    Just to clear up a couple of confusions, firstly, you *can* use the Portal outside your home network, of course, how well it works depends on both the quality of your internet connection at home and the quality of the internet you're connected to outside your home. Note that you do need to have UPnP enabled on your router to allow the portal to connect to your PS5 outside your home (alternatively, you can manually open the ports on your router for remote play). The second misconception is the idea that your internet speed matters when playing within your own local network. Remote play connects directly to your PS5, it never streams via another server out on the internet, if you're just playing inside your own house, your internet speed is completely irrelevant as all the traffic stays inside your local network. The only scenario where it connects to a server outside your home is during the initial setup and if it can't locate your PS5 on the local network, then it will get your IP address from PSN so it can connect to your PS5, but from there it's a direct connection.

    This thing is a glimpse of the future of handhelds. Playing PS5 level graphics in your hands anywhere in your house with a nice screen and probably the best controllers on any handheld ever. If streaming technology improves to the point where input lag ,loss connection and artifacts disappear then this will kill everything.

    Another few tips are to if you're using remote Play away from your home or where the PlayStation is to make sure that you have a direct connection with ethernet instead of Wi-Fi..
    Believe it or not disconnecting the HDMI when you're playing away from your home helps the quality, a UA-camr recommended it and for whatever reason it works It's something about the HDMI still doing processing..

    I love my system. I use 1 gig optimum fiber connection and if I checked correctly it’s showing my portal is using 300-399 of that 1 gig . So while I am playing I truly see no lag I play call of duty and the division 2 on it with no issue . I’m confident if I had to run it from my phone using 5G it would play just as well. I also like to make a note that even tho I pay for 1g fiber optics w optimum you truly only get about 18 percent less of that to work so on average I have 820 speeds to share between a couple devices .

    As others have said, this device isn't directly connecting to your PS5 in a 1 to 1 direct connection; it still goes through the internet. This was Digital Foundry's primary criticism of the device, they didn't understand why Sony didn't allow the device to directly communicate with the PS5.

    • @mmstick
      @mmstick 6 місяців тому +3

      Not true. It connects directly to your router and does not pass through the Internet at all. If your PS5 is connected to the same router via Ethernet then you are directly connected to the PS5 with a 1 ms latency if you configured your router to create a separate SSID for the 5 GHz access point.
      Digital Foundry also doesn't seem to know that the remote play feature has additional input delay if the PS5 is connected to a TV that's powered on. A lot of people have been reporting that unplugging the HDMI cable resolves all input delay. As the PS5 will be synchronizing output with the TV, or trying to render at 4K with HDR, which will make the remote play stream lag behind the TV.

    A couple of tips for Portal owners. If on WiFi change your channel to 5GHz should make the connection better. If you are playing a game and it has a performance mode turn it to that it will make the games play more smoothly and better on the Portal. Also if your connection worsens and the image becomes blurry and does not recover disconnect Portal from remote play and connect again the image should look sharp and clear when it connects again to PS5.

    • @mmstick
      @mmstick 6 місяців тому

      You would really rather play games only at a desktop instead of from bed or the sofa? Some genres of games are a better experience in handheld mode. I always bought indie games for the Switch because they're better in the handheld form factor, but now with this I've playing a lot of indie games on the Portal since they run and look better than the Switch versions. Though I also found it entertaining to play heavier high intensity games like Lords of the Fallen and Demon's Souls in handheld, and I've been going through Remnant II, Trepang2, and Ghost of Tsushima as well when I'd rather play from bed.
      These are using the PSVR2 sticks. Personally I've never had an issue with stick drift even on my original controller from the PS5 launch date. You can pry the back off and replace the sticks if necessary, but one should generally take better care of their handhelds and not use greasy fingers on them.

    • @bignickdangerpimp

      @@mmstick The continued narrative among some that stick drift is because of poor maintenance or greasy fingers and not Sony's poor quality control combined with cheap materials is why their next controller will have a 30 day life and cost $100.

    Thing is, gamers habits have changed. Back in the day we parked ourselves in front of our TV's to play games because we didn't have a choice. When portable consoles like the gameboy showed up it gave us a way to play away from the tv, but the quality of the game experience was second class. It shoulda been PS Vita but the smash success of the Nintendo Switch, which I think Nintendo expected would primarily be used in dock mode awakened gamers to this notion that I can get good quality AAA gaming experience without having to be stuck in front of my TV, and I think people nowadays don't really have the time to sit there in front of their TV for a good chunk of the day and they try to get their gaming where they can. Remote play and streaming has been around for about 20 years now, and the thing that crazy to me is sony has been trying since the PS3 to get people to buy into remote play, and this device which everybody called stupid when it was announced is actually the device that is finally getting the message across about the viability of remote streaming. Even the Wii U didn't have that kind of an impact with the gamepad being marketed about that kind of experience.
