As a bus driver in Manchester myself I'm sorry to see you have such a close call with that bus. I can assure you, you did absolutely nothing wrong in this situation. Visibility through the Busses windscreen is perfect and there is no reason they shouldn't of seen you. This part of Rochdale Road is just after the merge from 2 lanes to 1 so the driver should of been doing extra checks to make sure there surroundings was safe. Unfortunately I don't work for this bus company which was Stagecoach but I'm sure they'd like to see the footage you have. There is no need to second guess your actions, keep doing what you do as I enjoy your content :)

Guys, I suppose we are all drivers as well and sometimes you just don’t spot some things or he might not have a choice as a bus or a lorry was coming the other way as well and the road isn’t endless. Had same thing some years ago, ended in a ditch because of the scare but I did see the lory overtaking a car on a two way and the bus driver just didn’t have the choice it was me or the frontal collision with a lorry so he swerved. Did it bruise me and my ego - hell Yes, but do I blame the bus driver - NO. The main point is like Katy said, what can we ALL do better. In my case , Lorry driver could have been a better driver.

It could have been a lot worse.
But over last 6 months I am experiencing more near misses where vehicles are getting so close to me when passing it’s unbelievable. I have everything on me and the bike to be highly visible too! It does need a complete change of culture how to share space on the roads like the Dutch.

I live in NY state, not the city. I'm 52 years old, and have been an avidly consistent bicycle rider since the age of 9. The first roadie style bicycle that i bought was at 12.
I've been almost hit quite a few times over my many years of bicycle riding. It Really is obvious that things have gotten profoundly worse for cyclists in recent times though. I can personally attest to this. The driver's are obviously more distracted than ever, and more aggressive than ever as well. And Really, there Needs to be Many More safe riding options for cyclists, especially in these very trying financial times. There can never be too many bicycle riding paths(Alternative routes for cyclists). Heritage trails are around, but there are still way too few of them. So Many roads are So Bike Unfriendly, and Downright Deadly for cyclists actually. It baffles and disgusts me when I see a bicycle sign on these horrible roads that have No Edge on the corners of the road. It's just like they may as well say, Yeah, come on cyclists, ride on this horrible road, if you get struck, whatever. I guess the only way to deal with these types of road situations is to ride a fat tire all terrain bicycle, and stay and remain completely off every portion of that road. That's what I've done while riding my fat-bike to work. They Are extra tiring bikes to ride though. So Much heavier than roadie bikes. So much heavier even than a standard mountain bike.

Cyclists need to change their mindset, and I'm a cyclist. You did not get hit by a car, you got hit by a DRIVER. Probably on their cell phone. Traffic laws need to have much higher fines for cell phones, $1,000 first offense. $2,000 second offense. License suspended for six months third offense.

    • @yodab.at1746
      @yodab.at1746 Рік тому +4

@@Mike-vd2qt when a car/driver combination passes me very closely, I have the opportunity to see what they are doing. 99% are not using their phones. There's something known as a "punishment pass". Some drivers resent having to share roads with cyclists, we get in their way. It's (some) of their way to get back at the cyclist. The de-personization ie "car driver" "motorists" "cyclists" is subconsciously powerful. Different if you think "mum" "dad" someones "son or daughter".
My adrenaline is often so high after being scared by a fast close pass, that if I were to catch up and confront the driver, I might be later classed as a murderer.

I have been twice in a similar situation by motorcycle in early 2000s while studying in Thailand at the university. The first time a van squeezed me between the 15cm high curb and the van itself. The driver paid absolutely no attention what-so-ever I was on his left-hand side. Luckily only the car door got damage from my steering bar. I survived. The second time few years later also in Bangkok a truck driver decided to turn left from the middle lane behind me at a high speed. All I could do was slam the brakes. I got some bruises but my motorcycle did not survive that well under the rear tires of the truck. After seeing your video, I will now hit the road and go buy the Garmin rear radar with the camera for bicycles.

Katie, this is a great video. I’ve noticed more lately than ever, that traffic is getting very very close to me. It’s to the point now that I’m not sure what to do about it to stay safe.
I’m finding that when on the road, and there’s no cycle lane, I try to stay as close in to the kerb or verge as possible without it being dangerous for me, but I’m finding that cars then try and overtake me on the same side of the road, rather than wait for a space and go into the centre of the road or even into the opposite lane to pass safely. So I’ve now started to come just off Centre to make sure that cars have to wait for a space , no oncoming traffic, and have to take it wider.
I feel almost certain, that it’s just a matter of time before I get knocked off, and injured or worse.
    Thanks for raising the awareness

That was scary. Does anyone else find that this happens with depressing regularity when using painted bike lanes? It seems that drivers feel that their responsibility ends as long as they don't actually cross the line. I tend to ride outside of these lanes (unless they are wide enough to have a safe separation between me and the line) but this has the downside of seriously outraging motorists. I honestly can't decide which is the safer approach. We all need to be reporting as much of this as possible and all police forces need to take it as seriously as my local force (Devon and Cornwall) do. Driver education courses seem most appropriate for a first offence, then serious points or a ban for subsequent offences.

