While Yard Act's music could use more variation and its commentary some sharpening, The Overload is a promising start for the group.

YARD ACT - THE OVERLOAD / 2022 / ZEN F.C. / POST-PUNK
7/10
Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
What's funny is my lecturer at Leeds University was like I have some friends that have released a debut album and that we should check it out. And now fantano reviewed it and gave it a 7 !!
Yorkshire crew represent. Just hearing Anthony saying Leeds was weird to me
@@whatsahellhell Right??? West Riders 4 lyf
I am loving this new era of British Post Punk.
Are you British yourself? I'm interested
@@coolcat3702 Yes.
Post post punk

You could say this album will be a yard act to follow
Booooooo I say, BOOOOOOOOO!
Ba dum tiss! Daaaad joke.
There should be jail for making that level of bad joke
Chase, you made me laugh, and that’s all that matters 😉
hardee har har
Tall Poppies will go down as one of the best songs of the year, awesome writing with a simple concept. We all know someone who had potential but society made them play it safe and live just an average life. Profound
100% endurance too, pure beauty
it is such a great, basic story that keeps you entertained the entire runtime
I couldn’t agree more. The instant change to narration of the protagonists funeral is just chilling. Gives me goosebumps.
@@serenitatis2191 100% endurance was the perfect fucking closer to what’s the best debut album since the arctics. Fucking beautiful writing.
"We all know someone who had potential but society made them play it safe and live just an average life"
Oh that's an interesting way of interpreting it and I can totally see it. To me the song is more about how that "average life" is often made out to be mundane and undesirable but in reality is a totally respectable way of existing. For the first half of the song (esp on your first listen) the singer comes across as if he's mocking the guy but after he dies he's ultimately like "everyone liked this guy and he was my friend".
"If I were him, I'd have never left the village either" - the singer kinda wishes he could be as ignorant as the guy and live a peaceful life because of it, but he "knows full well there are more handsome men and better football players in greater Manchester", so he can never have that kind of comfortable life.
That album cover is great because I could only see it either being an experimental electronic album or a punk related thing
I'm guessing it's closer to the second
Sometimes I play with my willy and the white stuff comes out
Post punk actually.
Looks like a twist on the AudioTechnica slipmat.

100% endurance is such a brilliant closer. Great narratives on this album! Same with tall poppies and Pour another.
It give me the strokes vibes, I also like rich a lot too
100% is low key the best track on this fantastic debut
especially love the tiny desk version
I gotta say, every now and then Fantano rolls in with a 7 that makes me want to check it out. This is one of those records and I gotta say, this thing is a strong 8 to me. Just great groovy post-punk vibes.
I would recommend folks to give their 'Dark Days' EP a listen first. Whilst I really enjoy 'The Overload', 'Dark Days' is simply 4X 10/10 tracks that will give you a better impression of the band than the album will.
Gutted that Dark Days and Peanuts didn't make it to the record
Only €1.99 on iTunes too, unbelievable bargain EP.
THE TRAPPER'S PEELTS! THE TRAPPER'S PEEELTS!!!
Yeah the whole ep is magic
I do think some of the classic English humour has been lost on Anthony. Not many albums make me laugh out loud, but Tall Poppies and Rich made me lolll
More people need to talk about Tall Poppies it’s great
Book yourself an appointment and get checked out

