This is the first time I am really sold on getting an OLED Deck. I have the origin SD and I am very happy with it, but seeing that improved battery, I might pick one up when finances permit.
I would say its worth just because the lcd from the steam deck absolutely sucks, even cheap monitors are much much better, im not even talking about oled stuff but really the color acurracy, even among other ips devices its very bad. I dont regret getting my lcd when i did, but i gotta admit it kinda sucks color wise
I got exactly what I came from. I liked how you performed these tests. They were very informative. As an extra info it would be interesting to know at what settings each game is running, FPS and game screen size, as I noticed not all games take advantage of the full resolution, depending on the device. All of these things can impact the final result. It's interesting also how Valve and AMD are changing the way game graphics are displayed, without the need of power hungry machines. Cyberpunk was a very power intensive game, and now it feels a lot more smooth even on portable devices. That's actually incredible.
I really liked this video, so much in fact that I "liked" it. I also respect that you so carefully highlight things so rare, like Lain and Deathsmiles.
Great video, loved it. Pro tip when it comes to AAA games, just use moonlight if you have a PC with a wired connection. Then can enjoy +10h battery life with way higher settings
this is true video game journalism, unlike some bullshit companys like IGN who rated steam deck 7/10 and playstation portal 8/10 for some reason... i wonder what is the rea$on
@@fabolousjada5070 you dont need an PS Portal to receive an video streaming from the PS5, you can use your phone or an steamdeck , and if you use the deck to receive an video streaming only, then the battery will last much longer than 1 hour and 40 minutes, probably will last more than the portal. the difference is that you can play on the deck itself without needing to purchase/have another device. in other words, the deck can do everything the portal can with the same battery life or better, but it can do much more, like playing games offline, in places where you have an bad connection or simply is too far away from your ps5 to get an good connection.
If you use 30 to 40 FPS on a 10 TDP, screen brightness to 80% on AAA games. You are able to play on the OLED 3 to 4 hours. It’s a great hardware and I’m glad I snatched the Limited Edition, like you. Good test as always. Cheers!
Ever since my steam deck was updated to 3.5 with the launch of OLED, I can no longer play Battlefield 2 in desktop mode. Its a shame because it played it better on max settings than My more powerful PC. Please do a Revised video for getting older windows games to run on the newer steamOS. Love the content!
For Dark Souls III, I think if you repeated the test but locked both of them to 30fps and set the TDP limit off, so all devices are offering the exact same level of gameplay performance, I bet you anything, Steam Deck would win hands down.
This was a very informative and fun test, thank you. I do want to add my theory though as to why steam deck dominates indie/ non AAA games. It seems that it has something to do with the proton compatibility layer for Linux, as all of the titles that steam deck won by a landslide (aside from DeathSmiles) was native as opposed to Dark Souls and Cyperpunk. This suggests a big win for Steam Deck's future and Linux gaming overall, as when AAA titles slowly creep into Native Linux support, I suspect we'll see quite the massive performance/ batterylife gains. But that's just a theory, a Steam Deck theory!
Something I think should be noted is that the age of your device will affect the battery life. It's been just over 2 years since the LCD Deck originally launched and as a general standard, battery powered devices tend to target a battery health of roughly 80% after 2 years of use. Of course, this is dependent on how you use your devices and your charging habits so it's not always applicable but it's a reliable average. While I would never recommend someone buy an LCD Deck over an OLED, perhaps in a case of someone being strapped for cash and still wanting a Deck, they could go for the 256GB LCD model. In this case, they might get up to 20% better battery life than what was shown here, assuming your LCD Deck is from the launch period (if not, change that number to 15% or 10% depending on how old your LCD Deck is). While this doesn't really change much in the grand scheme of things, it at least means that the few people who will still be buying a brand new LCD Deck today should at least get moderately longer play time than the one in this video. Either way, this was a rather comprehensive test and I like your methodology. Good video!
Oshi No Ko is absolutely the best thing that came out this year. But really, it's been a very good year for gaming and anime in general. I liked pretty much ALL of the anime series that came out in the spring. and there were some interesting choices that popped up afterwards. There were a lot of cool games too
I made the mistake buying a Rog Ally, new... Here I am putting it on Ebay tonight because the battery is so awful and Asus slapped me in the face with the reveal of the new Ally with double the life. I will move to the deck if I ever go back to handhelds.
@@YouGotTheL I found someone who wanted to trade his OLED SD for an ROG Ally and I did it, mostly for the battery life and OLED screen. Not upset with the trade so far.
Steam deck oled is no brainer choice for those who didn't really care about graphics and performance, the battery life is really insane. And this device mixed with fsr3? It's will be perfect. I hope i can bought it with decent price because in my country, SD oled not officially release in my country so the prices is kinda high, it's around 700 USD for 512GB variant
Very nice, but I can't take the results of the Steam Deck LCD seriously. I'm going to bet that its battery is the oldest and most used here amongst all the devices which means that its life per cycle is likely significantly affected. How old is it?
Thanks for your testing, sad that you're out of pocket over all these devices but maybe at some point you can sell or return if still in time. Best wishes.
The OLED and regular steam deck in my experience takes about the same amount of time to reach full battery. The OLED does charge faster slightly but it also has a higher capacity battery.
I have a switch OLED and Witcher 3. The battery lasts around the 4 hours mark with a 10 minute +/- discrepancy. This is while actually playing it though. I reckon it would last longer if I just leave it untouched like how the test was performed in this video. ARM is a king when it comes to battery saving. No x86 processor could top that.

For those of you who have dealth with OLED monitors know what I'm talking about , the oled burnin fright of static images staying too long on your screen.
Seems to be a nitpick this, you need to watch the video "What happens if you leave an OLED Nintendo Switch on for 2 years straight?", his switch was perfectly fine.

Do it.. I did. It blows the lcd model out of the water. Plus, if you play less intense indies like I do, it has a 90hz refresh.
1000% do not buy an aya neo kun just to test the battery life. You'll never financially recover from it. Tell bill to do it. LOL
