The best and most underrated Tool bass is from "Intension".
Yes sir
Maybe not best but certainly underrated
ua-cam.com/video/gXyn2pHUe7Q/v-deo.html
id have to disagree i think the best riff is schism's main riff
@@dar3algam3r52 i think disposition is my favourite
Rosetta Stoned is honestly one of the most underrated tool songs out there. That part you played where it breaks into that melodic section after the solo is breathtaking.
Everything that ever happened is underrated hey
Yep and invincible
Overwhelmed as one would be, placed in my position…
Extremely surprised to not see Schism and The Pot on this list!
those are overplayed , this is a legit list
Extremely overplayed. I was disappointed to see 46 & 2, another overplayed one.
@@dutchmastah07 just because jts overplayed doesn't mean its a bad song. The idea that a song is bad because it not only applies to the usually people who are interested in TOOL, but others as well is really sad
Yep, overplayed doesn’t mean shit. The title of the video says it also. THE most iconic riff is the opening and verse of Schism.
@@lyrasimoahahahahaha so? MOST ICONIC do you know what does it mean???
Invincible has recently become one of my favorite basslines. When the song leads into that driving bass riff with delay, it's incredibly motivating.
You should Make another video but with 10 Tool Bass riffs
Here are 10 that I like.
In no particular order:
Reflection
The Grudge
10,000 Days
Schism (bridge riff because the main riff is so overplayed, but it's still great lol)
Invincible
Descending
The Pot
Ticks & Leeches
Forty Six & 2
Jambi
No lateralus?
i also absolutely love the bass intro of The Pot....such a cool line!
Hell yea
Kiesel bass too. Dang I remember when you use to play the Agile.
Everytime I hear the Aenima bass line I can hear Justin saying "pass pass the goddang butter, pass the goddang butter".
Great playing and great lesson.
I gotta say, just like with Adam, so much of Justin's charm is his instantly recognizable tone.
And Paul set the precedent of Tool bass tone.
Paul D’Amour wrote the baselines for Aenima and undertow albums. I love Justin too. You kind of see the progression they made since Justin joined. But I have to give Paul his props. The entire undertow and Aenima album bass is still recognizable. Sober for example. However, tool is my favorite band of all time and I really enjoyed this video! You did a amazing job! 😁
Paul partially wrote the bass parts for 2.5 songs on Aenima...That's it.
You forgot to mention that Paul also was on Opiate.
I just kinda want to say thanks to Mr. Axe of creation. Tool has been one of my favorite bands for about a year now and I picked up guitar two summers ago. (Summer before freshman year of high school. Im a sophomore now). Im self taught which has been both a blessing and a curse. Your Tool lessons have really helped me to understand their music and improve my skills. Keep up the great work man!
Been following you and recommending you for about 5 years now. I just started learning how to play bass instead of guitar. I searched tool bass riffs and thank god, got you again
For me, I get chills from Schism. His bass in that song is just extraordinary.
You can say "It's 1 of their best tracks" about so many Tool songs. The bass riff in Tempest when Adam Jones is soloing has got to be one of the "best" riffs also. Simple, yet so effective. It's a perfect foundation (at least to my ear).
Justin wrote 46&2 as part of his audition for Tool.
You play that stretch in 46&2 so effortlessly....
It's not very hard
@@Adam666... That F note change up is actually pretty difficult for most amateurs.
Love this video, buddy! Perfectly played, you’re the FKN best!!!
Great video!! 👍
Nice work Greg, we all have our fav's and 5 is such a small number.
Great video - thanks for sharing!
The Pushit Salival baseline kicks ass
Excellent job and you are always very inspiring ! More bass tabs please ! Many thanks !
Great video man straight to the point
My fav bass line is Disposition/Riflection one, but each time I listen to a Tool's song I think "ok, this is the best", impossible choose one
More please!!! Would love to get your take on the some of the full songs mate!!