yesss yard act review! ill happily take this as a make up for not doing a Geese review
Hello
Projector was one of my favorite albums of last year
Nah geese still needs their review I’ve been waiting forever now
@@Francisco_Castro_Loves_Music too late for a standalone review or a yunoreview.
@@ZaneFowler Let's not kid ourselves, he probably would've given it a strong 5 to a light 6 at the best
It's amazing to see how much of an influence The Fall have been on many of the latest crop of indie bands. Yard Act, Squid and Black Country New Road all owe a huge debt to the late great Mark.E.Smith.
The "somewhat callous and irreverent commentary on poverty" on PayDay is actually a brilliantly angry satire about neglected communities. Some inspired and politically charged rants on this record!
Honestly none of the tracks on the album even come close to fixer upper for me - it's such an earworm it gets stuck in my head for days on end
im graem btw dunno if i mentioned
WAIT, CAL'S SINGLE???
*i have a chance* 😈😩
"I'll be the king in a matter of time,
Cal steals your queen and jacks your ride.
Makin' girl rappers get spayed at the vet,
Pair 'em all up and count the diamonds I get."
- Cal Chuchesta, 2018
Ive fallen in love with this band so quickly, so glad to see you reviewing it AND giving it a decent score
Lovin all this cal we're getting
Love them. Thank you for the review & the reminder. I'd listened to all their prior singles & ep & didn't realize they'd released a new album. Looking forward to hearing it.
I’m Graem by the way
its alright i fought more wars than i had hot dinners
Definitely my fav breakthrough of the year so far
100% Endurance is such a profound song. All around great first album for these guys. Can’t wait for more!
this album is what finally got me to venture outside of my insular music playlist. "Rich" is my favorite
I remember listening to the EP last year and thinking they were cool but I ended up not following along because I didn't realise that they were releasing an album with essentially the same cover. I'll definitely go give them another listen.
James makes the English language sound beautiful, just amazing writing
never saw i’d see the day big tony reviewed an album from leeds !!! yorkshire
I'm glad cal is back more frequently in these vids
Great album. Looking forward to seeing them live in April. Tall Poppies really hit me. Great lyrics.
The album cover feels like it really represents electronic albums haha. That's very nice.
When i saw the cover art on "Bandcamp", I thought it's an IDM record.
This was honestly a ten out of ten for me
me too
I'm a big yard act fan and I still liked the album as a whole but I'd give it maybe a 7
i love yard act but the dark days EP was better. this album is a light 8 for me
it is pretty impressive, an 8 out of 10 for me, or even a 9.
There's a lot more cal chuchesta's interventions now ...Nice
Imma be honest: I didn’t understand a goddamn word you just said, but imma still check out this album
so happy to see Cal all the time lol. Love it.
I saw them live at my local record shop and got a copy of the LP signed. They're a cool band.
This is absolutely my favorite album of the year so far.
Hi all, does anyone know which album is behind Anthony, on the top shelf? I’ve seen it in a couple reviews of his and have been meaning to check it out, the cover looks cool :)
That’s Betty Davis and it’s her self-titled debut! She’s a cult funk/R&B singer from the early 70s. She’s somewhat unknown but has been very influential to today’s R&B. She was also Miles Davis’s wife.
@@joshf.4270 thank you so much!! :D
Favorite breakthrough of the year
after watching the entire video i can confidently say that anthony is a handsome young fellow!
I Agree
Cal > Antknee
@aloevv𖤐 my father is in jail for running over 3 elderly people behind an ihop.
How can you not like Rich😭😭😭
0:16 Cal always shows up at the most random moments.
Looks like the cover design is a nod to Y Records, a British post-punk record label from the 70s. Which would put a big "Y" on their records.
Strong 7. I'd love to hear more from them.
Why didn't you review the new Corbin album? You seemed to absolutely love the previous one and I can't blame you. While the new album ghost with skin isn't as good as Mourn it still has a few standout tracks like yes or no/scab/mask it to the casket
Rich is my favorite song on the album lmao, but at least a positive review overall, early contender for one of my top albums of the year
It appears i have become rich
my sincere apologies to Yard Act but I was immediately sidetracked and distracted by the revelation that Cal Chuchesta is single and presumably available hmmmmmmmmm
cal needs a gf asap
i had some almonds
You ate them so fast

