Great video and always love the Tesla banter between the two of you. Very easy to watch and follow.
I agree with Jenny that much of the problems you experienced were likely specific to your particular vehicle and also agree with you that the 2016 model is far more troubled than current ones. Having owned the 2016 MX for 2 years and then the 2018 MX for the last 2 years it is clear to us that everything from squeaks, leaks, sensor issues, road noise even the performance/longevity of the 90kwh packs vs the 100 kWh have all dramatically improved.
Our X still has its issues and part of me wonders how much more improvement the 2020 and beyond models have made.
We get lots of questions from potential X buyers asking about 2016 and 2017 models over ‘18 and above. We always try to guide them to the latter years as we do with 2012 or ‘13 Model S buyers. To me, those 4 years are on the do not buy list when it comes to used Tesla’s but again I know plenty who’ve had good experiences with those years as well.
Thanks for always being transparent with your Tesla experiences!

Ben, I feel your pain .. our previous 2017 model X also had so many issues and for the cost spending over $130+k and having so many issues really put us off, we recently traded it in for Audi eTron and my wife just love having normal rear door again, also not having rain and snow issues when opening the rear doors, the kids normally open the doors them self and even when the half open still water would get in not at bad but still, best fix was to clean off the top before opening the doors ..
I wish they had made the model Y interior identical to the model X .. but keeping the normal rear doors..

I had a 2020 Model X performance that I picked up on 12/28/2019 and sold it 6 months later with a little over 10k miles on it. I had zero issues during my short ownership and 10k miles of driving. I sold it because the outdated battery, slower charging, and other tech when compared to the Model 3/Y. I had no issues with my doors, but only had it for six months and 10k miles.

I have a 7 seater 2018 Model X and haven't had any issues with the FWD or auto doors. In fact the FWD makes hauling boxes very easy. My previous SUV a BMW X5 there was no way to put a box in the center of the car. I would have to remove all items out of the back of the car and reload as boxes could not get out of the back door. With the X, it's easy! It's also easy for my Mom to get in and out of the rear of the car, she's in her 90's. Love the FWD!!!!

I appreciate your video for all the real life problems and costs people go through of owning a Tesla. I am grateful for all the information and insight you provided. Watching this in April 2023. Would agree that, for those considering a 2016 Tesla model X, you do not want to buy any used Tesla with mfg date prior to 2017 due to issues in design and software upgrades! Is it that these problems are mostly in software design? 🤓🤓 Anyhoo, It's good to watch reviews two years later! Thanks!

It's nice to know these things because most youtube creators suggest (almost "advertise") to their audience to buy a used tesla. Yet, they forget to mention that most used teslas out there have problems, they are out of warranty and you have to pay a lot of money to fix them. Here in Norway, the moment your car needs to go for a service you pay easily 1000-2000$ just for labour costs and usually if the part you replace is worth 300-400$ you pay easily 2.5 grand.

I mostly enjoy our X but most of what was said in this video is right. In 6 months of ownership I've already had several major repairs under warranty. The heater went out a few weeks ago requiring a 2.5 hour trip with no heat in 35 degree weather to service. My 3rd row seat is currently stuck down and I've read there is a possibility I'll need an entire new 3rd row seat. Several squeaks and noises I've had repaired as well. I was able to get the 4 years 50K mile warranty before it was discontinued from Tesla (2017 P100D). I've paid nothing out of pocket so far, but there is a 0% chance I have this car outside the warranty. Current plan is to hang onto it until the Cyber Truck is released.

I agree that the Model X is a bit too flashy for me. We bought our 2020 Model X LR in December of 2019, so we’ve had it for about a year now. After a year of having the car, we decided it made more sense financially to sell ours and pick up a Model Y and maybe an ID4 or m3. Over the course of the year we’ve owned the X, we put about 20,000 miles on it with trips from San Diego to Las Vegas and Big Bear. The trip to big bear was a big eye opener for the power for regenerative braking. We topped off our mileage at the super charger in San Bernardino and by the time we got to the camp grounds in Big Bear we were down to 50% charge. On the way back down, we regenerated about 24% and got back to San Bernardino SC with 74% battery. We did have an air condition issues it’s ours as well. Our trip to big bear, the AC wasn’t working at all and blowing out warm air. It turned out the air conditioning sensor was not working properly and the refrigeration was undercharged. After a warranty fix, we didn’t have any other issues.