Surprised you didn't do the bass riff and its variant at the start of The Pot, the one the guitar plays later in the song. Also the 'running' riff through Reflection.
Yeah The Pot is the best
Could listen to these all day . More please
Nice work, Greg!
Love it!
Great cover man keep going with em 🤘🤘👌u tough me so much tool
excellent. More of Tool please.
The intro to The Pot is the first riff I always play when I pick up my bass. It just "feels good" to play.
Perfect timing for this video... I was just trying to talk my wife into letting me get a bass a few hrs ago...
Love your top 5!! If I could add any to the list it would be the whole section of Parabola when Maynard sings "twirling round with this familiar parabol" and also the "Cold silence has..." section of Schism!
Where is Schism?? ):
Excelente video dude!
When I'm just TOOLing around on bass, I always just drone on the D and pray random Phrygian stuff on the G and C
Bass riffs are why i love Tool
Awesome
My personal favorite intension. Ugh this video seriously made me want to buy a bass and learn some tool riffs.
Dude, do it! I'm a guitar tech, and I've got guys in their 60's who just started playing after retiring because they always wanted to and never found the time. They only wish they started sooner. So what if it takes a couple years to get some Tool riffs down? Those years are gonna go by either way.
Disposition is so much fun to play
Hey wassup, nice to see you again buddy
Top 5 is definitely not enough :D also, beautiful guitar!
I feel like ticks and leeches gets slept on alot too but you could say that for most of their basslines and have a valid point
So I’ve been playing Tool on guitar for a number of years now but when I watched this video and you played the riff from Rosetta Stoned it sounded so bad ass I literally said to myself that’s it I have to buy a bass so I went and got a bass!
Rosetta stoned is my favorite song of all time!!!
You really are a great bass player
Great list but missing 10,000 days (Wings pt 2). The 2 riffs during the "give me my wings part" soooooo good.
Another great vid, maybe some bass tutorials like the guitar vids??? 👍
Forty Six & Two is literally my favorite Justice Chancellor bass line next to Schsim and The Pot. Mainly because they’re the most fun to play. I still think all of the others are right up there. Ik, the most over rated songs or w.e., but they’re damn fun to play despite how simple they are. Maybe it’s because they’re the first songs I learned years ago, idk, but they’re my go to warm up songs and how I can tell if my bass is out of tune or not.
Nice nice!!!
Great video
I mightbf wrong on this but in the Rosetta Stoned riff I'm pretty sure he goes down to the A# instead of repeating the C twice
Benjamin you’re not wrong
The timing of the first C is off as well.
By the way, I'm not trying to shit on you, I really enjoyed this video. Just wasn't sure about that. Haha. It's a mean riff
Yeeees I would not have taken you seriously if you didn't include that bass line from Rosetta Stoned. That whole part by the band is one of the greatest pieces of rock music, period.
You forgot "Schism!"
Not exactly beginner stuff though I suppose. Great video, as always!
You kinda messed up Rosetta Stoned a little. There's this guy on UA-cam (LeoBassCovers) who plays Tool bass covers really well and there you can see how it's played "right"
His version isn’t really right either. It mostly is but there are some parts that he plays completely wrong.
Edit: Nvm, I realized you were talking about the breakdown.
I'm turning my basses into High-Fives because there is no room for a dedicated low B string in my music unless I am getting it through the flick of a Double Stop Lever on a HipShot Bass Extender. It'll be interesting what I can do melodically, adding that high C, under the inspiring influences of Justin Chancellor's beautiful bass lines.
the ernie ball string theory with justin has some great parts of him playing, and I'm pretty sure the F part for 46 is on it.... it is there to hear, but the camera man pans away from the fretboard as he gets to it! why film this man's face when he is playing iconic bass parts, live, solo?!
it cuts out the second he goes to the F part and i've rageed so hard at a video
i never click on bass stuff but this is a very welcome exception ;D
oh fuck yeah, that riff from rosetta stoned is the one that came to mind when i read the title of this video and now i'm very excited it made the list
Dude, agreed. Rosetta Stoned is one of their best tracks!
