- San Francisco, CA KSFO/SFO - A Minneapolis bound DC-10-40 idles to Runway 1R at SFO for a late PM departure on November 21st, 1999. As this jet patiently awaits it's turn to depart, a Northwest 747-200 idles to the 28 taxiway and a Cargolux 747-400F arriving on the 28s and catching some "air" on an updraft and note the wings rocking a bit as the 744F Captain holds it just right for landing. After the 747F clears, the Northwest DC-10-40 is cleared for take-off and rolls down Runway 1R and lifts into the clear air of San Francisco Bay. Filmed from the old Millbrae Ave Air-park at SFO. Camera: Sony Hi-8mm hand-held. Film by Tom Vance...all Rights reserved.

Delivered to Northwest on 12-12-73, retired 10-73.
Spent entire service time with Northwest!
Northwest was a launch customer for 747 400.
Great airline, even after merging with the Ducks.
Northwest had some of the nicest liverie with the red stripe on top. Always enjoyed seeing the DC-10 at the airport in Frankfurt, Germany where it was surrounded at Terminal 2 by much newer jets.
i thought thier early liveries even this one was dull in comparison to other airlines of thosetimes. Only their final scheme was elegant and modern
@@egschools1997The ‘Bowling Shoe’ is one of the greatest liveries of all time.
I personally miss the dc-10 and the tristar L-1011 both great comfortable fuel guzzling aircrafts
Oil dripping too!
Great times Great airlne sadlly missed.
Flew the L10-11 from Paris to Bombay to Hong Kong on TWA. GREAT BIRD!
The 40's had the Pratt JT-9D's instead of CF-6's...
So cool!!!!! Northwest DC-10 at a favorite location for spotting. 1999---so hard to believe. It really doesn't seem that long ago. Great stuff, Tom!
Thank you Android! I appreciate the comps. I have many more to post from that ear - check back often!
good ol 90s at sfo when you would get 2 dc10s departing from the 1's, the united, northwest and delta heavies used this runway regularly
Holy crap I was standing right where this footage was taken two weeks ago watching all of the 1R departures. Wish I could time travel
At Nagoya RJNA the -40 of NW was rare.
NW89 was -30 N211NW-232NW almost days .
But JAL‘s -40 was coming every days.
Miss seeing these gorgeous birds!! Excellent footage!
seanwdc10 Thanks Sean! TV
Nice to see the old planes! Liked and subscribed!
Northwest 411 Heavy contact bay departure...
I miss NWA in Memphis. It is a shame what happened to the Memphis Airport.
Agreed John,,,,,,,airlines are not nice sometimes,,,,,ex Reno Air that we saw at SJC quite a bit....great airline....now under AA wings.
Trivia. Anybody know why the DC-10-30 and -40 has the ability to lock the center gear in the UP position?
ANS: LaGuardia
The DC-10-10 is a short range model with no center gear. If a US domestic carrier wanted to take a DC-10-30 or -40 into LaGuardia they kept the center gear retracted because of footprint weight restrictions on the crowned runway with pilings. Source: Head of DC-10 design; Stanford instructor 1972.
Thanks..I only saw one DC 10 at PHX with the center gear tucked in late 1990s
Scrapped in October 2003.
that figures.......so cool to watch DC-10s all models when I was out filming....
Finally, a full-power takeoff!
The new international terminal, Airtrain stations and BART stations were under construction.
DC10の王様ってかんじ
Any chance you have footage of the NCA 747
This is a lucky *Triple-Same* video as I got 2 Different Wide-Body Monsters of 1) The same Airlines:- Northwest and 2) They have the same engines:- PW JT9D and 3) The thrust rating is same:- 50,000 lbf
in Amsterdam they fly there from America everyday
Yes. They Founded the First ,, Alliance,, in Flight History with KLM. Thats why Nortwest is so present at Schiphol at this Time.
the 40 was the 10 with the center gear like the MD11 right?
Chase Messer , the 40 is the 30 with Pratt & Whitney engines instead of General Electric.
Yes. PW JT 9 instead CF 6. Northwest and Japan Airlines used B747 with this PW Engines. For reducing Maintance Cost and Parts, they ordered the DC 10 only with this Engines. Mc Donnell Douglas build this -40 Version only and exclusiv for this both Airlines.
That is correct.
Japan Airlines often kept center boggie retracted when not needed to save wear. They also ordered-40 series DC 10s like NW did.
what was a 10-40 variant of this fleet type?
NWA ordered the DC-10 and Douglas was going to number it a -20 with Pratt engines. UAL ordered the -30 with GE engines. CEO Nyrop demanded that NWA get a number that looked newer than United's so the -20 became the -40. The -40 #2 engine cowl has a front bulge compared to the -10 and -30 because of the bigger Pratt fan. NWA later also had a lot of -30's. They were used and mostly late deliveries and in great shape. I flew FO and Captain on them for years.
Thank you.....great info
@@gregoryarnold1234major diferences between ge and pw on dc10?
And Japan Airlines was the other airline to order the series 40 just like Northwest territories they ordered the 40 because they had the same PRATTS on their 747 s and it would be easier to keep the same engine parts in their warehouse