Tesla mobile tech told me that Tesla beefed up the hinges on the gull-doors. Also, they reworked the ultrasonic sensors and made sure that the fit and finish is not an issue. Basically, the gull-door issues have been solved to the point that they are a reason to get the refreshed Model X.

2020 Raven MX, small things but no big issue so far. Loving the car and made the frunk automatic too now that's something everyone would appreciate the automatic doors in Model X comparing to other models. Your wife bringing back groceries while you and kids in the car waiting in the parking lot, and you can just open the frunk by a click, and after she put in the groceries, click to close the frunk and open the passenger door with another click, and close it when she gets in, and then hands her a lysol wipe. Drive the car away without having the pull the key out/her touching the exterior/interior handles.

Great video! I have been a Model X owner for +3 years and can relate to your comments on flashiness. If you have to open the FWDs, you are always going to get attention. However, regarding the functionality of the FWDs, mine have been great and open fully always/consistently. The earlier models have issues with ultrasonics and newer models have an interior sensor to reduce head bonks. I have had a few things go wrong, but not nearly as much as you. I think some of that may be related to the car being a 2016 and a showcar which had body modifications. That said, Tesla has not been adding significant new tech to the Model X (battery tech, heat pump) so I will be trading the car in this year for a Model Y.

Good review for your MX. I get it and understand your moving on. I had to figure that the MX must have a + and - to owning one. I will share my MX is like less than the 1st 700 ever made. It needed a few things fixed or upgraded but it was all taken care of by Tesla. For me I have all the positive reasons to enjoy it and want to keep it forever. I think it will become a unique classic car for sure. When ordered every check box was selected so we did not feel it getting older by being passed by newer models. So many things that this car has can not be ordered anymore which helps bridge the gap between new and old. Just wanted to share that MX ownership differently depends on the car. So YES this car is perfect still and FULLY enjoy it as was meant too by Elons vision.

I always come here to up to date! Me and the wife we really looking into getting a Model X because we have 3 little ones. Mainly because the world is moving to EVs and our dad has been speaking about Telsa since the Model S was announce and he finally picked up his 2021 Model 3. The price point was the only thing making me really think about not getting one. Not to mention I was trying to wait and see the Model Y's Seven Seater (hoping for a 6 seater). But if this you didnt drop this video for another 3 months, we would of been Model X owners for sure! You guys hit the nail on the head, with the price not being comparable and when you said the Y over the X made my day because I've been telling my wife this for sometime now 😂 Thanks again for this video! Right on time! Now I'm doing research on this Rivian lol

Hello, I have had my 2016 P90D for two months with 100k miles and bought it used . The only issue I have with the car is range. I live in Michigan and bought it in November. I am getting 450 to 550 Wh/mile in the winter and on road trips close to 425 Wh/mile. Is this what you have experienced or do you think this is due to the cold weather? The highest supercharging rate i’ve got was 94kw and the max rated range I’m getting is 220 miles at 100% but actual driving range is close to 140 miles. Could it be an issue with the battery? Do I need to take it in for service?
    Thank you

Seating, yes, (time 14:48) but the Model X also, currently, still has good displays, although there’s evidence to suggest that Tesla is considering moving the S and X to the WTFH?! Model 3/Y single center screen dangling of a stiletto heel rather than integrated into the dash.

My wife felt the same way Jennie did, thats why we sold ours. My wife is very modest and as much as she liked the ride and driving it, she hated how flashy it was. It gets way too much attention for her. It's also why she drives a Y now. Not much difference in size and all the advantages of the new tech and not "as" flashy.

Yes! But I think we would probably like it less due to the yoke. Albeit some of the issues with the older model are likely resolved the doors are the same and now you don’t have a steering wheel

I just love Jenny. Her simplicity, humility and authenticity. She is very honest. I would take her recommendation everyday.. Thank you both for sharing this. I have a 2019 M3 and still holding on to my 2011 MDX. I was thinking of going all electric -all Tesla but your comments and review put a lot in perspective. Just the maintenance after warranty will be a nightmare. I will wait for a less sophisticated 600mile E-SUV to replace my MDX . Not sure which manufacturer will be first to market. Once again thank you both for unbiased review.