New Bonobo record, new AURORA album, amazing month
I love this album. I could also compare them to Uranium Club, Swell Maps and at more dancy times, Talking Heads.
Yard act lets go.
They really popped out of nowhere with a very solid album was little surprised by it considering I only heard yard act through fifa
I'd kill for a review of the new nekrogoblikon album or knocked loose. Love these vids
Planning a review of the new Bonobo?
How can I get a album review looked on your website but no prompts 🤔 email me please with your price ??
Pour Another and The Overload get a lot of play for me from this LP
what’s that album above igor
Fantao feeling a little generous today
Wondering if melon had to look up who Crewe Alexandra are
Fantano and Danhausen should do a collab
One of the better albums to drop so far this year. Still doesn’t touch most of the post punk that dropped last year tho, but I can still see it being on a few year end lists.
Can you rec some of last year’s post punk?
@@Luschan squid
I feel like we’ve been spoiled by the insane quantity of great post punk last year, the bar has been raised massively for post punk revival bands
@@Luschan Check out Mush
"Rich" is so much better live. I mean, the studio is also very good, but the live version fucking slaps.
Hey Anthony, I know you're probably sick of requests but I can't help but be irked by your lack of coverage on Soundgarden, especially Superunknown. In case you haven't checked them out (although I expect you already have), I would highly recommend going through their discography. I would highly recommend doing it in order though, since it shows you the bands - and to a greater degree, Chris Cornell's - extremely apparent artistic development.
Tl;dr I want you to review my favorite album of all time from my favorite band of all time and if you give them anything less than a 10/10 I will be devastated due to my emotional insecurity.
lol you probably won't see this but as a side note thanks for doing this review, I'm really interested and definitely going to check out this record
Could you review the album Hawaii Part II by Miracle Musical?
can you review the "old dog, new tricks" EP from glaive?
So glad I turned on those note-i-fies, now maybe Avatar please thank you?
I'm just waiting until Fantano reviews the new Corey Feldman single, it's so freaking epic. Dope album too!
100% Endurance it's my absolute fav music since i've listened. It has so much power and the storytelling it's thrilling af.... it came in the right moment for me. I think this album deserves a decent 8 at least
I’m surprised at how positive a lot of the reviews have been of this album, I thought the album was decent in parts but there were quite a few duds in there, especially Rich
This is such a polarising track. I absolutely adore it.
I'm surprised they get any rave reviews. They're nauseatingly dull, derivative and uninspired.
@@kcl4364 cool opinion!
@@jakecrawford3106 Thanks. Great that you like them but nah they suck.
@@kcl4364 😂 well they clearly don’t but you’re fully allowed to not dig it 👍🏻
PLEASE TALK ABOUT DENZEL CURRY’S “WALKIN” AND GIVE THOUGHTS ON UPCOMING ALBUM PLEASAAAAAASSSEEEEEEEEEE
I saw an ad on Instagram for these guys and I thought they were a local band, wtf
they’re even better live!!
Dang, kinda surprised to see this review. Figured it would’ve ended up in a YUNO review or gone under your radar entirely
never heard of yard act. have you ever heard to the álbum ‘Piorou’ (2020) by Tantão e os Fita?
Been listening to this album non stop since release! I don't agree with all of your criticisms but I think you are right that the group vocals weren't great.
Wait, Cal is single??? Finally I got a chance
Single and ready to mingle 🥰
back to back 10s woah
seeing these guys live tonight. Cant wait to scream 'light 7' all the way through their set and get kicked out
Please review Silvana Estrada “Marchita”.
Surely we've reached post post post post punk by now.
is this 6th wave post punk?
I really like this one, but I'm a sucker for spoken word centric bands. I think these guys have the potential to do some really wild shit in the future as they develop further.
Check out Robocobra Quartet!
same Henshaw released his debut album pls review
Sounds from something from Talking Heads!! Real nice
This album is probably the closest to an 8/10 for me so far in 2022. I love some of the songs, but there is definitely a wealth of potential that Yard Act can tap into for a 2nd album.
this is the best indie debut album in a very long time.
anthony gave it more than a 6 so i listen
IM STILL CONFUSED TO WHY U HAVENT REACTED TO NEW DENZEL
i feel like fantano reallu struggles with the post-punk character, particularly the british social style. but he’s trying his best
It's a Fixer Upper.
Nice review Anthony, but I’ve been locked in your basement for more than a year now
loved this album....
I don’t know anything about music but I still act like I know
so, what dya think of the follow up Melon?
Not melon but its a 9 in my book. Already near the top of my AOTY list.
alright anthony enough games time to listen and review to the new jon hopkins album
Hey Bathony G! Can you please review Bad Graffiti by Tim Ronan! Cheers mate!
Wait Cal is single??? Could I get his number pls melon man?
I really liked tall poppies and 100%
Great review.
Makes me think of a mix between The Arctic Monkeys, The Streets and The Clash, so great. Uk accents is music to my ears
