    I am SO tired of all these fake social media personalities always showing the posh life as if everything is always perfect! Look at this one, sitting in a.... , nondescript room? in a tshirt? talking about pooping outside? Uh, hold on, is this actual useful information real people can use? She's a gem this Katie Kookabura!

    Can’t agree more on the saddle, I changed mine recently and the new one seems virtually identical in shape and feel to the old one, but the comfort difference is like night and day.

    Thanks for this. I don’t know why we feel so embarrassed about some of this stuff as the majority of us experience the same issues.

    • @canningsimon
      @canningsimon 3 роки тому +2

      Using the word "stupid" in this context is really unhelpful. If people are embarrassed about stuff there needs to be a supportive environment in which they can raise them, without feeling "stupid". It's nothing to do with "individualism" and more to do with being judged.

      @@canningsimon yeah, I agree. I just wish it wasn’t so. We all have the same bodily functions and it’s bizarre to me that we live in a society and moment in time where there there is so much shame and embarrassment about them.

    I always use a handkerchief to blow my nose, without a part ending up in my ear and the rest on my fingers 🤧. I will clearly have to practice more..

    Thank you for talking about the other 50% of the climb - getting back down. I love climbing, but especially steep gravel/mtb tracks scare the hell out of me sometimes. In some cases I push the bike down, but you are right, this is sometimes even worse than just going through it.

    Funny thing about the chafe/saddle/hair removal/numbness thing - I've never had so many conversations about my 'bits' in my whole life as I've had out on a long ride with the bunch. Seems like it's an academic discussion, talking about our own bodies in the third person.

    I use Shimano SPD pedals because I used to go spinning and those are the pedals they use, so if I rode my bike to the gym it made sense to use the same shoes. Plus they are a damn sight easier to walk in that "proper" road cleats. There is little or no evidence that they are any worse in any way, and certainly not at my level, so it's a bit of a no-brainer. The only downside is the reduced shoe selection, but honestly, there are so many on the market these days it's not really an issue

    - I do wear casual t-shirt and short, with an under-short.
    - Why don't you bury your paper with the rest !? You bring it back home, to throw it in the toilet so that it ends up down the near river ?

    Hi Katie supper informative video and very honest but were all human Ive never had any shame when it comes to ppl asking about toileting (I'm glad you mention about not leaving wipes/paper, most think you just bury them too and also to be mindful about being near water sources, I use a water filter 😱) I'm relatively new to the long distance cycling scene but used to do long distance hiking/backpacking so kinda the same.
    just to help anyone I don't shave anywhere, or wear lycra/padded shorts never used creme either doing 50-60 mile a day on bike touring trips, I only wear quick dry hiking pants/cargo shorts +cotton boxers I know everyones different but do think saddle choice is extremely important and mostly determines what you need to wear and not wear "depending on activity" im not into speed and my T-shirts can act like a sail dragging my speed to a crawl depending on wind direction 😂, but like you say its what your comfortable wearing, for anyone who's interested I use the brooks b17 its fantastic!, I was sceptical at first because its rock hard and slippy turns out these qualities are what make it perfect for long distance at first i did have pressure pain on my sit bones to start but no numbness and nothing lasting when off the bike and nothing that put me off getting back on the bike, for comparison my old saddle was grippy and slightly cushioned it would grip loose clothing and rub me raw the longer I rode, I think the cushioning just made it more painful I had a whole host of numbness and pain in my nether regions never gotten any better.

    Hi Katie, great video, re ladies and being comfy while riding. My wife was always coming back from a bike ride very sore, after a trip to the Boardman Performance Centre in 2018 for a bike fit, Bianca Broadbent suggested Cavilon cream as a posed to chamois cream (as my wife has very sensitive skin and was also reacting to chamois creams) along with a Specialized Power Expert saddle and Kalas bib shorts (both Zoom X and 3D endurance pads) she can now enjoy her bike again with no issues 👍

    • @helenandsteverivers1830
      @helenandsteverivers1830 3 роки тому +1

      Cavilon is brilliant stuff, nurse gave me a tube for bedsores after I broke my hip(not one of my better rides!) and was horizontal for 3 months . When I started riding again I tried using it and was very pleased with it's performance. You only need a small amount, it's clean/not messy. I guess a pressure sore is similar whether from a bed or a saddle.

    it's great that you made a video like this! However I do think there is a "price" for going fast downhills since descending is part of cycling too, not just climbing and riding on the flats. But I am obviously not trying to make less experienced riders, descenders to take huge risks.

  • @jamesgibson3242
    @jamesgibson3242 2 роки тому +1

    Okay another embarrassing question is, it seems as if you are used to and comfortable pooping while on a long ride and I am sure you try to find as much privacy as you can, but you never can always find a private place like behind a bush. So have you had to poop and did someone stumble upon you while you pooped? If so how did you handle it and what was the person's reaction?
    I think runner Paula Radcliffe was in competition and had to poop and just dropped shorts and pooped in in front of spectators. She didn't want to lose the race by finding a proper toilet.

      I live on the wrong side of the pond, and once got asked if I was wearing some kind of European shorts by another cyclist. I was very confused, but finally realized the back had ripped partially open and my butt was showing (yes, people here somehow thought that must be some kind of wild European style thing!)

    Im not afraid of descent per se. Im afraid that the nice road will end and transform into some unpaved road full of rocks or I will enocunter road full of cracks in the middle of descent. Happened to me few times while doing routes for the first time.
    Also I'm always riding my gravel bike in MTB shorts, I cant get used to lycra but this does not bother me at all. I feel comfortable and thats all what matter.

    ok, embarassing question - what gears do you have on your climbing bike? I live in a hilly area, and just bought a second hand bike with a 52/36 and 11/30 and I'm struggling a bit on the hills. I'm thinking of changing to a 11/34 at the back (as I have a long cage rear mech), will that be enough or should I change to a 50/34 at the front also? I'm 107kg at the moment and trying to get down a bit... ok a lot, but getting up the hills will be a start, otherwise the bike will stay in the shed

    Good tips thanks. Interesting answer on the ingrown hairs. I suffer from something called a pilonidal sinus which saw me in hospital in aldershot in the 90s needing an op. I was always told to keep it clean and dry and have always used veet and a hygiene routine mainly because the sweat builds up and uses the hair to get in cause infection which is incredibly painful. No idea about hairs elsewhere but certainly there I’d be inclined to get rid. Not disagreeing with what you said but found it interesting with the different advice.