    • @johnb0101
      @johnb0101 Рік тому +10

Spot on. Once the lines demark the lanes, a lot of drivers think they only have to stay in theirs, irrespective of how close they may pass a cyclist. Painted lines do not overrule the 1.5m distance, but I fear this will not be adhered to.

If I was driving one hand using a GoPro and then drifting over to my right hand side of my lane and then said about other people driving. then I would get no sympathy at all.

I bought this from my LBS here in Nashua, NH yesterday, and just completed my first ride with it. This thing really is a game changer. It gives you situational awareness and plenty of time to react and manage traffic approaching from your most vulnerable blind spot on the bike.
I had a close call last Wednesday descending a big hill from Mont Vernon, NH to Milford. It was raining, 35 degrees and windy. I was about 25 mph. Didn’t hear a car till it was on me and I had to make a fast sketchy decision on a road with almost no shoulder. Shook me a bit. So I thought about getting this thing. Bought it that day. Rode it today. Same route, same descent. No rain :)
It gives you maybe 10 seconds notice that a car is coming and the color/lights go bright flashing red if the car is over a certain speed. This gives you time, in a situation like I described above, to react and take action. It even notifies you how many cars are queued up behind you, so you have great awareness. You can keep your eyes focused ahead of you, while knowing what is behind you and when it’s upon you. Then a quick peripheral check to make sure the car is keeping its distance is the only time you have to take your eyes off the front.
The thing I really like, come to find out, is that it tells you the coast is clear behind you, so you can ride the lane, not stay in the shoulder, with confidence.
I felt way less stressed and way safer with this thing. It is absolutely brilliant.
Hooked it up with a Wahoo Element 2. Connected directly with device in seconds.
Lastly, bought a couple of hard mounts for the seat post. One on each bike. It’s sturdier than the rubber band mounted thing that comes with it. After market about 10$ US per mount.

But my worst close calls have been a different situation - having an oncoming vehicle turn across my path, or a vehicle cross my path, while I was coming down a hill at speed. One of those was a bus that pulled out from a stop sign in front of me (I did not have a stop sign) when I was too close to stop. I avoided colliding by making a hard turn to draw up parallel with the bus, then gave the driver a few words after he stopped at the bus stop.

If anyone's going to report to the Police don't make the mistake I made by sending footage generically to the Police. They have 14 days to take action against drivers and by the time my footage had filtered through to the correct department the 14 days had elapsed. Instead, each Police force has a dedicated portal where video footage can be uploaded and action can be taken swiftly. Unfortunately this is the only way driver behaviour will hopefully change and the new changes to the highway code are adhered to.

Garmin Varia is the best bit of kit I purchased that I never knew I needed; having a early alert on single track roads can allow you to plan better when letting cars pass, alerts of electric cars where they are so quite and on windy (noisy) days knowing what is behind helps. One great thing is that when descending as I do a lot in the Pyrenees, when taking a line on the road, knowing if a fast local driver is catching you up gives you the confidence to either carry on or plan when to move to the side to allow them to pass.

I had a bad one with them in Chester and contacted the company - they could see the incident from the bus's own camera and (so they say) disciplined the driver. Really good video, totally share your sentiments - this is not about revenge or hate but about making the roads safer, driver by driver, bit by bit. I don't have the Garmin set up but achieve a similar effect with a bar end mirror and Chilli-Tech cameras mounted front and back.

I live in a country town in Aus, where we're lucky enough to have painted cycle lanes, however, they sit between angled parking bays and the road, so constantly there's people reversing out in front of you because they can't see you, or people treating the bike lane like a second driving lane.
I've also attended several fatalities and serious accidents involving motor vehicles and cyclists, so the varia was one of the first things I bought for my bike. The peace of mind of having that radar is fantastic.
Scary incident, Katie! Glad you're safe!

Yes agreed shocking pass. I come from the same camp as Chris Boardman though. Cyclists, Walkers, Horse riders etc continue to have more and more hiviz, lights etc decked out like Christmas trees but incidents like this continue to increase. It needs radical action on drivers with firmer applied penalties.

So horrible to see this. I won't ride without my Varia now, I still do shoulder checks when I need to but having that extra alert is so helpful. Especially as you say on windy days or on descents.
The camera version has had rather bad reviews for the quality of the camera though, especially in low light conditions.

