual seats. Electric seats are an option that most people don’t seem to go for.
Does the native sat nav have live traffic ( & offer routes accordingly )?
I'm sure it does.
Even though not a VW fan this car does look nice. Can you compare to a M3 though? I assumed they’re much smaller.
They're both on the same MEB platform so I suppose that makes them cousins?! Yes, Division Bell is excellent!
If I still had need of my previous car, then this would suit me. But oh the over reliance of haptic controls… no thank you.
Great review though.
I think you should have mentioned the Ioniq 6. Which is a similar price point. I think I'd choose the Ioniq 6 over this though just for the 800v architecture.
But overall you gave it a good review. I loved you complaining about our weather. :D
I don’t know why the IONIQ 6 didn’t occur to me! Perhaps because I so rarely see them on the road.
You’re right - in terms of tech, it’s hard to beat that 800v architecture.
Oh dear - you and Ida didn’t really get onto speaking terms….😄….great, useful video though (as always) 👍🏻
(It’d be a “no” from me as I’m getting up to 5mi/kWh in a Tesla M3 (RWD/LFP variant), which, if you get used to living with it, does everything pretty/very well - but I would concede that the ride might be better (although I think it’s more of a “drivers car” and really suits me) and massage seats would be 👀 nice….)
How is this headroom for very tall guys like me?
Without having a charging network you can count on you can't use it for the long road trips in the US, of course.
VW are adopting NACS, right? If so, at least they'll be able to use Superchargers.
@@MrEV I hear this but I'm not sure how practical or soon this is happening.
Hi Andrew. Do you think VW are hoping to take a shot at the IONIQ 6 with this? Thank you!
Charging cable storage is great, except it's under the floor so you could have access problems when fully loaded for travel!!!! Not really so great..
I need the gtx,
People still use apple?
Does it still send you into the canal?
Apple Maps is great these days! Arguably better than Google in my experience.
That's a good point. People do berate crossovers/SUVs but they certainly have their benefits.
@@MrEV Posture is better if you can sit on a “dining table chair”, particularly as a driver needing to keep both comfortable and alert
ID7 is really nice, I like the design, I like how quiet it is. Unfortunately for VW, Tesla released the Highland... with matching "extras" the ID7 is far too expensive.
ID.7 has stalks though!
Hope Flaviana's OK. Please give her our greetings.
Thank you! She's very well and will appear in another video quite soon.
Where is Flaviana ?
At home! I wouldn’t ask her to drive 8 hours to and from an event, try a car she doesn’t care about, and try to arrange for someone to look after our dog and daughter all day, all for £100 ad revenue. 😀
Don't worry Andrew, I understood you, even if the car didn't. Obviously I'll reserve judgement until we have an Italian's perspective 😊
Amazing a car with indicator stalks and parking sensors!
i want a car that can drive pretty far, but im single so i always feel weird if i buy big cars like these. Any other options?
Is that an AutoEV collab @ 19:23 😃
I almost photobombed Bryan there!
Good review, but that’s a crazy price for a VW