Please pretty please do bass lesson for right in two!
Aw man, glad you had that Rosetta Stoned riff on here. It's my personal favorite Tool bass line. Not the most complex out there, but the BAMF scale is pushed to the max when that riff busts out
Justin is certainly top 10 if not top 5 best bassists ever!
Disposition is the best bass line of Tool
Nice vid brother. If you get a chance to watch the Ernie Ball String Theory with JT of TOOL you’ll see him playing 46 and 2.... they cut away but you hear him put that 7th fret F in there when he’s playing. And likewise I’ve seen bass players put it in there and also leave it out. I leave the interpretation to the individual I guess. Again nice vid. I’ll have to check out more of them.
From what I hear in 46&2, Justin starts playing the f after the mini build up and when guitar starts swelling after 40ish seconds.
Holy shit I just configured myself a Bass on the Kiesel website just for fun and it almost looks like yours
I think hush is one of their more underrated bass lines
That's such a beautiful bass tone!
Hi what effect pedal you use ?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the riff from Rosetta Stoned doesn't actually go like that.
It's insane, that humbucker pluck even before eulogy. He will always be one of the best bassists.like rage tool and whooten from bela fleck
And when it comes to drummers as well. Like you can't say tool is not talented, and you did a good job
In my opinion, Prison Sex is the best bass heavy song Tool has, but it is not a Justin Chancellor song, despite them playing it almost every single show till...I think the last time they played it was 2001, and that upsets me lol. That's my favorite song. Not their best song, but my personal favorite.
All the songs you included are great, but Prison Sex's bassline just, ah man, there's just something about it.
Could you or someone walk me through the settings you use for the delay on Pneuma?
What effects are you running during the aenema riff?
Just curious, what are you using for strings on this bass?
I just finished a tool bass medely and all I'm struggling with is making it sound good from a cell phone. It's not quite loud enough and you can't pick up my bass too well while playing against the music. Any tips?
How you make the tones
The fact the "The Pot" isn't on this list, makes it Null and void!!
finally my bass and my fat fingers have a reason to hop back on my bass
thanks for not putting schism , awesome bass line but its everywhere
For Rosetta Stoned the second last note of bar 19 is Ab not C.
I was expecting Vicarious intro riff on top 5
Can’t believe schism wasn’t on the list
DUDE... WINGS FOR MARIE pt.2?!?!?!
No offence to Schism... but props for not using it as that would been a little too obvious👍
The Rosetta Stoned riff during the guitar solo part is off unfortunately
Yeah, I noticed that too
I thought it was going to be Schism next every single one
This list is rubbish without Schism!!!! 😝 jk man there’re sooo many great ones it’s hard to choose. Great video thanks!
Trying really hard not to go for Schism and The Pot haha
RIFF OFFED BY DREAM THEATER HOME!!!
The Pot!
You missed this one
Pretty sure sober is the most famous bass track from them. People who don't know tool heard that song.
Surprised schism wasn't part of the 5?
Anima?
That pNuma baseline sounds like Eminem 🙀
10.000 days pt. 2 . .
Missing a few notes I feel… tab books aren’t always right, especially in 46&2 and disposition
I ain't mainstream or nothing like that but where the fuck was the pot that's the most bad ass bass line the whole song
Flood gets no love?? Not even the comments section.. #TOOL
Ur Played pneuma very ...specialy
Justin does not use a pick right?
He does.
Aj Anaya Whoa. It sounds more like finger style to me. Coolio.
@@Meshuggapeth I believe he only uses finger style on Wings pt 1 and 2. And when they played it live he even sat down to play it.
SuperSJ Ah. When I saw tool live I was so far away there was no telling, also they did not play those songs u unfortunately but they played my favorite Third Eye at least