Thanks for very informative video. I used to own a 2017 MX but sold it, mainly because of those FWDs! I think if they do a refresh AND get rid of the FWDs, reduce the price, give it the horizonatl screen like MY, but keep the screen behind the steering wheel, they could sell a lot more of these. You probalby saw Kim Java's video on this, and she makes alot of sense to me.

But all part of the game when you want that to happen for the videos, clicks, and $ made from it. We'll see them about his early Rivian too. Just some major caveats vs normal owners.

I actually made money in my chevy volt. It was my personal car that I drive for work. I got the mileage and after 3 years sold it for what I paid for it. Crazy. My tesla. Well maybe not so much but I bought it used too and have saves so much on gas. And in Arizona registration is so cheap for evs. I got 5 years for $100!! I may not be making money but the overall cost is less than people think

I've owned a new 2020 model x long range for almost a year. we debated a Tesla for about 3 years before we bought and went with the X because of the seating capacity. I'm very much like Jennie. The doors & the price are a little embarrassing to me but I just wasn't ready for a sedan (3) and I don't like the billboard screen of the S and now Y. I like that the X dash still looks and functions much more similarly to any other car. What do I tell people? If you're not patient, it's not the car for you. It's quirky. Weird little issues. Not big tech stuff, just odd little things. Biggest issue I've had is with wind noise around the front windows. How Tesla can design the tech in that car, but not make a window that works I find so strange. In all, I've been happy and have found transitioning to an electric car super easy. I had pretty realistic expectations going in. I knew not to expect perfect. It's a tech car, not a fit and finish car which I think a lot of buyers expect when paying $100,000+ for a car. It"s in the price of high end BMW, Mercedes, not that far from an optioned out plug in Volvo XC90 (which we almost got) BUT I think a Tesla can't really be compared to those cars EVEN THOUGH they are in the same price range. It's a computer on wheels, it's just so different. If they put some regular doors on that car. Ah, LOVE ! Still, I like it more than any car I've ever owned and trust me, I'm not a car kind of girl.

I'd be sad if they discontinued the Model X. And perhaps if they did a refresh of the interior of the S and X, with a screen similar to the one on the CyberTruck, keeping the screen in front of the steering wheel, and did a minor refresh of the exterior, sales of the X and S would increase.

We have a late 2019 MX and mid 2019 M3. The kids love the Falcon wing doors and love riding in it. Personally I prefer to drive the M3 and I find the discrepancies in UI between them a pain when I go from one to the other.

That sucks. I worked for Audi and Vw for years and a car out of warranty can be very expensive. And I saw issues all the time of the VIN split didn’t cover known issues to affected vehicles. Better luck on the model S.

We traded in our '13 S and the MCU finally fully broke within a day of the trade! Even with a ~2k trade-in reduction it was time to avoid the further out of warranty costs. The doors are a great party trick until you don't want the attention, completely agree. The doors are too much. But buying a car that was essentially disassembled several times, even with no miles, is obviously responsible for the creaks and quirks.

So I was ready to buy a Model X when the refresh comes (or if it comes) but not going to lie, this video concerned me. Trying to balance the fact that you had a gen 1 2016 Model X vs how much better it probably has to be in a Model X that was built in 2021 now 5 years later. But 5 years of time won't change the fact that it still has falcon wing doors...

  • @CzyTV

I love the look of the doors, but just like she said, the technical aspect behind it, seem unreliable and compare to a regular car door or even a van door.. when there’s something wrong with it, it just can’t be fixed easily..

Thank you Ben and Jennie for making this video. I was about a week away from signing papers to buy a Model X. I test drove one long-range version and was lucky enough to borrow a friend's for a few days. My background in vehicle ownership is with Lexus, Audi, and Honda. The one area that I care about in a car is the quality of fit, finish, and longevity of any product I buy. Unfortunately, the research I have done on the Model X and first-hand experience has shied me away from that. I can not justify paying an $80,000 purchase price but getting the fit and finish of a $20,000 to $25,000 car. I appreciate everything Tesla is trying to accomplish but not until they figure out their quality control. I will wait.

  • @Chrisb8s

I appreciate your honestly and j can tell Ben still lives the S. I have an older S but also hate losing money. I bought mine used and it’s still is Great a p85 with ap1 and I put in the new MCU2. Because of the hatchback. I would only be interested in the Y but my trade in or out right sale would mean I would put out $20k more and lose a sunroof, free supercharging and free premium connectivity. So I will drive mine for a long time.
