In this video, I walk through the process of replacing a wheel bearing hub assembly on a 2011 Chevy Equinox. Although the wheel bearing itself was not bad, the magnetic backing ring was broken and causing the system to throw a StabiliTrack error. The ABS light was also on because the vehicle's ABS system was receiving erratic data from the wheel speed sensor. GM does have a service bulletin that outlines a process of cleaning the magnetic backing ring. you can find details on that service bulletin here: wp.me/p2znfB-Bl
The wheel bearing on this Chevy Equinox was particularly stubborn and did not want to separate from the steering knuckle. I used a grade 8 bolt, a couple of washers, and a nut to push the hub assembly out of the steering knuckle. In order to prevent the bolt from digging into the steering knuckle, I used a piece of flat steel as a surface for the bolt to push against.

BACK in the 70s and 80s...we never had to change wheel bearings. Today its almost as frequent as getting a oil change. But after watching this, gonna send my wifes Equinox to the shop. lm gonna stay home and have a beer.

Mark, Thank you for the push bolt idea for removing this bearing hub. I have changed many, but never this stubborn. I was running out of talent until I found your video. Thanks again!

Mark thanks for your video. Your call out on wrench/socket sizes and torque values is very helpful. I just finished replacing the right front wheel hub on a 2013 Equinox AWD. I made sure to liberally spray the axle shaft and it readily separated from the wheel hub when tapped. Be sure to spray penetrant on the open threads where the hub is connected to the knuckle and around the outside of the hub where it sits next to the brake backing plate. Also spray penetrant on the inside of the knuckle where the hub rests. When new from the factory the hub fits easily in place and is connected to the knuckle by the three bolts. Corrosion builds up over time so that parts of the hub become attached to the knuckle, making it difficult to remove. Instead of banging on the hub, which seemingly laughed at me, saying I’m not coming apart, I used a pneumatic air gun fitted with a flat chisel and moved it around the edge of the hub where it met the brake backing plate. Within a few minutes the hub broke loose from the knuckle. This caused little damage to the backing plate so it could be reused. I cleaned the corrosion from the inside of the knuckle using a cordless drill with a 1/4 inch stem 3-inch crimped wire wheel and 400 grit sandpaper. I coated the hub and bearing with an anti-seize compound to facilitate future removal should the replacement hub wear out or when the front axles need to be replaced. Time to repair was 1 hour 30 minutes (including jacking up and lowering the wheel) and replacing the hub allowed the abs and traction control lights to turn off after driving forward approximately 500 feet. I will be replacing the left front hub next. Mark’s directions allowed me to get this job done in a small amount of time.

I just saw this. I did mine last week. My car is from New England and rust rust rust. I pounded on it with a regular hammer and a 5lb rubber sledge for hours. Wouldn't budge. I finally had to call a mobile mechanic who had a larger steel sledge and a rod and wacked it a few times and it finally fell out. I bought a tool off Amazon for the next time I have to do the job. What a pain in the ass though. Yes, I ruined the backing plate as well. Had to order 2 from Rock Auto. At some point I'll put it on.

I was putting a new rotor anyways and I flipped my old rotor over and tightened with the lug nuts and put a large pipe wrench on the side and beat it with a sledge hammer where it came off in 5 minutes. Just a trick I learned from watching another UA-cam video.

Mine also had a check engine code for the EGR valve. I replaced the EGR valve and the stabiltrack message also went away. I am glad I didn't have to change the wheel hub.

Yeah that's a common issue, I replaced mine 3 times, the 3rd time I used the ACDELCO instead of a different brand and it finally stopped. Not sure the the technical reasoning.

I took off both front rotors soaked them in wd40 for a hour. Took the 3 bolts out. The hub assembly came out pretty easy. Keep in mind I I’m from western Ny. Salt and rust. I’ve had my share of fighting hubs. That’s why this time I soaked them and let them sit. Maybe I got lucky
But I was happy. Hope This helps

My manager spent hours trying to diag the 2011 at our shop before deciding to throw a sensor at it. While removing the sensor, I noticed that the magnetic ring on the back as shown at 6:35 is cracked and separated from the bearing. It seems to be just glued on. Now we have to replace the whole bearing over something so stupid. They should've just used the old-style tooth wheels. So far we've snapped my breaker bar just trying to remove the rotten lug nuts because my SnapOn gun won't even budge two of them, so I'm sure it's only going to get worse.

Just picked up a Rust free 2013 Equinox from Vegas. Drove it back to MN.
I looked for the Service Bulletin. Did I miss it in the comments some place?
I have the Stability control system error. My left front wheel sensor would read correctly until it got warm, and then go to zero.
The tip of the sensor is split. If I put it back into the hole with the hub spinning, it actually jumps up, I can push it back down. It's like there's a cam inside. Sensor ring coming apart? Time for a new hub?

Did you fix yours? Mine seems to have suddenly appeared, a whining sound linked to vehicle speed that's reminiscent of an electric motor. Shifting to neutral does not change the sound. Braking at highway speed increases the sound as all the weight shifts forward.

I'll admit that I've watched this twice since it went up because I forgot about using a push off bolt.
First for the OEM passenger side bearing and now for the driver's side.
OEM bearings were still solid on both, but that magnetic ring seems to take a sh!t kicking.

I'm thinking its just my tiers that are noisey. Just got them re-balanced and rotated. The sound from the tires happened below 50mph before, and now about 40 +mph and over it starts to get loud. No shaking of the wheel, drives straight, no lights on, no grinding noise... im kinda stumped

Remove hub bolts , take a big punch / atleast a 3 lb hammer and hit the hub housing in the front to "spin " the housing let to right . not in or out just yet . placing the punch on the outside of housing at the point where the bolts come from the back side . Once you get it to break free rotating the housing it should be no problem to then tap it out twards you .