I share your concerns Katie, coming home from work a few years ago a guy in a car overtook me so close that his nearside door mirror actually clipped my handlebar !! The cameras are all well and good but quite expensive for a lot of people, a low tech solution would be a small off side bar end mirror, not as good but will warn you and you can at least see the overtaker approaching and make certain your well over 🙄

    Hello Katie,
Thank you for sharing this incident, that had to be scary as there’s nowhere for you to go easily…
I’ve not owned a bike in years, but with the help of my younger brother who works in a bike shop in State College Pennsylvania (Freeze Thaw). I’m hoping to purchase one soon (Kona Dr Dew)…
My wife and I live in New Mexico, much different environment than yourself…
I’m slowly finding cycling channels that are informative for my level. BTW, your channel popped up on the suggestions this morning, I’ve watched a couple of episodes and decided to subscribe.

Katie, the latest update to the Highway Code specifically states that vehicles cyclists must leave at least 1.5m space when travelling at up to 30mph, more when travelling faster. Please report to the bus company, the next cyclist may not be so lucky. I purchased a Varia earlier this year, fantastic piece of kit.

Unbelievable! Absolutely no excuse by a professional driver. You were in a cycle lane and clearly visible. Hopefully that driver will be out on an awareness course asap as if that was a less experienced cyclist that could have had serious consequences.
The Garmin kit you mention is excellent, but pricey and outside many folks’ budget (mine included!) It would be great if Garmin could offer these products as a part subscription package. I’d definitely sign up if it was available. Glad your ok if not a bit shaken up by the crappy experience. All the best

Some really good feedback especially from the bus driver good of him, makes a change from drivers who would run a cyclist off road and think nothing of it. I have a Varia with light and radar since being bought one at Xmas and would recommend one to all. They are great for turning left in traffic because you know if traffic is near or the road is clear for safe movement. If i would have known about the unit with camera i would have got that one.

Thank you for sharing this video. Once I was pushed down the road by an overtaking bus on a very tight road turn. It was daylight and I always have my bright high vis jacket on. I also was way before the bus, of course, could not wait 2 seconds. If I had not jumped down to the pavement, he would have definitely hit me. I was just as shocked as you were. Once, also while I was signaling to take over a parking car on the road, a car hit my signaling hand, just to take me over, while we had cars coming in the other lane. I do not get why they can not wait that 2-5 seconds.

I love the warning it gives me especially like you said in the wind or particularly going down a hill and you don’t hear the car coming. I also like how if a car is going particularly fast it will be a red warning on the device your using and normal speeds more of a an amber colour.

Ok, I bought the Garmin Varia and went for a test ride with it today. My main comment is…it is fantastic !! Have to admit I was sceptical about getting one but I love it. Even on a short 30mile ride I came up with about 10 different ways in which is was useful. As far as I can tell the only downside is the cost, it is expensive, but I would say well worth it. I’ve yet to be disappointed with stuff I’ve bought that you recommend so thank you

Hi Katie I'm glad you're ok. As a cyclist who cycles over 3000 km per year on the roads of the most densely populated country in Europe, i.e. Malta, I'll be quite frank about it. Lights and bright coloured clothing are a must and they do help a lot as regards our safety, and I always use them. But no matter how much precautions we take, preaching and reporting etc. we do, there will always be those asshole low-life and selfish pea-brained reckless drivers on the roads. And another thing, if I had to use that vehicle detection device here on our roads, it won't stop beeping for more than 10 seconds max. with the amount of cars we have here, so it is virtually useless. My way of staying alive as a cyclist here is always ride defensively and forget about your right of way most of the times. And be a human 360 degree radar, be aware of your surroundings all of the time, using ears and eyes and predicting what other road users can possibly do before they actually do it. Many years of cycling on our super busy roads have taught me how to do this, but I am the first one to admit that the danger can never be cancelled out completely. And I did have some close calls too. Cheers and ride safe x x 🚴 🚦 ☮️

Another great feature of the varia lights is they start blinking more when it senses something coming up, so it makes you more visible. To save charging time I leave my lights on the bike and got long charge cables and just plug the lights in right on the bike, for the Garmin varia I twist it 90 degrees and the charge port is easy to get at.

I'm so impressed that you are reflecting on what you might do differently...as a cyclist and driver I'm met drivers with absolutely no regard for cyclists and on the other hand cyclists who believe they are entitled and that it is everyone else's job to avoid them. I would say that driver had no regard for you and should have been reported.
Also I don't think it is the wisest thing in the world to film in busy urban traffic... reality is if he'd be an inch further left I would not be viewing your video or sending you best wishes on your recovery!
We all share the road; we have a right to...and a responsibility?
That said this guy if he saw you is a menace and needs to be reprimanded...if he didn't see you he needs to be more careful and drive with diligence, care and respect for others.
    Glad you're safe
